She should have won the oscar for her performance in The Whisperers

You are so correct! What a joke! Gibing Katherine Hepburn an Oscar for her worse nominated performance! Evans was the favorite going in, having won the Golden Globe, NY Film Critics award, the Berlin, etc. Had Spencer not died before the Oscars, Hepburn would have never won. One of the worse losses in Oscar history. The only one that comes close was Imelda Staunton losing for Vera Drake.

Hal Ashby is my great uncle!! I read in "Being Hal Ashby" that he decided not to go that night, but changed his mind at the last minute. He also gave that Oscar to Jack Nicholson when he didn't win for The Last Detail.

What a MOMENT!! The capitals are no mistake. Here's Edith Evans at 80ish, one of the century's greatest actresses giving an Oscar to one of the 70's BEST filmmakers (and a late bloomer at 40!)-- Hal Ashby. We can quibble. Maybe Dede did the best editing. But if Hal had not won the Oscar, would he have been given the opportunity to give us (too many to mention) his films? But what I love the most (I am Old-Fashioned) is the way Hal escorts Edith off stage with him rather than leaving her in the dust. What a GENT!!!! And so sorely missed!

Reading "Being Hal Ashby: Life of a Hollywood Rebel" and recognizing what a humanitarian Ashby was. His short acceptance speech is perfect!

Bonobo3D love that book!! Hal Ashby is my great uncle! I never met him, he died when I was little. Reading that book helped me to connect to him.

And no nomination for Dede Allen's brilliant editing of "Bonnie and Clyde". What a shame.

Dame Edith Evans could have recited the script for "Goodfellas" and it would sound classy.

In the year where _The Graduate, In Cold Blood,_ and _Bonnie & Clyde_ changed everything, THOSE were the editing noms!? As much as I love _Guess Who's Coming To Dinner,_ I can't even say it's editing was a standout. Hal Ashby was seriously the only choice in the category.

BlueFox94 wasn't Bonnie and Clyde's editing cutting edge at the time though? I'd assume that movie would win.

Too bad that Dame Edith Evans lost the Best Actress Award that year. I think she won every award for Best Actress that year and then lost the Oscar for possibly one of the worst performances ever. So sad. She was great in "The Whisperers".

Dame Edith Evans won all the other awards but she lost the Oscar for sentimental reasons.

The ceremony was postponed for 2 days following the assassination of Martin Luther King. The only other time it was postponed was following the assassination attempt on Ronald Regan in 1981. but that was just 1 day.

So ... in the 70s, Hollywood still thought editting was splicing pieces of film together?

This awards show was postponed two days due to the horrendous assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. on Aril 4th 19768.
There is an apparent pall over the proceeding because of this.
