Thanks so much for reviewing this set, and particularly for including the CD version. I am CD only since emigrating from UK to Australia and the vinyl would have been expensive to ship. I had a vinyl comp years ago of King Cole Trio radio recordings from the 40s and it was great. It even included some of the radio announcers introductions and links, which i enjoyed for the feeling of actually hearing it on the radio, so I am hopeful that some of these recordings will be the same. Resonance does a great job in giving life to recordings that would otherwise be lost to ordinary listeners, and honouring the artists and their estate, and if some of them are not audiophile quality then I don't care, its about the music
@@michaeldavis-kk6qx the CD set is quite impressive too, and yes I agree I love putting myself in the setting of when this music was originally aired. It’s one reason why I was very impressed with the New Land box set of Mingus’ recordings as well
Very cool, I ordered the Nat King Cole set on CD for $40 and the Bill Evans CD bundle (8 albums for $100), thanks for sharing -- I definitely would never have known about this otherwise!
Thanks so much for getting the word out about this great set. What an amazing opportunity to pick up a great piece of music history at an absolute bargain price!
Thanks for the notice. Just ordered it. I was gifted the CD version when it came out, but the LPs had not been on my radar for whatever reason. Like you, I love both the more jazz oriented work as well as the vocal arrangements that really exude the feel of the 30s and 40s. Nostalgia for a time I did not actually experience...
Bought it immediately as I was watching your video. Thank you so much!!! I have wanted this for awhile and very much appreciate the low cost opportunity.
I got the CD version of "Hittin' the Ramp" when it came out and was disappointed in it because all too many of the King Cole Trio's recordings from this period were group vocals by all three trio members, when what I wanted to hear was either jazz instrumentals or vocals by Cole alone. I'm grateful to the folks at Resonance for putting out this material in the best sound quality possible, but there's a lot of dross among the gold. Incidentally Oscar Moore's brother, guitarist Johnny Moore, was so jealous of the amount of money Oscar was making with the King Cole Trio he decided to form a piano-guitar-bass trio of his own, the Three Blazers. The problem was he needed a Black musician who could play piano and sing, and after briefly trying out Frankie Laine (who qualified in only one of those departments) he finally hired the great Charles Brown.
WOW! That is fascinating! Funny, I was pretty much introduce to Nat King Cole exactly as you described with the Time-Life albums that I actually bought! In addition to being a fan of his daughter Natalie Cole. Around 1991 I bought the 5 set LaserLight Digital collection of his trio recordings.
The LaserLight collection was drawn from many of the same transcription recordings as the Resonance boxed set. But the Resonance transfers are consistently better in sound quality.
This set also includes the trio’s great Decca r&b flavored singles that were influenced by Louis Jordan such as Hit That Jive Jack and Call The Police. These are considered some of the early precursors of rock n roll.
You really should have mentioned Will Friedwald's authoritative notes. One of America's leading historians of pop and jazz music, Will wrote 'Straighten Up and Fly Right,' the definitive biography and critical analysis of Nat King Cole (Oxford University Press, 2020).
I’m in the UK and I’d love this box. But. They want $93 for shipping to Europe. I guess it’s a heavy item but that’s a bit too expensive even for 10 records. They need to get themselves a European distributor!
Resonance records is kinda hit and miss with sound quality in my experience from my mostly record store day purchases. Their prices seem to be going up as well.

Great video, been enjoying your channel for awhile (subscribed). Appreciate this and the coupon! Grabbed the LP box set 😎
Been a big Nat Cole fan - thx for the heads up - ordered.

@@mariomarques9951 you’re welcome!
Got this for Xmas and was surprised how good it is!

This is a awesome boxset, great video Chris
I have this set - it is great - thanks for highlighting it!
IMO Resonance puts out great sets with great sound and packaging and booklets

@@bosshogster6715 agreed, is it the same issue with acoustic sounds’ website? It looked like they were getting some copies that were similarly priced
Great review, very useful.

Yeah, I have stopped buying their vinyl and just get their CDs which actually sound better.
Tried to buy it 93 for shipping to the U.K. 😹
