I know I'm off topic but, do you have any more info on retro-bit's Genesis Nomad? This is the last console I'm waiting for. I have physical MD carts that I would love to play as a handheld.
Plan on picking up the AVS and pairing it with a 55" QD-OLED(Samsung S90D - 2024) next month. I've got the N30 2.4G already, but I wonder if the RetroBit Origin8(Game Boy version) would be a better pick. Does anybody know which of the two has less latency? I'm kind of over using original hardware & wired controllers on an old 2005 Sony WEGA CRT, regardless of it being a more authentic experience. 90's CRT's have aged like crud image quality qise due to long hours and the internal guts getting old, so those mid-2000 wegas are your best bet, aside from having superior PQ as it is. Yet I just can't stand the boxy silver bezel, but eh. And i figure, it's never the same regardless as it was playing these older consoles way back when with the NES, SNES etc. So I'd rather try something new and freshen things up for a more convenient modernized set up as a last ditch effort. 55" QD-OLED TV(if only 42"'s existed instead of WOLED. Guess I'll have to sit farther back with the 55" to accomodate the stupidly large 4:3 aspect ratio when retro gaming), HD clone consoles like the AVS, Super Nt, Mega Sg & Duo, wireless 2.4G controllers from either RetroBit or 8bitDo, and possibly EverDrive Flash carts.
I love using the N30 with my NES. I also have the SN30 and M30 for my SNES and genesis. Now if only they would make N64, dreamcast, and gamecube controllers, I could go totally wireless on my controllers!
Yeah thatd be awesome! They did do the N64 bluetooth controller with Retro-bit a long while ago... but never made the retro receiver for it. Never heard much about that controller and never used one myself so dunno if it was good or not.
They certainly put out quality, which is nice, in a world where 3rd party anything, normally means useless garbage. Its nice to see the quality of there controllers they are releasing is still standing up. Its nice to see a 3rd party company like this, always try to make sure there products are acceptable quality. Shame other companies do not really bother.
hi i am 39 and when i play nes game on recalbox i want the original pad to feel again the same emotion when i was a kid and i always wanted a turbo !!!!!!! now i can play with more pleasure , awesome video thank you dude
perfect for NES, Master System, TurboGrafx, GameBoy, GameGear, GBA... like it better than the middle-ground Pro controller, I rather prefer to have both the N30 for 8bit and handhelds, and the SF30 for 16bit. It also fits perfectly the Raspberry Nespi case.
I would agree that this controller is great, but it does have one problem. Hitting select/start at the same time does not register as such, it registers as L/R when pressed at the same time. Also side note, the turbo a/b buttons are mapped to the same buttons as a/b, they are not seperate inputs
When it comes to Wireless NES controllers your options are basically this 8bitdo combo, the Hyperkin Cadet BT that comes with the adapter or the RetroUSB Wireless NES Controllers. Though in all honesty 8bitdo has probably got the best product of the three
Yeah, but does it feel like a wet gummy bear? :P Seriously though, I would like 8BitDo make updated "clone" versions of the NES Max (controller shaped like a boomerang with wing grips and a cycloid sliding d-pad) and the NES Advantage (basically a joystick) - both original versions had turbo buttons as a standard feature
I rather their DIY nes pcb board they did. You use the actual nes controller that way. The problem I find when it comes to 8bitdo is their membranes and d-pads. With the DIY board, you still use all Nintendo’s original stuff except for the pcb itself.
the DIY stuff is cool, only downside is where do you get a factory new original pad these days? used ones on ebay are either broken or gunked up, yellowed and what not... the few close to pristine ones are so expensive that i wouldn't dare to mess up their collectors value, i'd rather leave those to the real collectors that still play with original hardware. But i bought a 8 pack of defective SFC controllers for a few bucks, now i got plenty OG SNES buttons, D-Pads, Membranes and stuff that i can implant on my 8bitdo SFC30 and SFC30 Pro pads. ....just need to actually do it.
ZeroB4NG Yea I guess I didn’t think about that, but that’s only because I was able to get lots of extra nes snes controllers before the craze/price gouging started. So you make a great point, but for me, even if I didn’t, the functionality of 8bitdo’s dpads and membranes on punchout would drive me to other options. The new sn30’s and 30 pros for example have a ton of misclicks. Just thinks you didnt press, where as this diy project im talking about just doesnt have those issues. Even nintendos own nes classic and snes classic controllers membranes and dpads do the same thing as 8bitdos does, so in the end, I guess you gotta ask, how much fo you play, how much of these games do you beat, or want to beat, and what is the optimal performance worth? For me, i’d spend $100 on someone selling the nes controller with the retro receiver I have vs the $0 id be willing to spend on this because I know the issues it has. But I do no death runs and stuff so i need my controller to be spot on. I mean, I spent $400 on a turbo duo to play rondo of blood so, I get that Im not the avg consumer lol.
Thanks! don't like the old model either. Mine came with the Analogue Nt mini. I never bothered using it, since I already had an OG SF30, with the same button orientation. Definitely need to pickup some new 8BitDo controllers, and this one is on the list.
I'm a fan of retro-bit's NES controllers. They are relatively cheap and look very similar to the originals but the A and B buttons are angled like the dogbone style and there is a little indentation in the middle of the d-pad similar to the X-box one d-pad, both of which I think are slight improvements over the original design.
My favorite wired 3rd party controller for a while was the Retro-bit dogbone clone controller. It was like $5 and was really good except the cable was a bit thinner and cheap feeling.
Excellent review! I always appreciate your videos as they are so helpful with purchasing decisions. Can you please describe how you have your NES Toploader connected to the monitor? It looks incredible! Thanks again!
I wish this controller was straight Bluetooth with no receiver required I would love to play my emulators with it. Imo the new controller was the best for platformers perhaps I am remembering it wrong though
I have this controller and I agree it's a great controller, fixes all the D-Pad issues from the past controllers too. I actually slightly prefer the DIY mod Kit for the NES controller (which also has fixed D-pad), the buttons feel a little different probably because the pads. I used it in a brand new NES Classic controller. Both are great though and they are used frequently in 2 player sessions. @Madlittlepixel Do you have the NES controllers for the Switch Online service? I read that those can be synced to the 8bitdo NES bluetooth adapters. So it's actually possible to use official wireless NES controllers on the NES. If you have those it would be cool to see how well that works. Thanks for the vids!
Interesting, I picked up the 2.4ghz version for the NES Classic, it doesn't have the shoulder triggers! The 4 face buttons are A, B, Turbo A and Turbo B! Gonna try to hook it up to my G.Bros adapter to see if it works with the Switch!
Such a helpful review. Trying to decide between these and the official Nintendo NES Switch controllers now that they’re on sale. Do you know if they work with 8BitDo’s adapters? Also, why has no one commented on the beautiful picture of this old system on that display?! How do you have it hooked up? Thanks again for all you do.
Ok yep you've done it! I was keen to get the official Nintendo ones but dang I'm def an 8bitdo guy so yep need to get one of these. Might even get 2. For my NES mini and Switch it'd b sweet. I use the NES mini ones on my WiiU which is pretty good and the SNES mini ones too. Def good. No retro reciever dang thats close to the price of the Nintendo ones and u get 2, dang, tough choice.
Probably been commented already, but have you looked into the replacement controller motherboards that 8bitdo makes? I think if i get a retro set up ill buy a few broken nes controllers and mod them with those boards to have a pretty close to authentic setup.
The controller has an issue where it doesn't register when Start + Select are pressed together. This occurs when using the Retro Receiver or as a USB PC pad. As I use this combination to access the Everdrive menu (and know at least one game where it is used), it's a deal breaker for me.
Hey for the magedok portable, when using it for the switch won’t it brick the switch bc your not using a dock and using a third party product. Just curious bc I saw other people using that monitor with a switch specifically
The home button on the N30 controller registers as down and start I believe as default on the NT Mini, so try changing your hotkeys for whatever you want it to work for as down and start and the home button should work for you.
So I picked one up and i'm getting the occassional drop of bluetooth sync after a few minutes of play. It would actually be a good controller for NES if not for this glaring flaw which make the controller unusable.
The 2.4g one isn't for the NES classic. The NES classic 2.4g one is for the NES classic. There's a 2.4g version for the original NES. It has far less latency than Bluetooth. (3.5ms vs Bluetooth's 35-120ms fluctuations)
the problem of dogbone av famicom controller is not so small and perfect distance between A & B buttons, which makes me fel uncomfortable for playing. I had chinese clone who has joypads like sega megadrive 16 bit does, so it was perfect for playing course i could use one finger for regulating A & B buttons properly. but this dogbone is sucks!! its so uncomfortable.. terribly uncomfortable. I want to try this classic NES controller or 8bit do controller for NES. Guys please tell what do you think about my issue. does anyone feels so uncomfortable with this just like me? and as you noticed its impossible to buy it course its sold out everywhere. even on amazon((( why they dont produce more?
I'm not sure what's been up with the design of the newer versions of their controllers. Their original releases all kept to the look of the actual controllers, but with their newer batches they changed it up and there's no option to pick the original design. I bought one of the sn30 pro usb ones a few months ago just after it released and the SN color option was completely gray controller & all 4 face buttons are light purple, no darker ring around the face buttons. Still a great controller but doesn't look near as great as the original versions they released.
I finally noticed lag after playing SMB today (via AVS) with this N30 BT. This will make it hard to play at what I'm used to. (Maybe it's the TV?) I'm going to try the 2.4Ghz N30, but have to wait a few days for it to be available on amazon.
