- Sonic 2 now has the best selling opening for any video game movie ever and it's looking like its sales aren’t slowing down anytime soon! One of the reasons for the movie's astronomical ticket sales are the film's dedication to the fans and the source material, specifically the video games! The sonic franchise has a very scattered lore and it can be hard to place specifics about the universe, but the movie does a great job at creating its own from multiple iterations of sonic! In this video we explore as many sonic video game references we could catch in sonic the hedgehog 2 to illustrate just how dedicated the movie is to the source material! But the challenge for this video is fitting all those references within 10 minutes. Join us as we explore how the movies draw from the games for our favorite characters like sonic, knuckles, tails, eggman and shadow! Also BIG BIG SPOILERS ahead, watch the movie before you watch this video! Lets get it!

Well I actually have two favorites which are
1. Sonic Adventure 2: it's just so much fun to play and I love the little chao garden side game they have.
2. Shadow The hedgehog: It's a guilty pleasure of mine that I loved playing since I was a teenager cause Shadow to this day is my 1 favorite Sonic character and I cannot wait to see what they have in store for the third movie!

An obscure reference is that when robotnic is explaining his evil plan he mentions putting people inside of his robots which is a clear reference to how he puts animals in robots in the games

They had the kindness to put Sonic underwater without the stressfull music, and when I saw Sonic using the bubble of air I was so happy! They respected the fans.
There was the drowning music. If you listen in sonic movie 2 soundtracks. You could hear a faint jingle of it

@@NinjerWreck nah, I absolutely adore sonic music but I think I'd be pretty cringe if they directly played music from the games in the movies. It amazes me that to this day people fail to comprehend that catchyness in music is completely a decision, not a virtue.
Sonic music is really playful (at least the well-known songs) and that wouldn't really work in a movie at ALL. It's mostly funk music anyway, there's not many scenes where you'd be able to fit that in... Unless it's one of those cringe dance scenes, but that can't happen because you need a marketable song.
The soundtrack already has some subtle references and it's just great as it is. Robotnik's theme in the movie somewhat resembles the one in AoSTH without being too cartoony for a film and breaking the tone or being distracting.
I feel like the drowning music in the movie would've been TOO much. The drowning music is EXTREMELY incidental... It's literally just a repeated alternating octave rising a semitone. Honestly I would've vomited in my mouth if that happened in the movie, way more than I did in the dance scene. It would've COMPLETELY ruined whatever emotion and immersion the scene had and almost feel like a meme because of how painfully incidental the music is. I think that having it play very faintly with strings was more than enough.
And again, don't get me wrong, sonic music is FANTASTIC. Especially Sonic 3, Sonic lost world and even Mario and sonic winter Olympic games... But that sort of music simply doesn't go well with this type of film.
If anything I'd like the orchestra to be arranged differently... maybe something that sounds more like the opening to Sonic unleashed and have robotnik's themes be more electronic.
Did anyone notice that Eggman was using chaos control to teleport after he got the master emerald? Also like how the chaos emeralds scattered like dragon balls leaving them with only the master emerald

@@sbdevon9700 They scatter in Sonic X a lot. There’s no evidence of the emeralds scattering in the main canon beyond Sonic 1.
He keeps them all from 2-3. They seemingly scatter after Adventure 1, considering they need to be found again. Tails even gets 1 of them in SA2 as a reward for saving the city, at least I think. Beyond that, I don’t think it’s ever mentioned whether or not they scatter.
I like to assume they scatter each time a major event with super sonic happens, but one hole in that theory is they didn’t scatter at the beginning of Sonic Unleashed. Maybe because they were drained of their power? Lots of questions!
@@jayku8857 actually if you watch the baseball part to the end you can see they have the master emerald, also the chaos emeralds land in knuckles hand after he send them away edit: ive rewatched the movie 20 times he used shards off the master emerald and made a new one like sonic adventure
I noticed that right before the Sonic 06 shoe tap finisher reference in the final scene, Sonic shares a very similar attack that he did in Metal Overlord in Sonic Heroes

When Sonic arrives at the shore after running through the sea, a small crab appears next to him. This could be a reference to episode 16 of "Sonic X", when he tries to get underwater to find a Chaos Emerald, and all his attempts are ruined by an annoying crab.
Super Sonic stopping Robotnik's robot with one hand is similar to how he did it with the Eggsterminator in episode 26 of "Sonic X".

When Sonic Tails and Knuckles do a "power bump" the top-down camera angle positions the characters in such a way that their colors match up with that of the Sonic Heroes emblem.
You'd be surprised. Some of the guys who made the movie are the guys who made the cutscene where he lightly tapped the robot.

You know, that one part when Sonic and Knuckles are fighting each other in the temple, there's this one part where Knuckles gives these multiple punches all at once right at Sonic (you showed a clip of that at 5:35)... It kind of reminds me of an episode of Sonic X.
As usual, Knuckles believes a lie that Eggman says and goes to confront Sonic, which ends in a fight. Knuckles pulls that exact move mid fight (even Sonic dodging it perfectly!!), could this be a reference to that episode?

Someone I watched it with said that it might have also been a reference to Sonic the Fighers, an old arcade fighting game, but I'm not entirely sure if he had a similar move in it.
Something else that might've been a reference though is right before that, when Eggman is about to betray Knuckles, he's about to do so using the electricity in his glove. When Eggman betrays Knuckles in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Knuckles grabs onto the Master Emerald and Eggman proceeds to use 2 tendrils from his vehicle to zap him off.

There was also a scene where Wade was riding through Green Hills and said the name "Maria" while addressing the citizens which is probably another reference foreshadowing the appearance of Shadow in the post credit scene.
Edit: You also missed the Classic Eggman suit when Agent Stone was looking for a new outfit for Eggman.

Such a good movie. It's great that the creators respect the source material, wish I could say thr same for the Halo tv show.
My favorite detail is Knuckles asking about ‘grapes’ at the end, which is his favorite food according to Sonic 3 Manuel - the game he first appeared in.
There's one very subtle reference, when Tom is watching the boys being bros, talking to Maddie about how he wants that for Sonic, there's a short shot of the hotel, with the pool, and the way it's filmed resembles the Station Square hotel in Sonic Adventure.
And that is the entrance to…. *gasp* EMERALD COAST!!!
Yes, you can definitely tell that the writers and director REALLY care about the source material they're taking from. The Sonic movies so far have earned my respect and I imagine a lot of others. And I'm not even a Sonic fan! I've just been dusting up on the Sonic franchise now since before the first move I had no idea what Sonic was REALLY about. I knew about Robotnic, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and the rings, but that's just because they're common characters with pop culture references. I had to look up what the Chaos Emeralds are. But this movie remained entertaining and even heartwarming even without me knowing anything about the franchise. So that should earn the movie creators some BIG respect.
the end credits scene with Shadow is more a reference to the SA2 Dark story opening when Eggman releases him.
I felt like they tried to sneak in a small nod to Chemical Plant Zone in the part where Maddy & Tom left for Hawaii and Sonic starts his alone at home shenanigans. He set up a track for skateboarding on, and as he zooms around we see portions of the curvy track that have the yellow and black caution stripes like you see a lot in that level.
5:22 FINNALLY, SOMEONE TALKS ABOUT IT
Sonic 2 is just amazing. It is such a great movie even better than the the first movie. It is alot of fun. Jim Carry is even better than in Sonic 1. He is way funnier and even more intimidating even creepy sometimes he was in the predecessor. Robotnik knew that he is evil and just had fun with being the villain. The freindship with his assistant was a nice little touch, which gave him more dimensions. And the ending, oh boy the ending was so freaking epic. It really felt like an epic bossfight in a video-game, just how it should be. And they handled the growing freindship between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles really good so you are invested in their interaction and you just want these three as freinds together.
I gotta confess, I thought we were gonna get Metal Sonic as Eggman's back up plan if failing to defeat Sonic (for the film Sonic 3). But Shadow? It's going to be a literal Sonic Adventure 2: The Movie, and we'd expect to see comparison videos soon after the premiere! But it would be nice if we'd see Super Sonic flying to angel island and grumpy Knuckles taking away his powers, not because he is the villain, but maybe telling Sonic that the chaos emeralds are not to be taken lightly.
And he just felt more like Robotnik instead of just Jim Carrey being a narcisstic jerk
@@Ladywizard yeah. He became to this character. This is the best villain role he ever played. He is just so damn great. Even his introduction was so damn awesome. He even didn't give a damn he hurt someone for his egoistic plans. And he was even sadistic, destroying the home of Sonic's human freind for the second time and just smiling at it and even eating popcorn while Knuckles beats up Sonic in their first encounter.

Missed the part where Sonic fight's Knucles, he references a move first appearing in SA2, the bounce. In the game, he can equip the bounce bracelet to jump higher. He can also use it as an attack

Hopefully Jim is still gonna be Eggman cuz he said he’s retiring from acting. Eggman not being there wouldn’t be the same.. It’s a low chance that he won’t retire yet because Jim likes doing the role so much

@@XxGamerLordxX I think Sonic Movie 3 is going to be his last acting role. Since his wish is he wants Eggman in Sonic movie 3 to be fat. So there's a chance he's going to be acting again.
The "M.D." before the date (at 4:00) might stand for "Mega Drive", the name of the Genesis outside of North America.
It was called Sega Mega Drive here in the UK because of copyright issues. There was already a Genesis model computer by another company, So Sega had to change its name to Sega Mega Drive. I only knew it as a Mega drive for a very long time!
That would be a nice callback to the first movie, which had a street sign reading "MEGA Drive"
Pretty cool that they referenced some of the Sonic games for the GameCube (Sonic Heroes and Sonic Riders).

I seem to remember Knuckles jumping on the side of the eggmobile and flying away at the end of the levels. Like he did after the avalanche in the movie. Ive been looking for a video to show the kids. Maybe im just remembering wrong though
Anyone else notice in the end credits, the animated ice cap bit features Sonic going off a ramp that is the same design as the ramps in SA1’s ice cap? That checkers pattern will never leave my head from trying to complete that one snowboarding mission in DX…
At the beginning of the the movie when Sonic’s stopping a robbery, the bombs in a basket all flare up at once. It sounded kinda like the bomb explosions/airship destruction sound effect
Stone searches for outfits for Robotnik on computer before he comes back. One of the outfits he cycles through is the classic Robotnik outfit from the Genesis games (although it just doesn't look right on a not fat enough yet Jim Carrey.

Super sonic reference and chaos emerald abilities was awesome reference. Makes me think of super sonic and hyper shadow in end of sonic adventure 2 i hope to see that one day in movies

There are MANY TV show & comic references as well in the Movie!
The "do i look like i de need your power" "for a big guy named Knuckles you are really bad at punching" and the whole Knuckles teaming up with Eggman is a direct reverence to Sonic X ep 5 where Eggman tricked Knuckles and fought Sonic.
I think I noticed half the references when watching the movie but I can't believe that wasn't the end of it either.
I was also incorrect with some of them too, like the Master Emerald hiding place looked similar to Light Gaia's final form in Sonic Unleashed.
There was also one reference which Sonic releasing the emeralds from his body to make the world a better place. Which might've referenced Sonic 1 at the end when you get all the emeralds.
The Eggman logo in the transformed coffee shop is a bit of a goof, because when Stone sees Robotnik at the beginning of the scene he's surprised by the new big moustache, but the logo on the screen he uncovers seconds later already has the moustache

The part of the final battle where Eggman says that they should just let bygones be bygones trying to get Sonic to drop his guard made me think of the intro of Unleashed. The difference is he doesn’t fall for it in this movie.
I think that the attack Sonic and Tails did in the final battle when they do a doin or something together was a reference to a thing they can do in Sonic 4 ep 2
The emblem on the back of tails's tornado is the classic Sonic emblem combined with a spring from the games
i think the snowboarding scene was a reference to white acropolis, personally, but that may be because i was obsessed with sonic 06 as a kid.
The camera anglewhere sonic explodes the sewer and the four manholes burst into the sky is a reference to one of my favourite cutscenes from Sonic, the Adventure 1 opening

Nah it's more referencing Sonic 3.
It's a reference to the ice cap zone in sonic three, in the first level for it sonic goes snowboarding down a slope and he then goes underground into ice caves. These caves, like the rest of angel island, are connected to the ruins just like in the movie.

In final battle, after Sonic cuts away the top of Egg Robot, Robotnik tries to talk to him "Let's bigons be bigons" - that's very similar to his trick in Sonic Unleashed intro.
Awesome video. I saw a game reference with the little crab that woke up sonic when he first got to the island
I'm not entirely sure about this one, I've only seen the second move once, but when Sonic gives himself a mohawk at the start that could be a reference to _Sonic Underground,_ a somewhat forgotten-about TV series.
In my opinion Sonic snowboard scene is a reference to Ice Cap level from Sonic Adventure, also Temple with emerald looks like Lost World level from Sonic Adventure as well
I think the place they found the Chaos Emerald and the way it was positioned on it refers to the Hidden Palace that would appear in the Sonic 2 game. They cancelled the Hidden Palace in Sonic 2, but you still can check it in the beta version of Sonic 2, and access the deleted data from the stage, (without any data) in the original Sonic 2 game.
Hidden palace wasn't canceled, they reused it in sonic 3 and knuckles as the temple in the depths of Angel Island where the Master Emerald (and if you got all the chaos emeralds in the sonic 3 portion of the game the super emeralds) are kept. The ruins being underwater can also be a reference to the hydrocity zone from sonic 3 which is also in Angel Island and is underwater.
Great list and the most complete I've seen so far. In the fight between the Egg Robot and Sonic Robotnik even says SNOT ROCKET before the robot blocks one of its nostrils and shoots fire at Sonic on the bridge, it perfectly resembles the fight against the Master Emerald-powered Egg Robot at the end of S3K :)
the bridge section had me getting flashbacks of SNK+3 final boss with the fingers. i memorized all the genesis games, and that bridge sequence was highly reminiscent of it.
Sonic actually uses a variation of a power up you get in Adventure 2 while fighting Knuckles on the stairs in front of the Master Emerald. He bounces up and down over and over again on Knuckles which is a reference to the Bounce Braclet you get in that game.
This was beautiful and literally bought some tears to my eyes man this was awesome
I like how the Temple the master emerald is in is litterally a labyrinth zone reference
When Sonic is about to run through Labyrinth Zone, the camera pans behind him just like in Sonic Unleashed.
The story element of robotnik turning knuckles against sonic is in sync with the story used in sonic 3, same with the showdown between sonic and knuckles in the temple, this showdown happens in the hidden palace and after sonic defeats knuckles they team up just like the movie.
There is a scene in sonic 2 where sonic is running across a bridge i think and the giant egg robot kinda creeps up into view. To me it was very reminiscent of the way a boss would appear in the side scrolling boss battles in 3d sonic games like unleashed.
You missed the use of Barracuda by Heart in the wedding rampage scene. It's a reference to the level select cheat in Sonic 3D.
a obscure reference you easily miss when Sonic is getting to run through Hidden Palace the camera turns and Sonic does one of the getting ready poses from Sonic Unleashed or Generations before taking off
They mentioned Knuckles liking grapes twice I think. That's explicitly mentioned in the original Sonic the Hedgehog 3 manual for Sega Genesys.
The iconic sonic vs knuckles pose featured in the sonic 3 and knuckles kles CD-ROM for windows 98 can be seen during their fight in the Master Emerald Temple.
There's sort of a meme reference when Robitnik tells knuckles that he'd be happy to "show him the way"

Wow, I didn’t catch some of those deeper callbacks. Especially that Tikal quote. Great video! A few things unmentioned were the scene of Knuckles climbing up the side of the cliff just like he does in the games, the fact that Knuckles “can” swim, Knuckles riding the side of Eggman’s pod just like in S3&K, and Super Sonic.

When he dropped his rings is a reference to him dropping rings when he's hit.
When he's going through the maze we hear the sound affect of him being hit before he crashes through the wall.

you missed one. the 3 masked people that showed up before knuckles at mushroom zone in the beginning, were the babylon rogues!
When Knuckles asked sonic if ice cream had grapes in it it was a reference to the manual for sonic 3 where it said Knuckles' favorite food was Grapes

Shadow's intro isn't just a refrence to heroes the capsule design is a 1:1 recreation of the capsule he was in in SA2

The snowboarding sequence is most likely a reference to Ice cap zone from Sonic 3.
A few others I noticed was a mural of perfect chaos in the background of the ice cap temple, and while the interior of master emerald temple was based off of labyrinth zone, I think the exterior was based off the temples used to recharge the the chaos emeralds in sonic unleashed
They did more than just reference Sonic games, they also did a megamind reference having to do with the black mamba suit and eggman's ruler suit. If you watch Dr. Stone browsing around the suits, you'll see what I mean.
After Knuckles throws Sonic, Tails picks Sonic up, spins, and throws him, referencing Sonic Mania Adventures. SA-2 is the GUN helicopter that Sonic is held prisoner on in the SA2 Hero opening cutscene. Tails' translator (like you said) is a reference to Colors, but it also messes up what Sonic and Tails said, further referencing Colors. The Emerald's temple also houses quite a few references from Lost World (the stage from Adventure, not the game) specifically with the fire traps and boulder chase sequence. Tails isn't Tails' middle name, but rather a nickname. Also Tails' past of being bullied is a reference to his origin in the games. Knuckles breaking the Emerald was a reference to SA2. The GUN logo took heavy inspiration from it's appearance in Shadow.
When Sonic, Tails and Knuckles fist bump, they are placed exactly like the Sonic Heroes logo

another thing i think is a reference is from sonic unleashed when eggman is trying to get on sonic's good side to distract him to land a suprise attack like he did in the game but in the movie it didnt work

How has no one picked up on the reference to the Babylon Rogues yet??? They're introduced as the bounty hunters, look at their helmets. They all have specific designs that look exactly like Jet, and similar to Wave and Storm.
I still have not seen a single video mention these guys yet and its driving me insane. Someone please finally acknowledge this reference. The first guy even sounds like Jet when he's yeeted away from Eggman!!!
It is unfortunate they didn't use more sonic game music. While watching the snowboard scene it would've been epic if the ice cap zone music played in the background
I am happy that they actually listen to the fans and adjust the movie from feedback and are using the games as source

There was a scene where Tails grabs Sonic by the arms so Tails can lift him up. Which is a reference to Sonic the hedgehog 4 episode 2 and Sonic Mania

not a game reference, but there are memes of Uganda Knuckles who always say "Do you know the way?", and in the movie's first meeting between Robotnik & Knuckles, Robotnik will say "I can show you the way"
When sonic calls knuckles knucklehead that’s a reference from sonic adventure
I don't know if it's a reference or not, but I recently replayed SA2. And I noticed during one of Knuckles and Rouges cutscenes, that after Rouge gives him the emerald shards (I think) Knuckles does fix the emerald when he scoops it up! And near the end of the movie, after movie Sonic disperses the 7 emeralds, Knuckles fixes the shattered master emerald by cupping it in his hands! Maybe it's a reference, maybe not. But that's all I could think about when I saw that scene in SA2 LOL.

in sonic boom, episode 1 season 1, Sonics exact words were “I promise I will never let this happen to you again” when tails was unconscious after getting in a plane crash.
