    I picked up Days Gone randomly one day, I was like "why not". The biggest surprise I ever had. It has a deep, sweeping story that had me committed the whole time. It nailed that "getting by in the apocalypse" vibe that's so hard to pin down. Everyone is trying to revive the past either to fight the present threats or find meaning. The dialogue works too, really well. The man who wrote it actually wrote the Syphon Filter series too so no wonder. There's this pervasive sense of forlorn hope in everything and it's such a sweet tone. The game design is also relevant and very approachable, taking down your first horde - can't beat that feeling.

    • @ClayMann
      @ClayMann 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      very well said. Not being a console owner I missed it when it came out and only picked it up recently because it was so cheap it had to be worth a shot. All I knew was people had issues with it so I expected to bounce off. I did not, I loved it. That getting by in the apocalypse line really hits the nail on the head. That's what this game has so much of. I'd have to put it in a top 10 best games I've ever played list.

      i had a very similar experience of getting bc "why not?" but i completely agree with Falcon about how it left a really generic first impression--imo the story doesn't get at all interesting until you go with Schizo into Ripper territory, and eventually meet with the Deshutes County Militia, the problem was by then, i was burnt out on hours of busy work, incomplete mechanics and dropped plotlines. for example, Lisa's missions amount to finding her, finding her a rock, and then finding her 20-30 hours later with the Rippers, and AFAIK, she's dropped entirely after that. i can conceed that maybe the ending makes it all worth it bc i have yet to beat it, and it is absolutely a fun game mostly.

    Days Gone surprised me in the best way possible. I had never heard from that game, but I regularly scour steam for zombie games hoping to find one - preferably an RPG game. I suddenly found this through that search and was pleasantly surprised. This is exactly the kind of game I've always wanted. An openworld zombie game with some survival elements. Loved it. It could have been even better with more random openworld events and more survival elements, but I still had an absolute blast with it.

      @Thedownliner2015 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

      Yep I remember that the first time I took a walk with the camp leader to the hills and saw the hoard. I think it was a good idea not to have them as the selling point as they were a surprise to anyone thinking the game was pretty easy and then seeing that lol. Obviously the real reason Days Gone got bad reviews is because it didn't tick any boxes. Plus it was being released when the Zombie genre was saturated.

      I LOVED Days Gone but the story was finished and I see no reason at all for a sequel. What would the story be in a sequel? A continuation of the original characters? Or a brand new MC with some kind of new, epic goal? How do you think it would match up to the original? I'm truly interested because honestly, sell me on a story that's at least as compelling and deep as the original and I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
      Oh, and the bulk of it can't take place in the existing world/region, because well, where's the massive zombie threat anymore. It would have to take place in a different part of the country, which I'm totally down with, but it would have to be as detailed and geographically interesting and diverse as the existing one.

      @@scorpiongod101 That sounds great, but it doesn't sound like a main story goal. I think the main goal would have to be about NERO. I won't go into details about it here, for fear of spoiling anything about NERO for those who haven't played it yet. Also, the greatest thing about Days Gone was the feels. A sequel would definitely need the feels, and it couldn't involve the you-know-who's because that would just be lame because they've already been through it once. IMHO it would either need a brand new MC with an equally compelling story(which would possibly still be a re-hash and thus still lame), OR the existing MC who now helps others suffering with the same issue that he himself had. I could easily get into ~that~, as long as we really feel for those he's helping, with their issues being deeply dove into and expressed to us.

    I'm currently doing a 2nd playthrough of Days Gone. As much as I love the story/gameplay/the bike mechanics and the world. I'm seeing now that it is really underbaked. There's so much in this world that is left to be desired.
    I went into Copeland's camp a few nights ago and instead of going to see Manny or speak to Copeland for a quest I started wondering around the camp. I was in awe of how detailed the camp was. It genuinely looked like a survivor's camp that was built around a big tree.... and then I got to the guard posts. There were multiple of them. On different levels of elevation and they seemed to be in the perfect spots for taking out enemies. Yet, you don't use them. They're just there. Imagine a mission where a horde was coming down onto a camp and you along with NPCs were tasked with culling them, while you fire from the guard posts.
    And that's basically the entire world of Days gone. It is so detailed, but under utilised, and as a result it loses out on moments you could've had in game, especially because the world can be dynamic. Every building allows you to enter it. Imagine finding a small family hiding out in one of the buildings while a bunch of raiders or freakers were outside it. While trying to complete that a horde could've been in the area and came hunting for you. It would've made exploration so much more captivating more so than just finding resources. It could have even evolved into you needed to escort this family home again. It would've given more depth to making the roads safer by clearing out freaker nests, other than just opening it up for fast travel.
    I fault nothing else of the game. I love the shooting mechanics even though a bunch of people complained about it. I love the bike and how conservate you need to be (even though people complained that the bike got damaged and ran out of petrol too fast), I love how it's like a ubisoft map but not exactly. I love how small and detailed the map is. I started traversing it without using a GPS when I needed to go somewhere. AND THE HORDES, my god. They're amazing.
    My wish was that we got a part 2 that kept this same map, they didn't even need to update the graphics. That could've been carried over to the PS5 flawlessly. I just wanted them to flesh out the world a bit more. Make it fuller than it ended up being in the game we got.
    Thanks for coming to my TED talk :)

    • @Teodor-u5k
      @Teodor-u5k 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      With a map of this size, you're talking about an RDR2 (or Witcher 3) level of quality and many 'accidental' encounters which are not marked on your map, but note that Bend Studio is a much smaller developer compared to CDPR, let alone Rockstar, with a much smaller budget, and inifinitely smaller experience and skillset. The fact that they were able to pull this off, i.e. make a game of this magnitude, so that we can all enjoy this great product (granted, after many improvements and patches), is absolutely amazing and Bend Studio couldn't have done it any better under the circumstances - when it comes to game design and gameplay. They did an amazing job and many people praise them to this day. The main problem was the initial bugs, which is why many people didn't pay the full price, together with the fact that this game was burried by pretentious fucks who consider themselves experts.

    • @cameronfell4415
      @cameronfell4415 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Teodor-u5k I hear you but they definitely could've done more with the world. The encounters didn't even have to be completely "random". It could have been scripted moments when you stumble onto a house or that big ass Barn area. I LOVE days gone for what it is. But you can't deny that a lot of what's in the game is underutilized.
      The Days Gone Map is also magnitudes smaller that The Witcher 3s or RDR2 and I don't believe Bend had a small budget. If you listen to Sam Witwer talk about the production of the game while he was shooting. He always speaks about how the processes of making the game were different to anything he's done before because they had Sony's baking.
      We'll never know what happened with the development but I think there was a lot of corners cut to get the game out the door.

    Days gone is one of the few games I've played 5 times and still go back. One of the few games these days with a story that makes you wanna play till 5am.

    I wish the people that made days gone see how many people love their game it was incredible I loved it from the beginning to the end then I was disappointed when they said they're not going to make another one 😢

      The developers know how much people love the game.
      The problem is the suits at Sony, who have no clue about gaming. They forced Bend Studios to start working on some dumb live service crap instead of a sequel, even though the first game sold pretty well for an original ip.

    Lotta love for Days Gone in the comment section (and rightly so)
    But my heart belongs to Titanfall 2. Like Days Gone, this one was sorely underrated

      Agreed titanfall 2's story was so well done and perfect length. The. Multiplayer was way ahead of its time. Wish they would make a 3 but atleast people still come back and play. Great franchise

    It's actually possible to play most of the Last Guardian in 60 fps on PS5, but you need the disc version.
    There's a few sticking points where you need to update to the 30 fps version to avoid crashes so it's not the smoothest experience but I found it much more playable at 60 fps.

    Days Gone is one of my favorite games. I saw it as a trailer a couple of years before it released and waited to play it on launch. Pre-ordered it as well. Got the platinum trophy on Playstation for it. Awesome game.

    Praying for Days Gone 2

    I honestly can’t believe Sony chose not to do a days gone 2 honestly so stupid it could have improved on so much and it’s already one of the best zombie games ever imo up with left 4 dead I actually ended up getting it for my pc not too long ago and the audio is like messed up or something cutscenes are like lagging behind the audio it’s weird

    Quantum Break is by far underrated. Its really fun. You can essentially watch the live action cutscenes as a standalone. It was one of the first games I got for the xbox. Absolutely loved it.

    I'd love it if Bend Studios made a Director's Cut version of Days Gone, porting it to UE5 with visual enhancements and including back a ton of the cut content they had to chop away at.

      Sadly, Sony has the developers working on a dumb live service game because the suits that run the gaming division have no clue about gaming or what gamers want.

    Days Gone is underrated it’s almost criminal. The critics really hit that one wrong (something we’re seeing again with Rise of the Ronin) and I think only reviewed it based off of the first 5-ish hours.
