7:44 WHAT? Dismemberment, enemies that fight each other instead of just you, environments you can actually interact with, AND visible combat wounds on enemies??? This 23 year old game is more advanced than probably every game from the last 5 years. Thanks for putting me onto this and Titan Quest, man. I’d never know about these games otherwise. Edit: Bro also picked up an arrow he’d fired. I think I’ve seen that ONE other time ever in a game. Skyrim, if I remember right. Incredible
I’ve been playing Jedi survivor and it feels so fucking wrong that the lightsaber will slice a robot in half but never dismembers any organic enemy in any way. They just fall over like you hit them with a baseball bat and not a thing that slices through metal like butter.
As I am spanish, it is always so good to hear non-spanish people talking good about this game... For me it is the best game we have ever created, though Commandos is the most famous and another masterpiece. I have completed this game over 20 times, all of them extremely entertaining and rewarding. The best character for me Zoey, and the worst the knight (mostly bc paladins and the like are always boring for me). She is a killing machine that can be absolutely untouchable by the enemies. I do agree Blade it is a precursor of Souls like and it also had incredible light and shadows effects for the time. I am astonished you have talked about how much you can cut your enemies, but not mention the idea of grabing their arms and use them as weapons xD. Another thing I have to tell you, is that every character goes through every single stage aside from the initial one that is unique to them. And there is a last secret stage only accesible if you find all the runes
Spain has such a vivid gaming culture: PC games, board games, pen&paper RPGs, I could name games in every category. Severance is widely known and loved here, even today. Greetings from germany.
@FalkFlak So good to learn It is well known in Germany! This is a Game we can be proud of. What a pity It didnt make well, as the little hints they made for a second game were amazing. They said they wanted to make kind of a Diablo 2 but played like Blade
I LOVED playing Sargon (the knight). Like you, I have finished this game about 20 times too and only one of them was with Zoe. I think she moves too quickly, is too OP, and the combat system therefore doesn't flourish. The knight is all about the good balance between defense and offense. Tukaram the barbarian is about offense and Naglfar the dwarf is about defense. I loved playing Naglfar too, because in the end I believe he is the strongest. If he gets a hit in with his short arms, the enemy explodes into pieces. Severance is my #1 game of all times. I wish all devs from RebelAct the best, especially Juan Diaz Bustamante. I'm even in the credits: "Vinnie the Great", as I was on their forum for months/years before release anticipating this game ❤❤❤
The Barbarian is my favourite as he fits the atmosphere the best, imho and has the most bad-ass moves. I also find Zoe kinda boring as you can only do so much with a spear. It's worth to mention Severance had exceptional water graphics effects that were years ahead of it's time. It's hard to grasp today if one weren't there at release. They could have done so much with a Severance 2. Just found out RebelAct went on to become MercurySteam who worked on Metroid Dread and Samus Returns. Both Games I own without knowing and they also are exceptional. Seems talent and creativity comes up on top at the end.
The last time you talked about this game, something reminded me of it. And now I finally remembered. It must have been sometime in that 2001-2003 period , we were mainly playing & yapping about Gothic and Morrowind and a buddy was telling us about SOME rpg he saw somewhere at someone's place. Supposedly there you could chop off limbs based on exactly where you hit ... like realistic combat system...completely in 3D. Yeah, of course nobody believed him.
While I played this back in the day and it was most likely this game. There was also "Rune" and "Crusaders of might and magic". Both games also had similar type gameplay and look
@@NinesIng Yes, in both cases quite an underwhelming experience, imho (even considering the time). Especially so Crusaders after the masterful Might and Magic VI. But I guess that's just some subjective bias of mine over a certain expectations from a full-scale RPG. Honestly, even though I've never played this Severance, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it much anyway.
He didn't even mention you can do critical attacks depending on where you hit, that's why you can insta-kill some guys with a single head cut or you can cancel animations to do the finisher attack faster. The game was way ahead of his time.
@@Diegoshadow85 It looks more like a feature because you actually use the stamina of the animation you cancel, even if it is a finisher which means it could be intented for not exploiting this feature. Animation lock + rooting with being lock onto target is what makes it commiting. Adds elements to combat like punishing frames, distancing and dodging.

Played all 4 chars but definetly the amazon was something else, besides her speed, her reach and easy multy-hit combos destroyed the enemies and her attacks go through walls lol; all 4 chars have diferent phisical habilities; Barbarian deals lots of damage and good reach, knight good defense, mid damage and mid reach, dwarf no reach at all, but insane damage and good defense, and amazon was amazing but no defenese at all lol; such good memories from this game, all for goblins to whirlwind hit you and turns you to chopped meat. Thanks for the revew.
I bought this for around $2 and it was truly a special experience. It required me to rethink how I play hardcore action rpgs. I thought it held up way better than I thought it would, while still showing its age in spots. 100% recommend it for its excellent atmosphere.
This game has been slowly becoming more popular the last few years, especially after the recent rereleases and stuff. I hope devs return to this game for a potential remake or something
I loved how your potion bottle could get knocked out of your hands if you drank at the wrong time. Not only do you not get a heal, but you loose the potion. Souls games should add that.
And the enemies that have health potions can use them to heal themselves during combat, unless to hit them at mid animation making the potions to drop on the floor.
I'm surprised he didn't mention any of this, or how you could pick up limbs and beat or throw enemies to death with them 😂 yes, you could pick up anything in this game, then hold the throw button for extra weight and release it for a devestating throw.
I remember buying this from the second hand games shop i worked at in the early 2000's. It remninded me of Deathtrap Dungeon in that the vast majority of the difficulty comes from dealing with the controls.
Awesome! Now... DO HERETIC 2 NEXT. YOU HAVE TO. THE UNIVERSE YEARNS YOU DO IT Seriously now, to this day is one of my favorite games and such a freaking big underrated gem and its very much in the ballpark of Severance, almost the same age (its from 98), graphics style, a lot of the vibes and quite advanced and a bit brutal in its own way. The game have a quite unique and refreshing combat compared to modern games, closer to old star wars games (wich were inspired by heretic 2, same devs, but i like Heretic 2 better)... you aim almost like a shooter but its melee, bu then it have 8 directional acrobatics/parkour that feed/mesh greatly with the melee, light combos, all sorts of tricks, unique world setting and enemies, and insanely fun magical weapons and spells. A pro player could dodge, jump over, backflip or wall jump over a couple of enemies while slashing half and shooting with magic the other half. In many sense it was 'a bit' of a souls before souls series- no lvl or stats, no stamina or bonfires, but labiritian huge metroidvania levels and since enemies positions were fixed and it could be quite hard you start learning from dying and later ninjaing encounters. Heck now that i think about it theres even 2-3 whole chapters where for story reasons the hero becomes almost like a souls character without humanity until he can heal himself. Fgs one of the spells throws a spike ball bouncing ahead that grows in size with each bounce to a medium freaking boulder and you can cast repeateadly. Or a bow where every freaking arrow makes rain blood and and lightining in an area. That #$% would be like expensive mana spell to a mage class in some run of the mill fantasy game, in Heretic thats every shot of the blood bow. Buff magician Corvus could probably eat most buff protagonists in his breakfast while feeling sad and in dispair for doing it (its his thing, dying world dark fantasy)- while covered in bloody wounds and the blood of his enemies. Oh and theres inidividual limbs dismemberement system. And it features the most original elf ever- a BUFFED and UGLY elf. NO ONE EVER DID THAT- but Heretic 2, inovating in breaking with fantasy steriotypes back in 1998 AND ITS FREE NOW- sadly- because its abandonware. Just look it up on google and youtube. To me personally theres no bigger hiddem gem then Heretic 2. Have you already visited the chuch of Heretic 2? You should give it a try. We dont promise an afterlife, but we promise dying having played Heretic 2 is better then never experiecing it. Pray be Raven (of old), and my god shine on its founder souls for someday an Heretic 3... Anyway, TLDR: id recommend Heretic 2
Fun title, that reminds me of much older game, called 'Die by the sword', that also had body dismemberment features. Also using Zoe with a chair in the neck as profile picture after days of testing this title on the Nintendo Switch. Good times. Good video.
I used to play it with my two brothers when I was a kid (we'd take turns) and the game was awesome although the vampire was HARD... Nowadays there are some awesome mods that make the game even better. Definitely a game worth checking.
I panicked through it as a kid when it came out, then years later after beating the Souls series and Bloodborne I remembered it again and had tons of fun with it! Challenging game for sure but worth a try!
My brother and I played it multiple times way back when there were no guides, or games taking a lifetime to complete. I played the dwarf, which is a shame you didn't at least show off a bit. He has a totally different play style as you need to be more defensive with the shield.
Loved that game. There was a multiplayer mod for it, too, which we would use to play it at lan parties back then. There was a small selection of community-made mp deathmatch maps.
13:20 i think you meant illusory walls or breakable walls) cause you still see them, just they may be an illusion or a destructible obstacle. I wouldn't be happy about finding a lot of invisible walls in the game)
Blade of darkness is such an incredible game. Playing that back in the was mindblowing. I remember I had to take certain fights over a few times until I got it. I played as the amazon. Whats cool is when she isnt using a bladed staff it doesnt cut the limbs off of meaty dudes but it still does it with the skeletons. The platforming in that game was annoying and honestly even elden ring is tough when you arent on the horse. There is just something about this style of game that doesnt translate to parkor.
I played this back when it came out (it was called Severance: Blade of Darkness then though). I thought it was an awesome game then. And thanks to the updated port you can get today, it's still as awesome today as it was in 2001.
There are plenty of older games that had something, that few new games do. Blood will always be one of my favourites, but I never see anything about in on youtube.
Adding to the comment on the dismemberment. It lets you kill enemies that still have plenty of life if you can hit them in the right spot at the right time.
When I heard the game that was purchasable on Modern consoles I bought it right away on my Xbox. I would definitely love for this game to be remade. And I wish there was an option to turn off the stamina.
Great game! Blade of Darkness an Return to castle Wolfenstein were first games, which I played on newly bought PC. It took some time, how to figure out proper combat strategy, it took many saves too😅! It's very satisfying game, beat it at least four times. I saw in Dark Souls games similar quality, but dark souls requires some grinding, so character can be effective in combat. Lords of the Fallen- that game is similar too.😊
I did! He retaliates immediately though. He's very easy to kill actually, with just a couple of special weapon attacks. Got me a few times in the beginning with the teleport bullshit.
@@TheFailureIsYours Yep, it's one of the easiest bosses to deal with. Meskalamdug gave me usually the most problems, because he's kinda large and has good range, but I usually just out-dps'd him. And the true ending is just all about finding the 6 keystones and beating the Abyss level and killing the Lord of Darkness. Edit: also, the fully charged Sword of Ianna just eviscerates bosses with it's special attacks
I swear i had some bootleg dvd with this game and there was something wrong with it - i could only open combat tips menu, with combos and stuff, just once and it wouldnt let me do it ever again.
I did, had to go to a LAN club to try it out. As someone ancient enogh to withness this game's release, my take is that it was just too hardware demanding. Back then it wasnt the issue of "low FPS" it was more about would it even run or not. I had like one pal with a PC capable of it and by the time we managed to whine new rigs out of our parents pockets it rained cool games like Deus Ex, Morrowing, Gothic etc. The 2001-02 bracket was just that packed with great games and hardware was evolving like crazy so keeping up was a real issue. Any plans for Drakan diology? I have some fond memories of it, but few people seem to even know of those games.
Tried a demo a long while ago. It always looked pretty cool, but back then Soulsbournes didn't exist, so the context was very different. Couldn't do much with it back then.
Ι have this game and have finished with all 4 characters several times. It's a pity you did not play with the knight, as he is the most technical of them all , with the most combos and advancement. The Amazon is the fastest but has the least health, but she has like 3 combos max, the dwarf has the most health and is fairly tough but is slow as hell and his moves are incredibly basic and the barbarian as you mentioned, is kinda slow, but he has the second best health in the game and also the highest damage potential.
If you want to try another game with PEAK melee combat and decapitation I'd recommend Nioh 2. It's the game with the best melee combat I've personally ever played.
Please play shadow tower abyss it’s made by fromsoft on the ps2 if you can play that game I truly believe you’ll fall in love with it I’m playing it right now and it’s so much fun
Awesome game, I was looking for something like this very long... I hope it gets a lots of mod, now. Have you played a game named Drakensang, Im goin to look at your videos if you had.
Looking at the combat and dismemberment mechanics of this and all I'm wondering why didn't we get a Star Wars game like this. Edit: I know we have the Jedi Knight games, but what if we had a combination of the two?
I played demo of BoD, the game was making huge impression back then (dynamic shadows, physics). But combat, except some ideas (progression system, unlockable combat moves and combos) had a lot to desire comparing to Rune. Without joystick or pad, it was hard to perform more than some basic moves. I remember this "dodge attack", merely few attemps succeded on keyboard. Must check it out since I have joystick now. Combat was a lot dynamic, fluid in Rune. Too bad without rpg elements like this one had.
Played this for the first time a couple years ago. I think some of the "ancestor of soulslikes" marketing of the re-release was a little misleading, but its a fun game nonetheless. It feels more like an action-ified Gothic than Dark Souls to me. Playing on M+K is far better than controller, IMO.
Yeah baby!!! The combat mechanics are just the best! I really thought this was the way fantasy games would go - but, sigh, they didn't. Then WoW came out and I knew we were doomed. We had twitch combat in fantasy and we replaced it with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 1, 3, 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 combat mechanics. Thank god for the Soul's games picking up the twitch fantasy mantle again! All's well that ends well.

Seriously now, to this day is one of my favorite games and such a freaking big underrated gem and its very much in the ballpark of Severance, almost the same age (its from 98), graphics style, a lot of the vibes and quite advanced and a bit brutal in its own way.
NO ONE EVER DID THAT- but Heretic 2, inovating in breaking with fantasy steriotypes back in 1998
AND ITS FREE NOW- sadly- because its abandonware.
Good times. Good video.
I loved watching my brothers playing this when I was kid ;D
I still have huge positive sentiment towards this game.
Babe come quick, C4G just put out a new video 😮🎉
Giga-Chad: the game.
I recommend installing the gorenity mod to the vanilla version that comes with the re release it makes the combat even more satisfying.
I amazes me people can remember playing such old games , I remember severance the name but nothing else
My brother and I played it multiple times way back when there were no guides, or games taking a lifetime to complete.
I played the dwarf, which is a shame you didn't at least show off a bit. He has a totally different play style as you need to be more defensive with the shield.
Sjajna igrica ,bravo
2002's Enclave is like a more refined version of this game. Recommended.
Loved that game. There was a multiplayer mod for it, too, which we would use to play it at lan parties back then. There was a small selection of community-made mp deathmatch maps.
Naglfar is hardest to play as but has best defense and HP, recommend to try him out. 👍
Thanksgiving week break over, I'm back in Kansas. I look on the yt an see a video dropped by my bro, C4G! Hell to the yeah
One of my prefered games, the combat is just so fun, even when the history is nearly inexistent.
How is it so much like Gothic? The style, the graphics, the weapons, down to the in-game font
I remember playing this when it came out and it was brutal still managed to complete the game played the Knight class.
this game was more souls than any other souls game 10 years before any souls game even came out
Lords of the Fallen- that game is similar too.😊
One of my favourite games of all time.
I loved this game when it first came out in the U.S., but was so disappointed to learn there would not be a sequel. 🙁
For the vampire boss, use the backslash to punish.
Each character has it.
Edit: also, did you get the true ending?
I did! He retaliates immediately though. He's very easy to kill actually, with just a couple of special weapon attacks. Got me a few times in the beginning with the teleport bullshit.
when he starts teleporting all you do is backslash and if you time it right he won't even touch you - he'll get staggered and will teleport again
Another classic! Now make a dedicated video for Nox 😃
I played this back in the day.
I swear i had some bootleg dvd with this game and there was something wrong with it - i could only open combat tips menu, with combos and stuff, just once and it wouldnt let me do it ever again.
Dying Light 1-2 and Dead Island 2 have great mutilation systems. Especially Dead Island 2.
I got the GOG version for free from prime a while back, time to play it 👍
Oh dear, I get lost in Skyrim dungeons. This game would probably drive me crazy
I can confirm it definitely will, lol. Still though it's a very good level design.
Tried a demo a long while ago. It always looked pretty cool, but back then Soulsbournes didn't exist, so the context was very different. Couldn't do much with it back then.
Neighbor had this when it came out. Was an absolute system hog at the time.
You should play Rune , it is one of best games ever made (IMHO) and does what Blade of Darkness tries far better, with super satisfying gameplay
ohh man ohh man I love blade of darkness.
Ι have this game and have finished with all 4 characters several times. It's a pity you did not play with the knight, as he is the most technical of them all , with the most combos and advancement. The Amazon is the fastest but has the least health, but she has like 3 combos max, the dwarf has the most health and is fairly tough but is slow as hell and his moves are incredibly basic and the barbarian as you mentioned, is kinda slow, but he has the second best health in the game and also the highest damage potential.
difficulty settings are basically characters dwarf being easy, knight normal...
Wrong. Zoe/Amazon: Easy. Sargon/Knight: Normal. Tukaram/Barbarian: Hard. Naglfar/Dwarf: Extreme.
@@Vince01
I retract my statement. It's subjective, my friend (very bad gamer) managed to finish the game only with the barbarian
@@ghoulash204 True! Subjective indeed. Man... I wanna start this game up again now.
Kickass and Metal AF. I wouldn't mind if FromSoft stole some things from Blade of Darkness.
If you want to try another game with PEAK melee combat and decapitation I'd recommend Nioh 2. It's the game with the best melee combat I've personally ever played.
16:10 Xardas, is that you??? Also this game looks very similar to the first two Gothic games, is it made in a same game engine or something?
6:14 - Warhammer: Vermintide 2, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, Mordhau
One of the Dark Souls before Dark Souls.
I still like to play this game
It reminds me of if there was a proper Conan game
Love this game, i have It on switch and its a masterpiece.
Reminds me of Cult of the Wyrm
I played demo of BoD, the game was making huge impression back then (dynamic shadows, physics).
But combat, except some ideas (progression system, unlockable combat moves and combos) had a lot to desire comparing to Rune.
Without joystick or pad, it was hard to perform more than some basic moves.
I remember this "dodge attack", merely few attemps succeded on keyboard.
Must check it out since I have joystick now.
Combat was a lot dynamic, fluid in Rune. Too bad without rpg elements like this one had.
Screen of Darkness - its so dark I can't see anything.
This guy stole Guts' sword and fled into another fantasy setting, going 'berserk' on its inhabitants!
*I can do this all day!!* 💪
Do you play any JRPGs?
Reminds me of Deathtrap Dungeon por ps1 and pc
Played this for the first time a couple years ago. I think some of the "ancestor of soulslikes" marketing of the re-release was a little misleading, but its a fun game nonetheless. It feels more like an action-ified Gothic than Dark Souls to me. Playing on M+K is far better than controller, IMO.
Says the barbarian is 225cm tall on the stat sheet. That's like 7'4 lol
That's funny because he looks like he's 160cm at most in the game, lmao.
Combat looks like gothic
It’s three dollars in my eshop, im about to get it, rpg lovers.
Nice.
Man if some guys couldn't end the game playing with the amazon then that's really a case to tell those guys: Git gud
