    What a simple and great solution! I tried the shotglass method and it didn't work. I was really worried about two baby quails and then found this video. Thank you!! It was not only pretty easy but it also worked. Saved two lives!

    Thanks for this video. I have looked up a number of videos on how to fix splayed leg and have tried a few of them - none of which were successful. The band aid method has been the easiest to apply in my opinion and has been successful!

Every morning I get up my baby Quail has only one leg attached to the bandaid and its spay leg outstretched like originally found. I have to replace it several times a day. I won't give up though, I am going to keep trying

    Hi, thanks so much for the video! I'm glad there are videos out there like this to help people when needed. I have a duckling that's about 4 weeks old and has had splayed leg for about 3 weeks now. Do you think it is curable at this point? I only haven't done anything to this affect yet because up until today I believed it was a niacin deficiency (even though I have been doing nothing but giving him niacin). Thanks!

    • @MrAnimalFarm
      @MrAnimalFarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have not tried this with parakeets, but I would assume that it would work the same. We leave it on until they are walking strong enough to pop it off themselves. If it comes off and their legs still aren't in the right position, you can put it on again.

    I need to do this ASAP but have a question. Should I wrap the tape loosely around the joint so not to cut the circulation?
    I tried it with a baby pigeon but Could Not Do It. lol
    I tried it 3 times. It kept either sticking to my finger tips or his tiny feathers. We both got exhausted. lol
    Must try again.. this time not by myself.

    • @MrAnimalFarm

      Correct, it should not be so tight that it cuts the circulation off. But also should not be so loose it doesn't stay in place.

    Sad news, I lost my spayed legged baby Quail. I think I kept it out of its warm environment too long while trying to get another brace on its tiny little legs. Either that or it was fed up with being bugged every few hours. It was not like the baby chick you demonstrated, it kicked and squirmed constantly, it was very difficult to get it on.

    • @MrAnimalFarm
      @MrAnimalFarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aw, I am really sorry to hear that :-( Sometimes, we will hold the baby over the brooder area while fixing the brace so that it still has the heat from the brooder if it seems to be small. Maybe try that next time?

    Hi Good morning I tried this an the chick is now laying on its side and still can't get up...how long before it starts to work? Couple days?

    • @MrAnimalFarm
      @MrAnimalFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It usually depends how severe the splay leg is. But a few days usually gets most fixed. If it's unable to walk with the bandage, make sure it cannot be trampled by other chicks, and that you help it get to food and water. Usually they get the hang of walking with it fairly quickly unless they are weak or the splay leg is very severe.

  • @fernandobonilla1091
    @fernandobonilla1091 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    What if the chick had it's leg stretched out behind them? Is that still considered a splayed leg, or something else? The chick was not born that way. It was a result of something falling on top of him ( I don't know exactly what happened considering that he was only brought to me after the fact.) I appreciate any input.

    • @MrAnimalFarm
      @MrAnimalFarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, If the leg is a result of something falling on the chick, then it is not considered splay leg. Essentially, splay leg is a slipped tendon, so it is fixable by providing the brace to get the tendon back in place. If something fell on the chick, I would be concerned that there are other issues going on - hip out of socket, broken bones etc. I suppose you could try this brace, but I don't know if it would be safe or successful.

    • @MrAnimalFarm
      @MrAnimalFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen and known people who use small rubber bands instead. You may be able to find a tutorial using those. They don't like it at first for sure but most usually figure out how to walk with them pretty quickly.

      I am not sure what you mean by "keeping his leg up". If you mean it keeps kicking the band-aid off, but the leg still isn't fixed. You can try a second band-aid or vet wrap to hold it better.

      We have not tried this with pigeons, but I would think it would work.

    My chick keeps lying on it's side and can't get up it's 2 days old now, btw it's a quail chick.

      Does it have splayed leg? It could be weak. Are you seeing it eating and drinking? You might try some probiotics or electrolytes in it's water.

      MrAnimal Farm it seems to be good now. It's eating and drinking, it just falls over every now and then. 🐥

      MrAnimal Farm actually now. Do have a promblem, a chick hatched last night, it keeps lying on its back and and can't get up.. WHAT DO I DO, also it's has curled. That's my question why did I get such good hatches then after the 20th the hatching went down hill, I keep getting chicks who can't walk or have curled toes.

      Hi, you can check out our video on curled toes at: th-cam.com/video/8qCu3gu_kGE/w-d-xo.html to see how to treat them. There are several things that can cause curled toes.
      Is there anything new in our incubation set-up? New incubator, more or less chicks, trouble with humidity or temperature? Not sure where you are located, but at this time of year here the outside temperatures are changing drastically (it was 70 yesterday and is 30 today). Those outside temperature swings will often times also cause the incubator temperature to vary more widely and can cause hatching issues.

    Do I need to put my chick in a separate box for recovery?

      If it's not able to walk well with the brace (which is common), we move it with one buddy to a separate area.
