I wonder, did you ever try Conan Exiles? People don't usually put that in the RPG category, but I recently started playing in single-player and was really surprised. Besides the building aspect it is a full fledged sandbox RPG. A really good one in my opinion with a cool world to explore. It feels a lot like my modded survival/nofasttravel Skyrim playthroughs at times and I do like the combat a lot.

So... What about jrpgs? That genre is all console, mostly turn-based.
But yeh, the term "role-playing" can apply to a great many things, not just your typical baldurs gate style games.

    • @supercalifragic1551
      @supercalifragic1551 5 ปีที่แล้ว +80

@@HerrFinsternis I'm not into Jrpgs, and while I enjoy irpgs like BG or Divinity, I really wish there were more Bethesda-like RPGs. Open worlds with a ton of interactibility, preferably improved upon with more interactibility and more depth. And of course, first-third person toggleability and complete character customization to the utmost degree possible.
And more RPGs need to go the Dragon Age route with alternate starts, but expanded on even more with more options and not just racial in nature, and more impacts on the narrative.

The meaning of RPG has evolved, it's that simple.
Want an example? Prove to me that The Witcher 3 is a better "Role Playing Game" experience than any Fifa or Madden career mode.
Tabletop RPG is about playing a role, that's it. There are even tables that go for a more theatrical approach instead of the numbers and stats. So yea, basically in Madden you can create your character, live his life, level up attributes, some even have a dialog system. Some sports games are actually more "RPG" than self entitled RPGs.

    • @azminek7154
      @azminek7154 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

@HardWarUK Rather it's the fault of the publishers who want to make everything accessible to the masses. RPG was never that. Even console RPGs are keep being dumbed down for mass market appeal. If a publisher says they make their successful franchise more "inclusive" than you can be sure, they plan to exclude their hardcore fans for the normies.

    • @tigerfestivals5137
      @tigerfestivals5137 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

It's because rpg has evolved into a broad genre. It's a good thing if you ask me. There are plenty of ways to narrow your search like specifying "arpg" "jrpg" "turn based combat" "crpg" "open world", etc. It's really no different to how genres like "first person shooter" or "simulation game" work where the individual games within the net can be radically different

Dragon's Dogma is one of my favorite games. The #1 game that needs a sequel with a higher budget in my opinion. Polish the combat even more (Particularly even more magic and magic mechanics), and give it a Bethesda style world and interactability, with Witcher storyline and world detail / sense of scale. Dragon's Dogma's world suffered due to the lack of funding, I read the Devs wanted to do more but they were at their limits. Limits that could be satisfied with a sequel... Even if it duplicated the existing game and put a whole new game's worth of development to expanding it.

It needs to be multiplayer, hardcore like dark souls, maybe with a pvp system, and an actually decent storyline. Dragon's Dogma had a shit story, and the graphics definitely need updating. It would also be pretty cool if they included something like a camping system, more open-world cities and dungeons. Roaming NPCs with dialogue and systems that make the world feel more realistic and immersive. Basically take the combat system of Dragon's Dogma and place it in Skyrim with multiplayer combat and pvp.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is also criminally underrated. It's almost similar to Dragon's Dogma in some ways, but at it's core plays like what Fable actually should've been. Being able to choose between might, finesse, and sorcery with any combination of two in between, or just doing all three trees at once adds so many layers of customization that I would dare to say rivals Dragon's Dogma's vocations.
The mixture of skill trees combined with the fate cards/shifts can make your character feel very personal to you with the fate cards that act as your "class" with their own sets of passive bonuses that compliment your chosen active skills. All of the class combos get upped to the 11 when you decide to build a universalist. (combination of all three trees) Instead of feeling like a jack of all trades, master of none, you're rewarded with a passive making you a master of all martial and magical weapons and more than competent in the three practices, without being completely overpowered.
What really hurts the game are inventory glitches, audio/visual bugs, and the game as a whole feeling way too easy, even on the hardest difficulty. Some people would argue that it's too long as well since the core game is actually longer than Skyrim and all it's expansions, but it's an overall satisfying experience.

  • @adamantiumreaver4283

Truly, dragon's dogma has the most satisfying combat yet. I think you fell short on this video. There are many underlying gameplay features such as how ogres always go and attack womens first , how hydras can swallow you, how chimeras can pin you and ravage you, how Griffins fall off the sky when you burn them, and so on. The lack of enemy variety is equally balanced with the personality and multiple ways to deal with each one of them. Then you have the synergy with the pawns and how you rise your personal pawn. For fighter pawns is always fun when you grapple hold humanoid enemies and your partners come rushing to deal the final blow. How if you fell off the sky they would catch you and save you an unexpected death, how they restore your stamina. Truly, deciding between an utilitarian or a guardian class pawn, was always a tough choice. The is no other magic system that evokes anime feels (ecsplosion) like dragon's dogma. Im still trying to find a game that can scratch that "classic classes feel" (mage, warrior, priest, etc) that isn't a turn based, top down isometric view, or mmo. Even the story that many people say was boring, has its amazing revelatory moments, sadly getting to those moments are very far and between, fighting the dragon and the following cutscene was an exciting twist, and even more so, the ending of the game is one of the most inconclusive ,yet unique, aspects of the game. To me those 2 plot twists saved the game's story to me. The problem with this game is as you stated, the over world is boring and dead or full of things to kill dead and that's all you'll be doing for the rest of the game. The side quest are mostly fetch one thing, escort someone (which I never did cause I once had the dude that changes your classes die on me and I was stuck), or kill things more dead. To me, not a problem since I enjoy more the combat in games than story, to other, the contrary.

-coop (so I can adventure with a couple of friends or assist new players needing help)
    -more verity in magic!
-make two handed more useful ( it felt underwhelming compared to other classes)
    -more enemy verity
-survival mode making you have to eat and drink as a difficulty with harder enemies
What do you wan to see brought into a new dragons dogma?

Some of the things you can do in this game that are never listed but are absolutely a blast such as if you play Strider and have the skill Mad Dash you use it as you approach an enemy you hit heavy attack your character does a slide tackle and upends the enemy or how if you use Soaring Stone and have a Ranger pawn that has a high inclination to Utilitarian and they will pick the enemy off in mid-air. one open world action rpg I've found recently that has attained a nice balance between RPG and action is Ashen.
It rewards exploring the open world with items that increase our stats as well as the rare and unique items. Think of it like the spirit items in Breath of the Wild. But quests reward better stat increases and additional gameplay mechanics. It also seems like it's taken the dark souls action dungeon crawl format and manage to apply it well into an open world.

    • @HerrFinsternis

Yes I loved that game. It's light in the implementation of souls mechanics, and offers a far more cheerful atmosphere along with it. "Dark souls - the light-hearted edition" so to speak :)
And I liked the companions, the simple yet effective approach to them. They kick ass and all you have to wonder about is whether to bring one of the waifu's or stache-bro.

@@7dayspking which is why we started using the term action-adventure, to describe games like tomb raider and indeed Ashen and to distinguish their genre from the adventure games from the 80s and 90s as well as the full on action games of that era. @@7dayspking 7dayspking myst, monkey island, the longest journey are all very different from each other too, yet we call them all adventure games. Should we chop that up into sub genres?
And I didn't mean to imply that the term action-adventure was invented because of tomb raider itself, it was just an example of a game who's genre I thought we wouldn't be debating, that's why I used it.
Because it's becoming a bit tiresome to talk about this with you. You find fault with everything. I take things too broad, too narrow, incorrect alltogether etc. It's not a conversation when one of the parties involved is so rigidly holding their oen definitions. Things change and (d)evolve. Over time genres change in their implementation. Get used to it.
So here it is, Ashen is a cool game just like the OP said. We both enjoyed it a lot, we suspect others might too. I don't know how to tag it and I don't care. And why should I, it doesn't change anything about the game.

Well they did make a Dragons Dogma sequel of sorts. It was an MMO but it was only for Japan and never shipped anywhere else.
I think the problem with the overworld was you spent a ton of traveling back and forth by foot with no fast travel or mounts.
They tried to incorporate marker stones and teleport stones to help alleviate this a bit but, more often than not you spent long periods of time traveling to a point, exploring a dungeon and then having to trek all the way back to your quest giver (when you are low on healing supplies due to dungeon delving) and usually at night when the tougher enemies are about almost ensuring your death at beginning levels.
SPOILER: Fun note, if you ever complete the play through and make your way all the way down to the bottom of that giant fissure that opens up at the end to fight the Seneschal(the true final boss) your character becomes the new Seneschal. Use the knife to commit suicide and play through again, the Seneschal you fight will be the last character you created voiced and with your vocation and abilities you had in the previous playthrough.
I thought that was a pretty neat gimmick.

    [Dodge Rolling Everything]
    "DaRk SoUlS iS bEsT cOmBaT!"
Early Vindictus, before it devolved into another fucking weebfest, now *that* was a good combat system.

Yea, it was a slower and had/has lot of variation of hack n slash moves and had little "sandbox" style to it like grabing mobs, hooking Bosses with chains.. I think Crimson Desert's combat will be similar, not too similar but nearly. And it's not an MMO anymore it will be Singleplayer/coop
I get it "Dodge Rolling Everything" is bad, but i like the Witcher 3 take on it with the "half spin" or the long dodge, or deflect/parry, but you had to know which to use on which encounter

There is a mod you can download to give your fighter the forward roll from the assassin (dagger) class and once you realize how to do it, you can replace any skill pretty much from any class with it, effectively giving you a dodge roll on all builds which makes the combat fucking perfect. Especially making bbi way more fun as it looks like they took inspiration from the souls series for the dlc.
Also on a side note, souls combat is so much fun i think because it uses subliminal musical timing, and once you click with it, it becomes addictive as hell like playing the drums or any instrument for that matter.

Darksouls combat is trashgarbadge. I said it. It's only hard because they purposely design it to be obtuse and awkward. Kind of like the first Resident Evil games being scary because of the sense of helplessness that comes from the awful controls.

There is a lot more to the combat in the Souls series other than it being hard.

you nailed it about the open world part, more towns if necessary, DD sorely needed that, more people but not necessarily more delivery quests, but maybe some escorts quests for caravans here and there, but that would mean your pawns have to have dialogue along the way or mid camp probably.

I've reinstalled DD. My Arisen and pawn are min-maxing Assassin & Sorcerer respectively at level 100.
I just have to hand over wake stones, finish game & remember not to level up in the wrong class while I'm grinding classes between levels in my next playthrough. LIQUID VIM FTW!

I love the game because it doesn't include the little anoying numbers poping to indicate damage, only a very discreet little bar, the characters actually run, climb and jump without looking in slow motion. And I love the pawns.

    Shadow of War has:
    - Parameters, like HP, Damage, Defense, etc. You can uprade them.
    - It has loot that changes the character's parameters, they can also change the way you play, like giving you passives etc
    - It has elemental damage and states, like fire and burning, ice and frozen, etc
    - The Orc system, that uses everything I said and some other things
I mean. Of course Shadow of war is a RPG. It has multiple rpg elements, even The Division 2 is a rpg. In both games you spend hours making builds, learning all the math and numbers. You role play in those games for sure.

I used to think this game was underrated, but it has a lot of fans. I still think it’s under appreciated and this video explains why.
