  • I have seen hell and it's full of very expensive bullets.
Famidaily is my attempt to catalog all of the commercially released Famicom games.

the fact that nobody cleared the game in the finals for the tournament is more than enough to really demonstrate how difficult Recca is
anyways I hope this gets rereleased on Switch via NSO that would be great

Damn its banger upon banger in 1992 besides the short LJN/Pachinko interlude.

Somehow, this made it to 3DS VC. Recca for Switch Online? If we got Davia Story, I'd be pleasantly surprised but not shocked.

It'd also make the game a bit easier to play due to having an actual screen

Man, I adore Recca's techno BGM! As for the game itself, I managed to beat the first boss and that's it 😅

I bought a CIB copy of Recca in 2004 when it was wayyyyy cheaper (I still have it :) ). If you want to buy it now be aware that there are a LOT of bootlegs floating around due to the high demand. And the bootlegs are with box, manual and cart = the bootlegs look VERY close to the original. Also the high price comes from the fact that Recca was the first Shoot'em up developed by Shinobu Yagawa = he later went on to develop games like Battle Garegga, Ibara, Armed Police Batrider or Battle Bakraid = most of those games are regarded as some of the best Shoot'em ups ever.

This is easily my favorite japan-exclusive famicom game. I had heard about it and decided to buy it on the 3ds virtual console - it was one of the only shmups I had ever played, and despite being thrashed over and over, i was HOOKED. I also fell in love with the soundtrack, it was nothing like I had ever heard before on the NES.

This is one of my favourites because they decided to go all out on the presentation as well as throwing as many sprites on to the screen as they could. As far as Famicom shooters go, I'd say that Gun-Nac might be better for being more accessible difficulty-wise but that's about it.

Recca is one of my favorite Famicom games, and it was my gateway into shmups! It's really a masterpiece. Regarding the difficulty, I'd say it's tough but fair. I was able to beat the game after some practice. Using the unlimited lives code is a good way to start out, and anyone can have fun with the game that way. I also want to mention that there's a hack available that removes the full screen flashing after beating a boss. That makes the game easier on the eyes, even though there's still a lot of flickering.

This was absolutely my addiction back in the day on 3DS VC, and I even made a retrospective vid on that version a while back: definitely a nostalgic buy and I was super happy to see it released on that, and I made many high score attempts over the years. I think the furthest I made it without cheats was stage 3 on quest 1, and that was after tons of practice. Quest 2 is outright an impossibility, IMO. Really hope Naxat manages to get this on NSO somehow

At the start of 1992, I remember saying we were going to get less games, but BETTER games. I said this would be one of the best years. It really has been so far. Recca is one of the top-tier games on the Famicom, and one of the best 8-bit shooters out there, pushing the absolute LIMIT of the now 4 year old MMC3 chip. More than just all the damn bullets on the screen at once, the shifting and undulating graphics are unlike anything we've seen except for maybe Cosmic Epsilon.

For some reason I always assumed that Japanese or overseas video game magazines were more credible and on the level than the US ones. But now, because of TH-cam and the internet, we are starting to see they aren't without occasional controversies either. I wish I was better with reading Japanese but Isabelle gave the highest score at a 6, which even at a 6 is questionable but the other three reviewer's low scores were insane for that. When you do the math you're telling me Recca scores lower than David Robinson's Supreme Court..which isn't a terrible game but it's def no where in the same league as Recca. The reassuring part for me overall is the fans stood up and called that crap out lol 😁

I personally think Famitsu were broadly correct: The game is essentially completely unplayable unless you're a hardcore shoot 'em up fan. If you're in that category, then the game is a unquestionably a 9 or a 10, but if you're not, you'll most likely play it once or twice before giving up. Remember that publications like Famitsu have to review the game for everybody, not just the top 1% of shoot 'em up nerds.

@@sjake8308 I feel you but just because a game is hard isn't reason enough to dock it down a few points because then by that logic should Ghouls 'n Ghosts get a lower score for difficulty when it deserves a 9 or 10 with how polished it is? While I'm not the most skilled at shooters and envy those that can while I die in the first few levels, I can still appreciate the work put into developing a solid game. 😀

Imagine this game made by one of those so called "legends" of gaming,it would be praised forever as one of the most impressive technical achievements of all time (and actually it is)...

Strangely, yesterday, I was wondering if you were going to cover this one. Kinda glad it briefly appeared on the 3DS eShop, but it still needs to be a little more accessible.

This one's probably my 2nd favorite Famicom exclusive. I was so wowed by it all when I first tried it. I really wish it came to Switch Online but it still hasn't happened sadly.

An incredible technical achievement, that's for sure... but I prefer playing Gun-Nac or Life Force. Still, it's definitely something unique amongst all the Famicom games.

I played this recently and it's a game I admire rather than like. This may be controversial, but I really think that making it so inaccessible to the casual player represents a failure in the game design and is a mistake for a commercial release. This game really needed an 'easy mode' to ease players in and there's not really a good reason not to include one. I actually don't know whether I think it's a good game or not (maybe I'll give it another shot and warm to it), but I do feel comfortable stating that great games don't exclude most of the playerbase.
