My favorite Famicom game period and I will never own a physical cartridge copy in my life

I just remembered something. There's a rerelease called something like Gimmick: Special Edition coming to Switch, PS4, PC, XB1 somewhere in 2023. This rerelease looks to be based on the 8-bit original so you might be better served to wait for that to come out if you want to play it without emulating the game.

I've always wanted to get into this one, but was always discouraged by the controls (I struggle with using the weapon) and the requirements for the good ending. I am anticipating the special edition release since I think the QOL additions will make it a lot more palatable and the soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission for that release 🙂

What is there left to say about Gimmick! which hasn't already been said? The Sunsoft 5 chip is put to good use here, as is the 3 megabits of space. While the music is nice, what I am really in awe of is the graphics. The brightest and most colorful the Famicom has ever had to offer. At times you'll swear there's more than 16 colors on the screen, but it's just so cleverly drawn with those pixels. Sunsoft was well known for that kind of magic. This is a game I definitely want, but I know I can never get. It will always be just out of my reach.

@@ChenEpicGray I'm a Famicom collector. I can (and have) already play it via Everdrive. I just WANT it, ya know?

And the enemies AI are all different and interesting. The cat like creature that really likes your star, or the big white guy who is friendly until you hit his bird friends. It's something else, you don't see this often in these old games.
They really made good use of the limited color palette of the Famicom for sure. Another game that's overlooked where the devs did magic with so few colors is Rockman 6. They both made good use of some very bright colors.

Most stellar music on the Famicom and it's not even close. Also one of the best 2D action games of the 90s, up there with Gunstar Heroes and the Donkey Kong Country games

    1:43 he is a Yokai.
Also he isn’t a plushie; he was mistook as one by the girls father while yumetaro was shopping.

Gimmick is a very good game but it did not get the credit that it deserves. It would be great for Yumetaro to be in Smash Bros but the biggest reason is because it wasn’t released in North America (which is because Sunsoft of America did not approve of it due to its quirkiness.) People like Kirby more because in Kirby you can do so much more than in Gimmick. Let me explain this in detail.
    1. The title. Kirby’s titles is Kirby’s adventure, Kirby’s dreamland, Kirby’s Pinball, etc, but for Gimmick, it’s just Gimmick or Mr. Gimmick. That’s it.
    2. The locations. Kirby is set in dreamland or Planet Popstar. The game is set in various locations such as Vegetable Valley, Orange Ocean. Ice cream island etc, but Gimmick is set just in a toy realm.
    3. The enemies. In Kirby, the enemies all vary and they have powers that Kirby can suck up to use against other enemies. In Gimmick you can’t do that. All you have is a star and the star can be pretty hard to manage.
    4. The bosses. The bosses of Kirby are very excellent such as Meta Knight, King Dedede etc, but in Gimmick the bosses are just huge versions of the toys.
    5. The storyline. The plot and storyline of Kirby is exciting such as saving dreamland from evil and other things but in Gimmick all you have to do is a save a girl trapped in the toy realm just like Mario saving Peach.
    6. Marketing. Sunsoft didn’t make a commercial featuring this game to spread awareness about it which is another reason why it didn’t generate that much sales.
I’m not saying this to affect you and anyone else but I’m just saying the reasons why Gimmick is not as popular as the other games and why Yumetaro is not in Smash Bros. Thank you.

There was a time in a 90's history of Taiwan, where pirates released a HUGE batch of this game under the "Suikan Pipe" name with pirated mapper lacking extra yamaha sounds... but unfortunately they failed with copy protection and game was unable to be finished because of the "Black Hole" appearing near the end of the game 😂

I did fire this up at one point in an emulator, it was quite something! I did hear in recent years they came back to start bringing back their old catalog again, gimmick included! it's on my switch wishlist and will have to pick it up at some point!

You could get this one here in Europe, but it was 'rare'... I like it, but it's honestly my least favourite of the 3 games from that day (January 31). It's an 'incredible' game for speedrunners, but you really need to get used to the physics. Great presentation and all, but somehow it never really gelled with me as much as I thought it would. Still, the idea is quite unique for the Famicom, but IMO the learning curve is somewhat steep for a casual player. I find Bucky O'Hare to be easier, despite being a much longer game.

disregarding the NTSC vs PAL differences, the Scandinavian NES release of Mr. Gimmick loses the expansion audio from the Famicom game so it's pretty clear which version you'd want to play between the two

I'm ambivalent to the arcade version of Gimmick because that version accentuates and focuses on the clearly underage girl's figure. It seems to be a recurring pattern with modern Sunsoft games unfortunately.

Trip World credits Gimmick's creator Tomomi Sakai as "HYPER ADVISER", so there may have been some direct inspiration, or it could just be a little nod.
