Unfortunately Grandia 1 hd remaster has so many issues with graphics being worse than on saturn as it used inferior PS1 copy of the game, i encountered a bug of game randomly crashing when entering/exiting towns as that is when game changes resolution between town map and world map which can cause a crash as PC games do not like resolution changes in that manner. I still managed to 100% the game with all them issues but I really wished they had not overpromised and under delivered with the HD remaster.

Excited to grab some grub, sit down and watch this!
What I will say, in regards to your introduction statement from my personal viewpoint:
Even though you've never really talked much about JRPGs since I've been watching, I actually noticed your fondness for the scene with a lot of the "pseudo-references" to popular ones (or at least ones I know of) through fonts, intro inspirations etc. Enough so in fact, to actually check your channel from BEFORE I started watching, to see if you'd ever covered any JRPG type stuff previously, before the Resident Evil and Silent Hill retrospectives!
Needless to say, regardless of all of that, to ME at least, as an absolute fan of your content, I could definitely tell you were a JRPG fan, even if it went unspoken on the Survival Horror stuff a lot, so I see this video here is an absolute *WIN*.
Again, super excited to grab some monch and watch through all of this tonight!
And I wouldn't mind seeing more content on different genres of games you love in the future! Your commentary on any game you cover that I've played/haven't have always been interesting and insightful to me, and even inspired me to go back to older games I used to practically worship as a kid, and pop 'em in for my own "retrospective" take on them, like the entire 3D Legend of Zelda line-up in release order and the Metroid Prime Trilogy! (As well as any of the 2D games I could readily get my hands on!!!)
Thanks for the stellar content as always Jared; keep on rocking,
    - Gen

I really enjoyed this list and am going to try out a lot of these. An obscure one i recommend people try out is Phantom Brave. It's a strategy rpg that uses a radius system rather than a grid system and has unique physics stuff (bouncing, sliding, the ability to knock enemies off the map as an alternative to killing them). Also a lot of unit customization and what not. It's probably my favorite srpg.

@30:00 look up the program "z-translate". It can hook into Retroarch (and standalone emulators and basically everything else) and will automatically machine-translate any on-screen foreign language text on the fly by superimposing the translated text over top of the original text in the actual game such that you don't need to constantly be flipping back and forth between applications or have another monitor.

Hey I dunno if you've heard of the game or if I missed it in your videos but you may like Skies of Arcadia. The original game was for the Dreamcast and it was remastered onto the GameCube. I also feel that it's SUPER underrated and was one of my favorite RPGs of that era, just a suggestion if you wanna check it out if you haven't already

Always nice to see Grandia get some recognition, great series.
One SNES game I never see get mentioned in these is Arcana on SNES, which I played a ton as a kid. Bahamut Lagoon is another great one, hard to find people who played it due to the localization, but there's a good fan released translation ROM and later Wii and Wii U re-releases.
Also, Tactics Ogre and the Shadow Hearts series.

I also happened upon Growlanser Generations, and it is still in my top 10 all time JRPGs. Growlanser 2 my be short, but it has several possible endings (one of which takes the story down an entirely different arc) which gives a ton of replayability. I think I played through it at least 5 times.
Resonance of Fate is all kinds of fun... at first. But the combat never evolves. It's exactly the same in the first battle as it is 30 hours in. That made the otherwise awesome and unique combat get stale really fast, so I never could finish it.
With how much you like Strategy RPGs, if you haven't played it, you should definitely check out Brigandine on the PS1. It got totally overshadowed because it released at about the same time as FF7, but it's my all time favorite game. It's pretty lacking on story, but MORE than make up for it on the strategy side. Easiest way I can explain it is [Insert Franchise] Tactics meets Pokemon meets Risk. It has near endless replayability.

Can we please stop calling Legend of Dragoon underrated, underappreciated, unknown, or forgotten? I have never had a conversation with a new person about JRPGs without Legend of Dragoon coming up. EVERYBODY knows it. It was a Greatest hits title and the highest selling non-SquEnix RPG on the system.

I haven't played Wachenroder yet, but I did mod my Sega Saturn with Terraonion's MODE disc emulator.
Plenty of english translations do exist, such as the ones for Shining Force 3, scenarion 1, 2 and 3 (those games are an absolute blast to play), Policenauts, etc.
But Wachenroder has indeed been translated into english on january this year, just after seeing you talk about that game I've decided I'm gonna give the translated version a chance.
The prices of Saturn games have gone through the roof and it's cheaper to mod it nowadays, also it's great playing translated games on legitimate hardware.

Pretty disappointed that you only focused on JRPGs. The title of the video lead me to believe that this would cover RPGs in general, not just one niche subgenre.
Should have named it "Obscure Forgotten and Underrated JRPGs" instead.

Woo RPG time! :) I love me some survival horror, but my RPG obsession can’t be topped, haha. And I’m always happy to learn about some more games that I’ve missed.
Shining Soul looks like a simple, fun game. I can imagine multiplayer for this being a blast. I could see myself losing a lot of hours in this. :P The intro screen for character selection reminds me a lot of the SaGa Frontier intro screen. Not that that’s important, just had a similar look to me.
Suikoden games are so good! Definitely a series I think any RPG fan should give a shot. I remember my introduction to the series was a friend of my brother bringing the first game over and letting me borrow it. I remember keeping the game for probably much longer than he expected. :P But still, so glad that he did let me borrow it. Looking forward to Eiyuden Chronicles! :)
Emerald Dragon looks like an interesting game. The fighting system looks like a distant cousin to Lunar or Grandia with its movement based combat. AI companions in battles can be a pain to deal with, but I understand it helping to keep battle going quickly. Gotta appreciate fan translators bringing these games to us over here! :)
Speaking of Grandia. :D Much love for the games, even though I missed out on this series for so long. I had my first playthrough blind for my TH-cam channel and so glad I did play it! I do still need to play Extreme and 3. I’ll have to get to that soon!
Wachenroder looks like an interesting game! Shame it didn’t come out over here. I also missed out on the Saturn, and technically, am still missing out. :P I need to pick up a console sometime. I did get a good deal on a copy of Albert Odyssey and really need to get a way to play it.
Legend of Dragoon, such a good game! Have to give it to FF7, it opening the RPG floodgates gave us some excellent titles for the PS1 era, even if everyone felt like they had to deem themselves an “FF7 killer”. :P I do still get a kick out of the attack names being shouted after succeeding the times button presses.
I was lucky enough to stumble on Growlanser Generations on the PS2 and pick up the copy when it first came out. I haven’t gone any farther with the series though. I need to fix that!
I haven’t played Resonance of Fate. I know I’ve seen it on store shelves before but hadn’t looked into it. A comparison to Cowboy Bebop? You’ve got my attention! Ring of Red looks like one I need to pick up. I love alternate history type stories. I’ll have to pick up both of these games.
Excellent video as usual, man! I hope you share more underrated RPG goodness on the channel soon! ;)

also, on topic of Obscure JRPGs, I think Wild ARMs and Front Mission series need more love
Wild ARMs is one of the closest things we can get to a Wild West JRPG. It's a world where certain individuals get to use an ARM, which is a superpowered gun, but people are scared of them since they were used in war by demons so ARM wielders often catch a lot of shit even when they are being objectively heroic and you play as one of them. The game itself plays like a JRPG but each playable character has a unique gimmick assigned to them: Rudy the ARM wielder can shoot custom bullets that do various things, Cecilia can do magic and summon various things to aid you in asskicking and then there's Jack, the cynical Samurai Cowboy who is not powered by any ARM or magic and is simply *really* good with a sword, to a point he can often outdamage Rudy.
Front Mission series can be compared to Ring of Red since both deal with mechs, political intrigue and *a lot* of war crimes. Its main gimmick is that you can shoot off and disable particular limbs of the enemy mech, preventing them from doing stuff, say you destroy their legs, well now they move only 1 tile at a time and cannot dodge your attacks, or you can try to kill it outright by aiming for the body if you feel like they pose too much of a danger and need them dead, but you get rewarded with more EXP if you destroy the mech entirely. In FM3, with some skills you can even kill the pilot and get the mech for yourself or shoot off everything but the body which makes the enemy pilot decide "do I continue fighting and die or run away and leave everything behind for the enemy to use?", though you get to "insist" on surrender if during their decision period you attack them with literally any weapon, which makes your point clear and they run. The first and second games also got a remake announced recently.

Loved the video. This is my first video I've seen of yours and this is just fantastic content. You even showed me a RPG I've never heard of. Ring of Red. It's now on my list to hunt for when I'm at Con's or hunting in used video game stores. Ring of Red really reminded me of a cross of Front Mission and Valkyrie Chronicles. Which is an absolute win for me!
Question though. I see you hit almost all of the Suikoden series but the 3rd one. Had you not played that one yet?

People go one about sephiroth as being a big bad, but luca blight is one boss that's truly evil and takes multiple consecutive encounters to kill...
Fucker needed to be ambushed, shot repeatedly, beaten by squads of hero's, betrayed, shot again, and then dueled one on one... he was a real one man army, if he was not betrayed I am certain he would have just cut his way out and been the end game boss, and he goes out the same way he lived, madly laughing.

one thing I appreciate about Suikoden 1 and 2 at least is that it's not a end of history story. Most JRPGs have you killing god or trying to prevent the destruction of the very planet, which make it hard to see the upside from the antagonist perspective. Suikodens just feels like one countries story or legend in a much longer history. Like if Jory had won he would of formed some Roman empire like state but there would of been of world it just would of been more violent and oppressive than Rious. and probably had alot more Pilikas.

Hi Avalanche, you may have explained and I just didn't understand but I was wondering how you scale up your GBA games to 1080p. Do you just use the Retrotink's scaling or is it something else? I'm using a similar setup I think, Game Boy Player (just with the official disk) with component cables into the Retrotink 5x but I've never been able to get that good of a picture.
