  • Join me as I check out the 3 new Seattle Light Rail train stations: U-District (near the University of Washington), Roosevelt, and Northgate. The latter station is home not only to Northgate Mall (the first mall in America), but also the brand new hockey training facility for the Seattle Kraken, our city's first NHL hockey team. Let's take a walk through them and discuss whether it was worth the money.

    It would be such an asset to so many cities. Portland's light rail which I think is all on ground level is pretty extensive; however, they began the project forty years ago. Cost is so prohibitive to do what they need to and many cities aren't even as far along as Seattle's system. Love the NHL team team. I suppose they will use the term from Greek mythology -" Release the Kraken". Always enjoy your videos.

    Nice video very well presented. The light rail line looks terrific. Unlike the light rail system down here in San Jose which for the most part is a joke especially when compared to Seattle and San Francisco light rail. i’ve always loved Seattle, the city, Puget Sound, the ferries and even the public transit which is far better than anything here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Be glad and proud of what you have as public transit. I used to work for Boeing and used to go to Seattle quite often. Now I’m retired and I haven’t been there in 30 years. I hope to make it to Seattle at least once more in my lifetime. I want to ride the lovely light rail system for the first time. Also I want to get out one the water via the ferries. i truly miss that. Thanks for giving me some incentive to return.

    Really good honest review of the systems expansion. I believe the Seattle area needs this system and it is a long time coming but I share the same fiscal and management concerns as you do regarding how much time and how much of our tax dollars have already been spent over the past two and a half decades.
    Unfortunately I feel like transit authorities such as sound transit tend to take for granted how much money is available for them to spend. In other countries where the budget is much more tight and there isn’t any alternative funding they are often more careful about both the design and the execution so they can make sure that every part of the budget goes as far as possible. Every dollar that goes towards study after study after study is a dollar not going towards something that is actually tangible and serves an important utility to the community

    The Roosevelt district is a bit more than up and coming. I used to live in a house about five blocks from the station. It would sell now for well over $1 million. It was a cool neighborhood 30 years ago when it was affordable. I think that the Roosevelt station has a moose because of Teddy Roosevelt's running for president on the Bull Moose Party ticket in 1912.

    As more and more people ditch their vehicles the trains will become more and more crowded, yes/no? During the Covid crisis many mass transit systems were unavailable. I am an advocate for making some roads walking districts, but there is a political push to get rid of cars altogether. That I cannot get behind. Btw, I would love to see the Las Vegas Strip a walking district with a raised mass transit down the middle. Great video as usual... thanks.

      Similar situation here in NY. Big push for anti car policies, but it’s mostly the more affluent who can afford to live in rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods in the inner city. Working class people have been getting pushed into the outer boroughs and where mass transit is less accessible yet we work in the city and need ease of transport for our cars. Bit of a sticky situation, do you prioritize the living standards of the affluent and the local environment or do prioritize the lower and working classes who hold up your local economy 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Thanks for the tour but one correction: The first stations opened in 2009, not 3 decades ago. Another line to the east and several expansions north and south are coming online within 3 years (somewhere along 20 new stations in 3 years if my memory is correct). Further down the line in 2030ish is another subway line downtown connecting Ballard and West Seattle as well.
    Yes Seattle got a slow start and is certainly expensive, but in 20 years its system will absolutely be world class with a total of 190 km and 70 stations currently approved and funded.

    Seattle takes pride in their work, the light rail is a work in progress. They started the light link rail from downtown to the Airport before they started going from downtown to Northgate. The train used to turn around at Convention Place Station. Watching free practice? That's cool. Maybe UW will get a Huskies Hockey Team soon, that would be cool too, there's a idea UW, think about it.
    BTW It's Seattle the city hires consultants for homeless organizations to tell the homeless organizations HOW to get money from the city; yes it's stupid and wasteful, however I still love Seattle. If you went to college in Seattle or have ever lived in Seattle you're used to this kind of stuff and you just go "eh whatever" :) Oh and sir? Seattle IS a real city.........

    • @jarheadmstr
      @jarheadmstr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GeminiDiscover yes but construction only began in 2003, it’s not if the second things are voted on you can start construction, you have to secure funds first which takes years, you have to conduct studies which take years, and it only took 6 years for link to open, which for USA is pretty good, you can say the US is slow all you want, but it’s not as if the US is alone in this, Britain has been building the Elizabeth line for many years, and it’s years behind schedule, Berlin delayed opening of their new airport for 10 years, the only countries that really get things done on time are China and maybe some other Asian countries, China for obvios reasons because they don’t have to worry about all the political issues other countries have to worry about, even japan the rail nation faces delays, chuo Shinkansen is years behind schedule, for USA link light rail is actually doing pretty good, and Seattle will have quite a good network with high quality , mostly grade separated rail soon

    • @AshmewStudios
      @AshmewStudios 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GeminiDiscover Voted on doesn’t mean that’s when planning/construction started. The planning, construction, and implementation of the Link Light Rail is actually pretty quick for North America. Construction of the initial segment started in 2003 and completed in 2009. That’s 6 years of construction for a significant portion which is really fast for North America.

    They never have enough money because the federal government decided to finance construction of local transit meaning the federal bureaucracy had to butt its nose into every little thing. I'm sure compliance with Federal rules and regulations increases the cost by at least 50% meaning fewer miles get built meaning builders don't attain as much expertise meaning costs remain high.

    Unfortunately, Seattle is not a safe city to walk and bike. There is a large homeless (drug users) camp just east of North Seattle Collage. The walking bridge could be very unsafe. Not usable at night. And most of those concrete walls in the stations will be covered in graffiti in no time. Notice how that once beautiful mural you walked by was destroyed by graffiti vandals?

      @@devonyagartrell2220 Depends on which part of the Bay. Most of the Bay Area is actually quite safe - Places like Palo Alto, Walnut Creek, Burlingame, etc. San Jose I believe is the safest big city in the country. But there are certain sections of the inner East Bay which are really ghetto. Seattle Metro has large swatchs of gritty/sketchy areas in South King County and Pierce County, but nothing I would call ghetto in the same way that Richmond is. However, Seattle also doesn't have the string of super wealthy communities in the Penninsula and South Bay and Marin County.
