What Was The First Ever Mario Plush?

  • One of the most marketable Mario products out there are Mario plushes. Many companies have made plushes of characters from the Mario franchise over the years. But given how there are so many plushes of the Mario character, which plush(es) came first? What was the first ever Mario plush? It's a pretty broad statement if you think about it, as there are a few Mario plushes out there that might've been the first. In this video, Lane will try his best to answer the confusing and seemingly impossible question.
    0:00 Intro
1:07 Donkey Kong Prototype Mario Plush (Etone, 1982)
8:46 Super Mario OVA Mario Plushes (Unknown Manufacturer, mid-1980s)
14:31 Super Mario Bros. Mario Plushes (Avanti, 1986)

Unless a plush of Luigi based on his anime design exists (which I would be surprised if it did), as a Luigi collector who does a lot of research on his history, I think it's safe to say that his first plush was the Acme one since it's the only Luigi plush I've seen that pre-dates the '90s.

13:14 To answer your question. He did wear a bowtie, but only in a fantasy dream sequence where he was wearing a full blown tuxido while dancing with Peach. But other than that, he was pretty much just typical Mario throughout the thing. Though it would've been hilarious if they made a plush where Mario was in a balerena outfit based on that one scene where he tries to charm an undersea clam to get the star out of its mouth. XD

I’ve always really liked older videogame plushes from the early 80’s to mid 90’s. They’re so charming and they always look so special and nothing like you see nowadays. The Applause and Avonti Mario plushes, Knickerbocker’s Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man plushes, The Dan Brencher Pac-Man plushes from 1991, Kenner Q*bert, and the Caltoy Sonic The Hedgehog plushes are so cool to me for looking like the designs that aren’t used anymore for the characters we know and love. Nice video as always Lane.

  • @anactualmotherbear

I'm willing to believe that any plush based on the 1986 anime is more likely to be the first since Mario and friends would not have finalized designs (like those on the tag, as well as his look in plush form) until the release of Super Mario Bros 2 (Japan) in June 1986. Merch for movies tends to be worked on alongside the film so that the toys can come out around the same time. Video games tend to have toys made after the fact since toys based on video games are rarely a thing, and no one really knows if a video game is going to be a surefire hit.

I feel like because of the existence of the DK Mario Plush, the Mario question is one with a answer. However, I can't find a solid answer for any other character. Although, I've heard some say the Acme Luigi is the first Luigi. So then what's the SECOND Luigi!?

The head looking to the right for the suction cup mario is most likely because it’s nose is big. If it was facing forward, and if you were to put it on a window, his head would be leaning back because of his nose. A lot of suction cup plush I’ve seen have had have heads that look to the side most likely because of the same issue.

Man this was quite interesting for sure! Really goes to show how much we take Mario plushes for granted these days when they really weren’t all that common back then. Never knew these plushes existed although I might have seen the Uvandi plush briefly but don’t quote me on that. Although I especially enjoyed seeing the prototype from the Donkey Kong era was especially fascinating. It’s too bad it didn’t release as I think it would have been pretty reasonably marchitable. But Mario’s updated design in SMB was definitely much more marchitable hands down!

Its not that humans arent marketable. It's that as humans we know what a human should look like, even if it's a stylized cartoon character. So our eyes are naturally critical towards things that appear human.
It's just easier to make a toy animal look cute than make a human plush that isn't weird or creepy looking.
I think Mario's design benefits from this a bit just because he's so non-human shaped it is a bit easier to make Mario look good.
