    Jerry - as always a fascinating video but also really liked the song 'Brother John' - harmonically and lyrically unusual with great mandolin playing :-)

    Hi Jerry, a fantastic video as always, I love this music you have made me a total convert to this style, you are a perfectionist and that is no bad thing, great job as always. Peace and Love from Bonny Scotland.

    Hey, Jerry, a quick tip to find that center line in a nicely grained top. Just like you sight down a neck to determine it's straightness or lack thereof, sight down where you think the center line of the joint is on the top. No matter how straight the grain is on it, the joint will show up as the only REALLY straight line on the top. Makes it easy to find it.
    Like always, you're doing a killer job, wish I could afford a Rosa. Guess I'll just have to build myself as close of one as I can. And after watching you do the parts I've never done, it should be easier than doing it from a book. Thanks again for showing us all how it's done.

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always do that myself. Problem is on this one it disappears when you switch from the end to the top.

    Very nice job Jerry. I can frame a house up and close it in and people think that is the hard part. Finishing it takes longer than getting it up. Still, it's looking great. Regards, Solomon

    A Siminoff neck joint, I see. I agree. From my limited experience, the binding alone is harder than the rest of it. I've seen where they've done it up with abalone. I don't know how they'd pull that off.

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've done three or four with abalone shell all the way around. It's a lot of work.

      @@RosaStringWorks I don't think I'd have the know-how to do it. I'm baffled on how they do it on a D-45. More power to you for doing that.

    My great grandfather would say, "he builds two violins, one is left on the shop floor and one is sent out to his customer."

  • @krist39
    @krist39 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Maybe someone's already suggested this, but why not print the rose in another color (like red) so that when you trace it over with your black pen, you know exactly what you've traced and what still needs tracing?

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would work great if I weren't profoundly colorblind

    • @krist39
      @krist39 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RosaStringWorks I thought of that just after I made the recommendation (been binging a lot of your videos lately, I should have remembered right away). Then how about just gray? I know, I'm trying to solve a problem that doesn't really exist.

    Amazing work as always Sir. Are the taper and dowels the traditional way to join a mandolin neck? Just curious...

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's lots of ways of joining on. I would say most are done with dovetails.

  • @markmelville6670

    Hi Jerry. I use the same joint as you do, although I cut my with a router and jig. What is that silver looking tool @ 34:08 that you use to clean up the scroll?

  • @sewing1243

    Jerry,
    Have you ever built an arch-top guitar similar to the Lloyd Loar designed L-5s?

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No only flat tops.

    • @sewing1243
      @sewing1243 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any plans/desire to eventually try your hand at one? I would suspect that a lot of what you know about building Mandolins would apply to an arch-top guitar.
