    Left hip total at age 58. Messy surgery, painful, left leg 1 inch longer than right. Lateral replacement In 6 weeks in rode my Harley 200 miles to visit a friend. Back to the gym in 8 weeks. Right hip total at age 59. Great surgeon, got both legs equal length , not much pain. Posterior replacement. Rode Harley in 3 weeks. Left hip is very flexible, right not so much. Still work fine. I am 70 now. Both are all titanium, no poly inserts. Second surgeon would not have used all titanium if I didn’t have one already. My research showed better range of motion with less chance of dislocation. No problems. Got a job in Motorsports promotion. Rode Harley all over the country to the shows, lots of walking. I’m not so active now but hips still hanging in there. Retired last year from electrician, a/c mechanic, auto shop work. Caretaker for an animal rescue. I quit cutting down trees and climbing ladders so much.

    Thank you, Thank you. BEFORE I was scheduled for a total hip eplacement, I did as much research as I could and discovered your videos. I think you are both encouraaging and made me feel more prepared than would have. I had my surgery on February 24, 2020 and am now at home recovering. I think I was better prepared because of your videos. I am 74 years old and was very apprehensive of having the surgery. But TIME dictated that I get this done. I only had my surgery 6 days ago. My first reaction after 2 days was "THE PAIN !!!". All I remember hearing from friends who had this procedure were comments, "I was playing tennis that same day", or "I ran in a marathon the next day..." and those were NOT my experiences. But no one said "Results can vary in the pain level you have, the duration of recovery etc" then I would have been prepared. But of all the information I found YOU guys were the BEST. Everything is over now, I live in Cincinnati Ohio (probably MILES away) so why am I taking time to write now? Because I APPRECIATE the time you took to make the videos using your obvious experience. Your videos helped me very much. Regards, John Dossey

      Dang it my cat hit send. Mine was scheduled about a month after you so I got swept up in the corona virus crap. So lots of doing nothing losing muscle gaining fat and getting stiff and sore not to mention the amount of pain meds I was on. My 2 gp wanted and tried cutting me off ended up in the er and got gp 2 boss as my doc now. I do not like the surgeon that did the surgery and he knows it. I am 58 it took almost 300 days till I had it replaced it’s been 8 weeks since surgery I have cried from pain frustration being trapped I lost count. I have yelled and cussed owww so many times why wife doesn’t even flinch. I am still on pain meds I have been on so much and for so long 350 days they are having to do a slow taper off. Good news John I walk to the end of the street will OUT a limp.....then limped home. John the best to you and yours sir I do hope you recover 100% I call my surgeon Dr Tesla said that’s cause you make so much money ( he had the nuts to smile but not for long) and most Tesla drivers are dicks you drive yours till the battery goes flat then buy a new one. I called him a few other things plus I fired him. My gp is a wonderful Dr. my name is James and I live in western Washington. Good night sir

      Hannelore Devlin right on few days ago I had a knee replacement for second time at the same knee. Four years of pain and my surgeon 👨‍⚕️ tell your knee replacement is well attach. Go can go to a trip, my foot I can only go the the beach not water. The replacement were in place forget about the leg. I went to anew surgeon he found the problem and know recuperating from my surgery. I advise to everyone who needs a replacement do your homework and those guys advices after your surgery does not go to run do menial things like gardening no big jobs or extremely exercise. The swelling can long to 2 months or 2 years. Anyway
      I learn things that I do not know before. I feel better more positive and more cheerful 😃 really the doctors are good glad I found the channel.😍

    Hi! Thanks for this and the other videos in the series Docs. Thanks too, Dr Weening for the two hips (L 6/15, R 12/17)
    Two questions:
    1) is carrying my 32 pound golf bag really bad for me (as some have said) ?
    2) now able to squat again (like baseball catcher) when reading greens, feels great to be able to do again, something to avoid?

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi DeValera22. Thanks for the positive comments. Carrying the golf bag is likely not bad for you - not for your artificial hip specifically. With respect to the deep crouch, this is something that should be done VERY carefully. The deeper the squat or the more extreme the range of motion the higher the chance is that you could reach the upper limits of your implants and possibly lever the "ball" out of the "socket". Maybe not so deep. Just hit your putt harder and for the back of the cup to take out some of the break! Good luck.

    It's really awesome that you take the time in your busy lives to answer so many questions. Here's hoping that you spot mine. My greatest fear about a knee replacement is the device that is implanted in the knee. I've read that they are comprised of cobalt chrome and titanium. It sounds and looks very cringey. I'm afraid I might feel it in there and once it's in, it can never be undone. How do they determine what metals are bio compatible to the body? Do they not leach into the bloodstream?

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jenny. Yes we do try to answer every comment. So with respect to metal it is quite inert and well tolerated. There have been problems with metal on metal bearing surfaces and ions leeching into the bloodstream so many surgeons choose to use a metal on plastic or ceramic bearing surface. For the knee it is the metal femoral component on a plastic liner to the metal isn’t an issue. Great question. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did

    Hi from NZ, Docs. I've enjoyed many of your videos. Very informative. (I probably should subscribe!)🙂
    I'm waiting for my THP, and want to know if I'll still be able to take a bath after my surgery (not right after, or course, but further down the track - say 3-6 months). In my mind I think the getting up might be tricky. Would appreciate your thoughts.

Good luck to you and thanks for watching.

    Had a FALL, out of bed, and landed on my KNEE. I was totally recovered from my hip replacement, and the fall didnt appear to do any damage at all to my hip. But as my knee improves, I notice when I try to bend my leg to get to my ankle to put my shoes on, I can feel some pain in my HIP after all. I have AVOIDED going to the doctor so far. I am experiencing improvement. Is it possible that I can survive this stupid fall without any further surgery or medical attention. I am doing my exercises. I wish you guys were in Cincinnati. You have given me such good advice. I just didnt expect a STUPID fall.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I never knew that your knees were not meant to kneel on. I've done that all my life for work and anything else that I found easier to do on my knees. I did build up some kind of little cushion on them. I have since become disabled for other reasons and now that I'm feeling better I tried kneeling on them and it ain't happening. They hurt like hell. I probably will need new knees in the future as it runs in my family and was very happy to hear that you can kneel on them because I always heard you couldn't. I have acid reflux so it is difficult for me to bend over for any length of time. Great video.

    Hello docs. Had right THR in April, had right TKR 7 years ago, and had left THR 11 years ago. Still recovering before back to work, but I find cycling, either static or outdoors was best for my recovery, but I will be back playing squash soon (although limited to back court!). My first hip replacement I was back at work in 4 weeks but this time I find it much harder (maybe because I am 62?). I am also a plumber? on my knees but with padding to lessen the impact. I agree, I couldn't run even if I tried! I treat it (hip) like a new chapter in my life, what can I try now? Love your channel, none like this in UK. Love the humour.

      Hi Caron. If our calculations are correct you are 6 days from your surgery. Very exciting and very anxiety inducing for some. As far as exercises to do before, the best exercises are the ones outlined in the physiotherapy video. Work on getting your thigh muscles as strong as possible before surgery. And remember controlling pain and swelling after surgery is the best way to improve your range of motion as quickly as possible. Good luck and keep us posted! And thanks for watching and for your kind comments.

    Hi Doc's, I always enjoy your video's because of your clarity & humor. I have had my right hip replaced 2 yrs ago. My left knee replaced 1 year ago. I am now scheduled to have my right knee replaced in Sept /21. My question is when I'm walking I have pain not only from my right knee but up through the hip. The right leg is bowlegged & I assume my Surgeon will straighten my leg. Am I wrong to believe my pain is from the alignment of the leg? By the way my favorite activity is cycling.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ron. So yes they will straighten it at the time of knee replacement and alignment can cause pain further up. The hip is also doing more work because of the bad knee. Many patients find relief in the joint above and below after replacement. We agree cycling is great. All the best Ron. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.

    Thanks Docs. As usual very valuable advice. I’m 9 months post op total knee replacement now. How about stationary cycling, is that advisable and how long should each session be? I also used to belly dance n twerk, would it be ok to do this once in a while or should I avoid it. Also since my op I’ve been wearing trainers, like air max, of course there’s other brands available. I’m trying to say I find these are better types of footwear as your contact with the ground is nicely cushioned and makes walking much more comfortable for me. Probably coz I live on a hill and have to get up and down it a couple of times a day. Thank you for the videos, pl keep them coming. ☺️🙏🏽

    I recently learned about the dual mobility implant (as opposed to the traditional replacement). This seems like an interesting alternative as it provides greater range of motion and less chance for dislocation. Are you familiar with this type of prosthetic and do you have any opinions regarding it? Thanks.

      Yes Ken we are familiar and use it regularly. At this point we do not routinely use it for primary hip replacements unless there is a higher than normal risk of dislocation. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing

    Guys, I totally love your series and they helped me before and during my total hip replacement (October 2022) and continue to help me now, THANK YOU!! I take the point about running for exercise and I now mainly cycle or hike instead. On racquet sports, tennis is obviously ok (listening and adapting to any hip discomfort as you say), but can the same be said for squash/racquetball? if contact is avoided, both with other players and the walls? and taking extra extra care not to fall? Thanks again 😎

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So the issue is with the deep knee and hip bend and plant in those sports. It likely is ok but definitely discuss with your surgeon before. It is critical to stay addict so if that's your thing, that's your thing. All the best to you!

    I've been binge watching (and obviously loving) your videos since I ran across them. I will be needing a TKR in the near future. I ripped out my entire meniscus and shredded all the auricular cartilage several years ago when I landed awkwardly while running. I'm a passionate photographer, mostly of insects found on the ground. This requires deep squatting, with frequent rises. Kneeling takes too long and is too disturbing to insects to be practical. Do you think I likely be able to repeatedly deep squat and rise using my legs only over a period of several hours? Hopefully this makes sense! I exercise regularly and have good quad and core strength, but the pain is becoming unbearable.

    Talking with Docs has been so helpful and uplifting both pre and post surgery. Thanks! Regardingthis particular segment: I'm 4 months post surgery and my life is fairly normal now except that I wish I could skip! After retirement, I decided to teach preschool part time and half of my activities involve skipping. There's nothing funnier than an old gal with a total knee replacement trying to skip like a 5 year old! Will I regain that ability, ya think?

    I had a partial hip replacement 9 months ago for my left hip after an accident. I am an avid golfer (right handed) and I want to play again. I am slowly getting started again. Should I be able to play again without limitation? My good friend had THR several years ago. He has better range of motion than I do and his replaced hip feels the same as his good hip. My hip still feels pretty stiff. Do you think I will eventually achieve results like my friend's or do I need to accept my hip the way it is? Thank you for answering questions. I cannot find much information on partial hip replacements on the internet. So far, I don't like mine much. Everyone I know who has gotten a THR, including my 80 year old sister, has had better results that I had.

    When you talk about running, I think you need to mention body weight and also running speed as both these will greatly influence the impact on the joint. Some people have run ultra-marathons after hip replacement, and have done so for years. But they are all without fail light and such long distances are run at a more sedate pace than shorter distances.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Derek. The weight and pace don’t matter - artficial joints were not designed for this. Yes some people to choose to run on them but this will ultimately lead to premature wear. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did

The Hip about 10 yrs or 12 yrs ago and my knee about 6 yrs ago. All were bone against bone and when it's like that There is no relief in sight except for the Replacements. All caused from when I was younger I had broken bones from Motorcycle and Snowmobile Wrecks Broken bones. Ih yea same year I had my knee replaced I had a six hr neck and spine surgery. And that one was also from years ago. Having all that done I am ever so Greatful to Jesus God and my Gaurdian Angel's. I feel so much better with far less pain. When it's cold outside I might get aches from the cold but not that big a deal. Before I go. Have to tell you something kinda funny
    When I had my hip replaced I have also Myasthiena gravis and with that I couldnt have the normal Anesthesia when they put you out. They have to give you something else I was out and don't remember but the Dr when he started the power saw I awoke and started talking to him. Dont remember tho. one week since total hip R. I am 61 and determined to surf and snowboard. Both sports require what I think you mean by "planting and twisting" I understand there is the risk of a fall or wipeout or any accident but how would the required body motions like bending the knees and twisting at hips and upper body using leverage to turn the board and leaning into turns etc hurt the replaced joint? I have enjoyed these sports since I was a little kid and maintain a high level of fitness. I've been slowed down a lot but I don't want to quit.

    Hello. In July 2022 I had both knees totally replaced. My left knee was bone on bone and the right knee was almost just as bad. With that in mind I wanted and needed to prepare myself for the surgery. I came across the informational videos of Doctors Zalza and Weener and boy did I make the right decision. I watched as much of their videos as possible, that included 1am - 6am. This of course drove my wife crazy, so being the nice person that I am, I moved to the recliner. I'd watch videos of the actual process which further allowed me to understand what I was in for and what needed to be done. Doctors Weener and Zalza spoke in a lighthearted yet informative manner including a fair amount of humor. They were like a medical tag team. I recommended that a friend of mine watch their videos before and after their surgery. In closing, I'd like to say that these two guys are great, and did a wonderful job at putting me at ease.

      Hi Ronald. First, thanks for your support for the last 4 years. With respect to your hips, some patients have bilateral hip replacement. It is less common than bilateral knee replacement. Best to discuss your situation with your surgeon to see if it's possible. The main risk is a slightly higher risk of complications as we age. Best of luck to you. • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ken. Thanks for your question. We think those activities are very interesting but may be difficult to continue at the same level after knee replacement surgery. The main issue will be deep knee flexion. Ultimately the decision to replace your knees has to be based on pain and the goal of improved function needs to be carefully assessed preoperatively to avoid disappointment. High impact activities in the setting of a knee replacement can lead to premature wear. These are all very good questions for your surgeon. You can likely continue to teach but may have to modify it somewhat. Hopefully that answer helps. Good luck and thanks for watching.

    Hi Docs, I teach dance and choreograph, and I need a tkr (severe osteoarthritis in all compartments). The odd thing is that I have no ACL nor PCL--due to injuries during my dance career YEARS ago, which is probably why I developed traumatic arthritis. I was largely asymptomatic up until very recently. I also run, but not much and not often. You've said that TKR doesn't help with instability, which is what is bothering me now, but given that I haven't had the supporting ligaments for years, wouldn't the TKR help with that?

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lorien. A total knee replacement can definitely help with stability. The implant design does the job of the ACL and often the PCL depending on whether you choose to save it or not. So for you it will help your knee feel more stable for sure. Sounds like you have lived with it for a long time. Good luck with your procedure and keep us posted. Thanks for watching

      @@TalkingWithDocs Thanks Docs! That helps with my decision making process. Yes, I've lived with it a long time, but as I said, largely w/out symptoms. I'm pretty sure I spent the last part of my dance career on one ligament (that included jumping & turning A LOT). So either I have a very low pain threshold or I figured out how to move without the help of ACL/PCL. But now, well, different story. I actually wouldn't even consider a knee replacement except that I need to continue to be able to move pretty vigorously, and it's getting harder to do. So thanks again.

      Hi baloo the bear. Yes there are many factors. Patient health is probably number 1. Surgeon skill 2 and the implant probably 3 as the implants are all actually quite similar. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

    Why I am looking to have Hip Resurfacing vs Total Hip Replacement....much more likely and able to return to everything you want to do without as many concerns, especially 6 month to a year after surgery.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tom. Some people favor resurfacing. Each procedure has unique risks and benefits. Have a chat with your surgeon. Thanks for watching and subscribing

    • @tomm8025
      @tomm8025 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TalkingWithDocs - The only issues you hear about resurfacing is metal ions, but that risk is low and now even lower since they identified why some people had more friction....and femur neck fractures, which of course isn't possible in THR because they cut it entirely off. Seems more risks involved in replacements. Additionally, if a revision is necessary, you can simply go to a THR from a Resurfacing, but revisions from THR is much more complicated.
      I understand Resurfacing isn't done on many women due to higher rates of osteoporosis and smaller bones, but for males under 60, especially larger framed males, who are active Resurfacing is much better option for living life the way you want......simply take it easy the first 6 months and monitor metal ions levels going forward.
      Just seems it's less common because it requires additional training and certification on top of the procedure taking more time and that good candidates for resurfacing is a smaller percentage of the population with hip issues.....thus many surgeons would not see it as worthwhile to obtain the training and spend the time and money to learn it.
      Am I missing something? Love to hear it if I am!

    Hello, Docs. I am on my second day (June 15) post op total right hip arthroplasty. I am doing well and not in pain. Trying to figure out what I can do. Can I lift weights with just my upper body? Can I ride a stationary bike? I have two international conferences coming up in the end of July and beginning of August. Is it too soon? Should I cancel them? Thank you for any insight.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So this should always be discussed with your surgeon but we would say yes to the weights. Probably no to the bike for a little while. We recommend no travel at least for 6 weeks and often 12 but see how it goes and reassess. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joseph. So yes they are. Like most activities you need to weight the risks versus the benefits. The main risk would be falling and doing damage to your implant. We would say paddleboarding over surfing. Hope that helps.

    Someone asked your opinion of Dual Mobility Implants, which increase joint mobility and lower the risk of dislocation. From reading, they seem ideal for people involved in highly mobile sports, like me with aerial silks, involving a lot of hanging upside down. Why are they not used much more frequently or even as default? I see no disadvantages.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Judy. The main issue is when there are more parts involved there are more potential locations for failure. As well as cost.

    My question is not the joint itself but the muscles and ligaments that work the knee. I am 80 and replacement is recommended but most of my pain is in the muscles and ligaments, how much relief can I expect with the muscles and ligaments?

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jeanne. It is hard to say. If you have severe arthritis hopefully the majority of pain will go away once your knee is replaced. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.

      good question and not answered by the Docs. I would advance this question one further: how about riding a bike on the road? I suspect one fall off the bike could be really bad!

  • @IrmgardWiesner
    @IrmgardWiesner 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What you should not do, is stand up in a bus before it has stopped. I did that, fell because the bus made an unexpected turn - the result was a bad fracture of the femur which needed a third knee replacement. Back to field zero, after I had worked for a year to make again a two-hour hike, after having one hip and two knees replaced within a year.
    Doctor told be, that I might do everything except falling. OK. No mire bike, no more downhill skiing, no more cross-country skiing. Snowshoeing is possible, also hiking in moderate terrain (needs some planning in the alps), at home the elliptical is ideal.

    I previously assumed that running is ill-advised because it would crack/pit the metal, but if it's just the plastic, you can replace that as many times as you want, can't you?

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi ziiip. So you can replace the plastic however as it wears it causes an inflammatory response that can weaken the cement bond and lead to loosening. Each time your knee replacement is revised it becomes more difficult and the outcome less predictable. In general, it is simply better to find an alternative to running for exercise. Hope that clarifies things. Thanks for watching.

I am 73 old and been a long distance cross country hiker and it sounds like I will be limited to my passion in the future. Am I correct? Please say No. What happens when your hip replacement is dislocated? Thanks and keep up the good work!
