Probably about 30 different jobs ranging from subway and gas stations to assisting with the prototypes for the iPhone 5s and 5c. Even the military. I feel like I’ve done everything and been everywhere, yet I don’t belong anywhere. This song makes me cry like a baby because it’s just too close to home
A genius lyricist. Brock has a unique way of using oxymoronical dichotomies. I'm mostly into heavy metal. The Lonesome Crowded West in particular but other earlier Modest Mouse will always have a special place in my heart. It's whimsical, full of mood, evokes nostalgia and never fails to make me reminiscent.
I’m so glad you reacted to the live version. This very video is one of my favorite comfort watches of all time. It’s always interesting hearing other people’s perspectives on songs I love. For me, what is interesting about how Brock captures a nomadic lifestyle in this song is there’s a very distinct sense of sadness about it. Maybe that he feels like he doesn’t have any choice but to be a drifter, or that he feels like he’s already traveled everywhere but he’s still trapped in a sense, like the open road has become its own prison and he can’t find anywhere he can settle down. Also the strain it puts on his relationships and not being able to maintain them, like with the line “you said that you did, but you didn’t understand,” presumably the person he’s talking to not understanding his nomadic lifestyle. It is not without its troubles. Thanks again for sharing your experience thoughts on this one, love your reactions.
Real talk, I would have to acknowledge that's a reasonably debatable proclamation.. however I will add some good garnish of semblance to your well of awesomeness. Pinback is also one band I always lean towards when underrated greatness in music is brought into discussion. I won't say one way or the other whether or not I think one is more underrated, etc etc; I simply want to set this thought here for any future passer-by's that happen to find this. Modest Mouse is truly worthy of the feelings and resonance they attribute to listeners of their energy. I can verify that Pinback assumes the exact same resonance that I would also get by listening to MM. Take care y'all. Grey Machine by Pinback would be my recommendation to check out first
Modest Mouse released a 20th anniversary edition of the album this is opening track on, Good News for People who Love Bad News, and they included a remix of this track "enough love to kill us all" it give an entirely new vibe to the song - really worth checking out.

You know dude, we live in Hungary ( my sweetheart and me) and when I go somewhere, I always come back here to see how much worse living here is than where I was before. I sometimes build exhibitions and I got to know many people, but I got much closer to all of them in a few days there than to the sons of my country with whom I worked. It's wery sad for me! I really understand this song! :(

I think one of the biggest draws of joining the military is "seeing the world". I sort of regret not doing that after hearing my Dad talk about his time in the Navy.
Modest Mouse is awesome but I think I would of chose Gravity Rides Everything, Breakthrough, but most definitely Spitting Venom and maybe Steam Engenius after those. Spitting Venom is incredible.

Usually I don't like suggesting Float On as an introduction to Modest Mouse, but if he does listen to Float On, straight after World At Large is exactly where he should.
I'm a big fan of Shit Luck. It's a bit rougher than some of their other stuff but just has such a great delivery. Anything off their first few albums is gold though.
Modest Mouse is one of my all time favorite bands. This album is the last album that I was able to get into, though. Their newer stuff doesn't have the same impact for me. Their albums that came before this album are their best.
Modest Mouse is my favorite band. The sad truth is they are never as good live as their pre-recorded album stuff. IMO. Shame that most of the stuff you listen to is live only now due to copyright, but if you like a song of theirs, look up the album version, you may like the quality of vocals and instruments more.
