I know this video is old. But Medford completely fixed that detent problem. They are perfect now.

I was seriously considering buying my first Medford, but while searching for info, the algorithms sent me to the Artisan Proponents.
The mini Proponent came in the mail today, and first impressions are good.
Money wise, the Proponent is the better choice, and no one can say that the Proponent is not a beefy, over engineered knife.

Yea this was the first medford I bought because the price was worth gambling with and indeed the first thing I noticed was lack of detent 🙄if I could send this in to have them strengthen it I would definitely make this a favorite. I take it to work anyway as a work knife and everything else about it is awsome. The cutting straps cardboard etc.. is effortless. I can go thru 4 straps no prob. But yea, hard to not think about the detent for sure. Man so close to perfect but yet so far away. I just point the blade more towards the down position rather than up and works great for work haha.tnxs for showin all in all it is cool, just that d a m detent 🙄☹

They have fixed the detent problem. I got a Smooth Criminal about a month ago. They flip perfectly now. You can send yours in and have it fixed.

I just bought one that was built June 2022. The detent and retention on mine is much better than yours here. I am very happy with the functionality and action on mine. Did Medford make improvements since your sample?

Yes. Medford fixed the detent problem. Mine flips perfectly.

Good review. Appreciate your honesty and respect your opinion. My two cents: I own both knives (smooth criminal s35vn and malibu textured aluminum 20cv blade) and would buy another smooth criminal for sure. Hate to see a lot of reviews bashing this super well built “button lock” knife for its flipper tab and lack of detent. I just think this particular knife requires a little “skill” to open. You have to position your finger on the flipper different than most flippers. Also, a tinge of wrist flick while pushing the flipper correctly and this knife flies open. For me it’s the hand ground blade and super solid lock up that make this a great knife worth owning and I certainly wouldn’t ditch it for the flipper tab. Malibu does have a sweet detent but it feels cheap in the hand and the grind feels thick behind the edge. And don’t even get me started on the button lock stick on Malibu. Main thing this video did for me was make me want a sick slim midi like yours! Cheers man

Don’t know if you knew this or not Kev, but I saw a Reddit post a while back…and apparently they make this knife in the U.S??? Thought it might change your mind about buying one 🤷🏻‍♂️👍🏻👀🤣

I bought this knife, its my first medford and its smooth open and shut action and have not failed in flipping it open at all. If you cant flip it open you have to have really girly p***y a** hands man. I want to try more medfords now because really enjoy this knife

@LeftyEDC they did improve the detent. It's not your fault but they flip perfectly now. The old ones like yours that say made in the USA didn't. Mine is blank everywhere. Doesn't say anything anywhere, but the logo on the blade small AF.

This criminal looks about as smooth as a broken cinder block in a box of rusty bolts. Or a gravel-bottom waterslide. Okay, that's a bit harsh, yeah. That non-detent detent might not be representative, even of this model? Mostly, I just wish I knew where it was made. Fuckin cryptic

I wonder if that knife was made in the U.S.A.

At what point will an adjustable detent be standard? I feel like someone has done it.

Why oh why would that even be part of a folder, all that USA branding and that detent, you’d think that someone would’ve had the oversight to address these issues before they released it into the wild, what were they thinking. A quick lesson on how to erode precious credibility a company has by people in Design, and QC. The funny part is that Medford have a wide and varied fan base so that’s good in a way. As per usual, thanks for the vid Kev 👍😎

Best mag loader is the Up Lula. Takes a little to get the hang of but once you do, it’s a game changer. Your honest opinion, ie: shitting on knives makes me smile😊

Medford’s no detent on knives under 500 bucs 🤣

This is my most carried knife. I don't use the flipper. I push the button and gently wrist it. This is so fidget able. Perfect size for me, cuts great and sharpens easy. Whining about the detent is pointless. You are not showing experience with button locks. The new button lock Elementum is an example. Just grind off the flipper tab and move on.

    • @LeftyEDC
      @LeftyEDC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

If that works for you thats awesome. But I am reviewing the knife and it has a terrible detent so I will “whine” about it. I also hate the button lock elementum...so there’s that. 😂
