Thanks so much for checking out the video! A slightly shorter episode this time, but full of history nonetheless. What are your thoughts on Guarma? It seems to be the most divisive part of the main storyline, so I'd love to hear your thoughts. Special thanks to my supporters on Patreon who watched this video a couple weeks ago and shared their thoughts! While RDR2 is my favorite game of all time, and I love Chapter 5, Guarma is still my least favorite part of the game. This is due solely to the pacing. You are on the island for only a couple small missions, and then that’s it. I would have liked it to last another couple hours.
The beta history for Guarma/Guama is really interesting to look into, seems like it was planned to be a massive island that could be freely traveled to later in the story through steamboat.
You're so detailed. Arthur: walks* RealPixels: Walking was invented in the early years of human civilisation as a way of transport. I mean like, every step is so detailed and you cover them. Rockstar is just a detailing god. Your research is amazing too.
Fun fact the gatling gun was created by Richard Jordan gatling in 1861 at first he wanted to be a doctor but he moved on to be an inventor and he wrote that the reason why he invented the gatling was to reduce the size of armies, reduce the number of deaths by combat and disease and to show how futile the war was at the time, its crazy how someone turned from a doctor to an inventor that made one of the most dangerous weapons in u.s history
If I remember right his desire was for the Gatling-gun make war "too costly". While he didn't quite achieve his goal (see world Wars 1-2) humanity did ultimately achieve the "too costly" weapon with the Manhattan project and the future development of nuclear weapons. War between nuclear armed nations is truly too costly when a single bomb can destroy a city.
Yea I love red dead 2 really disappointing they put all this effort in to just not give a fuck about the online portion really disappointed like it's still not even as good as story lol
Real pixels be like: So you see Kieran in chapter 3 says “Hello” to Arthur. The first known usage of hello dates to 1342, so it’s not unrealistic for him to be saying this.
Arthur: “the-“ Real Pixels: “the first written instance of the word ‘the’ dates back to 1267, with the invention of the English language, so it is not unrealistic for Arthur to know this word’s meaning and be able to use it correctly.”

Super fun listening to all the history of these things and how historically accurate red dead redemption 2 seems to be. The reason they called the maxim gun a ''gatling gun'' is because they were not used to such automatic repeating firearms, most likely, and they probably are much more used to gatling guns and such. I would say thats why thy called it a gatling gun, because they believed it was, but being a bunch of outlaws, they're no military gun professionals.
That might explain why Sadie called it that, but the gold medal objectives listing as a gattling gun after calling it a maxim gun during the mission is clearly a mistake
@@ghostman7817 how does that make any sense? Why would they list the wrong thing intentionally in the achievements? Your argument doesn’t make sense, the achievements aren’t written from the gangs point of view so the fact they might not recognize the gun is irrelevant
@@bobarcher5837 I feel like they called it Gatling gun cuz that’s what Sadie called it. So as the player if you wanted to replay for gold, you clearly know what gun the game is referring to.
@@bobarcher5837 No see, the devs in the game files and realistically know it’s a Maxim Machinegun, but the gang would be using slang under a stressful situation like that. Think of how many people call any kind of handgun a “glock” because glock is synonymous with handgun in certain circles. My buddies who work at a gun store have gotten asked before if they have any “glock shells”
I’d like to point out that the warship seen in Hell hath no fury seems to be the CSS Virgina with what looks like a turret on the front. This is a very odd design and considering the fates of the CSS Virginia itself, USS Monitor (early civil war era ironclad with the first turret) and the HMS Captain this would be a very poor design that would likely capsize in anything but calm seas. It’s also worth pointing out that the ship would be extremely outdated by 1899 with Pre-Dreadnoughts, Armored Cruisers, and Torpedo boats all being far more modern. Having it be an ironclad was definitely an extremely weird choice by rockstar. I would’ve used an An Armored Cruiser instead
@@RandomRebelSoldier I doubt it. This takes place in 1899 and Cuba didn’t become independent until 1902 and even then it was pretty much just a US Puppet with no need for a navy. Rockstar clearly didn’t put much effort into research naval warfare at the turn of the century as it’s not really important in RDR2 and only the largest of naval history buffs (like me) will look into it at all

After your done covering all the chapters, I hope you do a video covering all the side missions and probably random events in the game, my favorite has to be the legendary gunslingers side mission.
We're approaching the end of the game and so the end of this series, i'm already a little sad to think about it. Such good videos ! Such an amazing chanel !
I never liked being on Guarma without any chance to come back later. It makes this whole chapter so...meaningless. I mean, yeah, we see a bit more of Dutch getting crazy (or Arthur realizing that he followed a maniac?) but that could also happen on the main map. Your video about it is great btw! 😁
Guarma was needed to show that Dutch's "Tahiti dream" is merely a dream. No places were left untamed, even islands were transformed into sugar plantations and had some sort of prosecution element within them. After that savage disaster, Arthur realizes how delusional Dutch is, how unhinged he is, what his true colours are. But what I can agree with, is that Guarma was lacking content, due to chunks of it being cut during development.
Yes absolutely Guarma needed to be longer, originally it had at least 3 more missions. They also cut out a cave you were supposed to do a mission in and another small area on the island. And Arthur was gonna fight sharks when he jumped into the ocean.
So glad to see you're still carrying the series on, I really hope you do it through to the epilogue and maybe even some online stuff.. Videos are so interesting and informative so thank you.
It's my least favorite chapter because it's SO linear. You're just locked into a set path of missions with very few options to do what you want. The open-world feel of the game in other chapters is by far my favorite aspect of it. But in Guarma you're just stuck following a specific path that seems to take forever to get through, and nothing really gets accomplished anyway as far as the gang/story/Arthur is concerned.
apart from the one scene in the cave, the whole chapter is completely unnecessary from a narrative perspective. Still at least it can teach us about America's relationship with Cuba.
@@fecesmuncher2448 To be fair, though, what he wanted was an "untouched" tropical paradise from civilization. Cuba's one of those tropical paradises that fell to civilization heavily. That's why Tahiti is the best option for the gang.

I still find it sad that Guarma had so much cut from it, stranger missions, a far larger explorable area, a pirate treasure hunt for god's sake. Guarma is a perfect example of wasted potential on rockstar's part, they still made it beautiful and majestic as anything else in RDR2, but it's still very unfortunate that so much of Guarma had to be scrapped.
A suggestion. After you get done with the epilogue, you could do a general video. Minor details and easter eggs and glance at them through the historical microscope? Thank you for the great content.
I comment this everytime but I’ve just gotta say that the research and work that goes into these videos are heavily appreciated and commendable. whenever you upload it’s the highlight of my day
What's interesting about the iron clad, is that iron clads of that design were well out of date, and an Era of pre-dreadnoughts andight cruisers such as USS Albany were considered modern standard in 1899. But these old iron clads were still puttering around as those that weren't scrapped by this point had been sold off to South America and were in service up to world War 1. And copies were produced after the war that were a little different. This specific ship has the superstructure of the CSS Virginia, but on its bow, it has a primitive turret like the USS Monitor, likely a compromise design, taking the structure strength but taking the flexibility of the turret structure.
This ironclad especially is out of date. Also looking at the fates of both the CSS Virginia and USS Monitor this ship certainly wouldn’t be a very stable one and would likely capsize and sink in anything but calm seas.
Well it was sent from Cuba. And I imagine the Cuban military was underfunded compared to the U.S. and other colonial states. But I'm also surprised that Bill is shooken by an ironclad, out of date no less. Maybe he hasn't seen much naval combat and stayed fighting natives.
This series is really cool after you review the main missions do you think you could review stranger missions or random events? I think that would be amazingly awesome.
RDR2 is great, imagine a GTA set in a a big map, you got all established city like San Fierro, Los Santos, Liberty City, Vice City, and state of North Yankton then you also have the 5 states: New Austin, West Elizabeth, New Hanover, Ambarino, Lemoyne. All we need now is the southeast region, the Appalachians, the great lakes region, the Rockies, and Pacific north!
Super informative and interesting video, I love this series. I was just watching the Cuba Libre Story on Netflix and Robert Redford's The West on History and Rockstar really knocked it out of the pack with the accuracy of all the details
Another terrific video that deepens and increases the joy of Red Dead Redemption 2! Love the details, the narration, the pleasant voice, all of it. Looking forward to the next one, as always.
God I love these videos, interested to see if you'll do the epilogue chapters too, would love to see it! Thank's for making these vids, they really make my favourite game of all time even better
beautiful videos man rdr2 easily my favorite game of all time. was just going through my 4th full play through when i hit chapter one video and been watching as i go through the game. been amazing keep it up.
missed opportunity to talk about the ship they travel on which is wreck, so far the closed match to the ship was in 1898 where a cargo steam loaded from Pennsylvania loaded with coal (not necessarily Pennsylvanian coal foundered in a storm in the Caribbean but i cannot remember the name.
There was a grainary explosion in my home town when I was a kid. All the dust from moving the corn through the elevator caught a spark and it blew like gunpowder.
I have visited Buxton, IA. The foundations of the bank and train station are still there but little else. You can see where the railroad came through and there is a good sized clearing. It is on private property so you need permission to visit. In the countryside near the town there are still many houses that were moved from the town and made into farmhouses that still stand today. There is a very well done 2 part documentary here on youtube about the history of the town if anyone is interested.
These videos continue to be awesome! I have on question. When you finished this series, could you combine all of these videos into one massive one so that someone could binge the entire series or just listen to it?
I enjoyed the video but the reference to the Ironclads is slightly incorrect. Whilst the first Ironclads fighting each other was in the American Civil War. The first use of an Ironclad was by the French in the Crimean War (1853-1856). Also, the use of Ironclads in the American Civil War wasn’t particularly impactful on naval warfare as most of the Great Powers had or were building Ironclads at the outbreak of the Civil War. This was because they had learnt the lesson of the Battle of Sinope at the beginning of the Crimean War where the steam-powered Russian Navy sank or forced to run aground all but one ship of the Ottoman Black Sea Fleet.
I don’t know what’s more impressive. R* putting so much detail in RDR2, or Real Pixels doing all the research and linking literature, items/objects and historic events that happened in real life to this game.
I have this game for 2 years, and i never saw the shrunken head in Lakay That's what happens if you don't investigate all the places and do the story missions instead so you'll miss small details like this heh 😅
I think the simpler and most likely explanation for Sadie referring to the Maxim as a Gatling Gun is that a Gatling Gun was originally going to be used in the scene, but was replaced with the Maxim for whatever reason after dialogue was recorded. Black Belle does the same thing in her stranger mission when the bounty hunters bring a wagon armed with one to the fight.
Man, Before finding out about your channel, I played the story like once, and did not want to replay it, then I came across your videos. IM ON MY 7TH RUN😍
The interesting thing about Annesburg is its closeness of the coal mine to the Lannahechee River, the reliance on the railroad, and the steep terrain in the surrounding area, including the mine location. There's actually an area of West Virginia that fits the bill quite nicely. Starting at Marmet (just east of Charleston) and running east along the banks of the Kanawha River are a few different coal mines that line the hillside above the river. A good modern day pick would be the coal mine located across the river from Montgomery, where coal is actively loaded onto train cars and coal barges. However, turn the clock back 120 years, and anyone of these towns could have had similar structures built on the rail yards. All these town share a few similarities with Annesburg: -A large coal mine that is the sole source of jobs in the town -Situated on river that gives navigational access to the mouth of a river near St. Denis/New Orleans -Steep mountainous terrain on the shores of the river -Access to a major railroad that made coal a major part of their freight traffic (IRL: the former C&O, now CSX) That's just my experience from actually living in the area for a couple of years.
I find Red Dead interesting in that it has fictional states and towns/cities like GTA, but also refers in name to real world places as well. Like Cuba, Tahiti and New York. Just seems an odd mix of the two worlds despite quite a few Easter eggs suggesting both franchises are set in the same universe. I guess one difference is GTA is very much a Satire of American culture whereas Red Dead generally takes itself a lot more seriously.
an interesting note about Sadie. She semi recently (like a few months ago in game time) went from a rancher to an outlaw. So her mixing up the terms machine gun and gatling gun isnt that hard to believe as being just a mistake on her part calling one fast firing weapon another.
Just a slight addition: 9:25 There are two more parts of the United States that use the term commonwealth. These are the "Commonwealth of Puerto Rico" and the "Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands". In addition, before becoming independent in 1946, the "Commonwealth of the Philippines" was part of the United States. Aside from that, just a wonderful piece of research and historical insight you've brought us with this latest video. I hope you also make "Real History" videos of other Rockstar games, like GTA: LCS and VCS and the Max Payne trilogy or even Bully. I would love to see what you'd come up with for a deep dive of those games. Keep it up!
Those types of castle can be found throughout the Caribbean. In Puerto Rico we have 3. Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo San Cristobal, and Palacio de Santa Catalina (later renamed to La Fortaleza)

Well it was sent from Cuba. And I imagine the Cuban military was underfunded compared to the U.S. and other colonial states. But I'm also surprised that Bill is shooken by an ironclad, out of date no less. Maybe he hasn't seen much naval combat and stayed fighting natives.
Dudes gonna qualify for a PhD in American history when this is done
yeaaa i love this series. seriously one of my favorites to watch on youtube right now
What a great timing, I just finished Guarma again one hour again. Keep up your nice work!
Always happy to see this series get a new video! Keep up the good work
This series is really cool after you review the main missions do you think you could review stranger missions or random events?
This game will continue to amaze us for ages to come
The amount of research used to make this video must be incredible
Even the fugging dialogue has detail man
Another terrific video that deepens and increases the joy of Red Dead Redemption 2! Love the details, the narration, the pleasant voice, all of it. Looking forward to the next one, as always.
i absolutely love when your videos show up in my recommended
such amazing research, you made me realize how deep this recreation of the U.S. is, what a great job rockstar did
God I love these videos, interested to see if you'll do the epilogue chapters too, would love to see it! Thank's for making these vids, they really make my favourite game of all time even better
When this series eventually ends you should merge all the videos together to make one long video I think it would be cool
beautiful videos man rdr2 easily my favorite game of all time. was just going through my 4th full play through when i hit chapter one video and been watching as i go through the game. been amazing keep it up.
missed opportunity to talk about the ship they travel on which is wreck, so far the closed match to the ship was in 1898 where a cargo steam loaded from Pennsylvania loaded with coal (not necessarily Pennsylvanian coal foundered in a storm in the Caribbean but i cannot remember the name.
This is such a great series. Love all the time and effort. Can’t wait for the next episode.
It's always a pleasant surprise when these videos show up in my feed.
There was a grainary explosion in my home town when I was a kid. All the dust from moving the corn through the elevator caught a spark and it blew like gunpowder.
Do you think Rockstar named their version of Theodore Roosevelt, Thaddeus “Waxman” because of his wax figure character from Night at the Museum 🤷🏾♂️
Hmmmm ur probably right
Been waiting for this. Love this content man some of the best out there
I have visited Buxton, IA.
The best series on yt
Such an amazing video again man. You do a great job with each and every one of these ❤️
I have this game for 2 years, and i never saw the shrunken head in Lakay
That's what happens if you don't investigate all the places and do the story missions instead so you'll miss small details like this heh 😅
I love these videos. I'm a huge history nerd and watching these videos is so interesting. Keep it up I need themmmmmm!!!!!
You clearly did your research, can't imagine how that took. Thanks for sharing your findings
Joaquin Phoenix looks just like Pinkerton
I legit just remembered this series yesterday and was like I wonder when well see chapter 5
Excellent video, you can sense the effort put into it
i get so excited whenever one of these videos comes out, keep up the good work
Absolutely love this series, brilliant work
Always a good day when Real Pixels uploads.
All these town share a few similarities with Annesburg:
-A large coal mine that is the sole source of jobs in the town
-Situated on river that gives navigational access to the mouth of a river near St. Denis/New Orleans
-Steep mountainous terrain on the shores of the river
-Access to a major railroad that made coal a major part of their freight traffic (IRL: the former C&O, now CSX)
That's just my experience from actually living in the area for a couple of years.
Ah, finally. I've been patiently waiting for this. Tysm!
This is one of my favorite channels keep grinding
I find Red Dead interesting in that it has fictional states and towns/cities like GTA, but also refers in name to real world places as well. Like Cuba, Tahiti and New York.
Just seems an odd mix of the two worlds despite quite a few Easter eggs suggesting both franchises are set in the same universe.
I guess one difference is GTA is very much a Satire of American culture whereas Red Dead generally takes itself a lot more seriously.
I just love your vids they are always high quality you can see the effort put into making it thanks
I think the castle is also based off of el morro in puerto rico especially with the design of the the lookouts
an interesting note about Sadie. She semi recently (like a few months ago in game time) went from a rancher to an outlaw. So her mixing up the terms machine gun and gatling gun isnt that hard to believe as being just a mistake on her part calling one fast firing weapon another.
This was super cool, informative, and entertaining! Well done, more RDR2 please!!!
Just a slight addition:
9:25 There are two more parts of the United States that use the term commonwealth.

I love theese videos you put so much work in to them I can tell keep it up man
I love these videos so much. Keep doing a great job!
The guarma soundtrack is some of the best music I've ever heard in a video game
I absolutely love this series and watch the new videos as soon as they come out. After this series ends, can we get a How Historically Accurate is Red Dead Redemption 1?
You do really a good job mate 👍
Hey my friend, you are an amazing content creator. Another quality video like always, thank you for your hard work
That fort is literally Fortín San Juan de la Cruz in Puerto Rico
Crazy how this game sparks inspiration for TH-cam. From history to the guns used. I find that amazing.
