I think they don't sound as good because when you have fewer people in the band, it's easier to know where everyone else is and you have basically a "tighter" sound. When you have fewer instruments making noise it's also easier to give breathing room for improvisation, which had led to some of Modest Mouse's coolest stuff before. I liked them as a 3 piece, and as a 4 piece with Dann on guitar. Also I don't think they do the two drummers gimmick very well. Melvins do it much better. But that's just my two cents.
Aside from the fact that I don't really think they sound THAT bad here, they've been playing this song for almost 2 decades and it probably gets a little old, hard to do it with the same enthusiasm.

Obama Christ Good point. I was also up close at a small amphitheatre outdoors where the sound kind of got lost in the atmosphere.
