Fun fact: Japanese game companies hate working with Nintendo on games because often times Nintendo will steal their best talent. It happened specifically the Sonic Generations team who ended up working on Mario Odyssey

@Yoshizuyuner even then, if it's interesting enough Nintendo might let them make it anyway, I doubt they'd say no to another exclusive for the Switch 2 if the ip interests them

Of note for NLG, that seems to be a case of not wanting history to repeat. NLG, just like Rare, was going to be sold to another company either way. For Rare, Nintendo was not interested in buying out companies. This ended up with Rare instead going to Microsoft. Nintendo didn't foresee this possibility, and they lost one of their greatest allies. NLG wasn't in a bad spot like Rare, but the investors (I believe) were just done with them. They were going to sell the company one way or another. Nintendo didn't want what happened with Rare to happen again because NLG is one of their best partners. So they went ahead and bit the bullet
Technically Nintendo did actually throw in an offer to buy Rare but it was literally too little and too late since there were now other players involved besides just Nintendo and Microsoft (I forget who tbh) who were bidding higher.
Honestly, I would love to know what led the investors to feel that way. NLG's previous game (Luigi's Mansion 3) had sold 14 million copies. That's guaranteed to be utterly ludicrous profit on the budget the game had assuming they get a cut of each sale, even if we don't know what it was exactly.
@@lukeo5761 Investors don't actually care about the longterm strength of a company or their assets. They care about how much _growth_ the company can achieve. Unlike *certain gaming companies* Nintendo’s acquisitions usually leave me going “holy cow that’s smart.” I was particularly happy with Next Level (I love them so much), but this one is also super smart of them! Also, on the Mortal Kombat 1 port, that was only bad because they rushed to be day and date with PS5/PC. They ported Mortal Kombat 11 to Switch and it worked really well and sold super well too, so I assume WB saw that and made them do a rush job for extra sales. :(
It's almost like acquiring studios is meant to improve your output, not just have someone else do your work for you. Surely big companies other than Nintendo understand this, right?
It also didn’t help that WB/Netherrealms was insistent they target 60 fps. If they had let them target 30 at launch and then patch up to 60 later it probably wouldn’t have looked so bad.

The fact they bought a company that makes ports put together with the fact they've been going harder on emulation and we're expecting a new console, I wonder if the new Nintendo console will be focused on bringing old games to the forefront. They've already started going for it and if they make thier new consle dual screen somehow I feel like that would be a banger. Have a company make ports of the old while you focus on newer games. Release more games with half the effort. It seems like a no brainer.
I feel as if Nintendo prefers having a strong relationship with these companies rather than outright owning them. That way, they WANT to make games for Nintendo platforms. Instead of being obligated to.
Indeed, I know some wonder why not buy a studio that's already works well with you but it's important to remember that studio independence and culture is important. When companies get bought, both those things are at risk. Nintendo letting studios be independent for better or worse is a sign of a company you can have a strong relationship with.

They seem to be a studio that specializes in porting games from more powerful systems to the switch, so my theory is that they will be making switch 2 games cross-gen
Microsoft showed that just buying companies just because there is a chance to make a lot of money is a huge risk. Nintendo chooses to make their own studios better and bigger so that they have complete control over all projects. And if they buy a company, it is a company that they can trust completely. Nintendo knows that third party support on the Switch 2 will be huge, so Shiver will help with that
Arlo also mentioned that Shiver was part of the Embracer Group, which has been laying off a ton of people recently. Nintendo may have saved them from being canned and even got it for cheap. Not to defend Embracer, but more for some clarification. Embracer had a $2 Billion deal with Savvy Games Group which had already previously invested $1 Billion into Embracer. Embracer unfortunately took this as a opportunity to buy up a bunch of studios to secure themselves as one of the next big entertainment groups. At the last minute Savvy pulled out of the deal (as far as I know, the reason still isn't public) which caused Embracer to start selling / closing everything. I remember watching a video with Bellular talking about the whole situation and then seeing videos of the CEO just looking absolutely destroyed over the news and I don't doubt that part of it is knowing how many people are about to have their lives made worse from this. I don't know the full scope of the entire deal between Savvy and Embracer, but most of all this could have been avoided if Embracer had waited for the deal to close before buying everything.
Apparently Iwata was good friends with the former head of this studio, Shiver obv has use in the porting department but id be surprised if that wasn't a big part of it.

I'm really hoping that Nintendo shows what honest growth through these kinds of deals looks like. There's nothing to tell me it won't be, but I really hope in light of studio shuttering as of late that this can be a success story
これは非常に的を絞った、妥当な範囲の買収のように思えます。また、Switch 時代の他の買収 (SRD、Nintendo Pictures) とも一致しています。 Nonetheless I was really surprised by Nintendo purchasing an Embracer studio, but this acquisition makes a lot of sense. Embracer has been selling off many studios after their failed deal with the Saudi government, and Nintendo could use extra support to build up the Switch successor's library with third party ports. They don't do acquisitions that often, so this must be a big priority for them.
The interesting thing about Shiver is that they ported Mortal Kombat 11 to the Switch which is widely seen to be one of those "impossible ports" as the game actually runs at 60FPS in combat and was very competently done. Also, both MK1 and Hogwarts Legacy on the Switch run significantly better NOW than they did at launch which is usually more a testament to a studio not being given enough time to make a port happen. The thing is, for the next several years Shiver will just continue to do exactly what they were already doing as the tweet indicated so assuming they are already contracted to port a few games over to Switch 2 the real benefit from Nintendo is that they can give Shiver even more tech support for optimization with them becoming first party and other than that they can just leave them alone and they'll continue to do what they do. Really, I only see Nintendo pouring additional funds into Shiver IF they feel like they need to scale up their operation so that they can handle multiple projects at once as they are quite small currently (the number I saw was something around 20 employees).
Shiver now being a 1st party studio could also mean that situations like what happened with MK1 is less likely to, since Nintendo probably wouldn't let 3rd party companies try to pull that kind of opressive timetable with one of their own personal studios.
One thing I can already see happening is maybe Nintendo offers Shivers services to Microsoft for Call of Duty ports, though I suspect MS would likely just have a studio like Beenox do it. They already have Unreal Engine familiarity thanks to the Mortal Kombat and Hogwarts ports, so they could be Nintendo’s big go to to tell third parties “got an Unreal project? We’ve got a studio right here to help ya out!”
Apparently shiver is working on their own ip before this happened so now Nintendo gets a new first party game in their line up I wonder what kind of game it is
It's random at first but it makes sense when you think about it. Like you said it seems they are getting ready on all fronts for the next system. Apparently Shiver will continue to be able to work externally through commissions which is great. Hoping for a fruitful relationship between the two My guess for their first 1st party port would be Zelda related
Nintendo generally only acquire studios who have shown interest in becoming a part of their brand, thus avoiding the controversial purchases that is otherwise frequent in the market. Therefore your guess about there possibly having been talks behind the scenes is, based on track record, the most likely thing that happened and is what I would put my money on as well. Beyond that they prefer to cultivate their own developers, which is why they "recently" (2022) bought a plot next to their Kyoto HQ for the purpose of building an entirely new studio - that building won't be finished before 2028, but will allow them to eventually double their own talent. It's tagged for R&D, but a lot of Nintendo's R&D also result in new franchises, and this will also free up space in the original HQ for development of established franchises. In other words, Nintendo is growing positively right now.
My favorite sports are the old school arcade ports that you can buy. Hamster comes to mind. They've been hoarding every neo Geo game and all those old arcade games made by SNK in a couple other companies to all these new systems and I say keep them coming
Shiver port Hogwart Legacy, Mortal Kombat 11 & Mortal Kombal 1 to Switch. MK11 flawlessly 60fps gameplay is so good & latest MK1 patch also is excellent. HL is big modern open world game and it's playable on Switch is so amazing ❤
I was initially baffled by the purchase after the ports of MK1 and HL to Switch but I was told HL was quite a miracle port to get running at all... MK1 was so bad at launch it was absurd... but there has come a recent patch that has made the game more or less in line with Mk11's port that they also did, which was generally regarded as decent.
MK1 was simply because they were given no time to actually port the game, WB wanted it out on switch same day as PS5 & PC but Shiver were trying to make a game made for those consoles fit into the Switch...that wasn't happening at that time frame. Now that they had time to work on it the game runs fine.
It seems everybody has forgotten about one major detail from last years 2023 Xbox games conference; which is when Phil spencer announced that he would be partnering up with Nintendo to bring activision and blizzard games to the switch; and more specifically, he mentioned call of duty. (Over watch is already a title, as well as a couple activision/blizzard games). Idk, i think this plays a huge role into Nintendo’s decision to buy this porting company. We all know how the old call of duty titles performed on Nintendo hardware… (not really good). This goes without saying that the switch 2 will be very powerful, I want to say competitive with the XSX and PS5, so porting/transferring games traditionally made for those consoles should bring in a lot of new customers, with an up to par quality of course given this action by Nintendo- and the deal Phil spencer made which acquired activision and blizzard in the first place (to make them more accessible, to make more money) will definitely play out in front of us on the activision/blizzard side of things for sure. In high quality!
They already did, MK1 was patched recently and works well. Shiver released it as it was because WB forced them to port a PS5 game to Switch in basically no time at all.
I'm pretty confident they bought it because they own shiver, the logo even has shark fins in it. Clearly Nintendo saw that and realized it should be ours.
Is Scribblenauts on Switch? I never got to enjoy that series when it originally came out. I would love to see some of DS and 3DS comeover since they closed the store
Pretty confident that Shiver will work to bring 3rd party games to the Switch 2, but obviously, being a 1st party studio, the ports will be much better than on the Switch 1.
Hypothetically, if it’s true the switch 2 will be far more powerful than the switch then then it’s most likely they bought Shiver to port/modify games on Switch 2 in order to let them run on switch 1. They could be the cross platform team + Port team
Don't believe the claims made on the Mortal Kombat 1 port. It was before the day 1 patch which made it run and look much better. It's still a switch port though.
I really cant blame them for MK1. WB gave them the near impossibe task of putting a highly visual PS5/XSX game onto hardware thats essentially just a suped up WiiU. Ive heard they did an incredible job with Hogwarts, so im excited to see what Nintendo has planned for them.
This is a very interesting purchase by Nintendo. Its bit the company i would have wanted but honestly theu have proven they are talented team do i am very excited for the future.

I'm really hoping that Nintendo shows what honest growth through these kinds of deals looks like. There's nothing to tell me it won't be, but I really hope in light of studio shuttering as of late that this can be a success story
これは非常に的を絞った、妥当な範囲の買収のように思えます。また、Switch 時代の他の買収 (SRD、Nintendo Pictures) とも一致しています。
Nonetheless I was really surprised by Nintendo purchasing an Embracer studio, but this acquisition makes a lot of sense. Embracer has been selling off many studios after their failed deal with the Saudi government, and Nintendo could use extra support to build up the Switch successor's library with third party ports. They don't do acquisitions that often, so this must be a big priority for them.
Now if only they could buy tango games, rest in peace tango you were taken too soon
My prediction for the first Switch 2 rerelease by Shiver is the Golden Sun duology (or maybe even trilogy) being remastered

Now that’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time…
I wonder if Nintendo plans to have them handle next-gen patches for current-gen Switch games
Maybe it’ll be my sweet sweet kid Icarus uprising
Apparently shiver is working on their own ip before this happened so now Nintendo gets a new first party game in their line up I wonder what kind of game it is
I'm really hoping Nintendo has designed the next console in such a way that allows for DS game ports/remasters. They'd make so much money oh my god.
Maybe this means that we’ll get some actual quality assurance for 3rd party ports.
It's random at first but it makes sense when you think about it. Like you said it seems they are getting ready on all fronts for the next system. Apparently Shiver will continue to be able to work externally through commissions which is great. Hoping for a fruitful relationship between the two
My guess for their first 1st party port would be Zelda related
@topicarlo what is this game in the background?
Now that they had time to work on it the game runs fine.
rip the person playing, that CPU is smoking them
I googled them, they made some really impressive ports so I guess that’s why.
I bet twitter's going to have a field day with this one
WHAT AN EXCITING TIME
I can't wait for the _Wii Music_ 'wiimastered' edition.
If we are lucky they’ll fix the ports they’ve made, especially MK1. Great Stuff as always.
They already did, MK1 was patched recently and works well. Shiver released it as it was because WB forced them to port a PS5 game to Switch in basically no time at all.
I feel like Shiver could make a WarioWare game. Imagine Smooth Moves or WarioWare Gold remastered on Switch 2.
Ports galore on the New Nintendo Switch
I'm pretty confident they bought it because they own shiver, the logo even has shark fins in it. Clearly Nintendo saw that and realized it should be ours.
Arlo where is the sequel to Bug Interview
Very much so!
I wonder if they're planning on "remastering" (think like ps4 pro enabled games) some switch games to the next switch with the help of shiver studios
Is Scribblenauts on Switch? I never got to enjoy that series when it originally came out. I would love to see some of DS and 3DS comeover since they closed the store
Yes serveral scribblenauts are on switch
Pretty confident that Shiver will work to bring 3rd party games to the Switch 2, but obviously, being a 1st party studio, the ports will be much better than on the Switch 1.
They haven't bought it. They announce their intention of buying it and are in the process of such, but the ink hasn't dried yet.
the mortal kombat 1 port *was* actually pretty decent, after it got patched. the launch version was pretty bad though
Something about this makes me wonder if this could be in any way related to Nintendo's history with third-party emulations of their older games
Arlo content every stinking day I love it
Maybe they'll be assigned specifically to Microsoft ports since there will be a steady stream of those. So, my guess will be Killer Instinct.
MK was fixed it’s good now
Yeah most people ignore this but it's been patched and aside from some long loading times the gameplay experience is solid now.
6:11 They should look into buying Big Red Button as well then
I really cant blame them for MK1. WB gave them the near impossibe task of putting a highly visual PS5/XSX game onto hardware thats essentially just a suped up WiiU. Ive heard they did an incredible job with Hogwarts, so im excited to see what Nintendo has planned for them.
Nintendo might be interested in how they get next gen software running on last gen hardware
We need a Ever Oasis port!
They may begin working on updates for Switch 1 titles to run better on Switch 2
Inhousing a strong technical partner is a good idea, i think. It's not really a games studio so much as a nintendo port supporting house
Pretty smart I guess if they wanted they can improve things just like they did with retro studios? it's a high possibility.
Mortal Kombat 1 was the game that wasn't great at launch. It was quickly patched though, it's now very good.
my dream is an arms port
They could be heading up switch to switch 2 emulation, there’s not a hugh leap between ports and emulation
This is a very interesting purchase by Nintendo. Its bit the company i would have wanted but honestly theu have proven they are talented team do i am very excited for the future.
