    “Fuck” is probably one of the best quotes in the alien series. Just the way it’s delivered and the scene just makes it so perfect.

    I LOVE Alien 3 Assembly Cut. The aesthetics and the mood are great, and the characters are very memorable to me.
    It cracks me up how 85 attacks the company folks and then gets shot to bits at the end. That's why they call you 85.

    here's what I found out when you were talking about the author of the novelization:
    Originally, Alan Dean Foster wanted his adaptation to differ from the film's script, which he disliked. Chiefly, he wanted to keep Newt alive. According to Foster, "My thought ... was to explain that her capsule was damaged and that she would therefore have to remain in deep sleep until it could be repaired. That way, she remains alive but inactive for the duration of the story, Ripley's motivation to fight to remain alive in order to sustain her is maintained, and Newt's status being iffy (she can live or die at any time) adds another element of suspense to the film." Foster also drew up back stories for many of the inmate characters, to add additional motivation for them.However, the producers responded that he was not permitted to alter the storyline and rejected all of the material he had planned to include. As a result of the experience, Foster later turned down the novelization of Alien Resurrection.
    That would have been a thousand times better than killing her off.I know it's probably stupid,but I have a strong aversion to killing children in anything! Unless that kid was the spawn of Satan and had no chance of redemption,you DO NOT kill innocent children!

    • @sillypinkette
      @sillypinkette 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Very true. And I believe Alan's giving the inmates back stories would have made the story MUCH more enjoyable. I enjoy a lot of good character development, so, the fact that Ripley and the Doctor (forget his name) were pretty much the only ones with a personality (that I could enjoy (or at least stomach)) is what really ruined the movie for me since I really don't think it is nearly as bad as other people think it is. I really just hate the whole "let's rape Ripley" tension that runs for half of the movie. That was (along with what you said) one of my main problems with the movie (since I don't find rape to be a very wholesome watching experience). But, hey, on the plus side, we get Bishop and Weyland (and, yes, while Weyland probably didn't care that much whether Ripley died or not, I like to think that, "No," he screamed out had some human emotion behind it)! That's got to count for something, right? :D RIGHT!? D:

      It doesn't even matter to me that she was a child, just the fact that she went through all that crap in Aliens only for them to kill her was bull. I HATE it when movies do that, it's pointless and lazy.

    • @TheOminousFlareShow
      @TheOminousFlareShow 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Joey Matheny Pointless and lazy? I think not. Was it a misdirection? Perhaps, but pointless? Uh uh. If you've read the early drafts of the script, you'd know that the whole idea was to make Ripley... miserable. The 'wooden planet' draft was supposed to be her purgatory, and she was supposed to lose EVERYONE she loves, including Hicks AND Newt. So no, it certainly wasn't pointless, and there's enough merit in the story not to be passed off as 'lazy' either.

      Fair enough, that makes sense. I guess I'm just so used to other movie sequels killing the main or side character from the first for no reason. It can and does work, but a lot of movies do it for no reason other than the actor didn't want to be in a sequel,

  • @mattiaskarlsson9302
    @mattiaskarlsson9302 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I know Decker doesn't much like this movie, but I think it helped cement an essential part of the Aliens franchise - the nihilistic plot. The world and universe is as monstrous as the aliens themselves, and I like that aspect of it. The first one had nihilistic tones between Ripley's inability to flee the alien even by destroying the Nostromo and the surrounding universe not caring about her struggles or well-being, but because they were isolated they were in this little microcosm separate from the rest of humanity. In Aliens it was the same thing, only with more aliens, and Ripley was kind of like a beacon in the darkness and restoring order and goodness to the world. In Alien 3 all of her struggles and misery amounts to nothing, because as soon as the doors open and Weyland-Yutani runs in, everyone still dies. Including her. It feels a lot more miserable, makes the movies more horrifying, and it feels like the kind of environment a creature like the alien could thrive in.

      jetohu I personally enjoy the dark themes. The first movie is birth, the second movie is motherhood and the third movie is death. Resurrection is purgatory I guess(?) and AVP requiem is hell.
      I like the approach of that early shock leading to Ripley having nothing left to live for except killing the Alien in the prison and in her body. I think it takes balls to kill off the series main character and I think Resurrection cheapened the impact of Ripley’s death.
      If you want a separate believable head canon you should check out the dark horse comic series. There is a big chunk of it that covers Newt,Hicks and Ripley post-Aliens.
      Edit: PS if you haven’t seen the extended cut of the film I highly recommend you do. They literally add in a solid 35 minutes along with other changes that make for a better film.

    LOL. All these people insisting the Alien franchise is supposed to end dark and depressing... It makes me wonder if they paid attention to the themes.
    Alien theme: story of how one lone survivor loses her crew but overcomes drastic odds and outsmarts the 'perfect biological weapon'
    Aliens' theme : story of how one lone survivor finds personal redemption by saving a child and overcoming her worse fears by taking down the Bitch
    Alien 3: story of how one lone survivor was better off dying with her original crew since she a) fails to save this new crew b) loses her loved ones c) dies to her worse fear, and d) fails to save the world since the alien gets cloned anyway
    Only one of these has a dark and depressing theme. Take a guess which one. >_>

      I agree. I'm a child of the seventies and had the benefit of watching films and television series in which strong, independent women were becoming prominent. Ellen Ripley was, in my opinion, the greatest heroine to ever show up on a movie screen. I have yet to see a film in which the audience cheered the way they did in Aliens.
      Alien 3 had some good elements to it, but personally, I think it was a huge slap in the face to fans of the first two films. I'll take the theme of women overcoming the odds over that of nihilism any day.
      To people who say that having Ripley fall into molten lead with a monstrosity bursting out of her chest was the perfect ending for her, I would emphatically say no. Having her return safely to Earth to raise Newt was the ending she deserved and should have gotten.

      dantespimp I'm not here to argue, but please do yourself a favor and go watch the video made by Movie Defense Force on Alien 3 (just type in "Movie Defense Force Alien 3" in the search bar). He made a compelling argument on the discussion, particularly your point about how the franchise wasn't supposed to end dark and depressing:
      "First of all, screw pair of them - Newt is annoying, and Hicks is boring - but more importantly, I feel their deaths is a crucial part to the Alien mythos, as it sends a long-running and important message: The Aliens. Always. Win. This has always been a part of the series' story. Weyland Yutani tried to control the xenomorphs and they failed. Marines tried to kill the xenomorphs and they failed. The Alien is a force of nature and it cannot be manipulated or stopped. Ripley finds out they also cannot be escaped. The Alien always wins, and Alien 3 delivered that message like a sledgehammer blow.
      Now, some argued that this renders her rescue of Newt point - but I disagree. First of all, everything we do in life is pointless if you think death renders what you do without meaning, and secondly, Newt died as peaceful a death as anybody could hope for in that universe - she's been rescued from forced impregnation and then birth by chest-explosion. For all intents and purposes, Ripley succeeded in saving Newt from one of the most horrific deaths imaginable, and now she had to die a better one. A small victory in a lost war, maybe, but it was a victory. And given how awful Newt's fate could have been, it absolutely made the events in Aliens worth it.
      Ultimately, the series has always been about loss. Loss of friends, loss of family. Ripley lost everything, and Alien 3 eventually saw her lose her own life. This is always Ellen Ripley's story. The xenomorphs took everything from her, and all she could do in return was try and take them with her. It's a beautiful story. A tragic one, but beautiful. If any franchise would do right by life by admitting that we don't all get happy Hollywood endings, Alien was the franchise to do it - end it with balls.
      This is reinforced with the death of Clemens: After we spent the film liking him and just after he gives Ripley his entire tragic backstory, he's immediately executed by the Alien, because the Alien doesn't care. It doesn't care that is to share his story with Ripley. It doesn't care how much the audience might identify with him. Just because he's part of the plot, it doesn't mean he get invincibility license. This makes the Alien a credible threat again, so that anybody is free to die at that point. Again, this is what the Alien franchise is about - the Alien doesn't care who you are. You know the line: "It's unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality." To take that threat seriously, important people can't be invulnerable for the sake of it.

    • @dantespimp
      @dantespimp 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      ***** Yes, I'm aware of the soup. But happily tasting/requesting seconds of soup made from tainted sausage is no better than fanboys demanding the check. Fox execs dumped all over the artistic visions of many good writers and promising stories because it didn't sound 'profitable'. When time was up for the script, they ended mixing this with that (similar to writing an essay two hours before it's due lol). Even in production stages, they were still editing and trying to figure shit out. The vision you see in Alien is more of David Fincher trying to make turkey sandwich out of leftovers from 4 different meals. Fincher was brilliant and its because of his use of editing, way of shooting the film, and trying to amplify dark elements that Alien 3 was decent. I would've gladly accept Alien 3's entry if it had been written with an artistic vision in mind (not the result of editing and improv decisions). If Newt and Hicks were meant to die, so be it. If Ripley was meant to die, so be it. But the decisions to kill them off was never an intended move from the start, just a decision based on how to 'push the envelope' with cheap deaths because the overall story was still in limbo-land. It resulted in poor execution and plot holes (Where did the Alien eggs come from? Why didn't the company simply take the eggs from the start if they knew about them all along as Bishop insinuated? It all seemed like the work of a fanfic writer who didn't bother covering the basics) Hill and Carroll kept dancing the two-step back and forth; unable to decide whether they wanted an Cameron-like film or Ridley Scott film. And no writer satisfied them. Even the really cool monastery plot Alien 3 ended up borrowing from got hacked to bits due to time constraints (from Fox exes dicking around too much before finally coming up with something). When the film got released and failed to receive box office success, they made Fincher the scapegoat. Respect the 'artistic vision' of those assholes? Pft. Nope. Respect Fincher and the people who managed to salvage something from shit? Yep. But in no way did Alien 3 convey a worthwhile vision to be applauded. The only vision that existed by the end of Alien 3's credits was the vision of dollar signs Hill and Carroll hoped to see.

    • @dantespimp
      @dantespimp 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Kason Lyger Movie Defense Force Alien 3 has its own interpretation of the that film. I respect that. But it's not the end-all interpretation. My interpretation is based off mythical archetypes of the hero and their journey. More specifically, the journey the hero endures and the ultimate theme that follows in previous material. Both Alien and Aliens revolve around the theme of survival horror (emphasis on 'survival'). Only Alien 3 turned it into a SAW-like survival horror where there was no chance of the hero winning (playing on the theme of Irony/Fate). Worse, with Alien Resurrection, it demonstrated that all of Ripley's efforts had gone in vain since the Alien race still survived.
      Returning back to the previous themes of Alien 1 and Alien 2, yes it was about Ripley's story. And that story came to full circle after the credits of Cameron's Aliens. Ripley breathed life into this desolate alien world as a lone survivor. Even among her crew in Alien 1, she was bit of an outsider. She saw her crew killed one by one and nearly bit the dust. But Ripley was a survivor and she endured those trials. By Alien 2, Ripley was still in hell. Her nightmares made it impossible for her to live. It was on her to face her torments one last time and see to it that she 'didn't end up like all the others'. She succeeded. And not only that, saved lives.
      If we're going to talk about plot and themes, then we better acknowledge character plot devices. I'll be honest, I discarded Move Defense's assessment the moment they dismissed Newt's relevance, mostly because Newt's role is extremely pivotal. Let's set aside the fact she's a beloved fan favorite or is 'boring'. That doesn't really matter at all. Rather, let's focus on her role in the OVERALL story arc for Ripley. Newt's story parallels Ripley's own tale. Through Newt, Ripley gains redemption (an important step for the hero). Ripley doesn't really forgive herself for failing to save her crew from the previous film. And she doesn't forgive herself for leaving her child behind during her extended sleep. Ripley lost everything. Ripley survives but can't dream. Through Newt, we see her personal struggles echoed (surviving but being alienated, sleeping but being unable to dream). They are both survivors of a horror. But while they breathe, they can't really live. By the end of Aliens, though, Ripley not only overcomes her nightmare, but gains redemption from Newt. The losses she has suffered now gain a balance and the hero's journey is complete. The fact that Cameron leaves the two to sleep in space is an important metaphor. Both return to the cosmos' black womb, but now with a sense of peace.
      Alien 3's quick dismissal of Newt pretty much dumped all of that out the window. It wasn't even to make a statement, but to make a quick buck with cheap deaths. But aside from that aspect, Alien 3 isn't about Ripley's story anymore; it's about Fate now (Fate being presented in the face of the Alien). If Ripley ever found redemption Fate will simply take it away. If Ripley sacrificed herself, Fate will just laugh at her efforts (Aliens survive anyway). This type of uncompromising theme is more in line with today's slasher films like SAW, which begs the question: why even bother? If the Alien franchise was all about Fate from the start, then why waste audience's time with two movies showcasing a character that DEFIED Fate? Why spend an entire film finding redemption when Fate will swoop in and kill you and your 'redemption' off?
      The Final Destination sequels will testify how fast this formula/path becomes pointless.Fate films are only great if they don't abruptly pull the rug from under you, laugh at your surprised reaction, and then expect you to take them seriously. The quick dismissal of crucial plot devices (Newt) was definitely a rug pull. And the decision behind it felt more like a 'lets make a quick buck' and 'I ran outta ideas so lets kill this one off and start from scratch' decision, than 'let's take this into a fresh different different and execute this smartly'. I commend Fincher for scraping whatever he could to make a decent film. But when we're discussing hero archetypes and themes, Alien 3 falls short because it can't decide which direction to take things. If we're talking about getting rid of 'Hollywood endings' cliches by resorting to Fate, then the whole scene of Ripley's sacrifice was one giant cliche and a cop-out. Her death served no purpose in the bigger picture since the Aliens are still alive in Alien Resurrection. So nothing for her character comes in full circles, no real character development or additional journeys to evolve her character. We're only left with a half-committed ending.

    The rape scene helped giving some humanity to Ripley. A vulnerability we haven't seen since Alien, and even then that was all but gone in the final act.
    Here, she's not superhuman. She cannot overpower 6 muscular men pumped up on hormones and the anger their genetic defect gives them. She's a rather slender woman, not even a day out of crysleep, that has spent most of that day doing heavy and exhausting work, while being traumatized for the second time in, for her, short notice.
    Of course she wouldn't be able to wiggle her way out of that one.

Have that person be incapacitated first and then boom, her also being defeated is a logical line of events, unlike us HEARING a guy telling her "I am a murderer and rapist of womens" and yet she thinks a planet full of these ain't but a stroll in a park during daytime? She should have known better by the third fu*king movie/crisis in a row!

Despite some problems and issues with the writing these comics are still better then Alien 3 and hell Resurrection cause they continued to further explore and utilize their characters instead of killing them off like they were nothing.

      Litshttam You're probably right. Personally, I'd love to see Newt resurrected somehow, but I have doubts about this new film. Perhaps Fox would accept the notion of an alternate timeline (sort of like what J.J. Abrams did with Star Trek) , but that is becoming cliche. Also, we've seen so much of the aliens by now that we've become desensitized. I don't think Blomkamp will be able to make an Alien movie that is truly scary.

      If it were a standalone movie with a similar script... it probably would have been a good movie... not great, but good. The issue was that it was the third act standing in the shadows of Alien and Aliens, both of which are still considered some of the best films of their respective genres. As a result, people hate Alien3 because it fails to live up to the franchise.

    Alien Cubed would be an interesting movie idea. Cube/Alien crossover.
    One prevailing theory about why the bambi-burster is more advanced than a human or yautja-based chestburster: The Facehugger does not lay an egg or implant an embryo as many think. Instead, it injects a liquid containing the xenomorphs' DNA, which causes a tumor that develops into the burster, using the hoast's DNA for environmental adaptations. Additionally, most species' young are born in a much more capable state than that of young primates, birds, or marsupials. Add onto that the fact that most species also have a higher metabolism than humanoids. Combined, these suggest that a burster from most species would be better-formed than the humanod-born chestbursters.

    Personally I've always loved Alien 3, and the Assembly cut improves on it in every way [except for removing the chestburster at the end.]
    For me Alien 3 is second only to Aliens: Special edition, and depending on my mood sometimes even takes first place.
    I've always been fine with the decision to kill off Newt and Hicks the way they did. While I really liked the characters it continues with theme of Ripley losing even when she beats the xenomorphs. First by sleeping her way through he child's life and death, and then again with losing the only ones she had been able to save.
    In the end, the universe doesn't give a fuck about what you do, shit happens.

    Some of the theatricals I liked better and vice-versa. I'm pretty sure I can see the line pre-cut in the ox where hte chest opens, I also have a problem with an alien coming from a corpse (even in avp). I liked the lack of chestburster at the ending better, although I liked the puppet for it in the original. I'm just glad for some of the ideas that did not make it into the movie. Originally Hicks was suppose to be facehugged, then he dies in flight, the half-formed chestburster climbs out of his mouth and into Ripley's. Michael Bein stopped that for happening for using his likeness, be sure to thank him if you haven't. There was also suppose to be a bunch of EEVs coming from the sulaco, one was suppose to hit Ripley's, making it crash the way it did, before colliding back into the Sulaco - destroying it. Good thing for Aliens: Colonial Marines that that had never occurred, although after playing through that shit I wish it had. There were also a lot of other wierd concepts like the setting being on a space station made of wood with monks instead of prisoners.
    Such an underwhelming death for Gieger though, falling from a ladder in his own personal library.

    Also when did the alien queen from the last movie have time to lay an egg on the ship? (she was in the landing gear the whole time) How did she do it? (she lost her egg sack)
    Unless otherwise noted, it seems plainly clear that the alien egg was contrived for the sake of the plot. And that contrivance led to two beloved characters being killed off unceremoniously as well as the inevitable death of Ripley. That's probably one major reason why folks don't like this one as much as the first two. It's not that it's dark, it's that it's meaninglessly dark.

    To me the worst death goes to Dark Horse comics. Who put out a pretty good follow up on aliens basically staring Newt and Hicks. Ripley does show up later. But for most of the series it's them two. At least ten years later. Since newts an adult. They covered up the events of 2. Hicks had some confidential clause in his military contract. They had put her in a asylum and drugged the shit out of her. Until they convinced her everything that happened was in her head. Which she believed.....up until Hicks showed up for a visit. Unfortunately after three came out......dark horse changed character names and took out everything that mentioned who the characters actually were for the future rereleases. So not only does the film kill them once. It killed them twice.

    Another good review (though I loved Alien 3, more so the Assembly cut and I don't find sad and depressing endings all that diminishing....cough...Mass Effect 3....cough).
    But the reason I think that the Assembly cut omitted the chest burster in Ripley's death is because in the whole trilogy it was shown that once the alien bursts out of your chest, your then dead as a door nail. So there can be no way that Ripley is able to hold onto the Alien Queen after it has burst out of her chest.
    Thats what I think anyway.

    I like Alien 3 fine enough, but killing off Newt and Hicks is easily my least favorite thing about it. I've heard all the arguments: "It makes the movie darker and more realistic." "Newt and Hicks would have just gotten in the way." "It's a horror movie, not a family movie." "It shows Ripley will never truly escape the Xenomorphs."
    Okay, I get those arguments, but honestly, this is one of those times I don't care. I love these characters too much to care. But I'd still rather watch this over Alien: Resurrection. With all that being said, I don't hate or even completely dislike any Alien movie. But none were ever as good as the first two.

    the original idea of a wooden spaceship & a community of monks would have made a much more interesting backdrop. u can guess the idea of the alien being called a dragon comes from a more medieval setting of monks & their community. there's a lot of hints left in Alien 3 to what it could have been but much like Jodorowsky's Dune it wasn't meant to be (although HR Giger also worked on that failed version of Dune)

I would have let the character survive until the Clemens death scene (and thus transposed the sexual relations onto Hicks).

      I feel the same way. :c The second film went through all that trouble establishing Ripley and Hicks' relationship. In Alien 3, Hicks wasn't even in Ripley's radar. His death felt more like a matter of convenience than a logical plot device/outcome. Even Clemens got the boot-treatment. As soon as the film establishes a connection between Ripley and Clemens, Clemens dies and Ripley doesn't waste another thought on him anymore. I think that was the issue I had with this film and why I had such a hard time giving a damn about anyone. Everyone felt too expendable.

      Hicks it's not dead... Let me explain... The videogame Aliens: Colonial Marines, has a side story that follows Hicka right after Aliens. In there it is shown that another man called Burk got into his pod and saved him, in exchange for his life...
      And yes, the game is cannon

    Look at it this way, it could’ve been a hell of a lot worse with this movie. The comic adaptation of the earlier draft of Alien 3 was weird, dreadful, and didn’t improve things by having Newt, Hicks, and Ripley still around, especially since they were sidelined.
    But even if it wasn’t worse, I still like this movie. Not necessary after Aliens had such a happy ending, but I’m glad the movie exists. Love the almost apocalyptic atmosphere and mood of the prison planet, the animal xeno was a creepy and interesting touch, the music is great, Sigourney Weaver knocks it out of the park for the third time, and I even liked characters like Morse and Dillon and Golic.

  • @maiorciprian
    @maiorciprian 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    in some aspects I like this movie more than Alien; vast majority of people regard it as a messed up dreadful sequel but I admire the decision of breaking with the Hollywood norm of happy endings and giddy feelings in favor of a darker and grittier resolution; the real slap in the balls for the fans was Resurection and Sigourney lost points with me for accepting to reprise her role for that one especially considering that killing Ripley in A3 was mostly her idea

    I actually like ALIEN³. In my opinion, it's not as good as the first two, but it's alright. I really don't know whether or not I care about Newt, Hicks, and Bishop's death. I personally would have wanted to see ALIEN 5 made. I was curious to see how the director would take the ALIEN franchise, as opposed to the direction it took in ALIEN³.

    Kill Hicks and Newt, two beloved characters, off...screen. Screw Fox! They should have gone with the first draft where Riley was in stasis and Hicks and Newt became the lead characters. Sure there was some weird shit in that version but come on.

      Antichrist2000 yeah because using a powerloader to beat the crap out of a queen xenomorph isn't badass or anything. After going through the shit Ripley has, you would start to develop a don't give a shit attitude. With a xeno running around the last thing on her mind are the inmates potentially wanting to rape her.
