Great video! Looks like the Max Lens Mod 2.0 might make me actually use Superview for the first time. The distortion wasn't too bad! Question though - I saw that the 1.0 version disabled 4k, but then later you selected 2.0 and you can do 4k. Is the option to select 2.0 greyed out when you have the 1.0 mod on? Does it work just look weird? What happens if you have 1.0 on but select 2.0 in camera?
Well, if you film in the Max Lens Mod original in the Max Lens Mod 2.0 option you'll have strong vignetting, so you'll probably need to crop down to 2.7k anyway. I even like Hyperview on the Max Lens Mod 2.0, it looks wild!
Thank You! Well, I have a new drone sitting right next to me, it's possible I might make some videos on it and my thoughts on it, as well as how to fly it to get the most out of it. It's in my plans, but funnily enough GoPro videos do really well on my channel, they always have done, and I enjoy using them, so I'll carry on making GoPro videos. Drone videos, I'll no doubt dive deep into them this winter with this new drone as there really aren't many people out there creating good solid content on drones in a "cinematic" way, and that's what I like doing, so it's all planned, just need to press REC.
Do you know that GP-Log is more or less fake and gives you the illusion of more dynamic range? It underexposes by 2 stops, thats why you see noise even in the midtones. If you want to shoot in the highest quality (even with hero 11 and in all res/fps combos) follow my guide: Select Standard profile... ISO max 400, EV -0,5, Colors Flat, sharpness low, WB manual. Then enable the following: LOGB = 250 WIDE = 1 NR01 = 98 BITR = 199 When capturing the native gamut of the IMX677L you need to push the colors manually, i could not find any transformation from it to 709 or 2020. For the gamma you only really need to tweak the shadows to fit your taste/look. After that go ahead and grade it! EV -0,5 is preference but more or less perfect for gopros. You can thank me later ;) Have a good one! I enjoy your videos!
Why were the colors so different with the Max Lens Mod 1/2 on? If you look at the very beginning of the video with the three different Wide views the Wide view without the MLM looked so much better
Well, if you look closely you can see it’s very muted, probably due to the lack of resolution the lens can produce. It seems flatter and almost like I have a soft filter on my face.
The issue is a mathematical one. The view of the world is spherical, but we are projecting that to a 2D, flat image sensor and are viewing on a flat screen. When pushed to very wide fields of view, this projection creates stretching in the corners. This is exactly the same problem of projecting a globe of the Earth (yes, it is a globe!) on to a 2D map. You may be familiar with the way normal map projections enlarge countries the further away they are from the equator. If you want straight lines in the world to remain straight in the video, you need to use a rectilinear projection, that cannot be used for these ultrawide fields of view. So you have a choice of retaining straight lines, or having an ultrawide FOV.
I'd personally leave it how it is, much like with anamorphic lenses, it's got its own character that people are used to from GoPro cameras, it's not necessarily a bad thing.
Would you recommend this product for someone who is buying their first gopro who doesn't know much about what settings to use / dosen't know much about gopro in general?
Great video. Can you do a video taking the distortion off (2.0 max Lens)with fx to see how many fields of view you get after moving the distortion? If you can get the same field of view without distortion that you get with Super view without the 2.0 lens. I will buy the lens in a heartbeat.
no, I have the max 2.0 on my gp12 with media mod, I had to take the media mod off first, install the lens then put the media mod back on... no problems
The annoying thing about the max lenses is that they have these software limitations clearly made to make the next version even better. 4K60 is fine, but they could've done 5.3k 60 as far as I understand the tech behind these
I’m afraid at this moment in time you only have the option of the Standard Profile, where you can choose between Flat, Natural and Vibrant colours, maybe in a future update GoPro will give us hdr and GP-Log.
@@PhillipSkrabaThank you for the fast reply and i been hooked on buying the Hero 12 because of those Profile specially the LOG Profile, but i also want to buy one of this MAX Lens MOD but hearing out that we cant use the new Profile while using one is turn off to me on getting one, i hope in the future they can update or implement it on software update.
No my friend side by side DJI osmo is way more distorted then gopro H12, watched over 45 side by side comparisons of the 2, also go pro color is much brighter
@@PhillipSkraba that a shame I am thinking of buying a camera I really like the DJI osmo action 4 but I am going to use it when I go snowboarding do you think the max lens mod 2.0 is a must have?
It really depends on your use case scenario, if you're on a bike, a snowboard, if you need more perspective, then it's a really awesome pov. Now that it can film in 4K60 is a game changer too, love it.
@user-yu8xg8pi4y well, when you’re on a bike or on a snowboard and moving fast I would say it probably isn’t very noticeable. Walking around town, it will probably have more of an effect due to the nature of your surroundings and speed.
We’re pumped you love Max Lens Mod 2.0 as much as we do, Phillip! It’s a HERO12 game changer 💪
It's fantastic guys!! I agree, it's a game changer for the Hero 12 🔥 Now I just need to find some funky scenes to take full advantage of it!
Hi GoPro any news or future updates that we can use HDR and LOG Profile while using the Max Lens Mod in the furture? thank you in advance.
Hero 12 should come already bundled with this max lens mod, to compensate for its lack of view in the higher frame rates at higher bit rates.

Great one. Cool to see the differences.

Hey nice video! Could You do a test with (square) 4:3 recording? GoPro vs DJI A4?
I want to Vlog my trips to Disney and such like. Would you say the 2.0 would be best for me or would I get away with the 1.0 camera mod?
What is the difference in distortion between 8:7 wide (standard lens) and 4:3 max superview (max lens mod 2.0)?
Thanks for the video. Will the lens correction in the current desktop app take the banana look out of the footage?
To an extent it’s removable but sacrifices such as cropping will happen.
@@PhillipSkraba ahh, gotcha. Thanks for the reply.

thank you for this have just got the mod 2.0. I wanted to use it for my running, which view would you recommend. 🥰
It's pretty great, and that view is so wide. For running, sure, the stabe is pretty much rock solid.
Can the GoPro noticed if I mount Lens 1 or type 2?
tks for this test. A question : is the max lens mod 2.0 is ok if the gopro 12 is equiped with the media mod ? Isnt the lens too big ?
