This was a great episode. It’s so interesting learning about how Mr Blackwood started and a little about an elite sheep farmer. It was also great that you both shared your experience with him.
Shout out for Tamdhu in the pod. I work there and have texels. Purchased from sales and privately from Alan and he is as genuine a guy iv dealt with. Always says hello and asks how im getting on, when hes a big guy to my small fry means alot👌🏼
Cammy's almost right. Lol. Moët & Chandon was established by Claude Moët, who is of Dutch origin (not German). In dutch you do pronounce the t. I'm having a lot of fun listening to Fed by Farmers. I think you are reminding folks that everything we eat comes from a farm. Great job Cammy and Iona.
A guinea is £ 1.05 pence and all pedigree livestock are sold in guineas and the Auctioneer take the 5 pence as commission..well they do here in Ireland .great content . Totally agree in the need for unity amongst primary producers with regard to prices and marketing ..but I recall a situation in Ireland where fat cattle producers didnt market any cattle in a bid to get better price per kilo in the 80s . And the abattoir owners got together and after discussion said that they should increase price per kilo by 2pence and then they would get cattle ..and one BIG abbitoir owner said no , we will reduce the price by another two pence per kilo and we will get all the cattle we want and thats what they did , as yes we cant hold on to fat stock for ever.
I think that the UK does well with sheep for meat because the people ate them for hundreds of years. Americans didn't. Pork is relatively inexpensive in California.
Ah that was some craic , what a fantastic interview especially the hungover story, great fun , great insights into his breeding strategies .As an reader of the Scottish Farmer for years I've always admired the quality and dedication of the stock men and woman of Scotland .I think we deserve part 2 from Alan , and there's no shortage of future candidates for the pod cast .Great work team .

Would have been good to hear about the traits he is looking for in the breeds. But well done for another interesting listen.
