What Frederick Douglass actually said, or more correctly, wrote, was in one of his books, “My Bondage and My Freedom,” where he asked, “Once thoroughly broken down, who is he that can repair the damage?”
Both are valid, both hold the truth of parenting. I wish I had heard Mr. Douglass’s quote when I was raising adults, (you really don’t want to raise children- they don’t function well in an adult world), I would have made plaques and t-shirts because Everyone Needs This Information. I thoroughly believe that if we were able to completely eliminate child abuse in ALL its forms that our world would be a kinder, gentler, and safer place.
As an abused child I knew exactly how I would mother, completely opposite of the way the woman who birthed me did, you see I cannot even call her a mother, she simply wasn’t one. I wasn’t a perfect mom, no one is, but my kids knew they were unconditionally loved beyond all measure and wanted always, every child deserves this.
Frederick Douglass was incredibly wise.

My favorite part is how the kid sounds like he’s saying “bacon was amazing” and his father reacts by interpreting what his son is saying. It’s beautiful when a parent is actually listening intently to their kid, and it’s clear that this father is paying close attention. It’s a beautiful thing to see...

The Dad-DJ, has said his son Kingston's responses in Denny's commercial weren't scripted, neither was his lines. He's only 19 mos old, wld be impossible to get him to dialogue on cue. Camera & Dad were following Kingston's lead! We can see so clearly natural shared love, connection & talent. Re the amazing viral video with the 2 on the couch watching tv and talking: DJ says he talks to his son everyday, responsive conversations are their norm. He videos that often for keepsake & shares w/fam. But that day on the couch wasn't set up, baby climbed up on couch, started watching w/Dad and initiating 'commentary'. Was so amazing that his wife grabbed the camera & shot it.
