Something to take into account is that textile industry is one of the most polluting industries. It's quite likely that many citizens suffer respiratory diceases or die from cancer. This living conditions are a factor for rebellion.
2:45 Something that has always disturbed me about these photos are the faces of the children. They look so old yet only stand a few feet tall. So many resemble grown adults residing in the body of a child, it is really grief strikening for me.
I was thinking the same thing, stress ages people years. That's why people with anxiety get hair loss.
I have a personal headcanon that District 8 boasts the highest disabled population within Panem. Mostly because most of the tributes we've seen have been disabled, either temporarily or not.
Edit: Also, since it's such a powerhouse in the 2nd rebellion and the home of Panem's new president, i just think that's a way of showing that you cannot have a revolution to bring about positive and lasting change without disabled people involved. You can't have a revolution if you're excluding one of the most forgotten demographics of people who are a after thought to both the oppressors and the oppressed. Honestly it's hard what i'm trying to get across and i've typed multiple paragraphs and deleted them but in short: *DO NOT FORGET ABOUT US DISABLED PEOPLE.*
You could also say this is because they have to use heavy machinery from a young age which would lead to a lot of accidents
And fumes
would that be the same for 10? Since there was a crippled boy from 10 in the 74th games
YESS
I love this district so much. It was one of, if not, the most important district for the 2nd rebellion. They literally started the uprising, was the first district to be free from Capitol rule, and their leader became the President of the whole country afterwards. Disadvantaged in the arena, but a true powerhouse outside of the games.
While there's an inherant horror in the 3rd quarter quell having a tribute who is the mother of multiple children, I think its also pretty hard not to point out that her children were forced to watch the game their mother was forced into. In the first book Katniss explicitly states viewing is mandatory for the entire district, and every available screen plays it, espeically in public spaces. They couldn't have avoided seeing that even if they tried.
ahh the fact that greenery is so scarce in 8 is so sad considering it stretches over TN, which is such a hub of biodiversity now 😭
Their is a theory that district 8 tributes and victors were able use sign language or create make shift armor in order to survive and win in the arena.
Since District 8 probably has the highest disabled population a lot probably know sign language
Would be useful in loud sweatshops
As soon as I saw Bobbin I IMMEDIATELY knew what was up bc I read a lot of Industrial Revolution as someone with Irish ancestry lol. But ‘bobbin girls’ were very common, and I wonder if Bobbin is actually his name or was a nickname that stuck after losing his arm. Because if it’s a nickname it’s on the same level of nicknaming “scar” from the lion king that because of his face. I really do think bobbin lost his arm being a “bobbin boy” though, most likely losing it while, we’ll, changing out a bobbin in the textile machines
I don't think it's a nickname it's what he was called by during his reaping and Suzanne names the district citizens by hints to their industry, interestingly I heard that in the book bobbin isn't actually hinted to be disabled neither is wovey hinted to having down syndrome, so casting disabled actors was fully the directors choice (a good choice in my opinion disabled actors deserve to get recognition and it also showed just how cruel the games and the capitol are and it adds all the more reasons for district to revolt)
But yeah he definitely must have lost it due to an accident in the factories
I'm so glad this video was made. I totally overlooked how important 8 was. I almost had a heart attack when I saw that in the prequel the girl had Down Syndrome. I hadn't thought the games could be more cruel than already shown then that image was shattered. I couldn't beleive there could be a district worse off than 12 but there you go. I also hadn't caught that the woman who would become president at Coin's death was from 8. I just liked how sensible and kind she seemed and was glad SOMEBODY over the age of 21 wasn't a raging psycho(Snow and Coin), addict (a lot of the former tributes), or a buffoon (clowns from the capital). First time I watched Mocking J 2 I remember the feeling of RELIEF when they said she'd be president. I have a deep appreciation of 8 now where people stepped up and were heroes when they had basically nothing to fight with.
По книге у девочки не было синдрома Дауна, это уже авторы фильма напридумывали

don't forget about a certain hospital helper
District 9's video is about to be 2 minutes long.
I hope that means it comes soon
I know they really gave that district no love at all.
9 & 10 in one whole video would still be like 4 minutes long MAX
I wish we got to know more about the social climate in 8. i'd be so interested in how they care for and acommodate each other, especially because of the high number of disabled people and the amount of varied disabilities they face.
losing limbs to the unsafe machinerie is one thing, but i wonder about the people that would suffer hearing loss due to missing noise protection.
the factory fumes causing breathing issues and cancer and other long term health issues. i don't think that pregnant people would be allowed to stop working, so i keep thinking about mental and physical disabilities that people in 8 are already born with...
there is so much to think about.
this big of a group of people with so different support needs would have a cultural way to exist and help one another that is very different to ours i think.
I jokingly think District 8 rebelled first because of the horrible outfits their tributes had to wear in the tribute parade.
Really enjoying this series! District 8 has always been fascinating - especially with how relevant it is in the books. Love the interpretation that they are so weak in the games but so vital for the rebellion because they are able to congregate and plan in the factories.
As someone who works in textiles, district 8 holds a special place in my heart, so thank you for making this video
Perfect timing, I have just started writing a spin off about a tribute from 8. But the research made me go into a rabbit hole hahaha
are we ever told what life was like BEFORE the first rebellion
Yes and no. It is speculated that ww2 didnt ent the way we know, but ended in throwing atom bombs on each other. The natural desasters that happened bc of that shaped the panem we know. Bc there was no fear of other nations now, as they are all presumed gone, panem rises to what it is now. There are a few hints to the roman empire (no, not the tiktok thing) and how the poor are POOR and the rich are rich rich. There was a pretty awesome analysis here on youtube, try looking it up :3
It was bad :{
I love this series so much!

She wasn’t but it would be cool if she was
So like, how do we even know the number of citizens in each district? Genuine question 0.0
They are all logged by the government. And cause Suzanne said so
Lucky also went to the museum thing a while ago that went into a ton of lore, but I imagine you can look it up
@@lexgrey8103 Damn the lore goes deep ._. Thanks!

The speed I clicked on this videos notification was crazy
Hey guys did the book ever said that the district 8 girl had down syndrome? or is that just a casting choice? I don't recall but like idk. I also read somewhere that at the start of the games the ppl reaped were voted rather than randomly selected, which is why I am curious if both of this two things are true.
I have read on the wiki that in the book wovey isn't mentioned as being disabled although there is a vague hint to it as her mentor hilarius says that he couldn't get her to perform and it isn't mentioned if she's doing that out of stubbornness or to rebel against the capitol like reaper does it seems like she doesn't understand what going on around her also he says that she has " no personality" which could look like a aiblest insult that people with mental disabilities get called that way so I guess the directors took these hints and decided to cast Sofia who has down syndrome, bobbin also isn't mentioned as being disabled in the book but the actor playing him is an amputee
Also the voting for the tributes thing happened only in the first curter quell
