Episode 158: Christian Crossland | Suffer the Little Children Podcast

  • Christian Crossland spent most of his short life in the care of family friends, Brittany and Trevor Easton, who took Christian into their Indiana home and loved him like their own. In January of 2022, Christian’s biological mother, Chelsea Crossland, took him back from the family who doted on and adored him. In under three months, Christian was dead.
This is the story of a little boy with a bright smile and a personality to match. It’s also the story of the woman who gave birth to him, let another family raise him, and then spent 74 days systematically starving and ultimately beating him to death.
This is the tragic story of Christian Crossland.

I will never understand a parent with the ability to sleep peacefully each night knowing that there own child is in the next room starving, scared, in pain, and heartbroken that the mom that is supposed to love and protect him is the one hurting him. Feeling that he did something to deserve it. When he deserved so much more and had with another family. He laid there thinking about the mom that loved and fed him and why he has to be there with a monster that treats him with so much hatred. If only I could be there to tell him how much he was loved and how special and wonderful he was?

Cases like this really turn my stomach. As someone who has struggled with an eating disorder most of my life, I know firsthand exactly how uniquely torturous starvation feels. Your body hurts, your brain gets fogged up to the point where you can't think straight, cuts and bruises don't heal and you can almost feel your body breaking down. It's one thing when it's self-imposed but I cannot imagine the absolute torture of it being inflicted by the one person who is supposed to take of you. This poor child, it's absolutely heartbreaking.

I have 3 boys who eat me out of house and home. Loved the day they started making their own snacks.
Am also one of those mums who believes that if a child comes home with clean clothes, particularly boys, they didn't have enough fun. We used to have ours out climbing trees, climbing muddy hills, rolling down them, sliding down on their bums, splashing in the puddles etc. We all came home grass stained, muddy and wet. Best times ever for a child.
Absolutely soul destroying hearing what happened to Christian and other children like him on this podcast series.

I really appreciate the way you are so dedicated to getting the story right with multiple sources and contacting people in person. I think that's really great. You could be an investigative journalist or reporter with your skills. I feel so bad for the children whose cases you cover, but you give them more of an identity then you would ever hear almost anywhere else. I really enjoyed your coverage today. Being starved and abused on top of that, I don't know how he hung on as long as he did. Keep on going! I'll be here listening :)

She punished him for opening the fridge without asking? I'd celebrate this moment if my 4-year-old took this step toward self-sufficiency. He was forced into a cold shower because he got his clothes dirty? First of all, what child doesn't get their clothes dirty, like on a daily basis? Regardless, if you're going to get annoyed about this, then how about you teach him what to do when his clothes get dirty? As in, show him how to put his clothes in the laundry (or how to help you do it). How does putting him in a cold shower teach him to do anything that might help you? It will only teach him that you're not safe to be around, so that the next time he gets his clothes dirty, he'll enter survival mode and try to avoid you. He might even lie to you out of fear for his own safety, which will then make you want to punish harder/bigger/faster/longer. Until you've punished him to death. Don't punish children for their mistakes. Simply show them a better way, and if you find yourself losing your shit along the way, ask yourself why. The reason is most likely because someone lost their shit with you when you made mistakes as a child. And your knee-jerk reflex is to perpetuate the trauma from your past. But you can and should do better.
And another thing. It always irks me when the lawyers argue that the perp only intended to harm, not KILL, when actually killing the victim would have been an act of kindness, because the harm is so unimaginable that death would have been preferable. The law is effed up sometimes. Another effed up law is the one that exists in many states including my own (Illinois) which permits corporal punishment of children, including use of a belt as long as it's "justified." This enrages me to the point where I want to switch out of practicing medicine and go into law. Use a belt on an adult and it's assault/battery. Use on a child is OK why? Someone tell me why and how we are doing this as a human race.
Wish I could say "rant over" here but I'm not done...to be continued on other episodes 🙃

While I think everyone who seen something and didn't say something is wrong and should feel some type of guilt for not helping that baby. I find it despicable that her attorney would put ALL the blame on them when she was ultimately the one who murdered that poor baby.

Chelsea's father saying Trevor is responsible makes zero sense. He can hate him all he wants and maybe he has a valid reason to, but at the end of the day, Trevor wasn't present when Christian was fatally injured, and the other children make it extremely clear who is responsible. He's trying to shift blame from Chelsea, but fails to make any sense in his accusations.

One of the most offensive parts of this episode was learning that trevor assaulted a child and only got 2 years.
Maybe i wasn't paying close enough attention, but are Trevor - the possible father of Christian, and Trevor - Brittanys partner, the same person?

    • @SuffertheLittleChildrenPodcast
      @SuffertheLittleChildrenPodcast  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yes, that's the same guy. The thing is, I couldn't find a single hint of information about Trevor's crime besides what's on the actual registry. No news articles, no court documents, nothing. So I'm hesitant to condemn him without knowing more. All I do know is that it really appears he and Brittany showered Christian with love!

What a strange little connecting thread either way. This family dynamic is so intriguing. Could they have meant he was the father as in he was the one who actually played the father figure role? Very odd detail

Why? Why do this to any baby let alone your own? I can't understand anyone wanting to hurt children at all. Playfully teasing them is sometimes cruel.
I do want to say, since I've heard it mentioned a few times, a parent getting upset at a child for getting into food without permission isn't inherently a red flag for abuse. I grew up in a large family and we frequently faced food insecurity. My parents carefully planned and executed meals so that everyone got what they needed. We also lived quite a ways from a grocery store, so gas also had to be carefully planned and considered. We were not abused kids, and there were snack options (usually food bank food we didn't really like but ate anyways). Eating an extra bowl of cereal could completely throw off the plan, and my mom would get upset at my dad for his midnight snack of a bowl of cereal, so it wasn't just directed at kids. Just saying, it's not necessarily abusive to expect to ask before digging in to the food.

Why take these babies from loving safe homes just to torment or kill them. It’s obvious they did not want the child so why take them? I just do not understand. Not that I understand how anyone can look at a child with hate and want to hurt any child under any circumstance.

It was a horrible accident that he will have to live with and won't leave his mind for the remainder of his life. As a parent, that in itself is punishment more cruel than the death penalty. To replay that day over and over in your mind and wish you could have done it differently.... It is living a real life nightmare day after day. That is the worse kind of hell. Laine covered the issue without bias and gave the issue of hot car deaths a reality any of us could have or may fall victim to. She covered it , giving us facts we most likely never knew or even thought of before her podcast. If you didn't learn that none of us are beyond making that mistake then I hope with all my heart that you nor anyone dear to you ever become victim to the same fate.

@@LeahCopeland-sy8mdwell said. People are so cruel and judgmental. Now there have been hot car deaths that were purely from NEGLECT and shitty parenting. Those people deserve to rot and jail and in hell. But a good, loving parents who simply made a terrible mistake? They don’t deserve prison on top of what they already having to do deal with.. a mental and emotion prison and waking up everyday wishing you were waking up from a nightmare. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. People need to have more compassion.

I agree completely. None of those cases she mentioned were accidental and considering there is only ONE "scientist" who studies hot car deaths and also makes money getting parents off the hook for it in court, it was a huge let down of an episode.
