@Roman Stetson I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm trying it out now. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Very nice to show the protections and talk about them!! A lot of people think that a regular boot and a adv jacket will handle the trail with the big ones
A bit too much smoothing though. Hypersmooth 2.0 looks almost too smooth, lol. it's hard to tell whats happening below you since the bike isn't always in frame.
I come from mountain biking and on those everything is magnified, especially in suspension set up, rebound causes the bike to buck if its too fast but if its too slow it can do the same by causing the suspension to pack up and it doesn't return in time for the next bump so within the first hit your through the travel but then you stay in the travel and by the 3rd or 4th bump your basically bottomed out and riding with no suspension at all causing the bucking problem to happen again, I suggest to dial in the suspension so it tracks the ground and isn't too slow or too fast, just the middle ground for the damping and pre load setting you have set currently, then only moving away from that setting by 1-2 clicks in either direction, your looking for small bump tracing not big hit control cause the suspension you have doesn't have high and low speed settings, find goldylocks and just stick with it, hope that helps
I appreciate the earnest real world nature of this video. Great to know I’m not the only one to go down. Thanks also for the comment on soil type...I live in muddy area and experience more risk on side of puddles. I’m also glad to see you sometimes get off the bike to turn around. Makes me realize I may need to slow down a bit and not push so hard.
While watching Bret ride his awesome 790 on single track I was thinking "this guy is like a Jedi on a motorcycle" then a Star Wars Mandalorian commercial popped up.
A pretty technical trail, even so, another example of Bret's ability to read the trail ahead, and use the throttle inputs as to not overdrive the 50/50 tires.
Great video with some beautiful scenery, I think the tip about dirt bike gear is spot on. Largest issue I have had muscling an adventure bike down the trail is fatigue. This is an even bigger issue when you are moving at the speeds shown here (and having too much fun). Fatigue equals mistakes and mistakes equal falls. Would love to see a video dedicated to energy saving tips. Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work, so I have something to do on my breaks :)
@@BretTkacs really enjoying that 60fps video for offroad fast trail. can ear you talk easy when you have your helmet on. those good old tips after crash(they were not real crash anyway. just a bit more suspense for the day). and i wish i could ride like that 2 buts its been 2 year since my accident and my knee never completely recover. so now i try to go more easy on me. i've been following you since mototrek. you are literally the best content creator and i think you are on the right way for the video quality. keep it going you are my favourite
Coming here with your "weightless over the bike" video freshly imprinted on my memory, I'm amazed at how stable the video is. I realize the gopros image stabilization is pretty on point but the weightless techniques you taught in that video are really exemplified here in this one.
Hello Bret I have just fitted Karoo 3 front tire on my S10, thought I have bought the wrong tire but after watching this video it has giving me piece of mind THANKS for the great video
Amazing riding Bret in that trail!...you even fall like a champ!...😅. Having the right gear for the occasion is crucial. When you have the opportunity to ride the new KTM 890 Adv...looking forward to have your impressions
I love your videos and riding, Bret. We have snow here in Austria and I ride my 790 R only in the city these months. Here at the mountain cabin I have a new toy: Sur Ron electric dirtbike. SO MUCH FUN! And I am already crazy modding it...
Good trails and great riding 😄 Can you add anything on your braking - coming from a turn into the next short one, looks like more than using engine braking, so front, back % etc? Again great vids - thanks!
@@BretTkacs that would be great and the value of your on-bike commentary as you do it is not to be underestimated - we can really understand the where and how, though even then I doubt I'll be throwing the Guzzi V85TT around like that ;) thanks again
Great footage , We're skiing right now , in my part of the world. I think your comment on the weight of the bikes is right on . The old dirt bike idiom , in case of doubt gas it, will get you in trouble really quickly, especially if the bike is the least bit leaned over.
first: again a nice video . I personal love riding 650 to 800 in the trails, specially on longer distances. The weight is pretty good for traction, but ,because i am a lazy guy, i am sitting on my comfortable seat nearly the whole time. Even when it is getting tricky...my ass is resting on the seat. I love it. (yeah, i know that it is much better in standing position....sure....done it for many years on lightweightoffroaders) ....keep riding and stay healthy !
I wear all that same gear (knee braces, neck brace, full upper pad set, motocross boots, etc every time I ride... even in the street. Is that unnecessary? I certainly keeps me from taking short spontaneous rides on the R1200gs.
You said in several vids that you dont decrease your tire pressure offroad because of possible rim damaging. What is different now? Lighter bike than the ATs and GSsis? Sorry, just read it. Thanks!
Almost same apparel. Mosko basilisk, leatt body armour, moveo neck brace, gaerne sg10 boots...But T7 full suspension upgraded 😝Amazing ride area. Great videos always.
At 7:36, how did you get through this section while standing and not getting your body thrown all over? I tried to keep my hand loose, elbow up and bent and relax, but still find it very difficult to be on the pegs; especially, when I touch the throttle.😭
You make it look so easy on that 790. I find mine is much easier off road compared to my 800GS but still able to make it looks like a 250 the way you do.
The 790 rocks the trails better than any other large ADV bike I have ridden. Little known fact... The F800GS weighs less than thr 790 Adventure. Another little known fact. I raced my F800GS in several desert races using a prototype Rekluse clutch. Great bike!!!
I have played witb Rally mode alot and find I either stay in Offroad or rally 1 (because you can't leave TCM off without doing a whole routine everytime you restart the 790)

Man, I know that trail like the back of my hand. I do prefer it on my 300cc 2T trail bike though. Hah. Thanks for all the great riding skills videos you've done, Bret.
Excellent riding on that 790! and all the while telling us what our doing, good stuff! Is it yours? I did a test ride on one last year, loved it when riding solo. Made the hooligan come out again, blasting from turn to turn. But on the second ride with my girl on the back it was out of it's place. To light and small for 2 people. For me it had to replace my V-strom 1000 so a bigger bike was wanted. After some searching I bought my self a Guzzi V85TT. More road based but still capable enough for stuff like this.
Yeh puddles in tahuya especially have big roots that hide inside the water and due to this fact everytime I go through I am ready to pull the clutch to disengage lower and I keep my knees out and bent ..looks funny but it allows it to absorb off axis tourque and harsh bumps...
Biggest problem I run into after learning how to let the bike deflect off of objects and controlling it rather that overreacting and trying to stop it is being able to put tourque to the ground Wich is directly related to the type of tires
A wonderful video with great tips and viewer perspective. I mus ask though , were you going that fast to keep it interesting or was it to keep moving? In other words was it necessary to maintain that speed to not get stuck? I ask because the terrain looks lovely and , personally, I would have liked to go slower to soak it in but not if it would cause a crash. I only chose that pace because it was stable and one I enjoyed. I was not trying to ride fast and can always stop in the distance I can see. Slower would have been fine too.
Bret- you are the best at what you do, both production quality and instructional content. My Big Gripe with so many videos out there is simply this: Aside from the fact you need a camera following you, why do you not show More footage of you riding in the terrain you are shooting? Brett. Just a quick question. Having an old F650GS that I take off road as much as I can. I find if I fall, it really effects my confidence if the rest of the circuit is the same as when I crashed/landed softly cos of my huge ass :-) is there any tips to overcoming this lack of confidence as it spoils my enjoyment worrying about when it might happen again ?.
If you can ride like that on that, I should be able to do that on my cb500x for sure. Need some safe trail I know won't lead to a dead end to roam on and get practicing
I am looking hard at the KTM 790 or 890 Adventure R. My last two adventure bikes have been the BMW R1200 and R1250 GSAs. I primarily use the R1250 for backcountry off road riding/touring/camping. More and more I find I am doing trips solo and thus looking at the KTM 790 or 890 adventure as a more off road capable and light weight option to the GSA. Considering your extensive experience with BMW and KTM, I have a couple of questions: 1. How much easier is it to pick up the KTM vs. the GS/GSA considering the KTM weight advantage but the BMW doesn't fully tip over due to the boxer engine? 2. Is the KTM 790/890 going to give an intermediate rider on BDR tracks (all levels of the BDR tracks - not just gravel forest service roads) more confidence due to its more off road focused specs such as the 21 inch front wheel etc.?
The KTM is easier to pick up but not much easier than a standard GS. The GS is insanely well balanced. The GSA is a beast so it is noticeably easier. As for confidence the KTM is much better offroad. I am using my 790 in place of my WR450F. With all of that said the 790 is lightest in class but still 15lbs heavier than the older F800GS. The 790 is hard to fault in performance. Coming from BMW you will find KTM focused on performance first, BMW wants a refined feel and fit/finish If you get a trouble free 790 you may just fall in love.
Ok so if I had any questions of whether you could ride like you teach, which I didn't, well that has all been answered now.
I didn't know if anyone would be interested in a helmet cam video but at least I had a nice relaxing day.
