      I have a question, I deal with eczema at times so this would be something I will definitely try, my only question is if this bar is good for eczema why would there be oatmeal in it, its oatmeal drying. ?

    I absolutely love what you do hun. I'm a soap maker and using natural ingredients in soaping and Milk. I don't think everyone knows how difficult it is. A lot of chemistry goes into that and you have to work out how much water is in your puree then water discount then if you want to do color and swirls worrying about trace and what colors won't morph. Brava my dear. Huge fan. I make a lot of natural botanical puree soaps so I know..looks wonderful.

    • @elainem7722
      @elainem7722 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why do you have to work out how much water is in your puree? Don't you just reduce your water amount by the amount of your puree? Thanks.

    For those wanting to try in-pot swirl, DON'T mix it too much while in the pot! In this case, for that tiny amount of white soap, I wouldn't have swirled it at all. I would have maybe turned the bowl as I poured. Been making soap for over 3 years and watching tutorials for 2 yrs before that.
    Thanks for the idea of using turmeric and I have access to local raw honey. 😍

      Even better, add cinnamon directly to the grounds when brewing your coffee, it adds a lovely flavour, AND is great for diabetics. If in ANY doubt, run it by your doctor! My cleaning lady dropped 20+ lbs without doing anything different in her life, except drinking my coffee in the morning instead of her local coffee shop's, and with mine, she was getting full fat cream and sugar. Her Dr. Asked her what she was doing differently, all she could come up with was my coffee, she told him what I did to customize it to my own taste, he leaped on the *cinnamon*, said "THAT'S it, keep drinking that! In fact, try to get an extra cup "to go." The more you can get into you, regularly, the better. Find out EXACT MEASUREMENTS, so you can duplicate it on days you're not going there!" I forgot to tell her to tell him, I also add three whole cloves to the basket before adding in the cinnamon powder and then the ground coffee. It's just what *I* like. If she didn't like it, I do keep a jar of instant around for just that reason. Could always make her a cup of her own taste. But it wasn't an issue, she adored the odours and really wanted to try some...so she did! And does NOT take it black. Same as me. Triple cream, double sugar, yet she was losing weight on it. Truth to tell, woman works like a trouper! Anyone WATCHING her would expect she'd lose weight! No matter what, she just goes and goes and goes. Makes the Energizer bunny look like a slacker. Yet she went from prediabetic to "nowhere near at risk", apparently just because of the added spoonful(about)of ground cinnamon in the coffee grounds that the hot water percolated through. If the cloves had anything to do with it, there were 3 whole ones right in the very bottom, under the cinnamon. But I've never been able to find anything anywhere relating cloves to weight or diabetes, or even insulin effectiveness. 🤷‍♀️

    I absolutely LOVED this video! Is there a shelf life to this soap because of the free carrot purée? And what exactly is the lye for when making soap?

    • @SunshineSoapandCandleCompany
      @SunshineSoapandCandleCompany  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Jasmine Flowers thank you! The shelf life is about one year. Lye is a necessary ingredient to turn the oils into soap. Once the oils and the lye combine, and the molecules bind to each other you have soap. The carrots get preserved in this process.

    • @MsElizabethRichard
      @MsElizabethRichard 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SunshineSoapandCandleCompany if you melt down base vs from scratch, is the shelf life the same? May seem like a dumb question, but a newbie. If the lye is not actively working and essentially gone in a base, I imagine the shelf life is way lower?

      Cory O'Briant I made my soap yesterday and I let it solidify overnight for 12 hours. This morning when I cut it, the loaf broke into pieces. I was able to get the middle to look like a half decent bar. It was a one pound loaf and I cut it with a kitchen knife. Is that where I may have gone wrong?

    • @SunshineSoapandCandleCompany
      @SunshineSoapandCandleCompany  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Curly Hijabi soap making takes a lot of practice and there is a big learning curve. Could your measurements have been off? There a number of different things that could have caused. I have never unmolded a soap after 12 hours. My recipes need at least 24 hours to set up. But yours was brittle after 12 hours. Can you take a pic?

    • @JustOutHereTrustingGod
      @JustOutHereTrustingGod 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cory O'Briant I didn’t use exact measurements on the distilled water. It called for 4.95 ounces and I put 4 ounces. And I was an ounce over on my oil. I can’t find a way to attach a picture unfortunately 😩

    • @SunshineSoapandCandleCompany
      @SunshineSoapandCandleCompany  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Curly Hijabi ok so back to the drawing board! Those measurements should have been fine. Sometimes it can get hard and brittle from not enough water or too much sodium hydroxide. Also, it can get brittle if you use too much palm or cocoa butter or beeswax or stearin acid. On your next batch, try reducing your hard oils and butters and making sure the water is spot on. It really shouldn’t be ready to come out if the mold in 12 hours

      Here is some helpful info I found.
      It’s recommended that your equipment be used only for soap making. Most of it can be picked up inexpensively at yard sales or thrift shops. You’ll need:
      a scale to measure ingredients
      a stainless steel or enamel pot
      a glass or plastic pitcher for mixing and pouring the lye
      plastic containers for holding oil while it’s being weighed - I use 32 oz plastic yogurt containers
      2 large plastic or wooden spoons - one for stirring the lye and one for the oils
      a spatula
      2 thermometers - one for the lye and one for the oil
      soap mold - this can be as simple as a shoe box lined with plastic or parchment paper, a plastic tray with sides, or a plastic shoe box
      rubber gloves - wear these the entire time
      cardboard to fit over the molds
      a blanket to insulate the cooling soap
      When properly prepared with exact measurements, a chemical reaction occurs called saponification, turning it into soap with glycerin. Then if cured for several weeks, no lye will remain in the final product.
      Check out website learningandyearning.com/basic-soap-making/

      The most accurate measurement is to put your container on some good scientific scales, and weigh in the ingredients. But you need to record the weight of the container itself, because most scales have very poor memories.

    I have used ground cinnamon. If you ground it yourself you can have it more or less coarse. If you blend the cinnamon in it will act as a colorant. I have also used it with a thicker trace and layered it in dry. It was a great exfoliant when done that way. You can make a crust on the bottom and top as well.

    • @imani1193
      @imani1193 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You unfortunately can't make soap without lye. Even melt and pour soaps contain lye. If you want a soap that isn't as harsh, just use more fat; it may not lather as much, but it will be more gentle on the skin.

    • @mamasimmerplays4702
      @mamasimmerplays4702 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You make a superfatted soap, so that you are certain that all of the lye has found fat to react with and there is still some fat left over. So long as the fat you're using is something beneficial for your skin, the unreacted fat in your finished product will be a positive. You definitely do not want unreacted lye in your finished soap for use on your skin! But it can be useful in the laundry.

    • @SunshineSoapandCandleCompany
      @SunshineSoapandCandleCompany  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Lisa Surles great question! Lye, water and oil are the base ingredients in any soap that lathers. It cannot be made without lye. Once the ingredients are mixed together it starts to turn into soap. Within 24 hours most soaps are mild enough to touch but you want to let it cure for 4 to 6 weeks for
      The soap to harden and become even more gentle. Lye in its raw form is not a safe ingredient for the skin. I hope this makes sense 😊

      Cory is correct. The chemical reaction of lye mixed in water, milks or other fluids then combined with fats or oils or a combination of those creates soap. After complete mixing and saponification the lye is no longer present as a destructive chemical, it is soap.

    Is lye what harden soap? Curious that gloves and protective eye wear is needed to protect skin from lye but it’s used in soap? Can soap be made without lye? 🤷‍♀️

    • @meganm8304
      @meganm8304 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sueqethea Jones all real soap is made with lye. During the saponification process(chemical joining of lye and oil/fat molecules to create soap and natural glycerin) all the lye is used up as oil turns to soap. So when the soap is done curing there is no lye left. If there is lye left something was done wrong in the mixing process or you used too much. Typically if you don’t use lye none of your ingredients will bind together and it’s just a gloopy mess

It’s dangerous to add plain lye to anything without knowing exactly what you are doing. This is two years late.
