Used to install solar along with the Tesla Power Packs at a solar company I was working for. Definitely worth the money in the long run. Also heard a story of when one of the recent hurricanes came along, a family had the Tesla power bank installed in their house and they were the only ones with power while others didn't have it for weeks. Just some food for thought.

As a german I can't even imagine this. We recently had no power for a couple of hours twice, and even that was already annoying enough :D I think even just to know that this won't ever happen to me I would use it. I mean it's already a great deal on it's own, a really durable and great looking roof that on top of that produces power if you get the solar roof rather than only solar itself, which is often going to be a really good choice.

Wow that Tesla solar panel must be Hurricane proof. or USA is such pathetic country that need weeks to restore power from small gust of wind. not to mention all other brand also pathetic since they get blown away and yet Tesla not .

Thank you for the informative video.
I live in the Seattle area. I have an 8 kW grid tied system with no battery back up. Got the system installed in August 2014. At the same time replaced the 30 year old furnace with a heat pump & backup high efficiency furnace, old water tank with on demand hot water, all incandescent lights with LED’s and added more insulation in my attic. Just like you, we had really good incentives that have been slowly phased out, except we still have net metering. Even with the variable Seattle weather running the heat pump for heating and cooling and charging two Tesla’s (no gasoline bills), we manage to generate about 63% of our annual electricity need. We still have a number of years before we pay for the system. Even so, I still feel it was worth the expense getting the system so that we can drive clean solar powered automobiles!

I've been driving EVs for 5 years & got solar panels earlier this year. Prior to EVs I was paying $150 + per month for gas and my electric bill averaged $120 per month. I'm paying $200 per month on my solar loan, so right off the bat I'm saving $70 per month!
(Based on 7 months of use I estimate my solar will produce enough to cover my EV & home usage with enough to spare for future growth!)
IMO, at least for So Cal, solar is a no brainer! (The above does not take incentives into account!)

The Jon Rettinger reviews have matured so much. I loved jon4lakers and the techno buffalo times, but I'm enjoying those in depth "heart to heart" kind of reviews a lot. Please keep them coming! We need more conversation in reviews than flashy clickbaits. Jon had stayed true to his calling of giving us the best in-depth analysis of the product based on his experience.
One day, I'm planning on getting renewable source, but I'm in the north east, so it's probably trickier here.
I wonder if the Tesla power wall plays nice with other forms of renewables than solar.

The one interesting part about this for me was the fact that you can sell the electricity back to the grid, I'm from Mexico and in here any energy that I generate extra with my solar panels are not payed back, I'd be gifting electricity, so my house has a little bit les panels so that I still pay a little fee every month.

You can store the energy in your batteries, then use that to power your house at night. With LFP batteries, you can charge and discharge many, many times without degrading the battery.

I installed solar in illinois using a local installer and enphase micro inverters. 10.9 kw grid tie for 23K in 2018. Federal tax credit was $7K. MY local grid power costs about 10 cents/kwhr, but I still would do it again. $37 per month gas and electric bill 9 months of the year. I save $2500 per year off my energy bill. So 16K/2.5K = 6.5 year payback.

I got mine. They came and installed (May 6) a few weeks after I ordered. It took them 4.5 months to send in the paperwork to Nevada Power. Nevada power installed the reverse meter 2 weeks later. Fired up the system and it was not working. Had to wait another 26 days until a tech could get out and fix it. Finally up and running on October 26th. My buddy waited over 4 months for his to finally get working. Be ready to wait. I'm apparently not the only one. The forums are loaded with the same complaints.

Of course Solar works in SoCal, rates are $0.30 / kwh from SoCal Edison or higher. I pay $0.10 kwh in Houston so it really does depend on location. PS - Texas has more renewable energy production than any state. So, even with the very low rates here there is also a lot of renewable.

That's the whole thing, very few can afford it, even with "government incentives", which is basically government covering part of the cost with tax payers' money. Considering that it's mainly the higher earners who can afford these luxury investments, you pretty much end up having poor people partially funding rich people's green dreams.

What is the true state of Tesla solar these days? I've been interested in installing solar here and my research, especially into pitfalls, threw up a lot of stories that Tesla solar was failing due to installation delays, installation problems and problems with software essentially locking out users. There is just enough negative information to make me hesitate yet many early adopter youtubers seem to say the opposite. I'm struggling to discern which information is accurate or what the true state of things is.

    • @codyt.346
      @codyt.346 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hi! The delays are usually depends on the City/county that you live in. Riverside County and Temecula, California are the worst AHJ, in So Cal. The Approved plans have to match the install perfectly. If a Repermit is needed, it can take 1 month to get them back. San Diego City and SD County allows revisions in the field and it speeds the inspection up.
The age of your house is important to. If you have an older house, a Tesla site surveyor should come out to check your roof and Main Panel condition. They will take pics and decide the easiest place to put the equipment. It’s important to communicate where you want the equipment to be installed at..
If you have a newer house then you may be asked to upload pictures. Example of an delay: The equipment located will be based off, what’s the simplest for install. If there’s no room on the outside walls and you have shelving inside the garage, the designer may put the equipment inside the garage. During the install, if you decide you want the equipment moved to behind the fence, your local city may require a plan change.
The Good news is Tesla has the PowerWall+, which is an updated PowerWall with the solar inverter integrated together. What’s really cool is, After the install, the Electrician will leave the PowerWall+ in the ON position! You can use the solar and battery back up the same day of install. When the battery is full, the solar will turn off because you’ll still need Permission to Operate. Once you get PTO, your system will update and will start sending excess power to the Utility.
PowerWall+ can be combined with PowerWall for additional power back up. You can decide if you want a Full Home back up or a Partial Home Backup. If you have the Partial Home Back, and if the Utility power goes out, any loads that are Not in your Backup Load Center will loose power. Usually, AC units Pool Pumps don’t get backed up. However, if your solar is producing 7kw and your AC unit uses 3kw, then your solar should be able to power the rest of your house and charge the battery, slowly… Your system size should be based off your current energy consumption and the size of your main panel. x1 PowerWall+ is good for a small/medium size house. See Tesla.com they have the configurator there.
Note: If you get solar only, after inspection, the system has to stay OFF until you get PTO.
Summary: Delays usually are the results of plan changes / Repermits.

People buy and install natural gas generators for their homes and never even think about payback periods or the monthly cost for fuel or maintenance. These natural gas generators need an annual oil change and battery replaced every few years. Solar panel are basically maintenance free.

You reserve 7% capacity and that lasts for hours? 1.8 kWh seems like it wouldn’t cover a day of your usage (at the bills you mentioned)

I think at one point you misspoke and said you leased the system. Then you said you have a loan to pay off. If you lease the system then you forfeit your tax incentives to the install company. With a loan you keep the tax incentives. I've seen many people say to absolutely NOT lease the systems.

Tesla VPP - Virtual Power Plant from solar and Powerwalls. The Future. I live about 15 minutes from you. It’s awesome to see you as an early adopter of the future trend that Tesla is creating. With Tesla stock, I’ve made over 7 figures, but I’m waiting before I spend a penny. I’m being Smart. The new Supercharger on Culver is nice, but often I find that my Model 3 receives charge from my garage (240V) every night. (My house is in LF - next door city). Every day I see more and more Teslas!!! Their Q3 2021 was excellent. It’s amazing what Tesla is doing. From AI/dojo to designing and making their own semiconductor chips!!! 🤯. To Energy management (btw, IVC college has a Megapack hooked up to the solar cells. You can look at the Megapack if you go over there - on the inside it says “TESLA.” 😁) to the Software that powers the Robots in their Gigafactories (including Austin and Berlin). Take care! I’m sure I’ll have Tesla solar and a Powerpack on my house next year.

    • @norcal-ce7yk

@@JBoy340a exactly! Where I live in CA it regularly gets 100-110°+ in the summer, without air conditioning you would be absolutely miserable. If you want to do anything during the day time besides swimming, it better he early in the morning, which by the way in the summer it can be 80° or more at 8am, otherwise risk sun burn and over heating. It's no joke, ppl die every year from heat related injuries and dehydration in the blistering CA sunshine. But yes 100% solar works great here. 👍

I don't really want to go another five years and look back wishing I had done something. We've been in this house six years now and I'm already doing that 😆

This panel can put out close to 100 watts th-cam.com/users/postUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle. The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts. If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

So $50,000 (without interest) -$15,000 (tax credit) + $20/m grid for next 5 years = Spending $36,200. Or you don’t buy solar and pay a rough estimate of $350/m for the next 5 years = $21,000. $36,200 - $21,000 = $15,200 more using solar vs grid for next 5 years. VERY rough estimate but from a 3 minute breakdown of cost, it looks to be more expensive within 5 years but would probably pay for itself in 10 with the tax credit. The house appreciation in that time with the panels would also probably pay for it but short term he is definitely paying more and not saving money.
