    I’m 9 days out from hip replacement. The first thing I said after surgery in the recovery room was, “Those damn TH-cam videos lied!” The nurse asked me my pain level between 1 and 10. I yelled “18”. So many vids that I watched were of people able to take on their pre-bad hip life within a week of surgery. Needless to say I had unrealistic ideas about the surgery itself and the recovery. I watched all your hip videos and you made perfect sense when you talked about it being a brutal surgery because of what they need to do fit the artificial ball and socket into your body. I want to thank you for sharing your honest experience. It made me feel much better about my level of pain and my recovery. I am able now to be realistic about this whole thing at least in part because you shared your experience, good and bad. Thank you.

      You are very welcome. I made these videos to try to help others. I had people I knew from high school on facebook telling me how 1 of them went back to work after 1 week. Another literally told me he got home from the hospital and walked 9 miles. I was like you. I was in so much pain when I woke up from surgery and then 2 weeks later I was going into depression. Then I found out the real story from others and from what I was going through. I hope and pray you continue to heal. My hip was replaced in 2019 and now I don't even know I had it done other than a scar. I can walk great and don't have pain or limping. You will get there. Just don't rush it like I did. Take care and if you have any questions just ask.
      Gary

      Gary, Christmas Day will be 6 weeks post hip surgery. I’m healing well. Don’t really need pain meds anymore. Not even Tylenol! I’ve been on tramadol and Tylenol for 5 years at least. It kinda blows my mind that I don’t hurt. I still take 1 Oxy before I go to PT twice a week. They are working on stretching out the muscles and tendons around my hip and down my leg and the process of those stretches leaves me sore but not the horrible pain I had coming home from the hospital. I’m nervous about falls. It has been years since I could walk normally so I’m very out of practice. I’ll take it slow and easy and build strength a little at a time. I’m determined to get back into my garden this spring. Thanks for sharing your experience and I appreciate your encouragement.

      @@mavisdavisify That is great that you are able to be off the pain meds so soon. Sorry for this being so late. I just saw the comment today.
      I understand about therapy needing meds.. They can push it but it is good in the long run. I hope you are still doing well. I can tell you that you will need to work on retraining your brain on walking. And bending down and all those things you could not do before surgery. I am still doing that but it is getting better. But it is getting better the more I make myself walk normal. Take care and I hope you have a great new year.

    Gary, add a railing to your steps before you end up with 2 more new knees and hips lol! That gives me anxiety! 😂Great to hear your update!! Im the one who messaged the other day about my left hip replacement last month and that i was using a cane and walker for 6 years. I have terrible swelling in hip, almost like i have a cantaloupe there or something. Dr said its normal, just worse for some and it can take months to go away. Did you have bad swelling? Thanks!😊

    • @GaryForgingOn
      @GaryForgingOn  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks Lisa, I definitely need a hand rail .. One of those items on my list of so many to fix. :) :) I remember your comment from the other video. I appreciate you watching and commenting. I actually thought the doctor messed up on my hip because it was so swollen it felt like my hip joint was outside my body. I was trying to ice it and everything. My doctor and therapist told me that was normal too. But at the time it was hard to believe them. But they were right. The swelling went down and it slowly got better. It will go down a lot over the first few months but I think it takes several months before it is completely back to normal. Same with my knees. My doc said those would take a year and he was right. Yes, it is swollen now but it will go down and get better and with less pressure from the swelling the hip works better too. Thanks again and take care of yourself. You will do great.

    it's thee middle of June/2024. I'm 73 yrs. old and scheduled for right hip replacement in about a month. I just stumbled across your videos tonight and of all the vids I've watched yours have been the most relatable...............and I haven't even been to surgery yet !! I'm pretty anxious but hopeful. I'm tired of being hurt everyday is the true reason for having this procedure. After my consultation the surgeon says both hips need work but the worst is the right. At least i have a better idea of what I'm in for beginning next month. Like I said , your is the most relatable content yet and I can't thank you enough for your insight. and candid commentary. I wish you well Gary.

      Thank you for those kinds words. I appreciate it. I hope and pray your surgery helps you. It will be rough for a few weeks but it will get better and then when you are getting around without pain you will be ready to get that other one done. I still enjoy just walking without all the limping and twisting and pain. It is great. Take care and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

But breaking those 1 foot at a time habits is tougher than I thought. I still catch myself doing it and have to make myself go with both feet.

Whew, wee, this has been so not fun. Night time is hardest. I think I've finally turned that corner. Thank goodness! Lol, hope all is well with you. Just wanted to let you know that I did it. Thanks for this video Gary. I was particularly interested in the clicking that you mentioned. I’m 10 weeks post TKR and the clicking has been a big issue for me. Although you said you’re not a doctor, at the 6 week visit to my surgeon, he explained the reason for the clicking the same way you did! Once the swelling starts going down there is more space for movement because the muscles have not yet strengthened and tightened up completely. That’s why exercising is so crucial… apart from the bending and straightening. I’m really glad to hear it has improved for you and am looking forward to hopefully being the same. Best wishes from Australia.

    You're an inspiration Gary! I am looking at a THR in May. Probably looking at a TKR this winter too. Same leg like you. If you don't mind me asking, how old are you?

    • @GaryForgingOn
      @GaryForgingOn  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't mind. I am 64 now. The hip was done in 2019 when I was 60. Then both knees in 2022. Just be ready for your knee to really hurt for a while after the hip replacement. It will get better though. I told my doctor how that knee hurt and he said it is the pounding they do to drive that hip ball and spike down into the bone. They drill out the bone something like a mm smaller than the spike. That pounding radiates down to the knee. But it will ease up after a while. Best of luck and I hope and pray it all goes well and you get some relief.

    Thank you for doing this update. It looks like you're doing really well. I'm 6 weeks out and Dr gave me a week to get where I need to be or have to get an mua. Still dealing with sciatica too. But I'm hopeful. Your videos have helped me stay positive.

    • @GaryForgingOn
      @GaryForgingOn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope and pray you can get over that pain and get it all worked out. I have heard of others having to get the scar tissue broken up like that. Hopefully that will help in the long run if they have to do that. I feel for you with the sciatica. I had that off and on and it was really painful. In my case my bottom disk was bulging into the sciatic nerve and it finally ruptured and caused immense pain. After they took that disk out the sciatica went away. Before the rupture I used to get some relief just from walking without limping and twisting so much. All those aches and pains and messed up joints just cause other areas of the body to hurt.

    Hey, blessings to you and family, one question, I had both knees done and one hip, right hip February 1 2023 right knee September 13 , knee still swollen I’m 120 bend 0 extensión still on therapy for right knee at the moment but having discomfort on right hip while lifting right leg while laying down at therapy bed, did you had discomfort in right hip while lifting right leg ?

    • @GaryForgingOn
      @GaryForgingOn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you and blessings to you and your family as well. I hope and pray you continue to heal well and have a full recovery. I had my hip replaced in 2019 and both knees in 2022. So my hip was healed up by the time I did my knees. Even though I was getting around well after 6 months or so on my new hip it was probably a year or more before it was fully healed up and the swelling was all gone. But I remember having discomfort in my hip just raising my knee for a long while. Same for the knees. They took over a year to get to where they are not hurting. My last knee replaced in Sept 2022 is over a year now and it is still a little sore but it will get better. I am not sure if that helps any but it sounds like you are healing up well.

    Hi Gary. Am 7 months post op non my right knee and 7 weeks on my left knee and still using walker. My right knee is now 110 degrees and the new one is 113 but still swelling and stiff what is your advice. Thank you

    • @GaryForgingOn
      @GaryForgingOn  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      My main advice is to be patient. It took over a year before I felt like the pain was finally gone. Just keep up the moving. When I had my second one, like you did, that forced me to use that first knee more. It hurt using it but in the long run it helped a lot. Then about 8 or 9 months after my second knee I took a vacation trip the required a lot of walking and stair climbing. That forced me to use the knees and made them better too. So use those knees and make them work even if it hurts now. It will make them work so much better later. I hope and pray you continue to improve and do well. You will get there. Just use them as much as you can now.

I’m walking with a cane and it’s been three weeks. Sort of hard for me to lift my right leg. Where I had surgery I’m able to do some things for myself. I was in the same place could not put my shoes on my right foot or tie, my shoes or cut my toenails. When did you see results to be able to put your own shoe on.. and I want to thank you again cause you explained it so good.
