That's why you'll see them look around the level for two seconds and immediately know which way to go, and I think it applies here as well. They were probably like, "well given this layout it's most likely the entrance would be here," and were prepared to check other likely spots if it wasn't.
I'd describe it more specifically as "pattern recognition." The level layout isn't COMPLETELY random, there are rules you can pick up on if you've played for like five million hours lol
