I have a lightly used '65' Super Reverb RI arriving tomorrow, Sept. 3rd, 2024, that I found on the Reverb! site. I had a real-deal 60's BF one back many years ago. Why I sold it I don't remember. At 72 I gotta do these things and get as much enjoyment from them as my years left are in small numbers. I also recently picked up a clean hand-wired Deluxe Reverb. IMHO it's far superior to the '65 DR being auditioned here. YEEHAW!! :)

I'm a 22 year old that's been a fan of the show for a couple of years now. One night my mom's friend who's been a professional guitar player all his life, touring all over Canada and Europe, came for diner and played through my rig. He wrote to me the next day saying "Man, can I come back to your place with my touring gear? I have to make my rig sound like yours".
If that isn't the single greatest compliment a man can get, I don't know what is. Thanks Dan and Mick!
(btw I'm running a PRS Mira flame top through a Hudson Sidecar or Broadcast -> Kingsley Constable -> Ecochord tape delay -> Catalinbread Talisman -> Strymon Deco into a Marshall JTM and a vintage Plexi-like Traynor in stereo)

      I’ve been playing 18 months
      Justin Sandecoe teaches me technique
My guitar teacher covers theory / turning technique into music
TPS teaches tone / amp, making music inspirational
I reckon all three are just as important as one another! I remember my guitar teacher interrupting me recently to say “that’s one of the best strat tones I’ve ever heard”... AVRI ‘62->Sunface bc-183->Golden Boy->Page->Ardx20->V40D... I said that’s Mick and Dan!

I don't want to just watch demos of gear if I'm not particularly likely to buy, but am still interested in. Discussion helps you get more of an idea of the "in the room" stuff that youtube can never properly translate.

Towards the end you guys describe why the deluxe is such a killer “pedal
platform,” it lets each of those common (or garden) overdrive types speak with their own unique midrange character. Few amps do that as well to my ears.
Also, wow the humbuckers, with their extra midrange into scoopy amps like these sounds magical!

    • @bakkels
      @bakkels ปีที่แล้ว

Haha isn't it great we all have different tastes? Before I started this clip, I was sure I was gonna prefer the Super for cleans, and the Deluxe for pedals. Turns out I thought the Super handled those pedals _way_ better than the Deluxe. The clean tones were 50/50 to me. That really depended on the guitars they played and the settings they used.
For my tastes and what I play, the Super (slightly) came out ahead.
Sadly, both are way too loud for me to be of any practical use anyway. I need a bigger house. And less neighbours.

    - SRV
    - Michael Landau
    - Ronnie Earl (with a lot of Reverb and always on Tremolo)
    - Robben Ford (some times)
    - Dave Specter (with Archtops overdriven with some Reverb and always on Tremolo, I think)
    - Carl Whethersby (with ES-335)
    - Matt Schofield (before 2012 when he switched to 100 Watt Two Rocks)
    - Volker Striftler (With Tele)
    - Nick Shebelen (WIth ES-335 and Strat)

There was not one instance in this video in which I didn’t prefer the Super. Every riff and phrase had more depth and richness - if you can play at those volumes. I know Dan & Mick we’re keeping things as “real world” as possible, but even with that, they’re cranking the amps far louder than I’m able to. I have an Oldfield Honky Tonk D’Lux, basically a ‘59 tweed Deluxe with 6L6s and a Vibrolux output transformer, which makes it a 35w Deluxe. The only time I’ve ever turned it past 2 I got compliments from the neighbors on how Sultans of Swing was coming along 🙄. So, hell yeah, if you can push the amp a bit, the Super sounds amazing. For the rest of us, the Deluxe, or even a Princeton, is about what we can get away with and keep up good relations with family and friends.

    • @bakkels
      @bakkels 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I completely agree on your general point. And I also liked the Super more (I already knew that though, the clean tone of a Super is to die for). However, when he pulled out the es-335 at about 26:00 I preferred the Deluxe's natural overdrive way more. The Super almost turned into fuzz-territory to my ears. Which can also be cool and useful ofcourse, but to me the Deluxe won out in that particular section. Anyway, I'm more of a single coil man so to me and how I play the Super would win it hands down.
Which brings me to your point. Who the hell gets to play a Super anyway without getting intimately acquinted with your local police officer?

I own a Bassman 59 reissue and Princeton 65 Reverb reissue. Both great amps. The Princeton does much of what the Deluxe does at a slightly more friendly volume level, but if you play with a loud drummer it will struggle to give you a true clean tone. It does the thing where the mid range increases as you drive it like the Deluxe too. The Bassman gives you all the clean headroom you ever need, but gets Saggy and like a Marshall if you really turn it up, but at this point the sheer wall of volume produced by the 4x10 is just such a physically overwhelming experience and never usable at home or indeed at any gig I have ever played. The Fender reissue amps are great though and do sound like the originals. You should definitely try a Princeton though, it’s just about crankable at home if you live in a detached house! I think a lot of people make the mistake that when they turn a Fender, or any non master volume amp, up to drive it is that they don’t change the tone controls settings to allow for the mids and bass increasing which makes them sound flabby.

Having had a couple of Supers back in my days, and I have a '65 Deluxe RI now, I'll add just one thing: being at one time a fairly accomplished chord melody practitioner, I noticed that the Super made it difficult to hear the interior voices of chords. Years after forming this opinion, I was surprised to find an interview where Joe Pass said the same thing. Otherwise, a fine amp. Re: the Deluxe: I think it may be the world's most versatile amp. The one I own I bought primarily because the Strat neck/middle sound is an important one for me. I call it the "hollow/sparkle" sound, not "quack" tone. "Quack" I can see for playing funk rhythm, but otherwise, I play even jazz standard chord melodies with it. I think of it as guitar's answer to the Harmon mute: think late night, rainy streets, Miles Davis. Very untraditional, I admit, but it doesn't sound anything like "quacking" to me. And the Deluxe did that sound in spades. Why shouldn't it have? Fender invented it, albeit unknowingly. Actually, I had a Vox AC something for a while, and it did that sound even better than the Deluxe. But don't tell Leo.

Pushed the front end in with an EHX LPB-1 Power Booster, which provided the OD I needed with my ‘64 Strat. Used to rehearse with our 70’s band with the Super volume at 8.5! Loved the projection of the 4x10’s!

65' Super Reverb RI is my one and only amp right now. It has its strengths and weakness.
Pros: The tone is amazing. Punchy dynamic, 3-D cleans, excellent pedal platform, lush smooth reverb without too much metallic "karrang", ample headroom. Breaks up after "3" but I always keep it clean for a pedal platform. Ideal cleans.
Con: it's a bit cumbersome to move around.
I use a folding hand dolly to transport it, which helps.
Weighs less than an AC-30 and many other popular 2x12 combo amps.

I love both. All of Leo's models were carefully thought over in order to be suited better for different size stages/venues. I think the main thing you are hearing are the 10s of the Super Reverb changing the character and that's why so many people revere that amp. I think a better comparison would be a Vibrolux and Super Reverb. Both of them are around the same wattage and they utilize 10s for their speaker configuration. BUT, there is no arguing that the sound of Nashville is a Blackface Fender Sound

  • @PaxtonTrench

It’s crazy how there is so much variety in opinion over these two amps just in these comments.
I was playing in my basement today- a strat through my DRRI, which is one of those FSR models with the Cannabis Rex speaker. I originally bought the DRRI as my Princeton Reissue didn’t have enough clean headroom for the sound I wanted. Here I am again, feeling the same way about my DRRI as I did about my Princeton- in need of more headroom and a “bigger” sound.
To my ear, the Super Reverb in this video sounds better to me. Bigger, fully, warmer. I like a clean, slightly overdriven sound. However, the DRRI sounded great in its own way as well.
Thank you Dan and Mick for showing me that there is room for both of these beautiful amps in anyone’s arsenal. To think, just last week I was considering purchasing a boutique amp head and cab thinking it would end my tone quest. You guys literally hit every tone I’d ever want in this video. Now to find a Super Reverb!!

I grew up in the 60's. It was all Fender (And some Vox), until it was all Marshall as the 60's were ending. When I could afford it, and had to put my money where my mouth is, I acquired a Fender Super Sonic 100 watt head and 4x12 cab. And a Fender 100 watt Twin Amp (Looks like a Twin Reverb). I like Vox, Marshall, Mesa, and many other great amps - but I'm addicted to Fender sounds. For this test, I'll take the Super. If I could justify another amp, I would order a Super Reverb right now.

You just can’t beat a Fender amp. Period. A simple tweak of a knob and there is that tone. The Deluxe Reverb’s bright cap is set sort of in between the Twin and Super Reverbs bright switch option as well as the preset mid control of the deluxe. The Deluxe tone is more of the Vanilla only flavour versus the more tweakable abilities of the Super and Twin. Yet the Deluxe Reverb preset EQ is quite pleasing which along with its ample power range is why it remains such a popular amp.
I truly love what Fender has also done with the Tone Master version of the Deluxe and Twin amp and I really hope they do a Super Reverb and Bassman version. I know a lot of people will go poo poo to the Tone Master versions but I for one have owned the tube versions and I am quite content and impressed with the Tone Master amps. I would love to also own the tube versions but ..... I’m loving the light weight and tone of what Fender is now producing.
Nevertheless the tube Blackface originals are fantastic.

Having owned a Twin and Deluxe modern reissue, and now a Vintage Fender Champ and Victoria Tweed champ, smaller amps are the way to go. The magic spot for these amps is when you get them up towards edge of breakup and then push them with a boost/drive. Doing that will get you louder than you want for any house, and I'm in a band and I was too loud to practice with my bandmates on both my Twin and Deluxe at anything over a 4. So ya, I now have two champs in wet/dry and it's sonic heaven.

Man that section at the beginning when mick is playing a chord constantly and switching back and forth between the deluxe reverb and super instantly while playing the same chord really really demonstrates how a super has a lot more mids and different tone because of it. I have vintage versions of both (67 deluxe reverb and 65 super) and love them both to the moon but the super having the mids knob is a pretty big deal. That being said I play my DR a lot more just because of volume in the room I play. A blackface vibroverb is very similar to a super reverb in that way and the black face deluxe and Princeton are similar to the DR. You can get vintage super reverbs at pretty good deals still too. Thank god vintage amp prices “for the most part” haven’t followed the extremes of vintage guitars. Just fantastic amps.
