So you girls just did a video showing the proper way to call in Securite/Pan Pan/ and May Day calls and I shared it to my wife, friends, and my son and nephew. The next day after watching that I was stung in the foot by a sting ray in Beaufort,NC.My wife called 911 to report it ,as we still had cell service ,but I was feeling very dizzy at this point .By the time we walked back to the boat and got the kids and wife on I was feeling faint and she couldn’t tell them where we were or where the closest spot was from our position because she never really runs the boat, I do.My nephew and son remembered what your video taught us about Various call and what channel to use so they turned to Ch.16 and hailed Coast Guard. They were able to get me to a ambulance quickly and to the hospital where I had the barb removed and stayed for a few hours.Thank you so much for that video and thank you for putting out quality videos. It’s possible that your video saved my life as I had a allergic reaction to the venom and almost lost consciousness so I couldn’t help them much at that time.I just wanted to let you know how much your safety videos do and that I truly thank you for doing it.(P.S. I just bought the stickers your offering for any future mishaps).Talk soon and tight lines!!!!
I'm a Crew member for Marine Rescue New South Wales in Australia. We use the Anderson turn in all our drills. You explained it and performed it very well in your clip. Great job guys
Guys , i have been boating for over 40 years and in reality you do not pay attention to a situation that can happen without warning . I learned a lot on this video . Thank you for posting it. You girls are the best .
The Williamson Turn is the same turn that we use in flying for shooting approaches. We call it a Procedure Turn. Crop dusters use the same turn for spraying and just move over a bit each time to cover the field.
this is great, as well as the last one regarding radio. keep in mind a stuffed float with a float is going to drift with the wind, not current. a human will drift more with tides and ocean currents.
I made my boating license in Greece and here they teach people to turn around and approach the moan over board form downwind and stop about a boat length short so that the wind pushes the person towards the boat. This way we minimize the chance of hitting the person with the boat.
Actually, a stopped boat (due to her windage area) is affected more from the wind than a man at sea. So, if you are not pretty close to the MOB, the wind will push you away from him/her as soon as you stop the boat. It would be preferable to keep the MOB on the leeward side of the boat. By doing this, even if you are not exactly where the person is, the wind will push you towards him (if you are parallel of him) plus the fact that the wind will help you throw him one more life buoy in case he didn't get the first one. In addition, you stand like a shield from the wind for him/her by reducing the waves towards him.
Also after pressing the mob button, sound 5 to 6 short blast. Determine if you need to make a direct or indirect approach based off consciousness. Make sure vessel is in neutral and sitting at 0 knots. Crewmember could also communicate with coxswain using boat nomenclature while pointing "He is at STBD Bow, STBD beam, throttle down, neutral." But this is great info!
I was an officer in the merchant navy so application to bigger ships. Williamson turn when you don't see the person go overboard. Anderson when you see them and can react straight away.
The drone footage was invaluable. Well done. Perhaps mentioning a strong current or winds would also be informative? I grew up water skiing and we would always pick up a downed skier on the downwind side - makes recovery MUCH easier as they are drifting toward the boat. Wish you guys could bottle your enthusiasm so you could sell it and have your engines painted!
Great video as always! In Greece we learn a variant of the Anderson turn, but with a twist... Turn the wheel to the direction of the victim, make a full turn, and place the boat between the wind/current and the MOB so they will not drift away. Throw them the ring and drag them on board. No use of hooks. Still, if there is no other person on board apart from the captain to save the man, always approach from the helm side. (If the helm is on one side and not in the center!) Nice job girls! Stay safe!
Your channel is invaluable. Especially for a new boater like me. I so appreciate the time, effort and energy you guys put into your informative videos. I love the overhead drone video in this one showing the turn as you're describing it. Great work ladies.
Love this video. Explanation, graphics and live demo with drone is invaluable! though... lookout should have had eyes on MOB & communicating with skipper throughout.
Let’s keep it simple. Prior to launching the vessel., let your passengers know that they will be brought in by gaff if they fall overboard. Problem solved😉🤷♂️. Question though:Is there a difference in maneuvering whether the passenger falls out from the bow vs stern in say a 50 foot vessel?
You kids have so much fun, even on a serious lesson as this one. Great video to train my grandson with as he loves being on the water. Do you have an episode that explains what you should do if you are the one overboard. I'll have to look that up. If not you two would make a great pair for that.
In this simulation you have all the time in the world to get the boat turned around and headed back to the MOB location. In a non-simulated event the man (or woman) overboard may not be wearing a life jacket AND cannot swim. Then the acronym "DOA" might be appropriate unless you whip your boat around at or near full throttle and bear down on the MOB location ASAP, and throw anything that can float at the person thrashing about in the water. If it looks like the person is struggling to get air I would jump in after them. Anything that would cut the time to rescue trumps all other procedures.
In the tradition of warnings on coffee cups stating that its "hot" liquid... Just remember not to reach for a real MOB with the gaff! 😉👍 (Unless you don't like them)
My biggest fear is being out on an inflatable unicorn swan when there's a shark circling. So which turn did you use when a Gale Force Twin fell overboard whilst picking up her anchor ball? Manny F.
This is one of the best drills ever! We learned in a live "test" on our first sail on our sailboat. A friend and his wife that were helping us on our maiden voyage decided to stand up and flop his butt over the rail. As he said it he asked" how are you gonna save me".... I hit him as soon as he came above the water with a throw cushion, dumped the sails and had a line to him in 45 seconds. It was like I already knew what to do.....
I am a man and have been accused of being overboard for many years. So aparently i need rescueing by professionals and would appreciate you guys coming to my rescue. Since tgis may be a life and death ordeal i would be truly greatful for a prompt response. Oh SUGAR, a school of sharks coming. Phew! My bad, just a pack of disgruntled karens. Hello? HELLO? Oh dear!! Maybe i should just sing for a while. " nobody loves me everybody hates me i think I'll eat some worms............
I'm doing my coxswain exam on Friday. But his confused me, need fail me if I hit astern, according to our training we have to go idle in approach, once reached hit neutral and let the wind and current bring you towards the person. . . You girls are not mentioning how to consider the wind... seems there are so many techniques that are correct but these examiners are looking for a specific method. . .
No one I fish with would be able to do the math, the poor guy would be treading water for an hour before we figured it out! (That is if we realized he even fell out.) Just kidding....or am I? Great video, loved all the drama.
More good stuff. Would be cool to see SeaSchool or one of the others pick this up for classes. Much more entertaining than some of that CG Auxiliary stuff... although (and I know we all know better), it would have to be pretty dire straits to rescue a MOB with the pointy end of a gaff, even on a calm day. There's no boat hook on that well-equipped rig you're running? :-)
Its hard to watch any of your videos without smiling from ear to ear. I will probably never use any of this, but you sure made it fun to learn. Its also good to do drills with what you do, even if you do overdramatize it a little for the audience 😆.
Great video. I learned a lot. Thank you for concentrating on what is important, which is a captain saving a person that has fallen overboard. These days some people are more worried about the gender term “man” than learning about how to save a person. In this case everyone knows man=person and thank you for focusing on what is rational and important.
*******I M P O R T A N T******* You should have mentioned the most important part of rescuing a MOB. ALWAYS approach the MOB from downwind or down current. Love the channel and the apparel, I hope that one day my two girls may be as passionate about fishing and the ocean as you both are.
Just had someone go overboard on a NCL cruise on the breakaway. Must be a terrifying way to go.

The overhead drone view was very interesting, seeing actually what was happening. Love the videos
While I was out today on Long Island Sound I tried the Williamson turn several times and at different speeds. Worked well. Thanks.
this is great, as well as the last one regarding radio. keep in mind a stuffed float with a float is going to drift with the wind, not current.

Very good video on a most important subject. The drone shots made it crystal clear on how these maneuvers work.
Great instructional video!!
CLEAN N CLEAR TURN BRAVO
Great job ladies. Chuckled when you used the gaff for the rescue lol
You guys are great. Too much fun making that video.
Great job Captains. My husband and I discuss this all the time. He shows be how to disconnect the auto pilot to come back to pick him up.

I was confused when I saw two girls that looked pretty much the same then I read your channel title haha! Thank you! Very interesting.
i love your channel. learned alot about fishing and boating.
Wonderful information ladies thank y'all
Love what you ladies do.
Great explanations and great driving. You pick the best topics.

Thanks for sharing.

Excellent instructional video.....now back to the dock for the Clean & Cook portion of Mr Mahi! ;)
good job
Great explanations! Gaff made me laugh tho 🤣
We love you girls ...keep the videos coming !!
That was cool and fun thanks
What gaff do you recommend for MOB recoveries?
Great vidio
I guess it’s very important to keep the gaff sharp and clean for MOB recovery ?
This is good info, thanks

awesome
My heroes 👏🏽👏🏽
What do you do if there is a strong current? Do you assume that the boat and MOB are drifting at the same speed therefore no adjustment to the plan?
Will this be on the Captains test ???
Yes. Or some aspects of it.
I always enjoy man overboard training. I just wish I could hop overboard instead, but we have to stay safe and use a manikin.
You girls are going to be great

Another great and helpful video. I just get a email saying the package I won just arrived! Love you guys!
These maneuvers, you will need to practice on. Just like CPR or first aid, you need to keep your skills honed. Thanks.
In the tradition of warnings on coffee cups stating that its "hot" liquid... Just remember not to reach for a real MOB with the gaff! 😉👍 (Unless you don't like them)
This is also good for when your favorite hat blows off...😉

steven spielberg director? love it . and academy awards goes to best support actress ? Gale Force Twins :)
Takeaway: rescue buddy using gaff hook. Got it. 😀
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
Am enjoying these general boating knowledge videos. You two should thing about recording an online course you can sell
This is one of the best drills ever!

Would you try to get Gale Force Mom out of the water with that boat hook? I believe you wouldn't survive that (shit)storm afterward.
I'm pretty sure that was Emily's voice! Mr. Mahi's voice would be a little deeper!😂
👍
Education w/ humor is a great combo!
Very instructive but humorous, kudos to Mr Mahi
👍👍👍👍
I'm not sure i would want rescuing if someone was going to gaff me back into the boat lol, jk of course, great video as usual😀
Best not to gaff the person you are trying to rescue... unless you really have to :)
Its hard to watch any of your videos without smiling from ear to ear. I will probably never use any of this, but you sure made it fun to learn. Its also good to do drills with what you do, even if you do overdramatize it a little for the audience 😆.

I see you used a gaf to retrieve Mr Mahi...I thought you wanted to save him? ROLF

All that math renders my man overboard drowned before I can find my calculator and work out his rescue..
Another handy reminder lesson. The only time I was involved in a MOB situation, we sent up a helo. . .
.
Aircraft carriers don't make quick u-turns!
We had a guy go overboard. Before we had a chance to do anything, the RNZN ship following us had picked him up and served him a tot of rum.

depends on circumstances right? Because the draft of the vessel can push you away from the mob very quickly aswell. windward and leeward.
Don't gaff your buddy 😂😂😂
It’s not a man overboard nowadays. It’s a person overboard 😂😂😂😂
Hahahahah
So that's how you put a life jacket on a Mahi...

Why not just make the turn and come at them is that not the same thing 😕
I'm not the fastest at math so goodbye buddy Williamson turn fail. I'll be sure to make up a heroic story of your passing.
