  • There is a lot of advice out there about how to get the best night of sleep. But the fact that you can't sleep might not be your fault. It turns out, night owls have an internal clock that functions differently. Forcing them to wake up early could have serious health consequences.

Following is a transcript of the video:
There is plenty of advice for how to improve your sleep. Go to bed at the same time. Avoid digital screens after dark. And don’t hit snooze. But it all comes down to the same assumption: That YOU’RE doing something wrong. When, in fact, it may not be your fault, at all.
Inside practically every organism on Earth there’s a clock that keeps order. Known as the circadian rhythm. For humans, it’s located in the part of our brains called the hypothalamus. And while it’s most famous for controlling our sleep cycles… it’s also responsible for helping primary organs like the brain, heart, and lungs, work in harmony. But not everyone’s circadian rhythm is the same. Night owls, for instance, generally feel tired later than early birds. Often because they produce high amounts of the sleep hormone, melatonin, later at night.
And for most of human history that didn’t matter - since night owls could protect their tribes from nocturnal predators or their cities from cunning conquerors - but society has MADE it a problem in recent decades. An estimated 80% of Americans follow daily schedules that fall between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Yet, nearly a third of the population considers themselves night owls. Which means they’d be better off with a schedule that looks more like this. This phenomenon is called social jetlag. It’s like the jetlag you feel after a long plane trip… but worse because it doesn’t disappear after a few days.
And social jetlag is taking its toll on night owls of the world. Because, even if you get the recommended amount of sleep… knocking your circadian rhythm out of whack has consequences. For example, one study found that for every hour your circadian rhythm is out of syn …your risk of obesity increases by 33%. Also increasing your risk of the many health complications associated with obesity. And the problem isn’t just a physical one. In another study, people whose circadian rhythms were more than 2 hours off… reported notably more severe symptoms of depression.
And since your circadian rhythm tends to shift as you age… social jetlag is especially apparent in teens. In fact, the CDC warns that most public schools across America start too early, before 8:30. Which, according to the nonprofit “Rand Corporation,” is costing the country $9 billion a year from mainly lost academic performance and car crashes from tired teens behind the wheel. Luckily, the circadian rhythm isn’t set in stone. Turns out, it’s largely triggered by light signals that strike your eye. So, when you first wake up, get outside and soak up some morning sun… or if that’s out of the question, make sure your home is well lit. It might just brighten your morning a little more.

Waking early is a constant struggle every day, same as going to bed early. My preferred time is waking up around 10AM and going to bed at 2AM. I just feel more alive and creative at night.

But after jumping between a couple of jobs that've been 7/8-4 schedules, my creative drive is just gone. Man I cant wait til late August when my employment ends to feel alive again!

I make games in my spare time, my power zone for development is from about 5pm till 2am...in that zone it will take 1-2 shots to get something right, the math is simple, everything makes sense. Out of that zone i'm wondering "wtf was i thinking last night?" and "why does this work again?".
In the mean time i have to do my day job(i now make meat smallgoods) which requires a 4:30 am wake up, so i spend my days walking around in a haze working in default/automatic mode that's just enough thought to get the job done, then come the weekend i'm excited to go back to awake mode only to need to reset again sunday for mondays work.

I tried changing my sleep schedule to go to bed at 10 pm and wake up at 6 am, even during weekends, and I managed to keep it for 6 months. I felt constantly tired despite getting around 7-8 hours of sleep. After my summer break started, it took me less than a week to naturally change my sleep schedule back to going to bed at 2-3 am and waking up at around 10-11 am. I’m sure stress and other stuff are factors too, but I feel way more refreshed and energized every day when I wake up late. I feel genuinely motivated to do things like working out and learn new skills/improve my skills. Working out felt like a chore when waking up early, now it’s enjoyable. Everything just feels better and less tiring.

My husband is quite clearly a night owl, while I'm quite clearly an early bird. It gets a bit challenging sometimes, because at night, when he's feeling more active is when I start to shut down completely. It has positives too though. I wake up early and can have those few minutes of peace and quiet when I tidy up the house and listen to the silence. I get to wake him up every day with caresses and kisses and see him get drowsy the next minute. Very cute.

Interesting side info: It looks like things such as high intelligence and also things like ADHD are sometimes associated to being a night owl. One reason: The night is overall less loaded with distractions, interruptions and the sensory load is lower. That facilitates the process of introspection and pondering. Particularly to us ADHD people, lower sensory load and low risk of stuff like phone calls and social inquiries are super helpful. Plus Dr.K from HealthyGamer explained there's a chemical component of it, too, that I cannot explain as well as he did. But the gist of it is, that we have a certain range in which "doing stuff" is possible and when we start to ge tired, that's when our ability to function gets more. Which makes a great load of sense to me, cause my brain is racing to the point I'm not doing stuff, so once it's a little bit tired and slows down, I get to function cause that is out of the way XD.

Funny when you ask all of these “night owls” what they actually do during the night it’s never things like reading a book or sports. There’s always a common denominator…
And it so happens that it’s the ONE thing that stops melatonin production…
Gee, I guess it means nothing, I’m just born like that 🤡. If I’m obese it’s because of my metabolism! I did nothing wrong! Also even if i did being obese means high iq (it was revealed to me in a dream)

Finding out that I actually am not just a nightowl, but that the reason for that also has a name: Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome has done miracles for me. My entire life, I felt like there was something wrong with me, as I like to stay up until the early morning houts, and only get up when most people are having lunch... But when I heard about DSPS, and that it is actually a 'thing', it felt like a load fell off my shoulders. So many people have this, and it is not 'wrong' as they tried to convince me. I am also more productive and creative late at night, so I am very greatful also that I am my own boss and can live by my own rythm. It took a while for my friends and family to 'accept' my lifestyle, but they got used to it, and now they know it is part of me. For all you fellow DSPS out there! Hang in there, now you 'know', life will be so much better!

I have been a night owl my whole life and it sucks that society tries to force us to go against our natural circadian rhythm. I'm far more alert and focused at night and that's when my creativity is at an all-time high. For years I've forced myself to get up early for school/work and it only leaves me exhausted and unable to accomplish anything. I also can't fall asleep early because my body simply refuses, doesn't matter how exhausted I am the second I try to go to bed too early my body says "nope, you're not allowed to sleep right now" and thus I am forced to toss and turn all night. I hate the mornings and wish I could just work the schedule that fits with my natural circadian rhythm but alas unless I become a millionaire or somehow become my own boss it ain't gonna happen.

Doesn't matter if I've taken sleeping pills, if I've only gotten 3 hours of sleep in the past 36 hours, or if I genuinely feel tired right around 8pm or 10pm and try to get to sleep. That brain just PINGS me up at 11pm. lol

I always had to get up at 6 for school and it was miserable. I could barely stay awake all day or pay attention to anything, I'm honestly surprised I didn't get yelled at for not paying attention or (almost) falling asleep in class. Felt like I was always behind and I was always missing things. When I got home around 4 though I sprang to life and became completely wired and full of energy the rest of the day, and that persisted when it was time to go to sleep. It usually took me forever to fall asleep and I always hated having to go to bed because I'd just be laying there wide awake waiting to eventually fall asleep. Then again comes morning and I can barely get out of bed because I'm completely zombified once again, always feeling like garbage as long as I'm at school
Not sure if it's because I'm a night owl, being forced to sleep and wake up much earlier than I should be, or I just really hate school so much that the thought of school saps all my energy, and getting out of school fills me with renewed vigor. Probably the second option. Either way once I was out of school and could sleep whenever I want, I magically felt 1000 times better and stopped hating life. funny how miserable school is and almost everyone hates it, yet the school system thinks it's fine and depression builds character or something

If I could choose my own schedule I’d sleep 1am to 10am. Work 12-8pm, and then stay in and get shit done. But you know… kids, work, life. I plan to live my ideal schedule in retirement. Or at least until my kids can get themselves sorted in the morning. Which is about 10 years away lol

Dante Redgrave I’m a night owl currently in school still, and it really doesn’t help at all. I work a lot better during the evenings and gain motivation and ideas to do things and think “Okay, I’ll do this after school or in the morning.” Then I wake up an hour or so before school to get ready, don’t get enough time, feel drowsy at school, don’t work as best I do at night, get home and instantly want to sleep. I’m hoping that when I can, I’ll try to get or find a good job that works with my best working hours and sleep schedule and work up to that. I’d rather be happy and feel like I’m not even doing work than stress about it so much just to have the money.

I feel more creative and productive at night then I do in the day. Even when I try to fix my sleep schedule to wake up in the day, I get so sleepy unable to stay awake. Or even just sleep a few hours in the night and wake up before midnight and unable to sleep again. It’s a struggle since “life” is supposed to be in the day and sleep for the night but I just can’t get myself to stay awake in the day. And I know some people will say go exercise or you need sun but I have tried that for weeks and still. It drives me insane because my family won’t leave me alone about it.

I've been a night owl since I was about 9 years old, and I'm 31 now. Forcing myself to go to bed between 9pm and 11pm has always been super tough for me, and, even if I manage to fall asleep and stay asleep for 8-9 hours, I feel terrible the next day.
If I go to bed between 11pm and 1am, even if I only get 5-6 hours of sleep, I wake up feeling great, completely refreshed. But, because I prefer to sleep about 7-9 hours and that means waking up between 8am and 10am, people call me lazy because I'm waking up later than others.
I hate that it's so hard to live like a normal person (waking up between 5am and 7am to make it to work or school on time), and, when I go against my natural circadian rhythm to wake up at these times in order to function in the rest of society, I'm so sluggish that people think I'm a ditz.
It's crazy to think how much just a couple hours out of sync can effect all other aspects of normal living. Thankfully I'm not depressed or anything, but it's frustrating. Coffee helps no matter what though lol

    • @ThePurpleMenace
      @ThePurpleMenace 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Beatriz Haddad Ordones the coffee thing is honestly the most reliable method I've found to adapt and function, so until I finish up my degree and can land a career that can sync with my body's natural circadian rhythm (or somehow make a proper living from my hobbies of writing and illustration, both fine pursuits for a night owl), it'll have to do for now.
I've basically delegated myself to the reality that if I wanna sleep well, I can't work a normal 9-5 gig or maintain a typical school schedule. If I want to get shit done and have a normal life while also caring for my son (I'm also a single mom), I just have to take the hit to my mental and physical health by going against my circadian rhythm and use coffee to fill in the gaps.
Plus I read somewhere coffee is good for preventing cancer or something, so there's that lol

Scott Telting I've been travelling between the USA and Europe for the past 2-3 years (8-9 hour time difference), nursed my infant son when he was a newborn every 2-3 hours for months at a stretch, and have had several full-time jobs ranging in schedules from 3pm to midnight (which was absolutely perfect for me), to doing clinical credit hours at a hospice for my nursing degree that varied from 3am to 3pm and 6am to noon one day and 11am to 6pm the next.
I don't think I'll ever get a regular sleep schedule unless I give up everything and wind up as some kind of eccentric billionaire living on a remote island.
Coffee = decent compromise for existing as a non-billionaire night owl living in an early bird's world 😂

I briefly had a job where I had to work overnight shifts. It was my first time, working from 9:30pm-6am and holy crap was it absolutely wonderful!
It took my body no adjustment whatsoever to get used to that schedule. I was full of energy most of the night, feeling very creative and active, and I was just starting to feel tired around 5am, which is (not) coincidentally the toughest time for me to get up. I got home around 6:20am and had the best sleep of my life.

Precisely. I know they want us to get up instead of pressing "snooze", but *we're pressing it for a reason.* There have been times when having multiple alarms in the same hour have saved me because I thought _for sure_ I was about to get up, not realizing my eyes were still closed as I made that decision. Within 10 seconds, I was asleep again before I even realized. Thankfully, the next alarm woke me up, made me realize I had somehow fallen asleep again, and made me panic enough at the time to wake me up just enough to get me out of bed. "Snooze" is the only good thing about an alarm...

In high school I spent the first period half asleep, and I got C-B average grades and wasn’t ambitious in choosing classes. Later I went to community college and I had better control over when my classes started, so I started class often between 10 A.M to 1 P.M and my grades shot up to As, after that I was able to transfer to a prestigious 4-year university, but being a transfer student puts you at certain disadvantages when getting opportunities to work with professors.

I’ve always been a night owl in a family of all morning birds. Even as a kid I’d wake up at 9AM (shockingly late I know) and my sisters who woke up at 6AM would relentlessly tease me and call me lazy for waking up at 9AM. Now I want to wake up early, but I just can’t. If I go to sleep at a normal time, I’ll wake up within 3 hours and feel perfectly rested. I’ll often feel motivated to get things done and energized for the next few hours then I’ll go back to sleep and wake up at about 9AM. I had to wake up at 6AM for school as a teen and it was completely miserable because even without a nap I was unable to go to bed before midnight. There was just no melatonin flowing and melatonin supplements make me super lightheaded instead of sleepy. If my school didn’t start at 7AM I probably wouldn’t have been such a miserable kid lmaoo

If that works out I wake up with such a perfect mood, I feel completely refreshed and have lots and lots of energy for my day. I often work on university stuff in the evening or at night, I feel very productive during this time. I am very glad that my courses start rather late at the day so I can still keep that sleep schedule but I am worried for later when I will have to work - though my field seems to be a bit more lenient when it comes designing your own work hours luckily, in all my student jobs I was able to start rather late (compared to the norm) and work until later in the evening too, that worked out perfectly and I was very productive.

Just yesterday, I felt too tired to do anything all day and then when it hit 12 AM, I suddenly felt the need to start organizing my bookshelf. There was this burst of energy, which I often get most nights. There are times when I'm wide awake in bed wanting to get up and do the laundry or get some work done. I live in a college dorm with classes that start(ed) around noon every day. My schedule has been like this for months:
Go to sleep after the sun rises (about 4 hours)
Wake up and go to class(es), then eat a big meal at like 3-5pm (since I only eat one proper meal a day because the dining hall isn't open when I'm awake)
Go back to dorm and crash until 9pm
Be up until the sun rises again
It's currently almost 6am, I've been watching TH-cam (as you can see), and I have a final exam in 4 hours. What am I doing and why?????

I have always been what I've dubbed a "split sleep"-er; I sleep in two smaller chunks (4 hours here, 4 hours there, up for the rest) instead of one large chunk (over night). I'm not sure where it started or why, but ever since I started it in HS, I've never been happier.
I usually sleep somewhere close to 3am-7am and loosely 6pm-10pm. My daughter has school from 8am-3pm and bed by 8pm, my ex works 5am-5pm.
It works with my work schedule and daughters school schedule (her dad watches her for the evening sleep), I get stuff done while everyone else is asleep, I feel more calm and can take my time.
I don't want to directly associate it with my ADHD, but I specifically feel more... "in tune" with myself? I get time to myself, work on my own things at my pace, not overstimulated, do things I've been putting off during the day, etc.
There's a calm to the "the whole city is asleep" vibe I get in the middle of the night. I can't explain it.
Night Owls are lazy or "broken," we just work different haha.
(Also, I know I'm not technically a night owl since I split sleep, but i feel the best in the middle of the night.)

Always been a night owl, and it became necessary after my sensitivity to sunlight became more prominent, especially in my eyes where i cant tolerate bright light as it gives me headaches or forces me to sleep. Can also get 2nd degree sunburn after an hour. Have worked jobs and shifts which require early starts, and it kills me. I work night shift now (3 years), and i dont have to set an alarm to wake up anymore. I will never be a day person, and im in my mid 30’s.

I think it's good to figure out exactly what your clock is.
I assumed I was a night owl for a pretty long time, staying up well past midnight on my computer, playing games alone or with other night owl friends. I laughed at the idea of getting up early every day and proclaimed the calm of night to be the best time of the day, since the world was mostly asleep. If I *did* get up early, I was wrecked. Barely functional. A big problem since I had a job that started at 7am half the week. I was wrecked all the time. I used to have nights where I couldn't sleep because I knew I had to be up soon, and the pressure kept me awake.
One day when I was around 30 I flew home from a trip where I'd gotten used to the local time (several zones away). When I got back the 8-9am wakeup I was enjoying overseas became 4-5am. I found the early morning to be a strangely enjoyable time (even more peaceful than the late night, with the slowly awakening birds and the sunrise) and decided not to adjust back to the local time. I've been living that way for almost a decade now - early to bed, early to rise. 9pm-4-5am is an ideal night for me. It was a massive improvement almost overnight. I'm tired by 9, go to bed with *ample* time to get a full night's sleep, and wake up several hours before I need to leave for work. I don't have to rush through the morning routine. I enjoy a leisurely breakfast and have time to go for a walk, prepare for the day and even get in some gaming.
It turns out I was a morning person and just never allowed myself to experience that lifestyle properly so I could find out. It's great never having trouble falling asleep anymore. I *hated* tossing and turning, mentally beating myself up for not falling asleep when I had to be up in 4 hours. If by chance my night's sleep wasn't great, I can sleep in for an hour or two without it affecting my schedule.
I think everyone who is convinced they aren't a morning person should try it during a week or two off from work - they might be surprised. Or, if it doesn't work, then they know for sure and can hopefully be motivated to adjust their lifestyle to be night-compatible.

I am a night owl, and I remember when I became one. When I was in kindergarten, I used to love the morning. But something changed after I started school, and as I progressed to higher grade levels, it became very clear to me that I was a night owl. School, then college, and then work became hell on Earth because my body was just not timed to get up early. And even when I was exhausted, when I went to bed early in order to catch up on sleep, I was the most awake I had been all day. I eventually developed severe depression and panic attacks to the point that I could no longer work, and that has been a difficult circumstance as well.

It is NOT TRUE that you can just adjust your circadian rhythm. I tried to fight my natural biology my entire life. I'm now 50 years old & STILL feel more awake late at night. It is rare that I go to sleep before 2am and I can sleep soundly in a room flooded with light. I've never had a weight problem - always been thin. I'm pretty happy with my life & not depressed at all. I hate that the world revolves around wake-at-dawn schedules, why can't a 24-hr economy adjust to those of us who prefer to work at night? I'm done trying to fight my biology for this archaic schedule in the age of the Internet when anything can get done at any time of day or night! :D
