The sequel to the hit Verhoven classic RoboCop, like many sequels to Verhoven movies it does not involve Mr. Verhoven. This change of director of course results in a change of direction, which has been criticized plenty in the past. But let me just be frank here, this isn't nearly the worst follow up to a Verhoven flick I've seen. That title still sits quite firmly in the hands of Starship Troopers 2: Traitor of Mars.

Imagine if they went with the original idea: Kain gets sent in to take out his old cult, but breaks out of his directives, just like Murphy did. His girlfriend recognizes him and lays down her weapon, he does the same. He welcomes them all with open arms... and armaments matching those of the entire Detroit PD.
He returns to his role as the head of the Cult of Nuke, using the money and power they have gained to augment himself further and does not go on his own to take on OCP and DPD, but the ENTIRE CULT takes them on. And after revealing that it was OCP that created the violence in the first place, and revealing their plans for Motor City, Robocop has a moral dilemma: Does he help the cult take down OCP, or does he help OCP take down the cult?
Cybermen against each other, or united against their own creator?
    Naaaah, psychos be psychos, yo!

"Old man" was never gud. He only cared about money and reputation. When after many years I have watched robocop again, I realised several things that missed originally.
    1) There are no good characters in OCP
    2) Murphy didn't restored his memories and humanity. He realised that only shreds of his memory remain, and came in terms with his new identity.

    • @midnighter2k
      @midnighter2k 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

I disagree on the second point, Murphy did regain some of his humanity back, that's the whole point, he didn't really become his old self again, but he didn't embraced the frankenstain monster he became, the point of the ending it's that he is not only a machine, but that he is sentient.

For those who don't know, RoboCop 2 had a rocky production. It was initially meant to be written and directed by Tim Hunter, who dropped out due to creative differences. Frank Miller was brought in to pen the script, with Irvin Kershner directing. Even then, the script was constantly being revised during production, with scenes being added and dropped as shooting went on. However, RoboCop 2's novelization was SO MUCH BETTER, it features some deleted scenes and expands upon the characters and their motivations.
Lewis was originally around to lend Murphy a hand. Nancy Allen has said in interviews that the original script featured her character prominently, but the re-writes diminished her role.
A scene where RoboCop and Lewis break into Faxx's office and discover the blueprints for RoboCop 2. During the brewery shootout, Lewis gets into a fight with Catzo, Cain's right hand man. At one point, Lewis takes up a collection and visits the OCP headquarters to talk with Dr. Faxx about fixing RoboCop after being disassembled by Cain and his gang. Later, she helps her robo-partner snap out of it after he has a confrontation with his former wife. (Which I'll get to.)
One deleted scene where Cain and Angie visit OCP headquarters, and Cain's encounter with Dr. Faxx, and he stares face-to-face with the gray RC armor from the original movie.
The original script also dove deeper into RoboCop's psyche. The movie attempts to explore how RoboCop has become more human since the ending of the first, but the subplot is quickly dropped. In the scene where Robocop is pulled apart by the gang, he visions himself visiting Murphy's grave with cuts of him masker and unmasked in a surreal way.
In the novelization that utilized the original script, we get a better explanation for why RoboCop is waging a war on Nuke. Seeing the crumbling state of the city and how so much of the youth is hooked on Nuke has him worried that his son will end up like Hobb, corrupted by vice and crime. The scene where RoboCop encounters his former wife at the police station happens much later in the book. After being told by the lawyers to stay away from her, RoboCop drives to a junkyard to ponder what he has become.
"He closed his eyes and daydreamed, seeing himself frozen solid by rust. He envisioned the mighty magnets lifting his long out-modeled, creaky, corroded body toward the conveyor belt. The conveyor accepting the offering without question. The whining, flailing machine nourished itself on Robo's body, tearing it to pieces with rotating, razor-sharp teeth."
Fortunately, Lewis arrives to snap RoboCop out of his suicidal thoughts and remind him of who he is. In the aftermath of the fight between him and Robo-Cain, RoboCop notices his son amongst the crowd, and does the TJ Lazer gun-twirl to let him know that everything's alright.

I actually really like this movie probably as much as the first. You're right, they're different movies, but to me equally entertaining. IMO, they both were ahead of their time and what many movies these days emulate. Back then, they were shocking and emboldened. The over-the-top violence and action, content, and story to me were copied by Tarantino.
Nancy Allen, she was a hottie back in the day, she was definitely under-utilized.
Peter Weller, what can we say? Even back then he was legendary.
Tom Noonan, IMO a fantastic character actor edging on A-list mainstream. I can't think of a role I didn't like him in, he's great.
Did you ever watch the series? It was all cheese but fun, and Old Man turned out to be a good guy, played by Norman Fell of Three's Company fame.
I didn't know that Frank Miller produced this movie, but it makes sense. Thanks for pointing that out!

The prototype Robocop's and the final battle were always my favourite scenes as a kid. Something about them being stop-motion models just makes it more fun. Just imagine how dull and lifeless that would be now with modern cgi.

Nuke is not actually the drug, but the family of drugs, identified in the opening newscast as a synthetic opioid. When Cain is talking with the chemist, he explains the idea in detail Each color of Nuke had different effects. It's likely the more visible red was chosen to be the most-used color because it's eye-catching. But red itself is not Nuke. It's "Red Ramrod" variant of Nuke.

Decker Shado, if you really didn't get the character of Hob, the point of his character is that he represents child criminality, or, to put it another way, the message was that criminality can start at an early age. Actually, that theme recurs throughout the film with just about every child and teenager on-screen save for RoboCop's/Murphy's son in his former life. Also, the actor playing him, Gabriel Damon, was actually either thirteen or fourteen during filming and its release at the time, not ten.
I vaguely remember seeing RoboCop 2 in theaters in 1990 at the age of eight, and even then, I thought Dr. Faxx's plan for putting the brain of a psychotic, murderous drug lord/gangster into a killer robot armed with a miniature Gatling gun with a seemingly endless supply of ammo, a shoulder-mounted shotgun, knives for feet, and general superhuman strength, which could only be calmed down by being high off a synthesized version of the drug the aforementioned drug lord/gangster created in his former life, was beyond retarded. By her logic, OCP should have put the brain of a Klan member inside of it and let it run loose in a Black neighborhood. Also, nobody ever talks about the arcade where RoboCop beats the shit out of Duffy to get him to tell him where Cain is hiding out at. The arcade was filled almost entirely with video games from the now-defunct Data East, which had the RoboCop movie series license at the time.
Anyway, not a bad review. While RoboCop 2 can't hold a candle to its original, I don't think it was completely terrible; just more B-movie-ish.

  • @elricengquist9989

Yeah I wonder what it would have been like if they had it somewhat similar to the first movie, where the company is not fully bad, but it was some in the company doing evil, or atleast give some background to the ceo's change of heart. Like making it that there was a low-key struggle going on for control of the company that ends half way thru with the original good meaning ceo being forced out,a nd the second half of the movie is the new ceo being the one that basically does the underhanded actions we see in the start. Or if we keep it that the ceo was always evil robo-cop thru investigating finds out the ceo had orchestrated what happened largely in the first movie from behind the scenes, which would have made it plausible how he was acting now.
I find robo-cain funny as he looks like what you would expect a prototype robo-cop to look like, but yet they never seem to improve on the look compared to robo-cop. If the start they had the proto-type style to him it would make sense, and then showcasing him at the end in a more finished an advanced state like what you would expect from a finished non-prototype model to be in. Even Ed209 had a more finished look to him in the first movie.

Too true. The first film already completed Robocop's character arc and did all that could be done with the character while still adhering to an action movie format. The film ended on a pretty definite note too and left very little room for a sequel. What could they possibly do with the character next without it being a pale carbon copy of the first? Other than corrupt corporations, criminals and other robots, what else could Robocop be pitted against? MORE corrupt corporations, criminals and robots?! Robocop 2 seemed to think so.

    • @brandonspain12345
      @brandonspain12345 ปีที่แล้ว

@@cobius8698The novelization is FAR better than the movie. The characters were not only better developed, but Lewis was also more useful in the story rather than a sidekick to Robocop. Also, the emotional beats from the original film were originally carried over with Robocop would have suicidal thoughts throughout the story. In the scene where the gang is ripping apart Robocop, he was supposed to vision himself visiting his grave with his mask on and off in-between shots in a surreal way. The scene where he tells his wife Murphy is dead happened way later in the story and he would wonder in the same factory he was killed in and daydreams that he's stuck, with old rusted armor, decayed and falls into a compactor where he allows himself to be ripped and shredded apart, before Lewis snaps out his suicidal thoughts. Also, the movie's script kept changing from Frank Miller's screenplay, the original director considered left production out of creative difference, sideplots being taken out and added in underdeveloped new ones, budget restraints and a shift in tone. In the end, it was another studio interference movie that pissed in the recipe of a movie that had good ingredients.

For the movie the black parts on Robocop's Armor is not plastic, its Black metal. Watch the scene were Robo gets dismantled, they use a giant saw to cut Robo's waist. The Black areas look like they are meant to be metal. You can see sparks from bullets hitting Robocop in Black areas of the armor, only steel and metal would cause sparks. The first guy that shoots at Robocop after blowing his car up at the beginning of the #2, you see sparks hit Robocop in the stomach area. Real life the suit is fiberglass, rubber and plastic, but not for the movie. Robocop's armor in the 2nd movie had a very good upgrade for realism and looked much more real than the original film.

as you mention, including hob in the movie was a big mistake, it´s something that was heavily criticized back then and even now, and even hurt the movie financially
Robocop was a product of the 80s, Robocop 2 follows the same line, but in robo 1 the plot is clear and consistent, in robo 2 there are a few subplots that dont really line up; Murphy being de humanized again, the obvious unsuccessful reuning with his family, Hob...

I don't see how even OCP could affoard the cost of an army of "Robocops" since they already were in peril due to the delays in the construction of Delta City. The first Robocop program was an experiment that worked well enough, but later on when the company did many efforts to build newer versions of the program they failed constantly. "RoboCain" only worked because his drug adiction was a chain strong enough to keep him in line... yet even that failed in the end.
The truth is that despite what succes Bob Morton had with his program, the entire project was a complete waste of money in the long run, and was destinated to end up as Dick Jones' ED-209 series.

Another reason I hated the remake was because they left details like this out in favor of a more standard superhero film. Wish they made a movie about a robot cop instead.
