I’m watching Buffy & Angel on Hulu for the first time since I wasn’t interested during its original 90’s run. This is the first scene I looked up on TH-cam so I could watch it again. I’ve gained a new and better perspective of Giles.

The writer once explained in an interview that they didn’t make willow a bisexual because they were worried that people would view that as just a phase she would go through as it wasn’t as acceptable to be part of the lgbtq+ community when the show was running so they decided to make her a lesbian instead which would make it seem less of a phase and more of this is her and this is who she loves type thing

Fun Fact: This scene is what lead to his casting in Repo! The Genetic Opera. When the topic of who'd they'd like for the role came up one one of the writers immediately suggest Anthony Stewart Head. The other writer was kinda shocked and was like, "What? You mean Giles?! From Buffy? Look I know people like the musical episode but that's not really the kind of style we-" and of course the other writer immediately pulled up a video of this scene. And then they had their hearts set on him. (also sorry for not remembering the exact quote or names of the writers/director it was on the commentary track of an old dvd that is currently in storage)

I don't understand why they went all "Willow is gay now, she can't be interested in men anymore" instead of making her a bi character or a bi lesbian who, now prefers women over men. It is stupid, it doesnt't work that way
Actually sometimes it does. Some people who figure out they are gay have had good straight relationships in the past and truly loved the people they were with. Eventually when they discover they are gay, they look back on that time and notice that something was missing from their previous relationships. They still look back on their time fondly but they know that they aren't straight or Bi just because they loved being with these people
At that time I think TV just wasn't ready for an explicitly bisexual character. A gay and straight binary was a lot easier for audiences to digest, so they went with calling her a lesbian instead of "complicating" it. I absolutely think Willow's bisexual.
