Saved from the Salvage Yard! 1974 Chevrolet K5 Blazer 2WD conversion! Budget Build Squarebody!

  • I picked up this derelict 1974 Blazer that can be seen in the junkyard tour video for $100. The axles and some other parts had been long gone but I've always wanted a 2WD Blazer and the full removable top makes it even better! I located a 1977 Chevy C10 2WD donor pickup for the suspension and other trinkets and used my 1975 Chevy G30 van from the burnout video for the drivetrain. Follow along as we get this scrap heap back on the road!

I remember my dad's Blazer. He had the Rally wheels with F78-15 Firestone Town and Country snow tires on it. The good old days! I remember going to school in it. All the kids thought it was a pickup with a camper shell on it. I don't know what would make them think that. This is definitely a rig worth keeping. I'd use it as a tow rig.

Another great video. I know it needs a lot of work, but I really like this one. My favorite quotes of the video, "19 gallons of weed killer," and "How dare you!" Now you have me wanting to go to the junkyard and get an old K5 blazer to save. Most of ours want .25 a pound for one, so you got a great deal on yours. I say white wheels, dog dish hubcaps and whitewalls.

@Mortske its kinda hard to tell on my phone but it looks as if that quadrajet is missing the little sheet metal plate that stands up at the carb stud between the primaries and secondaries. Without them plates on there that carb will have an eternal bog. Ive built 100s of them q jets for stock vehicles up to 450hp street cars and dont know why but without that plate itll bog everytime the secondaries. I learned very quickly that just because I’m a welder it doesn’t mean I can repair a radiator lol my brother in law dinged the rad on a 1939 John Deere B when we were trying to bring it back to life after 25 years of sitting (lots of mouse poo between the rad and the shutters we were cleaning out). The core alone is 300 bucks and the tanks and main supports are big castings that bolt together and encase it, so there’s gaskets at both ends and they can leak easily if you’re not careful. Overall they’re a pain to replace (heavy, hard to get to, lots of stuff to get out of the way to pull it, blah blah blah). So me being a welder who frequently tig welds pipe that gets Xrayed thought “I’ll solder that hole shut, no problem, I got this” so I grabbed the ol benzomatic and went to work. I didn’t have it, I wasn’t even close to having it, I blew a hole through what was left of those poor tubes before I had a chance to get the solder on it. Long story short, I bought a new core and will no longer try to fix my own radiators 😂

Sigh...I miss my K5. I even found a rust free southern tub for it and "countryboy restored" it from the ground up. It was a mud truck but it was in amazing shape when I was done. I ended up having to sell it before I could even drive it after the rebuild. It had a peanut headed 1979 454 with no real hp to speak of but plenty of torque to keep the 42" swampers turning. I haven't hit a mud hole in 17 years but I still hope to build another K5 someday for a daily driver. Great vid, sir!

You Did gooder. I had a 73 Jimmy K5 loved it, utill I got rear ended while I was stopped he was going 45mph. Loved the removable full top. and Yes Put some quarters on it they are not to hard. The wiring on those are pretty easy, I added Power windows to mine. but there is a difference in widow rollers. but be careful the square bodys get additive. I have 3 right now (1977 GMC C10 panel truck 1980 C-10 GMC and a 1986 Chev C 20.) and have owned 12, 'Shivers' , Enjoy!!! Keep the content coming.

Get out more yes. But it seems like I only get transmissions, transfer cases, and rear ends to change or repair on '02 thru '12 or so suburban's tahoes or pickups Chevy or GMC with 30-in wheels and spinners. I try telling them when you put 30-in rims on a truck like that it's hard on the drivetrain. Even with a 373 gear which is real common in most of the 1500s. I just missed the old school stuff I miss my Rockwell 205 back when they built stuff tough.
