    As for the new sails, measuring the old ones may not be good enough if you don't know for sure about their performance. Selden masts do have a unique production number cut into their foot. Just send it to Selden and you will get any info you need.

    I quite like Ava a lot, she just complements you perfectly with her constant giggling and laughter. You're a tad bit reserved and not really a guy who seems like the type to let loose and just send it much. Just saying she's wonderful, and hope you two are getting on well so far.

    I am looking at also turning one of my tanks into a "day tank" and keeping the other two as "storage tanks", it's great to know that you have clean fuel. I would like to point out however as others probably have, that you have one major thing backwards. The "day tank" i.e. the one your engine runs off of should be the one that can only be filled from another tank. You should never be able to fill the day tank directly from deck in other words. The fuel is always transferred from your "storage tanks" to your "day tank" which is often roughly about 24 hrs worth of fuel capacity and you know that this fuel has been through your polisher to get there. Obviously, Mads has some space and location constraints, but it should be stressed that his is not the normal setup.

  • @pc3250
    @pc3250 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love your channel, the best yacht diy on TH-cam.
    I think you should check your tank filler cap is sealed or better still move it to a protected location. I am very surprised by the amount of water you have in the diesel fuel, you should not have that amount in such a short time. Yes, diesel does often come supplied with a small amount of water, but not that amount. I suspect you may have another problem. When I saw you install the diesel filler cap on the cockpit sole I thought that is a potential problem. I had water contamination problems over a number of years and was cleaning out the tank every year. I discovered it was the tank filler cap not sealing and rain water getting in, problem solved. Also, although it's good practice to fill tanks to reduce condensation, modern diesel contains bio and this can make the fuel go bad after a few months. Having too much fuel stored could be a problem. The fuel dipper used by Cadoha looks a good option for reducing water and better than a straight filter system. The fuel will be polished by your normal filter and recirculation of diesel from the engine. It's mostly the water contamination that starts the problem.
    Also, if you have two tanks, it's good practice to keep them separate, in case one gets contaminated, then you have an alternative.
    Great channel and Merry Christmas to you both.

    I just wanted to say that I watched ALL of your videos and finally I am caught up to present day. You have done a wonderful job my friend and with each skill you added so much more and continue to show me that anything can be done given the time and the perserverance to stay with it. I'm sure many would have sacrified or not even attempted all the things you did on your own just to simply get in the water, most I think would never had tried making what you did so much more worthy. I personally like all the gadgets and electrical stuff annd from your track lighting maybe add a Defuser for the lights to make them a little softer. From all that you have done I am surprized you never got a sponsor from any electrical tool companies as you showed them off so well.
    Lastly on this day i wish both of you a Merry Christmas and wish you nothing but fun and smooth sailing in the next year, also I have a feeling you two are going to tie the knot sooner than expected and all the better in my opinion as you two make a great couple. You found your girl finally so treat eachother like you would like to be treated and that is in the best possible way.

    I'm thinking for boats leaving shore that a fuel polisher is a necessity. Or for those who are not in for some relaxing times of trying to figure out what happened to their diesel engine five miles off shore. and of course having that nice polishing of fuel when taking on new fuel and never having to pour from a fiver again. Look for dolphins or something with your spare time. A vacuum gage on the polisher is always handy when checking the filter too.

    Mads, the fuel filler being on the cockpit sole will leak, water will make it's way through seals and into the tank, water will find it's way in, the filler should be on a more vertical surface.

    I made a DIY diesel polisher, with a timer, it runs everyday or around 30min. picking up from the very bottom of the tank, and returnin on the opposite side, at top.
    Zero fuel problems after that. Tank is clean!!
    (no more concerne of leaving it full all the time, all the water ends up in the Racor and it is easy to spot and drain).

  • @carlthor91
    @carlthor91 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Mads, I have used Racors for years. Depending on your space, you might wish to go with a series twin setup for polishing, 30 micron (red end cap) primary polishing filter. then10 micron (blue end caps) for the secondary polishing filter. Then the final 2 micron (brown end caps) for the engine/genset feeds, from the day tank. You will need to talk to the supplier to get restriction gauges for each filter, and installation hints, makes life easier. Stock filters by the case lot. Way way cheaper than injectors and safer as well.
    Best wishes from the far North.

    I have a furling mast. One of the most critical things you can do to prevent a jammed mainsail in the mast, is to have a sail that isn't stretched out. Great idea for a new main. I would not consider Dacron for the fabric. After a lot of research I went with hydranet. Dacron stretches too much and it's useful life will be far less than a quality laminate or a woven product like hydranet. Hydranet is a bullet proof material that will take tremendous amounts of abuse. It is more expensive but in the long run, will be cheaper.

    Deck fills offer another line of defence in preventing water in the fuel tanks. We have changed the O-rings on our diesel deck fill caps once a year after boater friends experienced water infiltration due to cracked and deteriorated O-rings.

  • @aserta
    @aserta 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Considering the whole system is overhauled, you clearly picked the water from some dodgy fuel supply, but there's also the possibility of air condensation inside, which is why you want to fill the tank up, the emptier it is, the bigger the chances of condensation. In some applications they line the walls with a special type of fuel resistant foam that doesn't condensate. You could also make a fiberglass matting (fire resistant) blanket, that should also work, plus it's simpler since it's on the outside.

    • @hoperules8874
      @hoperules8874 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    i have found that if you keep your main fuel tank is full as possible you will cut down on condensation. The diesel return heats up the tank and as the fuel goes down it draws in humid air and as that fuel cools the humid air creates condensate and water forms on the walls of the tank. keep up the great videos.

    Gulf Coast makes a diesel fuel filter that uses Roll of paper towels. I had one on a trawler which was used in a fuel polishing system and it worked flawlessly. It sounds strange but they’ve been around a long time and are popular on commercial boats.

    • @philchernin6072
      @philchernin6072 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I added a Gulf Coast filter to the polishing system on our DeFever trawler about 8 years ago. Previously I would check the Racor filters everyday and at least once a week would have some crud or water to remove. With the Gulf Coast I don’t need to check the Racors ever! Here’s my protocol, when we get new fuel, I run the polisher so the fuel is polished 3 times thru the filter. During the season, I polish the tank I’m using about once a week. I only transfer polished fuel as I try not to contaminate any other tank.
      Gulf Coast was developed for large construction and commercial vehicles. Our annual fuel volume of 3,000 gallons is small by their standards, so I change my filter element once a year. Oh, their tech support is excellent, call them and they’ll design a system for you.
      Good luck

    We ordered our sails from Precision Sails as well. Couldn’t be happier with the process and product.

    Have you guys visited The Fighting Cocks on Clayhall RD yet for some fish and chips? Who call’s fries, chips anyway… It’s west of Haslar marina. Clayhall Rd starts at the end of Haslar Rd. It’s a cozy place. Cheers from Belgium
