- This video documents the restoration of a plaster-on-wood statue of St. Joseph and Jesus. The statue maker and the year are unknown. But it was brought to us in bad shape - the neck almost completely severed, some major structural cracks inside and out, and heavily peeling and bubbled layers of paint. The plaster had broken off from the wooden interior structure and had to be repaired before the restoration could begin in earnest. Hello Sister! This project took about two weeks but we usually work on more than one project at a time. While the plaster or epoxy is curing we work on something else. Bóg zapłać 🤗
I am the end of a restoration of St. Joseph and Jesus plaster statue, 24" tall. I painted it using professional acrylic paint. What do you recommend I use for acrylic varnish to seal the colors? How long should I wait to seal it after the painting is finished? It will be displayed indoors only. Thank you.
Hello Norma! Congratulations on completing your project! In most cases, for an indoor statue, a good quality acrylic is all you need - especially if you applied paint over paint or used a primer layer. If you really feel you need a varnish layer, you might consider a flat (or low-sheen) varnish by Liquitex. If the statue is not likely to be handled or frequently touched, you don't need to apply varnish. The professional acrylic will suffice. Thank you for your response and for your guidance. I am almost finished and will be happy to post the before and after pictures soon. I am an oil painter normally and need to varnish my paintings once they are dry because the colors can sink in and become dull. Varnishing brings it back to the rich original colors and values. It doesn't seem to apply to acrylic colors. I did prime the statue and used professional quality acrylics.
Beautiful ! My mom got the statue of Saint Philomena along time ago, The statue broke but we glued it back but there’s chunks and paint chips still there, how much do you think it would be cost to repair it?

Hello Fr. George. For Jesus’ garment on this statue we used Behr premium latex with primer. The colour is called “sand motif,” and the lighter accent on the fronts of the folds are “Navaho white.” We hope this helps. God Bless.

@@GeoA-f5v Most larger paint stores will be able to match the colour if you tell them "Behr sand motif," and "Behr Navaho White," even if they don't sell Behr paints. Good luck, Father. God Bless!

Hi Desmond. We had a look at your work and you're vey talented! For indoor statuary we usually use premium acrylics, and for outdoors we use Zinsser123 primer and Behr Marquee or Dynasty (premium) outdoor paints. Hope this helps, and thank you for your kind words! beannachtaí ! :)

Thanks for your compliment and your opinion. Our artist preserved St. Joseph's face as close as possible to the original, but keeping the higher gloss finish would have been a mismatch for all the rebuilt, re-sculpted and repaired areas. You'll note that his hands, his face and his feet were three very different colours when he came to us. Also, keep in mind that pretty much every inch of this statue was crumbling and had to be rebuilt. We consult with the statue owners whenever possible as well. But we appreciate your feedback! Did u put any sealer after painting?
Hello Bucklag. With a few exceptions (such as statues that will be touched often by people) we normally do not apply a sealant on indoor statuary. The paint we use is a premium paint by Behr and holds up very well. We hope this answers your question. Take care.

Hello Olivia! For indoor statues (like this one) we usually use a premium Behr paint (such as Dynasty). If a primer is needed, we apply Zinnser 123. But Pauline very often custom blends paints to achieve specific colours that she wants to use -- and in that case, she might also add Liquitex acrylics. We hope this helps. Good Luck!

We use Zinsser primer and Behr premium latex paints for outdoor statues. For indoor statues we use Behr and a blend of custom-mixed acrylic paints. Usually Liquitex. Hope this helps!
As for skin tones, they are fairly complex based on the statue and its positioning and expected lighting. In the near future, we hope to produce a short series of “how to “videos. In one of those I will ask Pauline to speak specifically to skin tones and how to blend them.

Not sure what type of paint you are using. Is it oils or acrylic?
When necessary, we apply a latex primer such asZinsser123. For exterior statues, we normally use exterior latex paints, and for interior project we use interior latex or acrylics, which Pauline custom blends to make the colours precisely to her liking.

@@BrushworksStatueRestoration I wondered if you applied traditional gesso with rabbit skin glue, but I now see that would not be necessary. When you apply the latex primer, do you sand it with 400 grit paper or only after final coat of color? Also, do you apply any final sealant for a sheen or glaze look?
Hello Kate. We use the 400 grit sandpaper before the primer and paint layers. The primer we use has no sheen so paint adheres to it very well.
Also for indoor statues, the question of sheen on the finished statue is a matter of taste. We tend toward matte finish because we feel it looks better- especially on skin tones. But again, it’s not wrong to apply a lacquer; it’s just a matter of preference.

What type of paint do you use? I have a statue i want to repair, its got lots of cracks in the paint. Should i sand it? Prime it? And then just go over with a acrylic paint?
Hi Clementine. If there are a lot of cracks in the paint, it makes sense to gently sand it with a 400 or higher grit sandpaper. If you can get it smooth, you do not need to prime it and then you can indeed use acrylic paint. Be sure to buy a professional quality paint and not a student level or learner paint. Good luck!
