I get the feeling Williamson had a lot of problems staying onboard his ship.

Or he had a hard time keeping passengers from jumping overboard....

I was teaching my crew this manoeuvre.
I demanded it first ((with a buoy) in the water.
    Helmsman, no problem.
Then I called the chief engineer to practise.
Being German, he said, “Why I need to know this? I don’t care if you fall overboard “.
I said, “Who will command the ship?”
His answer, “We will figure that that without you” 😳

Fun fact, the Williamson Turn was actually developed by Lieutenant John A. Williamson when he was head of the Seamanship and Antisubmarine Warfare departments at the US Navy's Sub-Chaser Training School in 1942. He had just called it "man overboard for night and low visibility," but people started calling it the Williamson Turn and the name stuck. Williamson was also the XO and later captain of the destroyer escort USS England, which earned the Presidential Unit Citation for sinking 6 Japanese submarines in a 12-day period during May 1944.

Ah. It is very much the same as an 80/260 procedure turn used in instrument flight.

This would not work if they were steaming in a convoy as other ships would be in danger
