From the Wiki and a signature of Maynard: "It uses a 6/8 and 4/4 time signature." He is big on changing the beat in his music, trying to break free of the 4/4 that is all over the place. So yeah, not danceable but usually very complex stuff and for sure not something everyone will enjoy. Saw Tool live and they played one song that lasted for over 13 minutes and it was probably amazing "medicated". :P
The time signature is mostly 6/8...which isn't "danceable" like 4/4 time. That's why it threw you off. Maynard and Chris Cornell both use this time signature a lot.
Just a side note: Tool's and A Perfect Circle's music theory involves polyrhythms and such, or, several different rhythms/time sequences playing at different tempos, but line up in a measure. Meaning, each instrument plays in and out of sync with the others, within the confines of that measure (and often more than one), lining up at different points in the body of the song. Hope I explained that right. It's also been stated that the drummer has a thing for sacred geometry but I don't know if that's true or not. To be fair, these bands' songs aren't really thought of as a bop but meant to be experienced. As in, to lie back on your bed and zone out while you listen. Also there's a theory that there's no such thing as a geometrically perfect circle and I'm pretty sure this is where they took the name from. Ugh. I hate myself for everything I've just said. Indeed, this one (Judith) from the first album is much better and the video itself too. To me, the second album have more disappointing tracks, but "the outsider" it's not one of those. For example I like progressive Rock (which have similar complexity like classic music) more than standard simple 4/4 rock tracks, which can be very boring, if it's don't have other qualities which level the simplictiy out. But overall progressive rock is not for everyone and that's ok. The world have a lot of music to offer for every taste.

i believe you mean 'syncopation' and it's not a hard thing to pull off. it's the foundation of most groove/nu-metal. the stuff that these bands (tool & apc) are known for are more akin to poly rhythms or metric modulation. which ocelot is right, you will find, along with syncopation, alot of in many of sub-genres of jazz. the more you know (do do doooo do).
You can keep in the groove of the beat the more you listen to unconventional beat patterns. This doesn’t even sound odd to me at all, but I remember when it did. Your ears are tuned to predictable beat patterns. It takes some listening to but eventually it grows on you and you really appreciate it. Hopefully you grow past your resistance to not finish a song upon a first listen, I think a lot of people would at least appreciate the effort.
The beat is there. It's just harder to find because you're used to the snare being on 2 and 4 in a 4/4 time signature. I can't stress enough that the beat is certainly there. And once you find it, you can always find it.

Sometimes I think you're getting recommendations for the wrong songs to be introduced to a band. 'Judith' was the first Perfect Circle song I heard and it really blew me away, and still does, I highly recommend you give them one more try.

Yeah, the rhythm is in 3 most of the time so it's not as smooth to rock out to. *Judith* is definitely the APC song to introduce someone to. Straight up fire.

Homie it doesn't always have to be 4 on the floor. THIS is the song you need to dive into the lyrics of!!! This is music that has a message or tells a story. I find it rather amusing that in the Rod Zombie video (which is kinda just a form of "evil dance music") you spent most of it being uncomfortable with the lyrics and didn't bother trying to move with the music like at all. Also don't you listen to music where people refer to themselves as demons with guns plotting to kill other people? In my opinion the lyrics in most of Zombie's music are used as a force to help move the music forward, accent rhythms, and add texture. Not sure how much meaning is actually behind them with Zombie but I don't recall you mentioning the lyrics in this song a single time when there is actually something to be said there.

It switches between 4/4 and 6/8. You just needed to slow down, nod at half speed. You did for a moment, but kept tryin to kick it up. If this pissed you off, avoid my favorite band, Nine Inch Nails. They do a lot of this stuff too.
yeah this is syncopated/polyrhythmic it is actually a complicated form of rhythm which overlays two different rhythms, but it is something you cant really do in hip hop. finding a groove in it is difficult

Idk if you'll see this, but I would like to explain their band name. They named themselves "a perfect circle" because they're all from different bands that were/are popular, and when they come together, they make a perfect circle. This isn't entirely the reason (I don't think), but it's the short form. ALSO, you're allowed to have your opinion over anything, BUT understand that the bpm or tempo is purposely crafted in this manner. To add, the song is more about the lyrics
This is par for course on tool/a perfect circle about the beat changes. So, to try to help understand why I believe it's to create a sense of chaos/ mood changes throughout the song/s.
What Rob Zombie did that was kinda genius was to lean into the stereotype of a metal band as being "scary" and "satanic" by fashioning himself after an old 30s horror movie monster and becoming almost cartoonishly "scary". Even with his makeup, he's supposed to look like a metal Frankenstein, the monster who was literally harmless but driven out and killed by the townspeople who didn't understand him and thought he was scary. It isn't for everyone, but it's all sort of tongue-in-cheek and doesn't really take itself seriously. He's like a bad guy in wrestling, positioning himself as almost a sort of cartoon character to take advantage of peoples' precinceived notions. Rob Zombie is like a parody of metal that circles back around to being genuinely good depending on what you're into.
If you want to hear "I can't find the beat" done in a way that shows you why we love it so much, check out Tool's Pneuma. The energy that comes from that kind of complexity can't be matched.

That BPM rant was hilarious, let me answer as a white folk. We have no rhythm, so sometimes a drummer will change up the BPM so that the other half of the crowd can be in time for some of the song.
Okay you have to learn timing because 4 4 timing is basically is a simple beat that everyone uses. You're inside the beach just keep following it and try rocking back and forth and you'll stay in The beat the time changes within the beat that's why you're getting.
The timing is different from standard 4:4 time. They typically called jazz times and are recurring and not "easy to grasp", but early African-American jazz artists are typically credited with creating this technical music device. For example, a 3:4 time would represent you counting 1-2-3,1-2-3-4,1-2-3,1-2-3-4, as opposed to 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4... in a piece of music written in a standard 4:4 time signature. The drummer found the beat, but unfortunately you have to train your ear to listen to this kind of music. This is probably why jazz is enjoyed more by musicians than common LISTENERS. It's also the reason you most likely won't like groups like Tool or Meshuggah, because they are both very technical music groups that experiment with timing signatures, play styles or techniques, instruments and effects pedals to give every song a unique and unforgettable sound.

Open your ears to more than 4/4 beats that you're pre-programmed to. I'm not a fan of APC, but they're just playing in a different time signature. It's not ass just because you aren't able to understand it based on your musical knowledge.
Polyrythms aren't for everyone. It's what Tool/APC have done their whole career. It's more complex and harder for the average ear to appreciate. Not the standard 4/4 grove that most nod to, so makes sense it's not your bag.

Homie it doesn't always have to be 4 on the floor. THIS is the song you need to dive into the lyrics of!!! This is music that has a message or tells a story. I find it rather amusing that in the Rod Zombie video (which is kinda just a form of "evil dance music") you spent most of it being uncomfortable with the lyrics and didn't bother trying to move with the music like at all. Also don't you listen to music where people refer to themselves as demons with guns plotting to kill other people? In my opinion the lyrics in most of Zombie's music are used as a force to help move the music forward, accent rhythms, and add texture. Not sure how much meaning is actually behind them with Zombie but I don't recall you mentioning the lyrics in this song a single time when there is actually something to be said there.

yeah this is syncopated/polyrhythmic it is actually a complicated form of rhythm which overlays two different rhythms, but it is something you cant really do in hip hop. finding a groove in it is difficult

Idk if you'll see this, but I would like to explain their band name. They named themselves "a perfect circle" because they're all from different bands that were/are popular, and when they come together, they make a perfect circle. This isn't entirely the reason (I don't think), but it's the short form. ALSO, you're allowed to have your opinion over anything, BUT understand that the bpm or tempo is purposely crafted in this manner. To add, the song is more about the lyrics

This is par for course on tool/a perfect circle about the beat changes. So, to try to help understand why I believe it's to create a sense of chaos/ mood changes throughout the song/s.
What Rob Zombie did that was kinda genius was to lean into the stereotype of a metal band as being "scary" and "satanic" by fashioning himself after an old 30s horror movie monster and becoming almost cartoonishly "scary". Even with his makeup, he's supposed to look like a metal Frankenstein, the monster who was literally harmless but driven out and killed by the townspeople who didn't understand him and thought he was scary.
It isn't for everyone, but it's all sort of tongue-in-cheek and doesn't really take itself seriously. He's like a bad guy in wrestling, positioning himself as almost a sort of cartoon character to take advantage of peoples' precinceived notions. Rob Zombie is like a parody of metal that circles back around to being genuinely good depending on what you're into.

The timing is different from standard 4:4 time. They typically called jazz times and are recurring and not "easy to grasp", but early African-American jazz artists are typically credited with creating this technical music device. For example, a 3:4 time would represent you counting 1-2-3,1-2-3-4,1-2-3,1-2-3-4, as opposed to 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4... in a piece of music written in a standard 4:4 time signature. The drummer found the beat, but unfortunately you have to train your ear to listen to this kind of music. This is probably why jazz is enjoyed more by musicians than common LISTENERS.
