      This is what I love to hear. I was lucky enough to get in the first hour for a couple of the new cards, even then, it still took a while. But next to having a MC close by and the Newegg shuffle, this was one of the best ways to get a GPU. Sadly... they closed it down, but it was probably for the best.

      @OneFortyFour I don't think that's true. They've seen what miners are willing to pay for GPU's. Like I said, their value is determined by their ability to mine Ethereum weighed against power consumption. Without mining, they're have to revert back to gaming performance as the pricing metric. I expect the 4000 series to be worse price to performance than the 3000 series was, even with the inflated ACTUAL MSRP, not the mining MSRP. But as long as some other coin doesn't step up in a short period of time, the 5000 series will likely have to take a step closer the launch MSRP's of the 3000 series.
      But that's all provided that the government gets inflation under control and solves the supply chain issues. It really is a problem from a lot of different angles, even without miners.

    I've honestly just kept my old graphics cards. What's even more interesting is developers and even processor manufacturers are aware that most gamers are still using the 1000 series graphics cards. I have yet to see anything so extraordinary or "game-changer" to force me to switch. If I can get my hand on a 3070 at retain price, then great. If not, then oh freaking well.
    In my opinion, it would be fantastic if they made separate graphics cards for miners and gamers.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      They do make mining specific graphics cards. The problem is that what makes a GPU good for gaming also make it good at mining and there's really no way to stop them from using gaming graphics cards to mine. The fact that every measure that's been taken has been subverted shows that. Besides, gaming graphics cards are more desirable because they hold more value at resale. So the mining specific cards aren't as desirable to miners. Unfortunately.

    A few years ago, people were saying things like "these are the best times to be a PC gamer" and whatnot. Every single aspect of PC building is increasing in price. Flagship CPUs used to cost $400, now they're $700, good mobos cost $150, really good ones cost $200 and the most overkill ones used to cost $300 - those prices are now $250, $350 and $800 respectively. Great dual tower coolers used to cost $50 and those were all that you needed, nowadays you need to spend $150 and above on simply cooling your high-end CPU (especially if you go Intel route that is). Decent PSUs are $150 and up, they used to be $100, the only good thing is that multi-GPU is dead so less people need 1000W or more. Also, people are paying stupid amounts of money for tiny ITX cases, material cost of which is a 1/4 of an ATX case.

    Well thank goodness you're back. It's been a nice to listen to a rational analysis of where we are. When Jensen announced the RTX 3080 it caused a depression in the value in GTX1080Ti GPUs. When he made the crack about it was finally safe to move away from Pascal that seemed to do the trick. I was fortunate enough to buy an EVGA GTX1080Ti FTW3 for $345. Quite frankly it seems to give me all the performance I need in a GPU for the games I play. What I really want to do is buy the correctly balanced motherboard, memory and CPU for this GPU. I want it to be second hand from EBay (as always). I'm currently running it in an old HP Z420 workstation with an E5-1650V2 CPU and I know the old cpu and motherboard are causing bottleneck issues with the outdated instruction set but I don't know enough about the next generations of six and eight core cpus to pick the sweet spot. I know I'm not your target demo (I'm a retired 66 year old) but I game Destiny2, Control, No mans Sky, Forza and in the past games like Witcher 3. I guess that depends on how new you want to go. I think a 10700 is probably the best bang for the buck right now. I got a 10700K off eBay for $250 used. Then I got a Gigabyte Z590 board for about $150. That's a lot of system for under $400 and it should last you a while. If you want to go further back, I don't think there's enough to be gained unless you go to something like the 8th gen Intel system or the 2nd gen Ryzen systems. An 8600K doesn't have hypthreading, but it should still handedly beat the E5 1650 v2 is pretty much any test. There's just not much of an IPC gain.
      Buuuut... if you bought a 1440p monitor, you could bump up the resolution and get rid of you bottlenecking issues. The 3770 was able to fully utilize the 1080 Ti in my testing at 1440p, and a used 1440p monitor shouldn't be too expensive.

    I stopped looking for a GPU. I've been gaming with a GTX 1080 so long, I realized I didn't need it that badly. Besides, the only reason I wanted one was for VR and most new VR headsets don't fit my IPD so I've kinda given up on VR for now. The 1080Ti FTW3 I have in my VR rig isn't even being used and I see no need to swap it into my regular gaming rig. I got tired of the Best Buy Shuffle, so I don't even check for cards that much. Ironically, Microcenter had 6800XT and 6900XT's in stock but I will never pay those prices.

    I am just happy that this year developers are still making an aford to optimize games for gtx 1060 performance cards. With my 1650 I still expect to play Elden Ring and Dying light 2 just fine on medium setting in full HD with minimum 30 FPS. When this s-show ends, then I will consider to invest in more enthusiastic pc hardware. Unfortunately I don't expect the situation to improve considerably until Zen 4 comes out. By to improve I mean the situation when you can get a GPU at MSRP in your nearest shopping hall without any afford. There is a second peace of molded grain that will make the pc-gaming hobby even more out of reach for many people. According to some leaks the GPU performance will at least double in four to five years and we will be able to run 4k 144HZ affordlessly, but the prices will double too. Neither Nvidia nor AMD want the prices to drop and will increase the price of the flaships every year.

    The "solution" I came up with in regards to my new PC build was simply looking at the opposite end of the spectrum. In other words instead of trying to play new titles on overpriced hardware, I put together a Windows 98 system, which admittedly that can be a minefield in it's own right. But a Pentium 4 powered AGP era machine isn't on any miners radar.
    I already have a high end Windows 7 and XP build (offline platforms). I use Linux for a daily driver so I can get away without needing beefed up specs for a modern era machine. So it made logical sense to abandon modern era trends and roll back the clock a couple decades to a simpler time and simpler pricing. Ended up with a respectably powerful 98 build for under $250. The price made sense, it keeps some hardware from ending up in the e-waste pile, and it sticks it to modern era greed tactics bleeding consumers dry. Best of all, no DLC, no micro-transactions, no pre-ordering shenanigans, no mandatory net connection/accounts required, you just game and enjoy. Plus in keeping with tradition, it's a Dell Optiplex too. So it'll likely outlive the universe.

    Have a completed rig minus GPU sitting on one of my workshop benches, it was hard enough getting a 5950X off Newegg back in April, but I never expected to sit this long in the EVGA queue. Also have been complete misses on Newegg so I just picked up a Xb Series X.
    After growing up mainly on consoles dating back to the SNES and then transitioning back to PC's fully around the time I was in HS/College around the Xbox One/PS4 releases, I can say i did honestly miss how much stuff "just works" on console versus PC.
    That said, the second I get my hands on anything 3080 or higher I doubt I'll use my Xbox SerX much, if at all.

      @@achalnigam4710 Relative to most I guess maybe so, but really it was just a byproduct of $50/bwk to my "gaming fund" savings account. I was fortunate enough as a kid to have parents that taught me to save for things I want so since I was 12 I've been working.
      Plus my expenses are minimized elsewhere, I pre-make the same chicken salad M-Fri for work lunches, and otherwise I mostly eat/prepare food at home otherwise.
      I've gone from an initial idea of making a 5800X x RTX 3070 build to a 5950X x 3080 or higher just because I've had to wait so long so it just keeps adding up. I really want to get out of my current i3770 x GTX 1080 build but given the pandemic I'm not trying to spend money I don't have to.
      I guess I could've bought a scalped 3080 by now but I've been helping my parents out during the pandemic and they're a far greater priority for me than a GPU.
      TL;DR: Pay yourself first and spend money on what makes ya happy, don't waste money on stuff ads tell you to buy.
      Blessings and Good Fortune for you in the future!

    • @jeffzebert4982
      @jeffzebert4982 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Abandon ALL hope, unfortunately: Ethereum has just started taking on a J-curve, which means that from here on out, its "value" shall rise EXPONENTIALLY! This means that graphics card prices will ALSO rise exponentially! And, this, in turn, will mean that the ONLY people who will continue to buy these graphics cards will be the miners! You see, when Ethereum becomes worth $1 MILLION per coin, then the miners will be more than willing to pay over $1 million for each graphics card! This is because, with Ethereum being THAT HIGH in value, a $1 million+ graphics card could pay for itself in just DAYS!

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Based on what? First, I don't see Ethereum being valued at $1,000,000... and if it does, it won't be any time soon. That being said, it doesn't matter. Once Ethereum goes proof of stake, it can go as a high as it wants and it won't have any impact on GPU prices since it can't be mined with GPU's at that point.

      Thanks! And that hurts to hear. It's one thing to have to wait, but it sucks when you're hoping your GPU doesn't kick the bucket. Have you tried removing the drivers with DDU and installing the latest drivers from Nvidia? I find that solves a lot of issues. I've Windows Update download GPU drivers and seriously screw things up. This is always the first thing I try with GPU issues, and it fixes it 90% of the time. I've got a good walkthrough on the channel. It's called Testing and restoring a used mining GPU.

    I've built my new PC in August 2020. Gone all out from my somewhat humble budget of ~$600 for an overclockable, good single-core performance CPU (ended up with a i5-9600K at a stable 4.5 GHz OC), a cheap, but Z390 motherboard, a pair of a good RAM sticks (16 GB, overclocked to 3600 MHz) and a decent NVMe SSD. As temporary solutions, I took a PSU from my old build from around 2012 and an old weak GPU (GTX750 1 GB) from my mother's PC, which was bought to replace an even older GPU, which my mom used to play The Sims 3.
    I wanted my future GPU to be RT-capable, so I thought to get a used or discounted RTX 2060/2060s whenever the 30xx gen comes out, and meanwhile use that beefy CPU for emulation of PS3, Wii U and Switch...
    So the 30xx series gets announced, with all those promises of affordability, so I got excited to get an RTX 3060/Ti, or heck, maybe even 3070 when those will come out! So I waited... and then the mining craze had happened.
    So here I am, rocking that weak 1 GB "The Sims 3 GPU" in 2021, unable to buy anything decent to replace it, except some equally temporary solution maybe. Oh well, at least I get a mostly good performance in emulators, so maybe it's not all that bad? _sniff_

    I live in Europe and for the most part we never had that much of an issue with availability besides like the first month or two after the launch of 3000 series. The thing is we never really had them at MSRP (I heard some people have seen prices closer to to MSRP in spring, but can't confirm that), it was always like 2-3x the price. I could go online now buy a card and get it in a few days max. And I'm not talking about scalpers selling stuff online but decent retailers that get their cards from distributors abroad.
