You are amazing and time is ticking by. I have total faith in you. Two years ago when I was just about to leave on my boat I had many projects outstanding. Radar still in the box amongst many others. None of it mattered. We still sailed from Vancouver Canada to an Alaskan glacier then south to the Mexican Sea of Cortez by Christmas. The most important thing is that the two of you leave to fulfill your dream!
You should consider reversing the way your exhaust system is made. Your injecting water at the top of the elbow - inherently you are going to have water pooling right in that section as the engine shuts down. Hot salt water = no good over long term. If you rotated the exhaust to come out and up(dry run section) where it essentially creates a "hump", you then have a downward angled section that runs down into your wet exhaust hose - on this downward angled section, you inject your water. If you have tools for it, you would have a larger tube that is outside of your dry exhaust section, where you inject the water(IE 1" dry surrounded by a 2" tube which houses the water). Creates a bit more work to build, but is far superior and would significantly increase the life of that exhaust. I would be happy to share what i'm talking about. I've designed these types of systems for quite a few gen sets and engines.
I'll certainly second (actually there were plenty of others who beat me to it, so technically I'm not able to second it... but you get the idea) the comments that the Genset is "pretty danged spiffy". I also liked that you were paying back the cement folks for all the assistance they've been giving you. "What goes around, comes around". Keep plugging away, Mads. Ava's going to be at your side helping move things forward before you know it. And that alone should make your really, really happy.

Same shipping issues in UK and the US. Lot's of stuff is backordered or, your order is just "being cancelled" so you have to order at a higher price due to inflation. I share your frustration. But we have to pay for C-19 somehow and this is just the start of things to come. Anyhoo - love to see what progress you can make. I know Ava arrives soon, BUT, remember hard deadlines are the enemy of sailing, if you are late - that's just the way it is. With boating, all plans are written in the sand at low tide - they say. Great to see the payback effort by helping with the "Oh glorious sanding" of your friends boat. The gen set seems a bit large, but should certainly to the job, nice adaptation of the inline drive,(no pulleys less trouble), keep moving forward, it's looking great.
Actually the genset is a little small the perkins engine was a freebie but it was thought to be a different model. It turned out to be a smaller and crucially less powerful one. I am trying to remember the figures so I may be wrong but it is projected to develop 3.5 Kv not 5 Kv. This should not be much of a problem as he now has a 5 Kv invertor and Lithium batteries. The batteries have a high C rating hence will soak up the full charge of the itty bitty generator and the inverter can push out enough power to run almost everything even without the generator on. The only downside is the generator will have to be used more often and for a little longer.
@@glennedwards1449 Yep, I think the alternator portion is rated for the larger perkins. So, if he ever gets his hands on a 402...he can swap out and get 7kw out of it.
Don't worry about burning a few liters of diesel. Compared to the rest of the watery world, sailboats are incredibly environmentally friendly. If you get any flack about your genset, you might ask how the amps that are powering your critic's laptop are being generated! Most of the time, those amps came from burning coal or diesel.
There is also the consideration that sailing at high latitides doesnt allow for much solar at all and in winter its not even daylight long enough even if it were sunny!🙄
Hey Mads, maybe you should make a metal tray (galvanized?) that has a 2cm lip, to place under the generator. This would catch any drips or leaks from the engine. Keep oils or fluids from streaking onto the floor. Just a thought.

So I have been watching your projects since you started with Obliex. I am in the marine industry and a large portion of my work is power production for cruising boats. After I design the solar and wind generator systems I always ask what size generator are we going with. I usually get the same response of why would I do that. Your explanation is 50% of it along with its not always gonna be sunny and the wind isn't always gonna blow. Don't listen to the haters you're doing great.

Automotive tech here (in scotland) .. your struggle is real, I have a 2 bay workshop, and a car stuck on a lift on each bay waiting on backordered parts that pre-covid I could have got next day. Its becoming the norm to have to battle to secure bits from obscure places just to get what I need. getting used parts or having parts reconditioned , often at greater cost than new parts simply cause the new parts are unobtanium.

You are definitely not alone on having items canceled on you, I live in the US and have had 3 items canceled on me lately for a project I am currently working on, it's very frustrating. I like how you explained how your items of convenience are just that, they are available when you can use them. That's prudent planning at it's best!

Hi Mads/Ava, playing catchup and just wanted to mention. The ball tool ting for the epoxy, not sure of the price but ....there may be 2 options to consider, first is a ball tool for shaping icing, normally plastic and come in a range of sizes, second is a craft tool aptly named a ball tool, normally metal a little like a ballbearing on a stick available in a wide range of sizes and can be found on amazon, ebay and craft stores. Just a thought because I am sure the made in china ones on ebay are good enough.
Altough you have a "cool zen way", I can feel your frustration, my friend😂 . Had the same problem with a bunch of UK sent parts. Yelling and cursing helps.😊 Stay cool.

Great job on gen set, may the oil drain plug be easy to reach, it seems you have plenty of space, but it never hurts to double check, as a prior owner of a boat with a very narrow and hard to reach oil drain plug.

When fairing corners, instead of using a wooden spoon which does not have any flex, use a credit card. The plastic can be easily cut to the profile you require and it's small enough for tight spaces. Just don't use a current one :-)
Hot tip: I do that with bondo spreaders which are slicker and flex better! You can also repair damaged detailed wood house trim by cutting to fit the profile and replace (usually dog chewed) wood withfiller and it.👍
It's all good Mad's those of us that have been following from the beginning know you justification for interior and power systems. Wind doesn't always blow and there is no sun at night. I can say that all of us right now can sympathize with you supply and shipping woes right now.
Mads: It's hard to manage 2 boats, Athena and Obelix. Also Mads, now that I have sold Obelix, let's go and see if there is a second boat I can work on at the same time XD. Great work anyway!
As I said before, if you ever stop with DIY fun, you can definitely start a career in stand up. For a guy that is primarily a worker, you can be pretty spiffy funny, if I say so myself.
Love the genset. If you take a look of ready to go 48V DC gensets, they’re ridiculously expensive. I think I’m gonna have to make my one in few years as well. Not to power (only) the luxurious stuff but the whole boat one cold climates. Seems that it’s not that difficult :)
Mads, all of the comfort items you’re adding will extend your time away from the dock. I’ve been cruising for awhile. Having fresh laundry in a remote Anchorage is a necessity.

Great job on gen set, may the oil drain plug be easy to reach, it seems you have plenty of space, but it never hurts to double check, as a prior owner of a boat with a very narrow and hard to reach oil drain plug.

When fairing corners, instead of using a wooden spoon which does not have any flex, use a credit card. The plastic can be easily cut to the profile you require and it's small enough for tight spaces. Just don't use a current one :-)
Hot tip: I do that with bondo spreaders which are slicker and flex better! You can also repair damaged detailed wood house trim by cutting to fit the profile and replace (usually dog chewed) wood withfiller and it.👍
It's all good Mad's those of us that have been following from the beginning know you justification for interior and power systems. Wind doesn't always blow and there is no sun at night. I can say that all of us right now can sympathize with you supply and shipping woes right now.

As I said before, if you ever stop with DIY fun, you can definitely start a career in stand up. For a guy that is primarily a worker, you can be pretty spiffy funny, if I say so myself.

Love the genset. If you take a look of ready to go 48V DC gensets, they’re ridiculously expensive. I think I’m gonna have to make my one in few years as well. Not to power (only) the luxurious stuff but the whole boat one cold climates.

Mads, all of the comfort items you’re adding will extend your time away from the dock. I’ve been cruising for awhile. Having fresh laundry in a remote Anchorage is a necessity.
