This is a great recap on this quiet technology, Brock. I've driven and ridden in a number of other high-end vehicles that cost a lot more than any Lexus and none of them are more quiet or refined. This is why I remain a loyal Lexus owner.
I went in the brand new rx recently and it was significantly louder than my old lx470. Insane how lexus tried to quieten their cars in the early 2000s.
The white stuff under the spare tire is not sound dampening, it's sealer. It goes where any metal has been stamped to cover the seams. The black is yes, dampening , it goes on wet and dries in the ovens before it gets the paint applied. I build the RX in the paint dept. So can confirm the dampening is everywhere 👍 including in the cabin in the footwells as well.
I tried sound proofing material on my Camry, it's like pluging holes on a Swiss cheese. I proofed the doors, now I hear the the tires more. I did the bottom now I hear the rain on the roof, enless work.
Unfortunately most cars under $100k now are cutting back on physical sound deadening materials and trying to make up for it with active noise cancellation. This cuts the cost of materials (more profit) and reduces weight, giving them better EPA numbers.
Explains why the current gen es 350's are not as quiet IMO than previous generations. The 2015 I test drove years ago seemed like a tomb and it was a basic ES. I heard the pre 2013 ES's were even quieter. So I was quite disappointed in the base 2019 ES I test drove which claimed more insulation on the floor yet more overall noise. On the '21 UL ES I drove, the door sheet metal was so thin it actually flexes when closing the doors. Sad that even the UL wasn't as quiet as the base 2015 I test drove.
My 2005 ES330 is still whisper quiet and smooth at 276,000 miles ! It’s got that material in the fender liners as well as the trunk pan material. No double paned glass tho. My 08 LS460 has the double paned glass tho! So quiet and well built
I doubt dampener is in the doors on that model, it's definitely not for the ES. They put a small square of butyl (dynamat) behind the subwoofer. Still a quiet ride!
Just picked up a 2013 ES 350 with 30k miles on it... sure it's low miles, but it's 9 years old, and it is VERY quiet. I have been a become a fan of Lexus, they are just great well-built vehicles.
@Dcon 860 there's an aftermarket gas pedal module you can buy that gets rid of the delay. Me personally, I just live with it, most times it's a seldom thing.
@Dcon 860 oh I get the same, mine is the Matador Red Mica... in direct sun it has the brighter red/orange hughes, but in the shade it looks like a deep black cherry. Pretty sure Lexus put a lot of pearl flake into their signature paint options to give them that subtle depth.
important note: note all lexus' have the double pane glass which is a HUGE contributor to why high end luxury cars can get so much quieter than Honda accord ect... Only the luxury / ultra luxury models trim models have it... base models do not.
@@jeffs70chevelle what surprised me recently is I found out the kia Sorento or the telluride has double pane front windows and windshield. Modern everyday cars are coming along nowadays
The thing to note is thicker glass will reduce wind noise and the noise from other cars, but does almost nothing for road noise which resonates up through the unibody
The "felt" stuff in the wheel opening is something I didn't know about. Other brands use the acoustic laminated glass and NVH materials on the sheet metal as well. BTW, those spots are strategically chosen by engineers. They don't just slap that stuff on everywhere. They fine tune the exact placement of that stuff for max effect because it does add weight. You didn't mention any of the undercarriage NVH panels.
True. I need to know that black material can be purchased and apply to my CHR. My lexus don't seem to show much insulation material but the quietness is apparent even though I'm using 30 and 35 tire profile.
Love the car except most cars and SUV’s interiors have touch screens that stand out or are sticking up from the dashboard, big and clutsy , fine for some and not for others like me , they should have those integrated into the dash panel that sink down into and out of site and raise up via button or voice commands when needed .
i noticed that older Lexus have more dampening material than newer models? While my 2010 RX has a fully covered engine bay the newer models since 2015 does´nt.
Because theyve found better ways to do it. And cosmetic engine covers have NOTHING to do with sound deadening. Youre commenting on soomething you have no knowledge on.
Wish all lexus's came with laminated glass on all windows. My standard model 2019 es 350 had standard front side glass which was thicker than the rear side glass. Dont take my word for it, measure it for yourself. Explains why I seem to hear more noise coming from the rear. Even my UL ES 350 had thinner rear side glass.
If u wanna see highly practical NVH lowering measures in cars that cost less than Lexus, while yielding highly impressive results, look at the latest Korean premium models from Kia and Hyundai. Critical items that make a huge difference: 1. Acoustic glass with a sound barrier sandwiched in between glass. 2. Area directly behind both hinges (front doors)…that lead into fender well. 3. All 4 fender wells. 4. Exterior portion of the floorpan. Huge difference if thick underseal is sorayed on entire floorpan. 5. Firewall insulation.
What kind of insulation is it specificallly? I used noico on a subaru outback, but it was very heavy and only really stopped metal vibration. Thanks! Also, where can you buy felt material for the wheel wells?
The black mat and white arent really why its so well done. Every car for the past 20 years has that mat. But lexus layering of carpets, panels, tires, and aero is what helps a lot more
My Lexus ES is loud, though is a hybrid, very disappointing… lots of wind noise, when I have the sunroof panel open it feels like my windows are cracked, horrible for highway cruising, major reason I’m considering selling, maybe it’s just mine, but that has been my experience
My 2021 Lexus RX 350 is a giant rattle and squeak box and has gotten worse over time. My vehicle only has 31,000 miles presently. It started when first bought the car resulting in the dealer replacing one of my door panels. Now the lift gate and host of other areas make all sorts of irritating noises that have not managed to be properly resolved after multiple trips to my local dealer. I've never had so much interior noise from any other brand of car. I've owned all sorts of cars over the years from Chevy Camaros and Honda Preludes to an E39 BMW 540I M Sport. None of them had rattle and squeaking noise issues. Then I bought a 2019 Lexus ES 350 only to have odd noises from the AC Compressor and dash and door vibrations and now I'm in the aforementioned RX 350 after the dealership's bodyshop botched a paint repair twice resulting in diminished value to my car ES 350. Honestly, I don't know that I'll ever buy another Lexus again...
I have a 2021 rx350 and it did not travel many miles and yet I hear I became noise from the panorama ceiling... Does anyone suffer from the same problem as me and what is the solution?? Please interact
The IS is entry level. So it's quieter then your regular labels (toyota,Honda,gm etc) but won't be as sound as say, the LC or GS where paying double the price of an IS gets you alot more goodies uncluding more sound cancelation materials.

Ya, youre absolutely wrong. The Ls and LC, Lx are tops in quality, reliability, capability, material selection, and yes, quietness. Ive owned and drove all the german and american "luxury" brands, and the lexus is still absolute king of the hill in the affordable top end luxury market (sub 150k sedans). I'd rather have a non luxury car, and put ride smoothness in second priority to acoustic damping Because I fill every minute of driving with listening to either music or talking and I'm tires of the isolation effort I wouldn't mind paying some extra 100 bucks if car manufacturers deployed acoustic damping
