1972 GMC Ramp Truck Hauls it's first load in 30 Years! Huge Failure!

  • After updating the brakes and tuning up the 1972 GMC 1 ton in the previous video, we still needed to install a fuel tank behind the seat, install a rear brake line and fix a massive transmission leak. We still need to test out the winch and see if this thing will actually haul a vehicle yet! So let's get after it! Since this truck is a family heirloom it is NOT FOR SALE! As always, thanks for watching!

    A) Put an 4L80 in it. Takes care of brute strength and OD. Also lowers your first gear, so take off is far easier and safer.
    B) Yank the junk gears and put a set of 3.73:1 Gears in it. You'll have plenty of pulling power and not be stopping at every fuel station.
    C) Extend the ramps toward the cab only lower the angle to put more weight on the front axle. You will appreciate this when at high speed on the freeway!!
    D) GOOD or BETTER LED tail lights.
    E) bright work lights aiming toward ramps and under what you want to haul. Makes night hauling a breeze!!
    F) AT LEAST chain locks for the ramps. To keep them from falling out or being stolen.
    G) HEAVY DUTY "D" rings on the back end of the ramps for tie down..
    H) You might consider cutting off the inner angle of the ramp beds and adding 2"x3" angle to the inside so you can pick up most of todays cars and baby SUVs.
    I) Replace all your cooling system and belts before heading out for more than around the block.
    J) I nearly forgot, A LARGE tranny cooler will help keep you out of transmission hell.. The in-radiator types SUCK unless you live in the cold North... lol..... (I used to)!
    This is all far better to have than not and you break down somewhere, especially in the dark. Bring Duff for protection!! ;)

    Love the GMC Mortske! Ok on trans, my days in trans shop, we saw ALOT of turbo 400 governors strip the gear. They are a nylon material and heat and age make the hard. Plus the forward and back movement under stress, IE towing, 4x4, dump trucks, etc. its a simple fix. Do a fluid reading IE sparkles, mud, burnt you’ll know that smell from 10 miles away lol. That kick down solenoid must be hooked up and working for proper line pressures, it will lead to burned clutches trying to apply with low pressure if it applies at all. Don’t count out vacuum modulator, check for vacuum signal, fluid present at intake (thru the line) newer ones are adjustable. Also when I’ve done those long runs of brake lines in trucks, I’ve taken old one off (in pieces sometimes lol) I use them as a template OUTSIDE the truck. Its way easier to flare ends and make all the appropriate bends. Also as for the end nut, OMG yes I too have done what you have several times lol. So I now use blue painters tape, I slide on nut, then tape the line to keep it on. It works great most times. Not always but its my tech tip lol. That truck would look great hauling one of your hot rods! Also if you do install a 4L80 trans will you please film the swap? Thanks again

    • @thecollectoronthecorner7061
      @thecollectoronthecorner7061 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ive used a lot of trucks with automatic trans. And every one I eventually ended up pouring fluid in them. I can take them apart and fix them. and have done so many times. However in a using working truck. The best fix that will hold up and last is to change the truck over to a stick trans.

    Put a pully on the vehicle you're loading up. The winch cable goes through it and back to anchor on the ramp truck. That will half the speed and double the pulling power.

    That warn winch is a very sought after by off roaders. I had one on my jeep TJ and people were always trying to buy or trade for it. It is a little quick . I believe that harbor freight has a wireless remote that will work. I emailed a pdf on the winch. Shift prob may be your governor gear is apple cored I ve had that happen a time or 2.

  • @highiron1950

    It would require modifying the angle of the winch, but I believe you could extend the ramps forward quite a bit which would help your weight and balance.

    Good video! This project's coming together nicely. I'd stick with the TH400. OD transmissions work fine but, when swap cost is factored in against wear + fuel, the upgrade is rarely justifiable. But I'm preachin' to the choir.

    • @TestECull
      @TestECull 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eh, swapping a 5-speed manual in there will pay for itself within the first 500 miles from recouping the 30% or so fuel lost to torque converter slip and general automatic trans inefficiencies. First thing I'd do with this truck if it was mine would be to stick swap it.

    Harbor freight has a wireless winch controller for $40. Not sure if the plug is the same. You could use a snatch block to double your pulling power and cut speed in half. It's always a very good idea to secure your ramps.

    • @robertjoslinjr8536
      @robertjoslinjr8536 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any idea if that wireless controller is instant on and off? My winch has a wireless controller but it's on a relay and runs 2 second bursts minimum!! 😬 I agree with your feedback! 👌🏻 I was thinking the same thing about the snatch block

    43:55 5-speed manual swap sounds about right to me. Lose the 30% loss inthe converter you've got now AND get an overdrive gear or two to boot. And be able to bump start it if that starter ever goes out...

    • @bizznackywhirle5437
      @bizznackywhirle5437 ปีที่แล้ว

      The "easy" thing to do would be one of those Doug Nash/US Gear overdrives that bolts on in place of the TH400 tail housing. The hard part is finding one and hoping nothing is broken on it.

  • @Bigtiny123
    @Bigtiny123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Nice truck! I would swap in a 700r4/4L80 for overdrive,you should be able to find one the same length and I believe the drive shaft yolk is interchangeable between them, plus it would be cheaper than a overdrive. Also throw a set of airbags in her for overload or fill the front bumper with weight.
