There is a huge difference in taste between regular and diet soda. If you drink one for some periods of time and then switch, you will notice the difference.
This is not true. The brain doesn't signal the pancreas to secrete insulin by tasting sweet. It works like this: insulin is secreted when pancreatic beta cells depolarize. They depolarize when their ATP-sensitive potassium channels close and positively charged potassium ions stop flowing out of them. This happens when we ingest the actual sugar, which is then absorbed to portal circulation, enters pancreas and is metabolized in pancreatic cells which then increases their ATP content (ATP = energy, provided by food as sugar among other macros). Also, sugar enters pancreas via different type of transporter that doesn't require insulin, unlike most other cells in the body. Artificial sweeteners cannot be metabolized in a way that gives us ATP. Moreover, if it were true that artificial sweeteners cause insulin secretion, people would get hypoglycemic by ingesting them.
As other comments have stated, people who drink diet soda tend to be people who are already overweight or gaining weight. Many overweight people replace part of their diet with regular soda and just get tons of sugar elsewhere to make up for it, thereby gaining no benefit from diet soda. If you were to go cold turkey on sugar in general, drinking diet beverages has no observable downsides. The **best** that we can say is that it **can** mess with your stomach flora. Also, many diet sodas can cause addictions... but only to diet soda.
There is no definitive evidence, and further research is needed to fully understand the relationship between the taste of sweetness and pancreatic responses. The hypothesis that tasting sweetness can elicit a reaction from the pancreas, specifically insulin release, has been explored in scientific research. Studies using low-energy sweeteners as tools to investigate the role of intestinal sweet-taste receptors in glucose absorption have shown that low-energy sweeteners can stimulate intestinal enteroendocrine cells to release glucagon-like peptide-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide, both of which play roles in insulin secretion. However, despite these findings, extensive in vivo studies in human subjects have not provided consistent evidence that low-energy sweeteners directly cause insulin release. As such, while the hypothesis has been investigated, the evidence does not conclusively support a direct link between tasting sweetness and insulin release by the pancreas. (Cited resources: Renwick, A. G., & Molinary, S. V. (2010). Sweet-taste receptors, low-energy sweeteners, glucose absorption and insulin release. I was starting to believe them until they said “Artificial sweeteners are 10s to 100s of Times sweeter than regular so when we taste it our brains anticipate more calories than we give it” I’m sorry but just because artificial sweeteners come more concentrated in their original state does not mean the soda manufacturers don’t dilute them. Such a simple concept that you guys blatantly over looked to make your videos seem more believable. You’re a science channel please get your facts right. If artificial sweeteners were used at the same weight in a soda recipe of course it would be WAY sweeter. You use less obviously.
Jawad Saleh The pancreatic beta cells receive numerous inputs in controlling insulin secretion. Blood sugar level is the most dominant one but hormonal and nervous input also plays a small part. But overall you are right the video is based on assumptions rather than scientific research. They are prematurely drawing a causal link from a correlation found in one study. Science should be more cautious than this. From my limited knowledge artificial sweeteners probably have a small anticipation based insulin release but insignificant to change the grand scheme of things
The only reason you would gain weight drinking diet soda is the increase in appetite. Control yourself and count your macros. Since these have 0 calories they won't attribute to weight gain. Only your lack of self control will do that.
My friend who used to drink Diet Pepsi all the time would occasionally have seizures and eye problems(He’s diabetic too). But one day I asked him maybe it’s the aspartame in that drink that’s doing that to you. I asked him to stop drinking it(which he did for 4 months.) and he never had another seizure or eye problems. Unfortunately he started to drink it again and with it came the seizures and eye problems. My mom told me to always stay away from that stuff because people she knew in the 70-80s got stick from that stuff as well.
Has your friend been diagnosed with phenylketonuria?. The symptoms sound like they are suffering from that. Those kind of folks should definitely avoid diet soda or anything with Aspartame in it.

I can easily tell diet soda from normal (Pepsi Zero for the win). It has a distinct taste. And I actually prefer it to the normal one. So now: Can my body tell the difference if I can?
Not to mention that aspartame in diet soda or aspartame in general breaks down into your body as ethyl alcohol and it builds up over time. Meaning the more you eat thing with aspartame, the closer you are to dying from methanol alochol poisoning Edit:fixed from ethyl to methanol alchohol
Please stop posting fake science. Alcohol is metabolized by several processes or pathways. The most common of these pathways involves two enzymes-alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). These enzymes help break apart the alcohol molecule, making it possible to eliminate it from the body. First, ADH metabolizes alcohol to acetaldehyde, a highly toxic substance and known carcinogen (1). Then, in a second step, acetaldehyde is further metabolized down to another, less active byproduct called acetate (1), which then is broken down into water and carbon dioxide for easy elimination (2). @World's Biggest Booty Hoes but their argument is that individuals who eat the same amount of calories, those on the diet soda gained more weight. I am skeptical of this study, so many variables with humans, sounds cruel but I think we should do studies on death row inmates who have agreed to do the study, and have stated that they were guilty of the crime that landed them in death row.

The issue here is that our bodies are kind of designed to deal with sugar, the artificial sweetener on the other hand tastes sweet the body responds by creating insulin cause it thinks its getting glucose when in a matter of fact it's not, so it wastes insulin, and either uses up all what's left in the body making you lose a little weight, but what can then happen is the body over produces insulin which can eventually lead to diabetes or something similar or the symptoms or lack of energy but that's not the worst part, the artificial chemicals replacing the sugar can build up in the liver and limit its functions to the point it actually causes a type of liver disease which can be fatal

your grandpa didn't drink water. so shut the F$ck up. my mother has been drinking diet soda for 10 years. nothing happened to her because she drinks water like a normal person.
Yeah, it sounds more like a problem that your grandpa only drank the diet Coke. It wasn't a problem with it being diet specifically, it was a problem with him not drinking any other beverage. He probably still would have had that problem if he was drinking only regular pop or only juice. Everyone needs to drink a variety of beverages, not just one type. People need water and your grandpa was dumb to not listen to the doctors on that note. He would have been allowed to still drink the diet coke if he drank water too. Unless the problem was with the carbonation, then he would have to never drink any fizzy beverages again. More likely is the fact that he only drank one beverage type.

I know that 85-90 of all soft drinks have become sugar-free, but on the other hand they are all full of sweeteners which do not even belong under food, but actually under chemicals, i.e. the sweetener Aspartame and Ampafarm are therefore undoubtedly not good for you and your nearest, and it may well be that you think it is healthier for you to buy food and soft drinks without sugar, and yes you may not take in as much etc. but no one knows the side effects in the long term yet, but since they are chemicals I will personally take my rules of proportion and not drink soft drinks if you contain those substances, maybe often called ZERO, and even fewer probably know about this, but ZERO actually means death ! Even when I buy an Original Pepsi, there are also sweet substances in it, and the original Dr. Pepper and many more also contain the sweeteners aspartame and aspartame... It's not to advertise Coca cola, but it's now one of the only good brands left, and where the original still only contains sugar and cola syrup... Unfortunately, the young people don't think about the fact that they might get hit later in life with cancer, and it can affect their unborn child/children because they pour those substances into themselves as bad habits! But Cult, Mønster or Rock-star energy drinks are 95% or more without sugar, so you have to look for a long time to find a completely normal energy drink with sugar and without all the synthetic sweeteners! Think about the next generation and how these sweeteners affect young pregnant women or the new born child! ASPARTAME & ASPAFAM “IS A TOXIC SWEETENER WHICH YOU SHOULD AVOID AT ALL COSTS WHEN BUYING SOFT DRINKS!

In the case that the mold was dangerous. After I realized I tasted that weird flavor I immediately threw the sandwich to the trash.
just because something is 10k x sweeter than sugar doesn't mean your body expectes 10k times the amount of calories. The artificial sweetener will just be used less to arrive at something that is close to the "normal" level of sweetness.
I got a diet soda addiction and its my only pleasure in life because well not 21 yet so thats sad, iv lost quite a bit of weight even when drinking diet soda. You just gotta stick to a certain set of meals a day and make sure you eat portionally and not refill your plate.
The problem with diet soda is that it's not as simple as correlating diet soda with a health problem. Many studies seem to conclude people who do drink diet soda may be more inclined to certain health problems but the drink itself doesn't appear to have anything that would make these symptoms appear. Could it be that long term diet soda causes these issues or could it be that the person has other lifestyle choices along with the diet soda. The larger problem is that corporations like Cola and Pepsi tend to have a lot of money. And throughout their history, they've been known to pay out money to have their product look better. Even the government (like FDA, CDC, etc) is not to be trusted because it's a sure bet these companies can pay these individuals. Pepsi, for example, got their hold in the market by falsifying grocery store tests on what tastes better. Cola got into their market by putting addictive chemicals (like cocaine) in their drinks to get people hooked. What's stopping them from doing a modern day version of it?
As a diet soda enthusiast and intermittent fasting disciple, the only time I get cravings is when I didn't get the right quantity of food for a meal. I'm essentially on a 1 snack, 1 meal daily regimen with no cheat days.
A proper academic paper is needed to prove that tasting sweetness can trigger insulin release.

I can taste the difference yet he assumes everyone’s answer is no
If someone actually can't taste the different between regular and an artificially sweetened sodas, they might have some other issues.
It’s all the same artificially flavored crap

And the taste of “sweetness” does not triggers insulin release. False claim again
Bunk science and cherry-picked science does more harm than good
I'm surprised a channel called "Science Insider" would play it so fast and loose with a topic like this - one where the scientific data is lacking and disputed.
Could you please share the studies/literature you base your video on?
I dont know about this..... why woupd something that has 0 carbs trigger diabetes qnd metabolic problems versus soda with real sugar?
“Can you tell the difference between regular and diet soda?” -Yes Actually-, I’m sure I’m not the only one, but sugar alcohols - and heck even stuff like stevia - has a disgusting lingering flavor :P It’s sweet, yeah, but it *totally* alters the actual flavor of something. It probably helps that I only really drink Root Beer when I have soda since the flavor difference is so obvious, but even with Coca Cola it’s the difference between an okay drink and suspected poisoning for me lol.
I'm so glad i was able to check your sources document :)
they lied to us
they played us like a damn fiddle!
We've been been tricked, we've been backstabbed, and even possibly bamboozled.
lol
Don’t forget you’ve had ur Thomas tank pants pulled down 😂 😜
I'd expect a channel called science insider to know more about science.
yes
2:39 lol, why are veggies and vegan cheese bad all of a sudden
Because vegans are bad...
whut ugh. Not all vegans are vegans by choice.
_Random Person_ What?
Vegans are awesome. I'm not a vegan but those who do it for ethical reasons are pretty brave for following their heart.
Weird Person Man Thing. It’s true, I’m not vegan by choice, I have a medical condition where I can’t eat animal products since they contain too much protein, or something similar, I don’t remember but it had too much of something so I can’t eat it, my mom also has this condition
I hate the sound of zooming flies so much ugh
I've drink pepsi max in my 4 hour eating window of intermittent fasting like constantly, every single day. All my bloods our perfect and I've lost 3 stone this year alone. It definitely hasn't hindered my weight loss one single bit. And I don't rely on it either. it just depends on the individual if it is going to spike your insulin or not. So many studies have shown this. And no diet drink with raises blood sugar either 🤷♂️
It doesn’t mean it won’t catch up to you eventually
The only good trick drink a diet coke for a dinner thats it and at most do this 1 time a week just to have 1 day lower in calories and then the rest of the week dont drink any soda just water ect
Guess I’m drowning my stomach with water now!
I feel like filling my belly with this stuff, as well as smoking weed and playing Burnout Revenge on the PS2.
Did anyone else swat the air when the fly came?
They quoted a study where they had someone drink 21 “diet” drinks in one week…? That’s more than I’ve had in the past 6-12 months…
You are probably a healthy person? :) For many unhealthy people addicted to soda - 21 drinks a week is nothing. I know so many families who can easily drink a liter a day - each person. It’s disgusting.
It is absolutely addicting to some people and they drink nothing else so 21 a week is easy.
Meaning the more you eat thing with aspartame, the closer you are to dying from methanol alochol poisoning
Edit:fixed from ethyl to methanol alchohol
Nice video content! Excuse me for chiming in, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you ever tried - Taparton Impressive Look Takeover (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is an awesome one of a kind product for getting rid of your embarrassing man boobs without the hard work. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my close friend Aubrey at very last got cool success with it.
Mmmm yesss
hiIiII
Yes
Thanks for linking the sources!
0:55 I doubt that. If artificial sweeteners cased insulin response you would feel really fatigue every time you drink diet soda without food.
Walmarts Clear American gives me massive Brain Fog
100% ever since I started drinking Pepsi max a few years ago I put on weight and struggle to lose it.
Same with me. Ive been off pepsi max for 8 days now and drink only water and hot tea and i feel my blubber has decreased.
And i lost weight while drinking it
You probably ate a shit ton of food but thought that drinking diet coke makes it healthy
Funny cause I drink literally everyday and have great blood pressure and 55 BPM on rest being 26 years old. 0 alcohol, 0 drugs, 0 smoking.
You just explained my brother's weight problem. Thank you, we've been trying to figure it out and help him diet. You just solved our problem. (Hopefully) I'll report the results of taking him off of diet soda later. Thanks in advance!
It's all about staying in a coloric defisit
Don't let him use splenda either
No, the literal molecules do not even get processed. And artificial sweeteners have NEVER been shown to illicit an insulin response. Just stop feeding the kid.
Diets don’t work. Just exercise and eat healthy. Don’t go for those like only eating blank and blank diets. It’s legit just portioning yourself. So eat what ever you want but in moderation.
But what is the rest of his diet like? If he eats too much food that’s high fat and high calorie That will explain his weight problem.
Calories in, calories out. Period. You're not gonna turn into a fat ass drinking diet soda.........
EXACTLY!!
Guess matpat from game theory is doomed
I used to drink 4 liters of Pepsi max a day(i know it's a lot) i stopped drinking it from from one day to the next, after 2 days i got massive headaches general discomfort and unwillingness. after some time passed i felt better.
Before i stopped drinking diet soda i was on keto for a month i ate everything i was suppose to eat and i still never lost a single pound it was only after that month i cut out diet soda and then i finally started to lose weight. So yes i 100% believe that diet soda prevents weight loss( even though i don't have the data to back it up) take my word for it or don't i just wanna share my knowledge of what happened to me. :)
4 liters is like 12 cans of pop every day. 12 cans is a lot.
bruh 4 liters is insane
I think you're just a fatass
Everything is bad when you’re not within moderation. 4 liters of most drinks is overkill.
So I'm almost 53, still weight 145 like 30 years ago, and when I drink soda it's only diet, and my blood pressure is 78/118. Don't think diet soda is that bad.
Don't drink soda - problem solved. If you want something sweet - mix honey with water :)
My dentist told me to consume a minimal amount of sugar.
Before I watched this video, it was going great. I just replaced regular soda with diet soda and didn't think anything of it.
After watching this video, I have learned one thing:
*You can't win.*
"studies studies studies" Where are the sources ??
Short anwser: you'd die
long anwser: it depends
From kurtz?
For a science channel mentioning specific studies maybe you should consider citing your sources? Maybe a bibliography at the end?
We should sow dis to MatPat lol
Exactly

"Can you tell the difference between regular and diet soda?"
- Yes!
"Turns out, neither can your body."
- Huh? What?!
Lol a research and a research. Next time give us more details about the researches so we can judge by ourselves if your video tell us true or you just want to manipulate us. I ``research`` says that God exists. Spread it!

My teacher got addicted to diet drinks and had to go cold turkey because they were making him ill. We all had an assembly about it and how aspartame is bad bad bad.
This is bullshit .. I went on a diet .. I only drank cola zero .. And i lost 12 kiloz .. U might argue and say i lost it because of eating less , but my response is . even if thats the case , im a person who drinks 2 liters of soda a day , and thats exactly why i switched to diet soda cuz i knew it played a big part in why i gain weight : so if diet soda really causes weight gain- according to the video- why did i not get fat while drinking two liters a day of diet coke for three months? -.- .. Im sorry u sound scientific and all but id rather believe materialist ic results that i found myself instead of something as "fragile" unstable and delusional as a research .
You are still putting chemicals into your body instead of sugar
@@user-zc3nn2nx2u the chemical structure or sugar is C12H22O11 ... There is no evidence that I have seen that drinking diet soda does any harm to a person, I wouldn't suggest one use an IV of it, best argument against diet soda that I can find is water is cheaper. Bottoms up my friend
I was wearing headphones and when the fly started buzzing at the end I legit turned my head thinking there was a really loud fly by my head
Iam going to turn into soda
Hi! Which studies in particular was this video based on? I would like to read those articles for myself. Thx in advance!
This theory may be true but for type 1 diabetics like myself this doesn’t apply 🤠!
I don’t know about you but I’d be happy with veggies and vegan cheese lmao not much of a let down to me sounds pretty delicious actually🤤 😋
I'm glad I watched this, no longer drinking anything with aspartame in it
Ever Since I can remember I saw my Uncle drinking coke. Since about ten years ago he started diet coke. He only drinks diet coke never water, Milk or anything else. He often complained of abdominal pain, went to doctors. But he was never satisfied with the reason they gave him (they told him to drink water because he seemed healthy everywhere else). He always made it into a joke. Everyone Tried to convince him, he never did and got angry every time. He ended up in emergency last year. Lol it seems like only when it’s too late people repent. They told him he had Gastrointestinal perforation because of the Diet Coke. But idiots will still not believe, you can never convince them. Let them try for themselves and if there are enough cases we can save some future idiots
your grandpa didn't drink water. so shut the F$ck up. my mother has been drinking diet soda for 10 years. nothing happened to her because she drinks water like a normal person.
@@elisemelinn9176 I salute you.
How old was he when he ended up in emergency?
@@Patrick.Bateman666 Probaby around 50, so took him ages
I buy and drink a 330ml diet pepsi from the local corner shop after work, I’d say approximately 4 days a week. Is that enough to be harmful? For context I’m 16, 150cm, 52kg. Toned but not jacked.
What if i only drank pee
Do try to get the pee from diet soda drinkers.
'What too much diet soda does to your body and brain'
They both tell me that it taste _GOOOOD_
One should has to intake a healthy diet daily then there will be no need to take this
Ansari Al well done Sherlock
i've been drinking diet soda for the last year and i lost 15 pounds but also gain some big checks and now i realised that it was because diet soda :(
What are big checks?
Not liking Diet Coke is just an excuse to drink regular Coke.
And then some fat people say Diet tastes so gross lol
"Neither can your body" ??? Who the F can't tell the difference between diet soda and regular?
1:45 if you drank 21 diet beverages a week there's a high possibility that they didn't have a healthy diet anyways... this has so many other factors and over 8 years only double the probability? it seems like an unreliable study to show any direct correlation between them.
i m watching this with having diet soda 😢
ASPARTAME & ASPAFAM “IS A TOXIC SWEETENER WHICH
YOU SHOULD AVOID AT ALL COSTS WHEN BUYING SOFT DRINKS!
the fly noise actually made me think that there was a fly in the room and I was SHOOK
I'm very proud of the comment section for noting how speculative and baseless this video's implications are.
I hope they do studies regarding Stevia and Monkfruit sweeteners
Hey techinsider can you cite the studies you base your arguments on??
I'm curious if diet sodas affect the viscosity of our blood like energy drinks do...
My dad is diabetic but very stubborn, we switched to diet coke about 3 weeks ago so we could keep drinking sodas without the sugar BUT how now i tell him he cant even drink that, i will just get yelled at
Some days ago I didn't know I took a bit in a bread that had a really small part of green thingies, the thing is how much does a mold take to do some damage to my body? In the case that the mold was dangerous. After I realized I tasted that weird flavor I immediately threw the sandwich to the trash.
just because something is 10k x sweeter than sugar doesn't mean your body expectes 10k times the amount of calories. The artificial sweetener will just be used less to arrive at something that is close to the "normal" level of sweetness.
I hate how they are replacing all the fizzy drinks with sweetened versions in the UK just to comply with sugar tax. Sweeteners taste disgusting
I drank ONE diet coke and had a upset stomach like never before, and I rarely get upset stomachs.
Can you please link to the studies that you are basing this video on?
I don't crave sugar from diet pepsi, it in fact help me overcome my sugar addiction.. am I the only one who can't relate ?
