I've discovered drop shot fishing over the last couple of months, and have mainly been catching perch and jacks by moving the rig along nearside canal weed growth, finding fish holding close to the edges or in weed bed gaps. I am a fly fisher and have been for a good few years but local waters to Warrington are all about 45mins drive and either stocking is light or they have been pricked a few times and it seems to be getting harder to have a few pulls than it used to be . I used go spinning for pike 30 years ago but things appear to have moved on and with canals being local ( LYMM ) perhaps I think it may be worth the investment to supplement my fix 👍😂🎣 . • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi Ronnie, the hook i'm using in this video is a size 6, for dropshot with small lures of 2" or less a 6 or an 8 is perfect mate👍 I personally wouldn't use a 5 turn water knot, in this dropshot video you've commented on i'm using a grinner knot on either side of the spinshot hook, if you don't have a spinshot just use a palomar knot instead, these are both tied with fluorocarbon and the fluoro is attached to the braid with a 'shock leader knot'. All the knots are on this channel mate, just bring up a list of all the videos and have a look for them👍

      Great and thanks for your kind reply .I am ordering some spinshot hooks as now I have had a second view it makes perfect sense and the way forward ..By watching information like this and using the methods it means you don’t get into any bad habits ( like the water knot )Lol . • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi dan, yes you can do dropshotting any time you want, in fact it's more a summer thing, because its warmer and the fish are more willing to chase a lure, you catch a lot more in summer than in winter, on average i'd say 3 to 4 times more fish in summer than in winter. It's only nutters like me that take it up when it's gone cold, trouble is there are carp, barbel and catfish to go for and I prefer them in summer👍 give it a go any time you want mate👍🎣

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi mustafa, the short answer is no, it's a specialist rig for predators like pike and perch. I know carp will chase fry now and again but it's not really a very good method for catching them. I've seen them caught on dropshot rigs but only on commercial fisheries which are overstocked and have far too many fish in them👍

    Do you have to use fluro on the bottom swivel ?

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you don't need to use the rig with fluoro at all Stephen, before fluoro came along it was mono like maxima or even a wire uptrace if you were dropshotting for pike. having used it both ways there's no way i'm going back to mono, the fluoro wins hands down, it gets you a lot more bites, you can use mono below the swivel if you want but I wouldn't expect to get as many bites as a full fluoro rig👍🎣

      Mark Carp thank you for you time in answering my question it’s just I have trouble with the dropshot weight snapping the bottom line when moving it about

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know exactly what you mean Stephen, I've had the same problem myself, that's why I switched to the spinshot hook in the video because it's easier to change out without changing the whole rig. i'd still stick to fluoro though, if necessary you could use a higher breaking strain for the bottom section, the advantages of a line that's pretty much invisible to fish far outweigh having to do a re-tie now and again. it is a bit on the brittle side though, I just try and take care when moving the weight and try to get a few sessions out of it👍 the other thing you can do is tie up a few rigs ready and keep them in a wallet ready to use, that should help minimise the time it takes to change.

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes that's true mate, i have another video on this channel called jig fishing for beginners and i do exactly that. perch are a shoal fish and if you're staying in the same area definitely put them in a landing net or keep net in the edge. its the same for all shoaling fish, bream, chub, roach etc, you'll catch more if you retain them in a keepnet👍

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      not much in the way of similarity between a zig and the drop shot paul, apart from the fact that you fish your baits off the bottom, drop shot is quite unique, it allows you an awful lot of control when it comes to how close to the bottom you work the lure, you set the distance from the weight to the lure so you can keep it in a tight range, its a great rig for fishing round structures because you can slow your retrieve right down and literally leave the lure in the same place and just twitch it👍

    Spin shot hook fantastic idea

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah they work really well dave, i wasn't sure about them but when i got hold of them and saw just how small the swivel was i thought they'd be ok...and they have been, i can't see any difference between the spin shot hook and a conventional drop shot hook, they cost a lot more but they are really handy if you break the line moving your drop shot weight👍

    have you ever tried putting a real worm on when you are struggling? sometimes saves the blank for me

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      no mate i can't say i have, I've used the fake soft plastic ones or the leeches that are in this vid but never the real thing, thanks for the tip, i'll be giving that one a try, i would imagine it would work well specially with the end of the worm nipped off to give a bit of extra attraction👍

    I see a fair amount of anglers concerned about fish taking and not knowing they've gotten a bite with perch. The perch around my parts must be different because they snatch and run with it and immediately set themselves on the drop shot rig and you know they've taken the bait immediately. They also have a habit of taking the moment you hit the water or not at all.

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had it all mate, taking on the drop, following a lure in and snatching it at the last second, on some days they've been so finicky you have to leave the lure static to get a bite and on others they'll be super aggressive and hit everything. one thing I've noticed if they are under pressure and have been fished for regularly, I seem to get a few bites very early in the session then it dies pretty quickly and it's time to move on. if I suspect a bite but i'm not sure I usually leave the lure static for 10 seconds or so before restarting the retrieve, sometimes they'll take it static, others they'll hit it when it starts moving again and sometimes they just won't entertain it👍😁

      cheers chris/dave, i've had better results this winter but its been tough going, the colder than usual temps have meant I've struggled at times and this session was typical of my winter fishing in general, lots of effort for little reward!. It was just my luck i filmed this when the temps had plunged.

    spin shot makes your hooks flexible easier to swallow

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it certainly has some flexibility kev, i use the spin shot because it's nice and easy to set up but i also use the conventional drop shot rig and i can't tell the difference between them performance wise, they both work really well👍

      cheers mate, not sure what it's like down your way but the fishing has been really hard this winter, i do all my films in one trip and i catch what i catch on the day and this vid is the norm for me, lots of fishing for not much reward, it's been the same for a few of my mates too, we all seem to be struggling to catch much this winter.

    • @smallfryproductions2184
      @smallfryproductions2184 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I find winter is hard in general.on my local river chelmer perch and bait fish are everywhere but come winter you really have to work to find them!! But on the pike water I'm fishing days are hit and miss as well they are ever hard on it or you can't buy a bite . Just gotta put the graft in mukka .

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      too true mate, i can live with the graft, sometimes it's just getting out and being there, i get quite ratty if i don't get a few hours in each week so the slow fishing doesn't put me off👍

    Mark you fish much to heavy now you drag youre droplead, you must feel the differens between bodem and bait. With all respect theres much to learn in the future. I fish much lighter UL after a few years dropshotting theres the fun even an Pikes depens on your light quality gear is awsome. And every knot is an weak link if you use thin lines for natural behavior if you want to use the light baits.
    To much slack and you dont feel anything keep in controle with youre reelhandle let the tip do the work ( tic youre tip and controle the braid with the reel My tip to you m8 it really works, the bait moves much faster the killer for Perch.
    Nice Quality video Mark and hope youre enjoy dropshotting its wunderfull to do and you dont need much to carry, my regard to you 😎

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thanks Richard, yes i do tend to fish far too heavy and i'll be sorting that issue out in the future. It's funny you should say about the slack because I've already noticed i get more bites when i'm in tighter control, thanks for the input, it's much appreciated👍
