excellent chris, i'm made up for you mate, you just never know when you're going to stumble across them 😉 it's very easy to lose hope when you've been biteless for a few hours but that's how the canal is and it's those pockets of fish you need to find. 4 fish for 8lb is an outstanding result and if my experience is anything to go by you might be able to drop back on that spot now and again, just fish it lightly (now and again) so you don't push them out 👍 all you need to do now is find yourself a few more spots like that, that's how my fishing goes, I search for a while then return my bankers 👍 the banker in this film is done unfortunately, I've bumped into a couple of lure anglers on there and I've been through the spot twice now and been biteless, i'll have to be careful with my next film and see if I can keep the area under wraps 😉 well done again mate, brilliant result that 👍
brought one of those jointed shads and in 2 short after work sessions i had 4 takes, 2 pike actually hooked into and 1 landed, better than any lure i’ve ever used
Great stuff! I'm in Rugby, Warwickshire, and whilst we have LOADS of canals to go at, they are all chocolate milkshake. I've been out on a few walks, checking out the Grand Union, etc, but just thought it would be a waste of time chucking my lures. Your video has given me both the knowledge and confidence to go to canals I KNOW hold great perch, zander and pike, and target the beasties. Thank you, you've made my £200 tackle cash drop to get set up for this new, to me, style of fishing NOT seem like a bit of a waste of cash. Of course I've liked, subscribed and rang the bell. MORE PLEASE!!!
thanks mate, yeah it can be daunting fishing in chocolate coloured water, it becomes a case of grinding them out. i find dibbling lures like that pretty boring, it's all about covering as much water as you can to try and pin down the locations of the fish. despite canals being huge places you tend to find bites come from the same spots each time. if you have matches on your canal check the match results, pay a visit and talk to the match anglers at the end, there will usually be one peg in each section they refer to as a 'flier' because it wins most of the time, those pegs are holding areas for bait fish and the predators won't be far behind👍
Great video, found it very useful! Really struggled on my local coloured canal, but been bagging up on the clearer waters. Going to head back to my coloured canal tomorrow after watching this and hopefully I'll have more joy.
good luck mate, it's a useful way to catch some fish in coloured water, you won't catch loads but if you can find deep margins under your feet you should find a few fish here and there, expect to find a lot of barren areas too though👍
@@attilaszarvas9891 yeah you'll need your rod licence, you may be asked to pay for a day ticket too, it's rare to see a bailiff but you should keep £5 or so in your pocket just in case one comes along👍
great stuff mark bang on colloured water dosent stop the predators finding that lure im fishing colloured water 99% of the time and catch plenty and nice to see you dibbling never fails!!!!
cheers dave 👍 its always been a favourite of mine, not hard work either, if anything it can get a bit boring just plodding up and down the canal, my mate calls the method creeping death because you can die of boredom doing it...lol...but you're right though, it never fails 👍
Very informative video, the canals around Rugby /Crick are very busy and so are very coloured and I do find it off putting but I’ll try and see how I get on
thanks russ, that sounds like the shroppy near chester where this was filmed, it's a good method for grinding out a bite but you do get long periods of nothing before you hit a fish or two, you'll find over time that bites tend to come from the same places👍
Finding this video has made me so happy. Great video Mark. I've been ripping my hair with constant blanks on the Shropshire Union. First thing after work tomorrow i'm going to try these tactics. Subscribed and looking forward to the future vids.
its a tough canal jimbob, even with these tactics it can still be tough going, I generally find the fish are in pockets, you can cover loads of water with no bites then all of a sudden you stumble across some fish, the hardest part is finding them. just keep moving and bouncing that lure off the bottom 6" or so and eventually you'll start picking them up. another thing I found is that wherever you find them, they'll quite often be there again so you can build up a number of spots that are worth a try 👍 i'll be doing a bit more lure fishing this coming winter, most probably from November onwards. good luck mate, let me know how you get on👍
Cracking video buddy and very informative. I fished rivers a few times when they’ve been up and coloured and have some nice fish. Unfortunately I don’t have any canals where I live but the same rules apply I suppose. Some great fish and some great fishing to. Well done 🎣🎣👍🏽👍🏽😀😀
great video i am going out fishing along the grand union canal this evening down here in London and the video was very informative and will try and bit of dibbling this evening. I should be in church as i did not make it this morning but i will have a good chat with the Lord while im dibbling. God bless
good luck mate, it's a great method of fishing and providing there is enough depth in the margins you should do ok, don't worry of you don't catch anything for a while, you have to search out the fish with this method and there can be long stetches of bank with no fish around, you'll soon know when you find them👍
From a fishing point a few I hate the boats on canals scare away the fish and makes the water dirty my canal by me is really dirty cuz of it . They should limit the amount of boats that are load threw each day
there's good and bad from a fishing point of view chris, yes they make things more difficult but at the same time keeping the canal coloured up protects the fish stocks, if they weren't there and the canal was gin clear the cormorants would quickly destroy the fishing. i can live with them, if i had the money and could afford the upkeep i'd probably buy one😃
it's generally the same here, there are more perch around and they are our equivalent to your bass, the pike seem easier to catch in coloured water though? 👍🎣
Nice vid i think it helps when fishing down the side edge if it is coloured a bit .If I had to wait till the water was clear on my canal I would never get out .I use the fox micro fry yellow paddle tail it works great in coloured water .Looking forward to seeing more vids 👍
cheers sme, a bit of colour definitely helps, the fish only seem to be in the margins because of the boats and the colour of the water. I've been fishing a clear stretch of canal with no boats in the run up to making this vid, the fishing couldn't have been more different, it was far easier but all the fish came from the deeper centre channel with none caught down the edge. I guess they go where they feel comfortable and safe and that seems to depend on the amount of boat traffic 👍
Hi mark good video. used to do a bit if fishing with yourself when we both worked in Dantec. Still do a lot of predator fishing and do a fair bit on those canals. have always struggled a bit in coloured water. so youe video is a real eye opener. Fishing for pike up at pine view lake's in Cumbria over Christmas. hopefully catch a few. Will have to come out with you in the new year on the Dee. All the best. tight lines. Hynesy
Great video. Most of my fishing is done with lures on a coloured up canal in the north west. Ever tried a Mepps agila spin flex in white and orange. brilliant for pike & perch in coloured water. Has the advantage of a tiny spinner blade for vibration and flash coupled with a white soft plastic worm. Even better using a planner board which allows you to fish it along the far bank features such as moored board and under over hangs. Keep up the good work.
I've got a mepps aglia spinner in my box but not a spin flex mate, i'll look them up, judging by your description it sounds perfect for coloured water, I don't use a planer board myself but I do know a few areas on my local canal that would lend themselves perfectly to using one and i'm sure one will feature in my future fishing 👍
Cracking vid Mark. I fished exactly the same spot and sheltered under that same bridge a while ago but blanked pal, even cast under the boarding opposite and blanked. If you go again matey and fancy some company give me a shout I'm only 20 minutes away tops and do the Dee pretty often I was there last week.
cheers glyn, its a fine line catching from that area, I've fished it a few times but it seems to be the exact same spots that produce the fish, I went back there last Saturday and managed another pike and a couple of small perch but it was hard work with quite a few boats going through, one even turned around in the bay, all I could do was sit and eat some lunch whilst waiting for the area to settle again. My lure fishing sessions are always on Saturday afternoon for a couple of hours 1-3pm, I don't go to the same stretch every week but I do stop in at that area on a semi-regular basis so if you're passing and you see me there feel free to stop and say hello 👍
Great Mark cheers matey. I normally make it a 6 or 7hr session if I can wherever I go to make the most of a day off work. I'm sure to bump into you pal and very much look forward to it even on the Dee.
bloody hell glyn, is that 6 or 7 hrs walking up and down with a lure rod or do you fish static?, 2-3hrs is about as much walking as i'll do 😁 lol. I'm not sure what's happening with my dee fishing yet, all I can say so far is that i'll only fish there when we have a prolonged dry spell because I like it low and clear for pike and apart from that i'll be avoiding the city centre and farndon due to angling pressure on those two areas 👍
Yes matey that's walking a few miles and back just steady and a couple of coffees. I didn't think the angling pressure was on the pike and perch , I thought the course guys targeted chub, barbell dace etc. Not noticed anyone piking at Farndon but don't go by those pegs by the bridge. Strange not bumped into each other pal but I'll keep a look out lol
Glyn Hughes it's been a while since I was last there glyn, those pegs by the bridge have always been popular with pike anglers and I reckon i'll do better going off the beaten track 👍
Really good video. I must admit i do struggle with the thought of coloured water, and i know pike / perch still have to feed in it, but . . . . .! Tight lines.
I know where you're coming from Jason, it's taken me quite a while to come to terms with coloured water, it's a lot harder and you certainly don't catch as many fish but it's worth a go 👍
yes mate, it really is the colour of chocolate all year round due to the boats, I've never seen a canal like it, it's incredibly popular with boaters so they all look pale, the pike look even more pale if that's possible👍
Nice video mate that Pike was defo the same one🖒 a shad I do well on the shroppy is the Fox Spikey shad again based around that sphere of detection it had spines on which wobble and vibrate. Also a boobie rattle on the trace helps on there. Nice one 🖒🖒🖒
cheer jord, I've resisted adding those fox spikey shads to my lure box mate, I bought some of those vibro worms instead because they were cheaper 👍 no doubt i'll end up with a few in my lure box at some point but I need to lose a few first because I've got far too many 😁 lol
The best description of water clarity such as this I've heard was "Turd soup." It's not completely tooth proof, but what do you think about the 20+ kg fluorocarbon traces that you can buy?
I've never used those traces myself peter, I prefer wire specially if its coloured up with no visibility, i wouldn't rule out the fluoro, i do use it for dropshot and jigging for perch in clearer water but i'm not sure i could use it for all out pike fishing like some anglers do?.
hi phil, yes I do use a wire trace, on my reel I have green power pro braid, at the business end I have a wire trace with a link attached called a 'fas-snap' at one end and a swivel to tie to the braid at the other end, that's it really, I'm currently fishing for carp but i'll be swapping to lure fishing in November and the next video I do i'll show you the full setup👍
cheers mark can you still get the trace wire as finding it hard to get it in 6lb and its not cheap so any help would be grateful Fantastic video mark I am hoping to have a bash my self soon just getting the kit together your video is most helpful cheers ATB Phil
hi phil, I got the 6lb version from a small company called agm products, he has a cracking little site selling lure fishing gear, I've just checked and he doesn't have 6lb listed anymore but he does have 12lb and i'd be happy using that too, I've actually got k2k in 20lb as well and i'm happy using that too, in coloured water they can't really see it anyway but in clear water i'd want to go as light as possible, have a look at the agm website mate, a lot of my stuff comes from there👍
I found this and wondered if it would do the same job ? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AFW-Surflon-Micro-Ultra-1x19-Coated-Stainless-Leader-5m-All-Breaking-Strains/323480031032?var=512531504970
sorry phil, only just seen this, it got caught in youtube's filters because of the link, I've never used the stuff but it looks ok, it'll be very much a 'try it and see' purchase but on the plus side the american's are well ahead of us in the lure fishing stakes?👍
Cracking vid Mark. I tend to use the colored water as an excuse for not catching but you have completely changed my outlook on fishing my local canal. I caught dozens of perch on they crazy fish vibro worms in the early autumn. The dibbling method looks deadly and I look forward to trying it out in the coming days/weeks as they have cut back the reeds next to the bank on a long stretch of the canal. This will make it easier to cover more water. Thanks for sharing and tight lines 👍
thanks kyle, if I've changed your outlook then this video has done it's job 😁 good luck on your local mate, you should be able to track them down even at this time of year, let me know how you get on mate 👍
it's a good time to start rob, the fishing might be slower because its colder but there are less boats around, just stick to the features mate, locks, bridges, moored boats, turnaround points and marinas etc, anywhere you think the fish will hang out👍
hi kev, thanks for the questions, in this video I was spooled with 18lb power pro braid in green, 10lb braid is ok for the canal, they had none in at the time so I made do with 18lb. For jig fishing I do use a trace, I use a titanium wire called knot 2 kinky, it's unobtrusive and really good. I do use yellow braid too but I tend to use it more for drop shotting and I use it with a fluorocarbon leader, the yellow braid helps with bites and the last few feet of fluorocarbon is virtually invisible so the fish don't spook off it. The fox rage yellow braid you have will be perfect for dropshot fishing👍
Hi mark big Dave from Leicester chatted couple weeks ago while you were on live broadcast I’ve been doing ok last week or finding my first pike on lures and catching chub but I’ve hit a blank on perch even little wasps I’ve noticed on various Facebook groups this seems to be a common problem can you give any advice on why this is or is this generally the case during winter cheers bud merry crimbo and happy new year
what lures and method are you using for the perch dave?, as a general rule i'd say if you're not catching then they aren't there?, but the type of lure and presentation can make all the difference👍
Mark Carp you name it western paddle tale various colours and size drop shot jigging I’ve tried locks bridges etc heading for a marina tomorrow see if that’s helps happy with the pike but love stripys
@@thelureofcornwall try something other than a paddle tail dave, a critter or creature bait like a crayfish or a worm, scale down too, use a 1 or 1.5" lure and a very light jig head of 1 gram with a fluorocarbon hooklength, if there are perch around they should fall for a worm, critter or creature bait and scaling down should get you some wasps, the shads are great but sometimes they aren't the answer👍
it's not great but it's ok andrew, pike and perch are better suited to cold water than carp so i switch to lure fishing at this time of year, i find short sessions and a few bites more interesting than grinding it out for the carp. having said that, pike and perch are cold blooded too so they are more likely to chase a lure in summer when the water is warmer. I estimate you catch 3 times as many fish in summer than you do in winter when you're lure fishing, it's just that the carp fishing is better then. You can get the bites at this time of year though and it's not a bad way to pass a few hours and keep yourself ticking over until spring👍
@@MarkCarp yh i was thinking the same about the carp side of things just starting up perch and pike fishing as you know i only normally fish for carp but heard in winter is the time for pike and perch
@@andrewl9311 it's definitely better than the carp fishing andrew, that's why i make the swap, a couple of hours out with the lure rod and home in time for tea is a good way to spend a winters day/afternoon, it beats sitting there suited and booted up behind motionless carp rods and the pike and perch are definitely more catchable than the carp right now👍
as long as you are lifting the lure off the bottom you'll get the vibrations tommy, sometimes perch will attack a static lure so I sometimes I leave it stationary and count to 5 or 10 before lifting the lure off the bottom again, if you are on fish the pause can sometimes provoke a take👍
yes it is, I even say it may be the same fish in the film, it's an occupational hazard when you catch a fish and release it, then go over the same stretch again, it's not the first time I've caught the same pike in the same swim, it happens a lot more often than people realise👍
yeah they are indifferent to them Bernie, but the boats churn the bottom quite badly, they kick up all kinds of crap and i've found it takes a while to settle again, i certainly don't like seeing more than a couple of boats in any one session👍
cheers spencer, this was one of my first 'proper' videos with me 'presenting', it's not my best for sure and i'm definitely at the bottom of the learning curve on this one👍 The advice is sound though👍
the first and second pike are the same fish look at then triangle shaped marking behind the head of the fish they are exactly the same fish dude if u gona do a fishing vidio at least do it righ
i'm aware it's the same fish mate, I guess we can't dictate what hits the lure and that little fella just had a bad day, it's not the first time I've caught the same fish in the same session when pike fishing, if you go back over the same area there is always a chance it will happen, if nothing else it shows the lures work 👍
it's definitely the same fish mate, the second capture there is a little spec of blood on the tail caused during the second fight. I don't get many repeats like this but it is always a possibility when you go back over the same swim as I did in this case. The captures were about an hour and a half apart.
yeah he must have been very hungry that day joker, he certainly had a bad day getting caught twice 👍 I've been through that area a few times since filming this but he must have moved on, I've had a slightly bigger fish then blanked a couple of times. Pike don't like a lot of pressure and I know i'm not the only one who's been fishing that spot. I reckon it's done and time to move on so I probably won't go back there again 👍
im talking about the triangle shaped mark just behind the gill plate of the pike as ull see theere is the same marking on both fish pics he caught it didnt realease it vidioed it again and made out it was another fish

Glyn Hughes it's been a while since I was last there glyn, those pegs by the bridge have always been popular with pike anglers and I reckon i'll do better going off the beaten track 👍
Nice video Mark
awesome video lol got myself one of those shad slash baits n they have great swim actions but still need to get a fish with it haha.
catching fish with them won't be a problem, the jointed shad rap is one of the best fishing lures there is mate👍
haha lol nz trouts proved stubborn so far XD
never really lure fished, think its about time I give it a try
it's easy and cheap enough to get started andy, just beware of buying too many lures👍😁
Really good video. I must admit i do struggle with the thought of coloured water, and i know pike / perch still have to feed in it, but . . . . .! Tight lines.
I know where you're coming from Jason, it's taken me quite a while to come to terms with coloured water, it's a lot harder and you certainly don't catch as many fish but it's worth a go 👍
Can tell the water is cloudy permanently. Look how pale the colours are on them perch
yes mate, it really is the colour of chocolate all year round due to the boats, I've never seen a canal like it, it's incredibly popular with boaters so they all look pale, the pike look even more pale if that's possible👍
Do u use a wire trace could you show how your set up works from reel to hook cheers
hi phil, yes I do use a wire trace, on my reel I have green power pro braid, at the business end I have a wire trace with a link attached called a 'fas-snap' at one end and a swivel to tie to the braid at the other end, that's it really, I'm currently fishing for carp but i'll be swapping to lure fishing in November and the next video I do i'll show you the full setup👍
cheers mark can you still get the trace wire as finding it hard to get it in 6lb and its not cheap so any help would be grateful Fantastic video mark I am hoping to have a bash my self soon just getting the kit together your video is most helpful cheers ATB Phil
hi phil, I got the 6lb version from a small company called agm products, he has a cracking little site selling lure fishing gear, I've just checked and he doesn't have 6lb listed anymore but he does have 12lb and i'd be happy using that too, I've actually got k2k in 20lb as well and i'm happy using that too, in coloured water they can't really see it anyway but in clear water i'd want to go as light as possible, have a look at the agm website mate, a lot of my stuff comes from there👍
I found this and wondered if it would do the same job ? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AFW-Surflon-Micro-Ultra-1x19-Coated-Stainless-Leader-5m-All-Breaking-Strains/323480031032?var=512531504970
sorry phil, only just seen this, it got caught in youtube's filters because of the link, I've never used the stuff but it looks ok, it'll be very much a 'try it and see' purchase but on the plus side the american's are well ahead of us in the lure fishing stakes?👍
Good vid mate
cheers dan👍
Hi Mark. What are the copy two lures you talk about and were can I get them. Cheers
hi jason, i get mine from here.... www.agmdiscountfishing.co.uk/product-category/soft-plastic-lures/shads-swimbaits/
Really enjoyed the video. Thanks Mark
@@JasonWatson-k4i thanks mate, be careful with your ordering, that basket mounts up pretty quickly🤣
Good video man
thanks robert, I hope you find it useful 👍
looking at getting back to fishing and want to try some predator fishing. is it a bad time to do small jig fishing I live right by some canals
it's a good time to start rob, the fishing might be slower because its colder but there are less boats around, just stick to the features mate, locks, bridges, moored boats, turnaround points and marinas etc, anywhere you think the fish will hang out👍
What line are you spooked with? Is for rage yellow braid ok? What strain is best for perch and pike secondly .. do you use trace?
hi kev, thanks for the questions, in this video I was spooled with 18lb power pro braid in green, 10lb braid is ok for the canal, they had none in at the time so I made do with 18lb.
Always use a trace even if your not fishing for pike
Mark Carp cheers mark I’ll get my self some cheers mate chat soon
Whats it like in the winter for perch and pike mate
it's not great but it's ok andrew, pike and perch are better suited to cold water than carp so i switch to lure fishing at this time of year, i find short sessions and a few bites more interesting than grinding it out for the carp. having said that, pike and perch are cold blooded too so they are more likely to chase a lure in summer when the water is warmer.
@@andrewl9311 it's definitely better than the carp fishing andrew, that's why i make the swap, a couple of hours out with the lure rod and home in time for tea is a good way to spend a winters day/afternoon, it beats sitting there suited and booted up behind motionless carp rods and the pike and perch are definitely more catchable than the carp right now👍
@@MarkCarp yh thank you mate just waiting for my new lure set up to come is the savage gear medium lure outfit anygood do you know
@@andrewl9311 i've never seen it andrew, do you know the weight rating?
Have you ever fished in the Lancaster Canal? :)
sorry mate I haven't, it's just too far away from me and there are several other canals that are much closer to home.
alright thanks for the reply mate
no worries mate, sorry I can't help ;)
Does it work if the vibrations come from jigging it off the bottom when it hits the bed? Great video anyway 🎣👍🏼
as long as you are lifting the lure off the bottom you'll get the vibrations tommy, sometimes perch will attack a static lure so I sometimes I leave it stationary and count to 5 or 10 before lifting the lure off the bottom again, if you are on fish the pause can sometimes provoke a take👍
Nice video! How many cm is the rapala lure?
it's 7cm Vasilis, a smallish lure that reflects the size if the pike in the canal, the rapala code for it is JSR07 👍
wowww good
These two pikes are actually one and the same fish, look at the scratches on it...
yes it is, I even say it may be the same fish in the film, it's an occupational hazard when you catch a fish and release it, then go over the same stretch again, it's not the first time I've caught the same pike in the same swim, it happens a lot more often than people realise👍
I’ve found boats going passed makes no difference, the fish are totally indifferent to them.
yeah they are indifferent to them Bernie, but the boats churn the bottom quite badly, they kick up all kinds of crap and i've found it takes a while to settle again, i certainly don't like seeing more than a couple of boats in any one session👍
😂🤣😂
great video but try add a smile
at the start
cheers spencer, this was one of my first 'proper' videos with me 'presenting', it's not my best for sure and i'm definitely at the bottom of the learning curve on this one👍 The advice is sound though👍
no problem keep it up
the first and second pike are the same fish look at then triangle shaped marking behind the head of the fish they are exactly the same fish dude if u gona do a fishing vidio at least do it righ
i'm aware it's the same fish mate, I guess we can't dictate what hits the lure and that little fella just had a bad day, it's not the first time I've caught the same fish in the same session when pike fishing, if you go back over the same area there is always a chance it will happen, if nothing else it shows the lures work 👍
yea they are they the 1st and second fish have the same marking behind the head dont lie dude
it's definitely the same fish mate, the second capture there is a little spec of blood on the tail caused during the second fight.
Hynesy
yea no problems mark. defo give you a shout in January about going fishing on the dee. All the best
