Looks great seeing how it bent and the mold. I want to do an acoustic guitar first, but I would love to do a mandolin, as I enjoy playing them, too. Looking forward to watching the whole process.
Thank you! I think I’m a little more nervous for the mandolin build. I think mainly the carving process is why. There’s a high chance I’ll end up with some expensive firewood, haha.
Very cool build. Great start. I have the same set of plans but I haven’t started building one yet. I’ve two acoustics in progress. I think once those are finished I will start the mandolin. I like the oval sound hole. I saw an old Gibson at Grunins’ with the oval hole and have wanted one ever since.
Thanks for the comment! I bought a book called The Mandolin Project and it outlines how to build 4 different types of mandolins. I’d like to try out some of the other types as well, such as the variations of flat tops with oval soundholes and such. Maybe even an octave mandolin. It’s all very interesting to me.
Looks like this'll be a fun project. Side note though: for both you and your pets, it's definitely not the best idea to let them run around your shop while you're running loud equipment and generating fine particulates.
Love your videos! I attempted to build a mandolin last year and it is a big challenge. My fatal mistake was cutting the dovetail joint mortis and tenon. When I joined the neck to the body, the angle was way too steep and I had already glued them together. I used Robbie's class for instructions and I didn't think the builder gave as clear instructions on the neck angle as Robbie does on his guitar videos. Mine was an "F" hole mandolin, it looks like you are building one with a sound hole - hopefully that course is a bit more detailed. Can't wait to see the progress.
Thanks Steve! This one is actually the f-hole one. Hopefully I can follow along. Especially with carving the top and back, which I am nervous about. I’m looking forward to it, though!
Hint: forget about the 2mm spacing.. you will have to custom fit it later anyway.. so just cut it the same outline as the mold (tou'll be surprised just how well it will fit already), and theb just sand it to fit . Saves lots of time because the contour is going to be closer than you think ..
I can strum chords on a mandolin, but I don’t truly play it. I just imagine the top 4 strings if a guitar and play them upside down. No muscle memory or anything. I’ve only strummed a mandolin four or five times in my life, including the old Martin one I have.
23:26 In my experience, every instrument demands some blood 😂 thanks for sharing, I wood advice to modify the mold so it can be opened, a little drop of glue going where it wasn't supposed to, and you are un trouble. Ask me how i know 😌
Well, it’s already glued together so I’ll have to be super careful, haha! I coated it with wax hoping to prevent any issues. I can imagine the feeling not being able to get the rims out of the mold 😅
Nice work. I've laminated the neck block using two pieces of mahogany. It works well and is very strong.
This is super cool and unique. Cant wait to see this build series. Loved the first 2 guitar builds
Thanks! I’m excited to move forward on it.

@@CMRWoodworks Hopefully not on the expensive firewood!
Coming along quite nicely
Thanks man!

Ah, good to know! Trying to get exactly 2mm of spacing was pretty fiddly and took a while.
This looks like a fun project. Do you play mandolin? I remember you made that video about the old mandolin you were given.

@@CMRWoodworks i had to open the mold with a bandsaw with the rims inside 😀 it was a tense couple of minutes
