Hello! I love this project! A quiet fidget toy, how fun! There`s one thing though I wanted to give you my feedback on as a neurodivergent person: the yellow background is great to see what`s happening and helps reduce noise around the project (please keep one colored backgrounds👍), but the variegated yarn makes it very difficult for me to see the stitches and where I am in the project and following along. I had hoped for a more "cleaner" version of yarn (one colored), as it would be much much easier for me to follow and understand. As I`ve seen you made the slug in other colors, I wanted to mention ☺ It`s my first project of yours and I hope to create many more of your awesome patterns and creations. Stay creative!🐌
Thank you for the feedback, I hadn't considered that! I normally work in single coloured yarns only, and will try to stick to them in future, but unfortunately this weeks video (a snake!) will also be in a multi-coloured yarn.

I'm only partially through this pattern and I can not thank you enough for sharing. I'm making a bunch for my sons special education teacher for her student. I'm working on a number of different crochet sensory toys for them. I think they're really going to love these
I love attaching in the round! Sewing on pieces is what held me up from trying amigurumi yet. This will be my first! I love the idea of just stitching pieces in as I go! I'm using cotton yarn because it's what my daughter picked. Hopefully it works as well! Thanks so much for showing me this was possible!
You are the first person I’ve seen that holds their yarn the same way I do! ❤ I could never get an even tension with my finger held out, thank you for showing me I’m not crazy 😁
This is where you put the colored segments like her white one. For round 10, I change colors. And then on round 14, it should be the last round in the color. Same thing with round 23. Change the color after you do 6 inc. And change the color after you do the back of the segment, for example round 39, which is 20 back post single crochet. Then change to your other color on round 40, which is 4[sc3tog,2sc]. Body segment #4, change color on round 49. Body segment #5, Change color on round 52. Also on body segment #5, change color on the 6 dec. And lastly on body segment #6, change color in the front post single crochet.
I saved this video to eventually get back to. Im so glad I did, ive got the cutest fidget slug sitting on my desk and I am going to have to make like ten more. I definitely know what everyone is getting for christmas.
Thank you so much for making such a clear and helpful video. I started crocheting recently and this was the second project I tried. Going strait from a beginner granny square to a complex three-dimensional shape was a bit of a jump, but I was still able to follow along and I learned a lot. Also these fidget slugs are really good for stimming with. My first one was too big to carry around, but I made another out of smaller yarn that I could keep in my purse. They're really good to have.
This was the first video of yours I ran across. I had a great time making this and I am sure my grandson will love it. Thank you so much for sharing your designs with us. i’m still a beginner, started a couple months ago, but i love fidget toys! i have a fidget slug but occasionally the noise of different fidget toys can draw unwanted attention lol. i love that this will be silent (and soft) and i’ll probably end up making a bunch in different colors for my other neurodivergent friends as well 😂❤ thanks for sharing!!

Wow! It took me 11 hours to make this cute little guy. If you are reading this Complicated Knots, can you tell us where you did the color changes on your white slug with the pastel colors? I put some instructions on how I did my color changes, but I think I messed up a few times.

I have trouble reading patterns on paper because I don't quite understand the writing. Videos make it easier. My girlfriend wanted a slug like the 3D printed ones. Don't have the printer yet so this is the next best thing.

Just finished! Very lovely design! Had some trouble with gaps in my stitching with the front-post crochet and the decreases but I think that might be my own issue and not your design hahaha Very nice to fidget with! Reminds me of the wooden snake i had as a kid but this time, no pinched fingers! :D Thank you for showing this design and pattern!
Any plans to make a solid version, too? Like tweaking the current pattern to make an amigurumi? I'd stuff the inside with something noisy to make a shaker slug lol.
I've made my first slug and I really like it, although it seems somewhat off. I feel like the segments are a little twisted (I made sure my stitch count is right after every round), and since the pattern isn't symmetrical I had an urge to do some additional shifting stitches to keep that shape straight, but I noticed you don't do that . That's why I came here to ask: does the pattern consider the rotation of rounds, or should I do these stitches to keep the beginning straight? It's hard for me to tell myself because I can't seem to understand your patterns as I do with other ones. Hopefully I made my point clear cause it was kind of hard to explain :'D I'd also really appreciate an answer, I look forward to making some more of your wonderful patterns and would like to know before I start them too :D
My slug is a lot less compact. I'm sure I did something wrong, but I'm thinking of running a small elastic (1/8") through from head to tail to make him more compact. But so far I love him! (Or her. Or them.)😊

I notice you when you increase, you do the first stitch through the front loop, then the second through both loops. Never noticed that before, and other tutorials I think show to do both stiches into both loops. Why do you do it like you do? :)
As a fellow 30-something, welcome! Well-spotted, it's something called an invisible increase. Not everyone agrees, but I personally think it minimises the appearance of increase-holes on your finished piece. Try it on your next project, see if you like it!
I love this!! Currently working one up and I dunno what is happening cuz I’m doing exactly what you are but the eye stalks are tilted off to the side really far. If I sc before adding the first stalk they sit right tho, so it’s no biggy. I’m just very confused cuz I’ve stared at your video and I know I’m doing the instructions exactly but we’re getting different results somehow 😅

There is! I always work my increases as "invisible", which means the first stitch goes in the front loop only, and then the second stitch goes through both loops. It's a small detail, but it makes the increase less visible on the finished piece, because regular increase leave a slightly larger hole in your stitching.
I am in the process of making one, thinking I could make 4 for the grands' Easter baskets BUT I'm such a slow crocheter and my hands hurt so bad. LOL. Maybe for next year?? (I'm more of a knitter.)

hi. I cant remember if you have it anywhere (i couldnt find it when i just looked) but are we allowed to sell the things we make from your patterns? Like at markets or in our own etsy store? I wanted to double check before I did (im still making one of these for myself though) as normally I can easily find if someone is ok with that or not but i havent been able to find anything for your stuff Dx
currently working off your written pattern. Came to your video for attaching the eyestalks. On behalf of all the people that are easily distracted by color, etc. between your colorful finger nails, the varigated yarn it is very difficult to see the individual stitches in this video and in the written pattern. One light, one-color yarn is so much easier to see the stitches in the written pattern and on your video. Otherwise the pattern is easy to follow. Just my thoughts
@ComplecatedKnots Quick question, am I right in seeing that you don't close each round with a slip stitch before starting the next round? (on the eye stalks for far). Thanks in advance
I've noticed you tend to use back/front post stitches where other designers might use back/front loop only stitches. Is there a reason for this? The post sc can be quite hard to do and I'm curious 😄
I do it as it gives way more structure to the piece because of how it places tension on the work. Crochet is kindof a squishy medium, but post stitching actually lets your have edges. That said, if post stitching is too hard, you can usually substitute in loop stitching, you'll just end up with a "softer"/rounder version of the design.
So I am very, very new, but do you do your increases through just the front of the stitch instead of the whole stitch? It’s hard to tell on this yarn. I’ve never seen it that way, is it easier?
I use something called "invisible increases" - you work the first stitch of your increase through the front loop only, and then the second stitch of your increase through both loops. I think it looks better than regular increases :)
We have 4ply here, but as I said in the video, I use a 2mm hook for that. It could be an inconsistent labelling issue, but as a point of interest, could you measure the wpi (wraps per inch) of your yarn? all you do is grab a hook and wrap yarn around it to see how many times it wraps within an inch. It's a way of standardizing yarn sizes to a certain point. The 8ply I use is 11wpi, and suggests a 4mm hook (but I size down)
I think it depends on the yarn brand. I have some 4-ply yarn (which is a DK or 3 weight) that suggests a 5mm hook, but also others that suggest a 4.5 or 4 mm hook. The 4-ply yarn she uses for the mini slug, would be like a sport weight or 2 weight yarn. I could be wrong though.
....i am absolutely terrible at the stuffing part xD I try not to over stuff and it feels like theres not a lot of stuffing but it doesnt squish as good when i finish it xD woops

With the strand of yarn we run through the middle, could you pull it tighter? I think elastic is a great solution 👍

currently working off your written pattern. Came to your video for attaching the eyestalks. On behalf of all the people that are easily distracted by color, etc. between your colorful finger nails, the varigated yarn it is very difficult to see the individual stitches in this video and in the written pattern. One light, one-color yarn is so much easier to see the stitches in the written pattern and on your video. Otherwise the pattern is easy to follow. Just my thoughts
Ill be sticking to solid colours in future 👍

Hi! You are correct, I work in a continuous spiral. That means no slipstitches to join your rows :)

When you increase, do you do the first of the two stitches through the front loop only, or am I just seeing it weird?
Micro crocheting this bc I can, using 0 weight yarn using a 1.6mm hook or use recommended hook for said weight

I've noticed you tend to use back/front post stitches where other designers might use back/front loop only stitches. Is there a reason for this? The post sc can be quite hard to do and I'm curious 😄
I do it as it gives way more structure to the piece because of how it places tension on the work.
Crochet is kindof a squishy medium, but post stitching actually lets your have edges.
That said, if post stitching is too hard, you can usually substitute in loop stitching, you'll just end up with a "softer"/rounder version of the design.

So I am very, very new, but do you do your increases through just the front of the stitch instead of the whole stitch? It’s hard to tell on this yarn. I’ve never seen it that way, is it easier?
I use something called "invisible increases" - you work the first stitch of your increase through the front loop only, and then the second stitch of your increase through both loops. I think it looks better than regular increases :)

I have so many questions about the yarn you guys have. I have 4ply yarn here and it recommends a 5mm or sometimes even a 5.5mm hook
We have 4ply here, but as I said in the video, I use a 2mm hook for that. It could be an inconsistent labelling issue, but as a point of interest, could you measure the wpi (wraps per inch) of your yarn? all you do is grab a hook and wrap yarn around it to see how many times it wraps within an inch. It's a way of standardizing yarn sizes to a certain point. The 8ply I use is 11wpi, and suggests a 4mm hook (but I size down)

I think it depends on the yarn brand. I have some 4-ply yarn (which is a DK or 3 weight) that suggests a 5mm hook, but also others that suggest a 4.5 or 4 mm hook. The 4-ply yarn she uses for the mini slug, would be like a sport weight or 2 weight yarn. I could be wrong though.
